Coach Bill Cowher Post Game Quotes
Coach Cowher: “We came out tonight, played good defense and got enough
points. Jeff Reed did a great job on the 51-yard field goal and Chris Gardocki
continually put us in good field position.”
How did the delay affect tonight’s game?
“The weather in the first half was not conducive to do anything. It was difficult to
hold the ball and both teams couldn’t throw for a while. It was hard to run playing
on the mud, but that’s football. I love games like that. To me, it’s what it is all
about. You’re dealing with the surface, you’re dealing with the elements, but you
still have to play the game within the game.”
What are your feelings on Ben Roethlisberger’s performance?
“The quarterback played well. He never lost his composure and he played like I
thought he would play. He had a great throw to Plax (Plaxico Burress) in the first
drive. He just enjoys playing. This is a great learning experience. He went up
against a great defense with two solid corners. After the first play when he threw
the interception, he bounced back. After that, he made good decisions and gave
guys a chance to make some plays.”
Are you concerned about the running game?
“It’s very important. We really didn’t get it going until the end. I give Miami credit.
They are a very good defense, but we still need to run the football more
efficiently early in the game. The circumstances were difficult. We used all three
backs. Vernon Haynes looked like the best mud-running back. That’s why we
kept him in there.”

Ben Roethlisberger Post Game Quotes
(How was it out there?) “It was muddy, and it was wet, but it was a lot of fun.
Talk about getting thrown into the fire. To come out playing in a hurricane and
against that type of defense was a challenge for us but we came out and did
some good things. We did some bad things that we need to correct but we came
out on top so we can now make those adjustments for next weekend.”
(About the touchdown drive at the end of the game) “That’s a big play by
Hines twice I think and for Plaxico to stay with me on the scramble. You also
can’t say enough about offensive lineman who don’t hold when you scramble.
That’s one of the toughest thing for an offensive lineman to do is to hold a block,
and not to hold or go down field when the quarterback scrambles. You’ve got to
give them a lot of credit and for the receivers for staying with me. You score
there at the end and it gives you some confidence and it gives your defense
that’s already playing great today some more confidence. I told Hines that he
was lucky because I was about two seconds from throwing it away. You have to
put it near the playmakers and they’re going to make plays. I threw the ball in the
corner where Hines could make the play and he’ll make it every time.”
(How were you affected by the delay?) “It’s one of those things that’s more
mental than anything. You have to come and be mentally prepared. Once again
it’s a credit to the rest of the guys. We lost power last night right in the middle of
films, we all had flashlights and Coach Cowher was trying to come get us to play
flashlight tag in the lobby but I don’t think that anyone went. It’s just one of those
things where you need to be mentally ready all of the time.”
(How were you with taking control of the huddle?) “I don’t think that there
were any problems but you would have to ask the other guys. Those are the little
things that we will talk about next week when we have those little conversations.
They’ll come to me with suggestions such as speak up or other little things that
will make a difference.”
(About the Dolphins defense) “They are a great defense, they have got a great
front seven, a great secondary and they came at us. I think the conditions made
them blitz a lot knowing that you couldn’t throw the ball down field very well. They
blitzed a lot but I’ve got to give a lot of credit to our offensive line. They did a
great job of opening up holes and pass protecting.”

Steelers Defense Post Game Quotes
Chris Hope
(On causing the fumble on the first play) We tried to create great field position
for our offense as well as create turnovers. I had the opportunity to do that today.
(On Ben Roethlisbergers first game being an issue) Our goal is to go out
every game and create turnovers but we made a strong effort being Ben’s first
game.
(On trying to keep pace with Miami’s defense) Miami has a great defense and
it showed tonight. They rose to the occasion every time and it kept them in the
game. We did our part of the bargain, the offense came up with some big plays
during the game and we prevailed.
Troy Polamalu
(On playing in the weather conditions tonight) It was I great experience.
(On if he had ever experienced anything like that before) Yeah, I grew up in
Oregon, so I’m used to it.
(On the interception he had in the game) Well, I just seemed to be in a lucky
spot and we had the perfect call for the play and the ball came right to me.

Steelers Offense Post Game Quotes
Steeler WR Hines Ward #86
(Q) On Touchdown Reception…
(A) “I was the last read on that, Zach Thomas played it good, and he (QB) ended up
scrambling back and throwing it to the pylon, and that’s where he’s supposed to throw
the ball at, the front part of the pylon, and he threw it low and away and I was able to
make the catch”
(Q) On QB keeping his composure…
(A) “It was rough for a little bit, but he held his own. He came out and did a tremendous
job. I think the first play he was just trying to make a play, make something into nothing,
and he just ended up throwing the ball away, and consequently we ended up getting an
interception in the series. After that, he settled down and started going to his reads. He
played his heart out.”
(Q) On getting 100 yards in the rain conditions…
(A) “That was probably the worst weather I have ever played in, or second to the Jets
game last year in the snow. A game like that you really don’t want to go out and have
any turnovers. We really tried to control the ball. I was just trying to convert 3rd downs.
So we can get more opportunities, and I ended up converting some key 3rd downs.”
(Q) On QB taking control of huddle as rookie…
(A) “Yeah, for a rookie. I figured he was a little shy there for a little bit, but we have a
great group of guys in the huddle. If he’s not saying something to someone, someone
else will take control and step up.”
(Q) On QB keeping plays alive and moving around in the backfield…
(A) “He tried to take a bad play and make it into something, the first play. He probably
should’ve just thrown it out of bounds, they had pretty good coverage. He tried to make
something, and we ended up with an interception. For his first game, Miami had a
hellified defense, and the bad weather, he’s gotta look into all of those factors. He did a
tremendous job out there.”
Steeler RB Duce Staley #22
(Q) On importance of running the ball in weather…
(A) “You know anything about the Pittsburgh Steelers, you know we’re going to run the
ball. We’re going to line up and we’re going to point in the direction we’re going. I
thought because of the conditions, I thought it was imperative that we continued to run
the ball. Some negative plays there, but they’re a good defense. We stuck with our
gameplan of running the ball, and it paid off.”
(Q) Importance of Run-game to take pressure off of QB…
(A) “Not a question, I thought he responded well. He didn’t show any rookie jitters. He
made plays, and we have to ride him until Tommy comes back.”
(Q) On getting 100 yards…
(A) “Anytime you go over the century mark, it’s nice. You gotta take advantage of it. All
the credit goes to my lines, those guys did a great job. Coaches did a great job. We
came down here in hostile environment, and was able to take over.”
(Q) On play they busted…
(A) “The play we busted is the play we saw on film. We had been seeing that play all
week.”

Dolphins Head Coach Dave Wannstedt Post Game Quotes
OPENING COMMENTS: There are a lot of things that happened out there tonight that hurts us
from winning the football game. The field position a couple of times, the ball not hitting the
ground, taking the wrong bounce, however you want to look at it. Field position hurt us on
several occasions. Three or four times on offense we were forced to come off inside their ten
yard line, backed up, and [then there were] a couple of turnovers early. We’re continuing to work
at that. We know we have to get a lot better. Four to one, whatever it was there, a
turnover…that’s a tough thing to overcome. We’ve got to score some points. Let’s get right down
to the bottom line. As a team, we have to find a way to score more points than what we’ve had
tonight and in the last three weeks. We’ve got to find a way to make more plays.
(on the Dolphins’ play against the blitz) I don’t know how much more we can work on it. We
will, but that wasn’t a surprise. We knew that. [Pittsburgh defensive coordinator] Dick Lebeau
was the same guy that was calling the defense last year for Buffalo. There wasn’t anything that
surprised us. Physically we got beat some at the end. We were trying to match protection as
much as we could. One on one guys just didn’t handle it. We didn’t block them.
(on the play of A.J. Feely) We can’t turn the ball over. I don’t know if it was the conditions early
or what, but I would sure as heck lump him right in with everybody else. We’ve got to be a lot
better there if we’re going to have any chance to win and score points.
(on the possibility of changing quarterbacks during the game) Not the second half. I really
felt like we were going to win the thing at the end there. The way our defense was playing, I just
believed the whole second half. I mean, you’ve got to be kidding me – fourth down and two
inches. I was going to punt the ball. The officials came over and I asked him. I called a time out,
and I said, tell me exactly. And he said it was two inches. We can’t make two inches on a
quarterback sneak? You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s embarrassing. You fall down, you should
make two inches.
(on possibly revisiting the “quarterback situation”) I have to revisit everything and see if
there is any way – we’ve got to try to do something to get better. We’ve got to look at every
position, special teams, offense, everything. [Running back] Lamar [Gordon] was sick before the
game, he had a 102 temperature, and he gets in there and he busts up his shoulder. [Running
back] Leonard Henry took the whole dose, and [full back] Doug Easlick was our back-up tailback.
So, we are on our fifth tailback right now.
(on the problem with throwing the ball downfield) Tonight, a lot of times, the conditions had a
lot to do with it, and a lot of times it’s protection. We called probably four to five balls, we were
running the lateral pushes. We got the one pass interference call, missed one, hit [tight end]
Randy [McMichael] on one, all those passes at the tight end. A couple of times we didn’t get
them off; they were pushing.
(on the possible need to find another running back) It all depends on how bad Lamar
[Gordon] is. Travis [Minor] is not ready to play, and Sammy [Morris] was inactive today, he’s not
ready to play. Rob [Konrad]…I hope he’s close, I think he’s close, but he wasn’t ready for this
week. We have to make plays. We’re not making enough plays. And two penalties early on
because the guy can’t hear the snap count? I mean, come on. What is that? That’s
unacceptable.
(on turning the offense around) That is going to be the focus. We’ll meet tomorrow. We’ve
got three division games in a row. If we’re going to get this thing turned, make anything of the
season, it’s got to start this Sunday, with the division. I’d like to tell you that we’re going to line up
and run it 100 times a game. That’s what I’d really like to tell you, but we can’t do that. We’ve got
to continue to just try to be balanced with the run and the pass, and right now, we’re not doing
either very well.

Dolphins Head Coach Dave Wannstedt Post Game Quotes
(on the recent spate of injuries, inclement weather, scheduling changes) It’s difficult, more
difficult than any year since I’ve been coaching, but that’s not an excuse. We’ve got to deal with
it. We’ve got to deal. The game was out there to be had. 6-3 and we’ve got the ball, 3-3,
whatever it was…we’ve got first and ten on the 22 yard line going in. Don’t kick a field goal;
we’ve got to put it in the end zone and score. We’ve got to score touchdowns. You can’t win in
this league scoring seven points a game or whatever it is that we’re averaging.

A.J. Feely Post Game Quotes
On the game…
“The first half was bad because of the conditions. You can’t throw in that
weather. You have to grind it out. We came out in the second half and were a
little better, but we couldn’t do much with it.”
On the offense…
“We have to find a way, somehow, and get things going. I feel bad of the
defensive guys because it’s all on the offense right now.”
On improving…
“To get better, it starts in practice so everyone’s on the same page and you can
translate it into the game.”
On getting hit…
“It’s part of being the quarterback. You throw it, get hit, get up and throw it again.
You take your shots, that’s the name of the game.”
On next week’s game…
“We have to be confident. You learn from every game and take it with you. Now
it’s conference (play) time.”
On preparation…
“We got to get back mentally and somehow find a way to make a play. We got to
get better.”

Dolphins Offense Post Game Quotes
A.J. Feeley
(On if he was pressing himself) – “Yeah, I wish I could get that one ball back
when I crossed the line of scrimmage. That was me trying to make a play.”
(What can you guys do to get better) – “We have got to find a way to come
together offensively. I feel bad for the defensive guys right now because it all falls
on us. It all starts with practice, we have to get on the same page this week.
From there it carries over to the game.”
(On the pounding he took) – “As a quarterback you get back up and throw
again. You know that getting into this game. You have got to keep fighting. Your
going to take your shots.”

Dolphins Offense Post Game Quotes
John St Clair
(On how the team keeps it’s confidence up) – “We have got to stick together. It’s
hard when you adversity but you’ve got to stick together. The guys on this team
are close knit guys so it shouldn’t be a problem we’ve just got to stick together.”
Randy McMichael
(On being 0-3) – “I’m really at a loss for words right now, which is very hard for
me. I don’t know what to say. We are in a deep hole and we have got to find a
way to get out.”
(On any positives from the game) – “No…I mean we lost. We didn’t make
enough plays, are playmakers didn’t get the chance to make enough plays. We
take are hat off to Pittsburgh, they came down here and beat us.”
(On if having new players affected the team’s performance) – “That has
nothing to do with it. I’m tired of that as an excuse for why we can’t move the
ball.”
Leonard Henry
(On getting a chance to play) – “I just want to thank God for allowing me to get
this opportunity to play. It shows the type of running backs we have, one guy
goes down and the other guy steps in.”
(On his performance tonight) – “I feel like I played good. I was just thankful to
get out there.”
(On the conditions) – “No excuses, we had the opportunity but we didn’t make
enough plays. The weather didn’t really affect anything (in the running game).”

Dolphins Defense Post Game Quotes
CB Sam Madison
(On the loss to the Steelers) - “It’s pretty tough. But one thing I can say is guys
went out there and hung tough. Pittsburgh had a pretty good game plan against
us and they came out victorious. Guys went out and they gave a lot more effort.
We just have to find a way to put it all together. The effort was there. I can’t
complain about the way we went out and laid it on the line. With the type of
weather we have, things happen. We’re 0-3 and we have three division games
ahead and we can’t lay down right now.”
(On how frustrating it is to be 0-3) – “It’s very frustrating. The way we’ve been
losing. The way things just haven’t been going our way. We have a long way to
go and you can’t let it get to you because it will just barrow down hill and it will be
really bad around here. I think we have a lot of young guys that we can work
with. We need to try and get them better over the next few weeks. The older
guys are really going to have to put the pedal to the medal till the younger guys
keep up with us. Until then we just have to go out and continue to work. I can’t
complain with the way the guys have been working in practice and then coming
out on the field and working every week.”
LB Morlon Greenwood
(On how emotional of a loss it was to Pittsburgh) – “It was a tough loss for
us. As a football team we want to go out there and win. At the same time we are
0-3 right now heading into a division game this week and we just have to stick
together. We have to regroup and come back stronger next week because we
can’t let this get to us because I think we are going to get this thing together.”
(On whether the team is regressing after three games) – “I think we are
improving. I think tonight we had some times when we ran the ball. I don’t think
we had too many penalties. I think all we have to do is keep on sticking together
as a football team, make the changes where they need to be made and keep on
working hard and keep on getting better in the areas we need to improve in.”
