No matter the quality or cost of the coolant you select, it will
eventually fail in some respect. Failures can be chemical,
biological, and even mechanical. They affect your
machines, tools, parts, and your workers. Sump
life can be generously extended by following
preventative maintenance protocols.
START FRESH & MONITOR
Measuring the pH of your coolant will indicate the
amount of acid present in the fluid. These acids are caused
primarily by bacterial contamination due to incorrect concentration,
excessive tramp oil, poor circulation, or chemical breakdown by metals
accumulation. Monitor sump pH on a daily basis to keep the coolant within
its proper pH range and thus chemically stable. If it falls below the proper pH
range for your fluid, then the above preventative maintenance protocols need to
be addressed.
To verify that you are starting with a properly cleaned sump before it is recharged
with fresh fluid, measure the pH of its rinse bath. The target pH for any rinse bath
is 7 (neutral and that of water). If the pH is below 7 then there is still contamination
present, and you should repeat the cleaning process. Recharging fluid to an
improperly cleaned sump only exposes the fresh fluid to the same conditions that
were present when it failed in the first place.

Zebra offers pH Test Strips which have the accuracy range for that of coolant and
which are simple, and the most convenient, to use.
When mixing your coolant, verify its concentration with the use of a refractometer,
such as our Basic or Specialist Refractometer. The reference scales on mixing
equipment are graduated, not calibrated, and proportions may be affected by factors
such as the concentrate’s viscosity and your incoming water pressure.
Monitor individual sump concentrations to keep them where they need to be for
the machining process. Low concentrations cause dull or broken tools, encourage
rust, and create conditions for bacterial growth. High concentrations are a waste of raw
material and can lead to negative health reactions. Daily monitoring is recommended so
you can correct for increased concentrations due to water evaporation.
Measure the hardness of your water supply for it may have an overabundance of
calcium or magnesium, causing insufficient coolant emulsions. This situation renders
the fluid useless for the machining process because the concentrate separates from the
water portion. Low hardness levels can cause foaming problems, which inhibit the tramp
oil removal process and possible sump overflow.

Individual sumps should also be monitored, on a weekly basis, for their hardness levels,
as the overall mineral count may increase due to water evaporation and accumulation
of the materials machined.

Proper proportions are necessary when
mixing your coolant so you use the correct
amount for the machining process yet not
waste raw material. Proper emulsions are
also needed so the mixture does not separate
easily. The process of mixing your coolant is
best achieved using one of our coolant mixers
– either the Economy or Machinist Mixer.
KEEP SUMP CLEAN
When you require the mixture to be delivered
directly to your sump or central tank (and
not lugged around in buckets) than it’s
time to step up to our Proportioning
Pump. It not only mixes the fluid much
more accurately, but also pumps the
mixture a distance away from the
mixing site.
Skim tramp oil daily from the surface of your coolant.
These oils are a food source for bacteria, which then thrive
and cause coolant rancidity and dermatitus. Tramp oil, if left
in the fluid, will also eventually emulsify into the coolant and
promote shop mist.
The metals that you machine are harmful to your coolant
and regular particle filtration is necessary. When left
to interact with your fluid, they degrade the fluid on
a chemcial level due to the ionic activity taking place
between the coolant and the metal (iron, aluminum, and
magnesium are most harmful). These chemical reactions
weaken coolant, affecting its overall performance. Sumps
that accumulate piles of chips also provide a great
environment for bacteria to nest and reproduce.

To skim tramp oils you can choose one of our mechanical units
– Smart Disk Skimmer, Belt Skimmer, or Sidewinder Tube
Skimmer. You may also use one of our coalescers, such as the
Muscle for each sump, or a Snapdragon – portable coalescing units
for multiple sump service.
Due to the absence of oxygen, machine sumps that sit idle go
rancid much faster than those that run continuously. Idle
sump life is a couple of days to weeks, whereas active
sumps last for several months and even a year or more.
When the machine pump is not moving coolant, utilize
an aerator such as our Oxygenator or a circulation
pump to keep oxygen in the fluid for prevention of
bacterial contamination and rancidity. Odor control
tablets are effective in the interim, and in conjunction
with aeration, lessen foul odors.

Venturi pumps are commonly used for coolant mixers. The moving water across
the coolant orifice creates a low pressure zone drawing coolant into the water
stream. The combination of the two laminar flows creates a strong turbulent zone
in which the two fluids are thoroughly mixed. Since there are no moving parts,
the pump has a very high degree of reliability. The needle valve allows for a high
degree of precision for setting the proportion of coolant mixed in with the water.

How It Works
Your coolant is drawn in through the bottom port (A) and
metered by the adjustable screw (B) for a constant amount
of water being drawn in through the fitting (C) on the other
side. The entire arm (D) moves back and forth so that your
coolant is being injected into the water stream. The mixing
occurs at the exit fitting (E), and proceeds to your coolant
sump. You can watch what is being drawn in the clear
coolant block, and you know the unit is working perfectly by
seeing the draw arm moving.

1. Dirty coolant is brought in by the intake attachment and travels through
this fitting to the coalescing cartridge (or Fine Stopper on F15DF models).
2. The Fine Stopper (F15DF model) gathers any chips that are brought in
with the dirty coolant through the intake attachment. These chips are
mainly the ones that float with the tramp oil layer.
3. The coalescing media increase the internal surface area of the barrel
fivefold to coalesce the oil droplets.
4. The coolant then travels through the coalescing cartridge, whereby the
tiny oil droplets cling to the coalescing media. Once large enough, they
then rise out of the coolant, traveling above the perforated plate atop of
the coalescing cartridge for manual discharge.
5. The Internal Oil Discharge Skimmer (IODS) gathers the oils for virtually
coolant-free discharge.
6. Clean coolant is returned from the bottom of the Muscle through this
pipe.
7. The drum dolly provides for easy maneuverability of the coolant-filled
Muscle during machine maintenance
