Jeff Reed did a great job on the 51-yard field goal and Chris Gardocki continually put us in good field position.” How did the delay affect tonight’s game? “The weather in the first half was not conducive to do anything. It was difficult to hold the ball and both teams couldn’t throw for a while. It was hard to run playing on the mud, but that’s football. I love games like that. To me, it’s what it is all about. You’re dealing with the surface, you’re dealing with the elements, but you still have to play the game within the game.” What are your feelings on Ben Roethlisberger’s performance? “The quarterback played well. He never lost his composure and he played like I thought he would play. He had a great throw to Plax (Plaxico Burress) in the first drive. He just enjoys playing. This is a great learning experience. He went up against a great defense with two solid corners. After the first play when he threw the interception, he bounced back. After that, he made good decisions and gave guys a chance to make some plays.” Are you concerned about the running game? “It’s very important. We really didn’t get it going until the end. I give Miami credit. They are a very good defense, but we still need to run the football more efficiently early in the game. The circumstances were difficult. We used all three backs. Vernon Haynes looked like the best mud-running back. You’ve got to give them a lot of credit and for the receivers for staying with me. You score there at the end and it gives you some confidence and it gives your defense that’s already playing great today some more confidence. I told Hines that he was lucky because I was about two seconds from throwing it away. You have to put it near the playmakers and they’re going to make plays. I threw the ball in the corner where Hines could make the play and he’ll make it every time.” (How were you affected by the delay?) “It’s one of those things that’s more mental than anything. You have to come and be mentally prepared. Once again it’s a credit to the rest of the guys. We lost power last night right in the middle of films, we all had flashlights and Coach Cowher was trying to come get us to play flashlight tag in the lobby but I don’t think that anyone went. It’s just one of those things where you need to be mentally ready all of the time.” (How were you with taking control of the huddle?) “I don’t think that there were any problems but you would have to ask the other guys. Those are the little things that we will talk about next week when we have those little conversations. They’ll come to me with suggestions such as speak up or other little things that will make a difference.” (About the Dolphins defense) “They are a great defense, they have got a great front seven, a great secondary and they came at us. I think the conditions made them blitz a lot knowing that you couldn’t throw the ball down field very well. They blitzed a lot but I’ve got to give a lot of credit to our offensive line. I figured he was a little shy there for a little bit, but we have a great group of guys in the huddle. He probably should’ve just thrown it out of bounds, they had pretty good coverage. He tried to make something, and we ended up with an interception. For his first game, Miami had a hellified defense, and the bad weather, he’s gotta look into all of those factors. I don’t know if it was the conditions early or what, but I would sure as heck lump him right in with everybody else. We’ve got to be a lot better there if we’re going to have any chance to win and score points. (on the possibility of changing quarterbacks during the game) Not the second half. I really felt like we were going to win the thing at the end there. The way our defense was playing, I just believed the whole second half. I mean, you’ve got to be kidding me – fourth down and two inches. I was going to punt the ball. The officials came over and I asked him. I called a time out, and I said, tell me exactly. And he said it was two inches. We can’t make two inches on a quarterback sneak? You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s embarrassing. You fall down, you should make two inches. (on possibly revisiting the “quarterback situation”) I have to revisit everything and see if there is any way – we’ve got to try to do something to get better. We’ve got to look at every position, special teams, offense, everything. [Running back] Lamar [Gordon] was sick before the game, he had a 102 temperature, and he gets in there and he busts up his shoulder. [Running back] Leonard Henry took the whole dose, and [full back] Doug Easlick was our back-up tailback. So, we are on our fifth tailback right now. (on the problem with throwing the ball downfield) Tonight, a lot of times, the conditions had a lot to do with it, and a lot of times it’s protection. We called probably four to five balls, we were running the lateral pushes. We got the one pass interference call, missed one, hit [tight end] Randy [McMichael] on one, all those passes at the tight end. A couple of times we didn’t get them off; they were pushing. (on the possible need to find another running back) It all depends on how bad Lamar [Gordon] is. Travis [Minor] is not ready to play, and Sammy [Morris] was inactive today, he’s not ready to play. We’ve got to continue to just try to be balanced with the run and the pass, and right now, we’re not doing either very well.
