Dear Friends:
Dear Friends:
We are so proud to be at the helm of Larkin Street Youth Services as we celebrate “30 Years Giving
Hope.” As we reflect on the past three decades of service to young people, we are humbled by the
hard work and countless successes of the youth whose lives Larkin Street has touched. They inspire us
every day to build an even stronger future.
More than 70,000 homeless and runaway youth have passed through Larkin Street’s doors since we
opened in 1984 as a volunteer-run drop-in center and modest street outreach program. Thirty years
later, we now operate 25 programs from 15 sites citywide, seeing between 3,500 and 4,000 young
people every year across our service continuum. Looking back on the impact Larkin Street has had on
the lives of these young people, we are struck by all the ways in which Larkin Street and the world has
changed. Yet, there is much that remains true today that was true when we first opened our doors.
The fundamental needs of homeless youth are the same now as they were in 1984: these kids need to be
heard; they need to be seen; and they need to belong to something. At the very core, this is what Larkin
Street provides. Youth who felt invisible, ostracized, and terrified come to Larkin Street and find hope.
Larkin Street is awarded Bank of America’s prestigious
Neighborhood Builders Award.
Larkin Street accomplished a tremendous amount of work toward the goals of the strategic plan throughout the year, and the commitment of our staff and leadership cannot be understated. We are now better
poised than at any point during our 30 years to achieve the ambitious goals of our strategic plan.
Even as we have devoted so much time to this important organizational work—implementing new
systems, refining services based on evolving trends—we always keep youth at the heart of our efforts.
We know that the relationships we build with young people truly make the difference.
Over the years, Larkin Street has expanded and fine-tuned our approach to helping youth achieve the
future they deserve. We once considered it our goal to get kids off the streets; today, we reach far
beyond that. It is our goal to put youth on a permanent pathway out of poverty. Getting them off the
streets is the critical first step, but keeping them off the streets and pointed toward a full, productive,
self-sustaining life requires much more than shelter and a warm meal. We believe in the potential of
every young person who walks through our doors to achieve the following:
When asked how Larkin Street had helped him, one young person simply said, “Larkin Street caught
me.” When families and communities let these young people fall through the cracks, we are the safety
net that catches them, and then we serve as the nurturing, encouraging, and firm family they need to
get back on their feet and eventually thrive.
••
••
Sustainable, living-wage employment
At least two years of post-secondary school
Safe, stable housing
Physical and emotional wellbeing
These outcomes are Larkin Street’s stake in the ground. Our five-year strategic plan—passed
unanimously by the Board of Directors in the fall of 2012—boldly states these outcomes, raising
the bar for the youth we serve, the organization, and the field as a whole. As we close out the
first year of our ambitious strategic plan to drive the outcomes of youth in our care higher
‘
•
•
•
••
Our key successes over the past year include:
Refining and codifying our clinical approach to align with
Best Practices in the field
Creating a bold new approach to education and employment
that accounts for San Francisco’s growing skills-to-jobs gap
Launching a best-in-class performance management system to track youth outcomes and further
codify our model
Increasing our role in local, state, and national policy work
Implementing an agency-wide process for Continuous Quality Improvement
Just as we did 30 years ago, Larkin Street starts small. We meet youth where they are, providing a pair of
clean socks, a warm meal, and a safe place to rest. Then we help young people to think big. Once they
feel safe, they develop a sense of hope; once they feel hopeful, they start thinking about their future.

Just as we are inspired by the hard work of the young people we serve, we are humbled by the many
contributions of our supporters—the individuals, corporations, foundations, and civic organizations
who donate time, talent, and resources because of our shared belief in the potential of young people,
regardless of the hand they have been dealt. For 30 years, our community of supporters has made our
work possible. Thank you.

Community Involvement
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
As a community-based nonprofit
organization, Larkin Street Youth
Services depends upon community
support in order to thrive. We could
not function without the help of
volunteers working throughout our
programs every day. Whether they
are cooking meals, tutoring, sorting
donations or helping us to beautify a space for
our youth, volunteers are an integral part of
everything going on at Larkin Street. The energy,
creativity, time, and passion they contribute
enhances Larkin Street’s ability to provide highquality comprehensive services for our youth,
and we are truly grateful for this support.

Benefiting Larkin Street Youth Services
November 16, 2013
W San Francisco
Celebrating it’s 8 th year, The San Francisco Social, a group of young professionals,
raised over $65,000 for Larkin Street Youth Services. With nearly 500 attendees,
the evening began with dinner at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel then moved to the gala
at the W San Francisco for dancing, live entertainment and a silent auction to benefit
Larkin Street. This year the event included a pop-up art gallery of art work from
the Larkin Street Youth
Services Art Program.
We thank the members
and guests of The
San Francisco Social
for honoring Larkin
Street Youth Services
as their beneficiary for
the past two years.

Community Involvement
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
As a community-based nonprofit
organization, Larkin Street Youth
Services depends upon community
support in order to thrive. We could
not function without the help of
volunteers working throughout our
programs every day. Whether they
are cooking meals, tutoring, sorting
donations or helping us to beautify a space for
our youth, volunteers are an integral part of
everything going on at Larkin Street. The energy,
creativity, time, and passion they contribute
enhances Larkin Street’s ability to provide highquality comprehensive services for our youth,
and we are truly grateful for this support.

Knowledge Leadership
Knowledge Leadership
Larkin Street extends impact beyond the youth we serve in programs through our commitment to knowledge sharing and thought dissemination. The goals are to contribute to the knowledge base
of best practices and to educate policymakers in order to impact the development of sound public policy related to homeless youth. This is achieved through various activities including publications,
presentations, advocacy e-letters, and technical assistance activities.
CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS
Last year Larkin Street participated in 10 professional conference presentations across the United States on topics such as models of care for homeless youth, youth leadership, trafficking,
and workforce development.
Selected Conferences
Addressing HIV among Homeless Youth in the United States presented at International AIDS Conference
Youth Count! Ending Youth Homelessness in Communities in California and the Nation presented at Housing California
Harm Reduction – Workforce Development with Homeless Youth presented at National Association of Workforce Development Professionals Annual Conference

PUBLICATIONS
[4]
Youth Homelessness in San Francisco: 2012 Report on Incidence and Needs, is an annual publication that provides an overview of the incidence of youth homelessness
in San Francisco, the needs of the population, and Larkin Street’s response.
Developing a Greater Understanding of the Prevalence and Characteristics of Homeless Youth outlines strategies that can be employed to develop a greater understanding
of the size and characteristics of the homeless youth population - expanded data collection by systems of care, enhanced Point-in-Time counts, and greater integration of data systems.
POLICY AND ADVOCACY
Larkin Street representatives participate in various workgroups, committees, and tasks forces to advocate on behalf of homeless youth. In addition representatives engage in other activities
throughout the year, selected examples from the last year:
Served as State Captain for National Alliance to End Homelessness Capitol Hill Lobby Day in Washington, DC. Hill Day provides advocates with an opportunity to meet with their
representatives to provide information and garner support for national legislation that has community level impacts. Meetings focused on funding for HUD’s homelessness assistance
programs, impact of sequestration, and support of youth homelessness programs through appropriations for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.
Hosted a group of state legislators at a visit to Lark Inn prior to the Assembly Select Committee on Homelessness Hearing - Housing, Social, Legal and Health Care Barriers
for Homeless Youth, LGBT Youth and Transitioning Foster Youth in San Francisco. Presented at the hearing on the LGBTQ homeless youth population, providing a description of
service needs and policy recommendations.

Sustainable, living-wage employment
At least two years of post-secondary school
Safe, stable housing
Physical and emotional wellbeing
These outcomes are Larkin Street’s stake in the ground. Our five-year strategic plan—passed
unanimously by the Board of Directors in the fall of 2012—boldly states these outcomes, raising
the bar for the youth we serve, the organization, and the field as a whole. As we close out the
first year of our ambitious strategic plan to drive the outcomes of youth in our care higher

Thank you.
