JDL staff as we bring you a fun-filled
event for the entire family!

bouncy castle, a live DJ, a fire truck,
a police car, a snowplow, a special
visit from Biscuit and Gravy, plus
plenty of games, activities, and

some of our live animal
ambassadors and some
amazing Bio-facts; such
as furs, skulls or other

See, hear and touch a real Didgeridoo and
boomerang! In the slide show, you will see
Kangaroos hopping, Kookaburras laughing and a

The first craft is watercolors,
followed by plant holders and

Learn all about flying in this aerodynamic workshop,
presented by Ann Arbor’s Hands On Museum.
Participants will make a variety of airborne toys and

Celebrations
A great big thank you to all the students and teachers for
their interest and support of the Young Poets Contest. This
was a record breaking year with 978 poetry submissions (the
most we’ve ever had)! Students from twenty-six Jackson
County schools representing eleven school districts as well as
charter and parochial schools, participated in the contest. In
addition, 40 homeschooled students submitted poetry.
The judges were extremely impressed with the efforts
displayed in the poems submitted. The winning student
authors read their poems at the Awards Ceremony held on
Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in the Auditorium at the Middle School
at Parkside. Nationally known author/poet Kalli Dakos also
participated in the program which featured the presentation
of the students’ poetry, prizes, certificates and ribbons. In
addition to the usual prizes, student award winners received
a signed copy of one of Ms. Dakos’ books.

We Love the Library!
Despite the chilly, wintery, January start of 2014, it’s
been sizzlin’ at Summit. Our first warm and
fuzzy came by way of a local family of
library users. Dad reads large print
and westerns, Joy reads fiction and
mysteries and Roy is Summit’s
big music lover. Roy’s favorites
are the 1960’s, 1970’s and some
of the 1980’s Rock & Rollers. He
regularly places CD’s on hold in
both the JDL and MeL systems.
When his CD’s arrive, he walks up
to the branch to pick them up – almost
immediately and is excited to check them out;
every time!
he arrives, he talks to us about his selections and
often shares interesting music trivia with us.
Well, onto the warm and fuzzy –
Lori, Roy’s sister recently stopped
by to pick up her books that were
on hold and was chatting with
a staff member. She said, “You
know Marsha, Roy really loves
visiting your branch. He told me
that when he comes to Summit, he
feels just like Norm in the TV series
Cheers. ‘Cause everybody knows his
name.” When Roy came by to get his photo
taken he said, “Every day feels like Christmas when
I pick up CD’s from Summit.”
Not even the record-breaking, subzero temperatures
of January 2014 could keep Roy from walking to the
Summit Branch to pick up his precious music! When

Praise to Nancy and Bill Buckland and their pal, Clint, the Welsh Corgi.
Nancy was a long time employee of JDL until her retirement. When
I became manager of the Spring Arbor Branch in early 2009, Nancy
approached me to see if Clint could come to our branch as a means to
reach children and improve their reading and social skills. I was thrilled
at this opportunity.
I moved our story time to Monday mornings, refocused it to “Tiny Tots”,
and Bill has brought Nancy and Clint to the Spring Arbor Branch for five
years. Because of Clint, we have children who have lost their fear of
dogs, have “grown up” with Clint and learned to share stories with him.
Our relationship has been rewarding and wonderful. Clint knows as
soon as Nancy puts on her red shirt that he’s going to the library.
Thanks to the Bucklands for their generosity. We eagerly look forward
to Mondays!

There are people who prefer a more
pure food source and, to the extent
they are able, want to provide that
to themselves and their families.
To that end some people want to
raise their own animals even though they may live in a
residential area. Are they protected under the “Right
to Farm” law? Some municipalities have said “No”.
Are they right to do that?
The Jackson NAACP, Jackson
Area Civil Rights Awareness
Association,
and
JDL
are
partnering
to
show
the
documentary,
Freedom
Riders. In 1961 a courageous integrated band of
college students boarded Greyhound buses to the Deep
South, intent on challenging segregation. Jackson
residents Arme Ree Thompson and Rev. Van Covington
were involved in the march and other demonstrations.
They will be present to talk about their experiences.
Discussion following the viewing will be facilitated by
Katena Cain, management consultant at Nonprofit
Network.
Panelists include: Dan Gough, Building Official, Zoning
Administrator, and Ordinance Officer for Blackman
Township; Robert Smith, Ordinance Enforcement
Officer for Summit Township; Wendy Lockwood Banka
PhD, MPP. She is the President of the Michigan Small
Farms Council.
