Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Covers HeForShe
June 1, New York, USA & Reykjavik, Iceland—In a bold op-ed
piece Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi
Sveinsson discussed the success of the HeForShe campaign in his
country. 1 in 20 men in Iceland has committed to HeForShe—the
highest concentration of HeForShes in the world! Mr. Sveinsson
notes that if this density were translated to the UK, nearly 1.5M
British men would be HeForShes. In his riveting opinion piece,
the minister explores the question of why Icelandic men care so
much about gender equality. Iceland has a number of first-of-itskind policies, including generous paternity leave laws and a full
century of women’s suffrage. Today, Iceland continues to rank
first in the World Economic Forum gender parity index, and 40%
of parliamentarians are women. Despite this, the minister says,
“Let’s be clear. We are not “there” yet. Not in Iceland or
anywhere else in the world. We continue to see stereotypical
roles of men and women in all walks of life. However, our record
on gender equality is part of who we are and how we measure
success…Gender inequality cannot be the legacy we leave
behind.” We couldn’t agree more. Thanks to Iceland for your
leadership! Read the full op-ed here: http://bit.ly/1I1VyZS
