The Canadian team is an
absolute powerhouse down the
middle of the ice with Jonathan
Toews, John Tavares, Patrice
Bergeron, Ryan Getzlaf and
Cole Harbour’s own Sidney
Crosby who has been named
captain. Nashville’s Shea Weber
and Chicago’s Jonathan Toews
have been named alternate
captains. This will be the first
time Crosby has ever been
captain for an international
team.
Hayley
Wickenheiser
by Adeline Francis
Hayley Wickenheiser is an ice
hockey player from Canada. She
plays full-time professional
hockey as a goalie and in other
positions.
This year Wickenheiser was
nominated to play at the
Olympics 2014 in Sochi (from
February 7 to February 23).
She was Canada’s flag bearer.
Canada believes that along with
her Canadian teammates she
could win us our fourth straight
gold medal in Sochi. There’s a
lot of pressure for all the players
whether you're a male or a
female hockey player and it’s the
same pressure that comes with
playing hockey.

The Quest
For Gold
By Sam Cormier
The men’s Olympic Hockey
team representing Canada this
year is very strong but so is the
competition. As always the
announcement came with lots
of surprises. The headlines were
that Martin St. Louis did not
make the team after literally
carrying the Tampa Bay
Lightning when Steven Stamkos
went down with a terrible leg
injury. Another surprise is that
Steven Stamkos made the team
although he might not be able
to play because of his broken
leg. Another person that some
people think should have made
the team is Claude Giroux of
the Philadelphia Flyers
Cole Harbour’s Sydney Crosby team captain
Manager of the team, Steve
Yzerman said he isn’t feeling
extremely confident because
every year the competition gets
stronger but their goal is still to
win gold and I think they can.
The goaltending situation for
Canada is sort of clear but not
really. Almost everyone knows
that Mike Smith will be the third
string goalie and will not play
unless someone gets hurt, but
for the starting job there are
mixed reviews. Some people
(Yannick) think Luongo should
start but other people (Jacob
and I) think Price should start.
Canada will probably start those
two once each and the better
goalie will play the third and
most likely the rest of the
games.
The defense experienced a lot of
drama on announcement day,
wondering if habs defensemen
P.K Subban would make the
team (he did). Mike Babcock the
head coach wanted four left
defensemen and four right
defensemen and he got his wish
with four of each. The defensive
pairings will probably be Jay

Olympics
Political War
By François LeVert
The 2014 Sochi Olympics
games
are
losing
many
spectators because of a few
political issues which might be a
problem for Russia. Russia has a
law banning gay "propaganda"
among minors, but Russia says
it will not discriminate against
anyone at the Olympics based
on this law. There have been
many protest and some riots
because of this law and this has
led a number of Western
political leaders to boycott the
February
7th
Opening
Ceremony and the Games.
This is less of a politics issue but
Russia has been a victim of
back-to-back suicide bombings
which has killed 34 people in
the city of Volgograd. A Muslim
militant
group
claimed
responsibility for the bombings
and they say that they will bomb
the games which will be a
gigantic problem for Russia and
the Games in general. The
Olympic
committee
has
guaranteed us that the Games
will be completely safe but
many fans are still concerned
for their safety.
captains. In my opinion, if team
Canada put a lot of effort during
their games, they will make it to
the finals. This year, team
Canada have many skilled and
strong players on every line-up,
these games will be very
interesting to watch. Team
Canada also has three good
goaltenders they will use it to
their advantage.
German team with their rainbow coloured
uniforms
Russia has spent a record of 51
BILLION dollars (US) on the
Olympics, for Olympic venues
as well as roads, tunnels,
railways and hotels so that Sochi
can become a year round resort.
But critics say that billions of
dollars have disappeared in
corrupt deals but this has not
been confirmed. With all the
money they’re spending on the
Olympics, revenues might be a
dilemma, but it IS the Olympics
so I personally don’t think it will
be a problem. The Olympic
committee said more than 70 %
of the tickets have been sold
and the other 30 % will be
available for purchase at the box
offices on site. Even with all the
talk of bombings and anti gay
laws, the Olympic committee
will be determined to show us
that the Olympic Games will be
a huge success.
Men’s Hockey
Team Canada
Sochi 2014
By Monique Comeau
The 2014 Sochi winter games
have finally arrived! So much
fun and entertainment from
different winter sports and
teams all around the world. One
sport we love and lots of
Canadian fans are looking
forward to, is men’s hockey.
Hockey Canada has finally
announced the final roster of
the men’s hockey team!
Canadian hockey fans from all
over Canada has found out that
Sidney Crosby, captain of the
Pittsburg penguins, who scored
the
gold-medal-winning
overtime goal against the United
States in Vancouver four years
ago will be wearing the “C” for
team Canada at the upcoming
winter games. Jonathan Toews
of the Chicago Blackhawks and
Shea Weber of the Nashville
Predators were named alternate
was also a last minute change
before the opening ceremonies,
the center of the Tampa bay
lightning, Steven Stamkos had
to pull out due to his injury back
in November when he broke
his tibia. Replacing him in the
line-up is 38 year old Martin
Saint-Louis, captain of the
Tampa Bay lightning.
Canada will face Norway their
first game, then Austria and
Finland afterwards. If Canada
plays as well as they did in
Vancouver they should advance
to the finals! Don’t miss out!

did not turn out to be as much
of a disaster like the most recent

only 14 people died. It may
seem like a big loss because here
in Canada we are very fortunate
to not have many of these
incidences happen, but in Russia
at the moment, those numbers
of deaths are very few. How are
those related to the recent

these little bombings are going

I guess we will just have to sit
and hope nothing happens at
the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Although Vladimir Putin may
try to prevent these bombings.
It is still a big possibility that
they might still happen at the
Olympics this year.
A Peaceful
Journey to the
Olympics
By Peter Paper
The Olympics started a long
time ago in Greece- Olympia,
Greece to be exact. In front of
the
stadium
and
the
Hippodrome there is the temple
of Zeus, the King of all gods.
Inside the temple there was a
statue of Zeus made out of
ivory and gold. It was sculpted
by the Athenian sculptor,
Phidius.
The hippodrome and the
stadium were where all the
contests were held. Beside it
there was a wrestling school
known as the Palestra. ON the
other side there was a
gymnasium, where all the
competitors had to train for at
least a month.
The Olympics were held every
four years by the Greeks. It
started in 776 B.C. They were
dedicated to the Olympian gods.
It had been going on for twelve
years when the emperor
Theodosius declared them to be
part of a pagan cult and banned
them.
Olympia was not a town, but
rather a sanctuary east of the
town, Pelopomisos. Olympia
was very important to the
Greeks since it was a shrine that
had temples, monuments, altars,
theatres and statues. These were
the treasures the Greeks loved
since it was their art.
The victor got his first award
right after the competition. He
would get a palm branch from
the
herald,
named
a
Hellanodikis,
while
the
spectators cheered and threw
him flowers. Afterwards, red
ribbons were tied to him to
declare his victory. On the last
day of the games at the temple
of Zeus, the official award
ceremony would begin. The
herald would announce the
winner’s name, the name of his
father and the name of his
homeland. After that he would
get to wear a kotinos (a sacred
olive tree wreath) on his head. It
was a huge honour to win the
games.
In the formation of the Olympic
Games there were three
characters that came up a lot.
They were Zeus, Pelops and
Hercules. They held the
Olympic festival in honour of
Zeus since he was the chair of
the great pantheon of gods. He
once marked the Olympics with
a thunderbolt. The Greeks
believed that it was a sign of
sacred precinct.
Pelops is the mythical founder
of the games. Pelops came to
the king’s temple and the king’s
daughter fell in love with him.
The king had a rule that the only
way someone could marry his
daughter was to win a race, and
he won the race. After the race
he turned into a good king.
Hercules founded the games at
the place where Pelop’s tomb
was found. Hercules is the
greatest hero known to Greece.
He was in slavery to the king of
Argos, but he got out of slavery
after he performed twelve
labours. After he instituted the
first games in honour of Zeus,
putting one foot in front of
another six hundred times.
The Olympic flame came from
another tradition of the Greeks:
they lit the flame at sunrise of
the first day and it stayed lit
until the sunset of the last day
of the games. The torch lighting
has had a lot of themes over the
years; try to guess which
country had which theme:

Kayaking
Building
Athletes
By Chanel Coté-Moss
Kayaking has been building up
over the past few years, and has
become quite popular in Nova
Scotia. There are many events
for young children as well as
adults. One of the most popular
clubs is right here in Halifax.
On Kearney Lake, at the
Maskwa Aquatic Club, recently
eight athletes from Maskwa
Aquatic Club have qualified for
the 2017 Canada games core
team. Maskwa’s very own Mark
Dejonge brought home bronze
for Men k1 200m at the 2012
London Olympics. Clubs such
as Maskwa , Banook, Senobe,
Cheema ect. give young athletes
a chance to aspire into great
talented athletes. This sport
teaches athletes to work hard
and go for the gold.
Not only is there this particular
racing type of kayaking but
there are also a lot of people
doing ocean kayaking. In a
recent interview with ocean
kayaker Nigel Foster, he stated
that he started ocean kayaking
as a kid because his parents
always taught him and his
siblings to try new things
‘’Kayaking offered me a special
kind of solo freedom’’ he says.
This sport really does build
incredible athletes. The kind of
training these young people get
is amazing. Kayaking isn’t only
big in Nova Scotia but all across
Canada.
In fact every year there is one
big regatta ‘’nationals’’ in which
paddlers from all across Canada
compete. Every four years, it’s
held here in Nova Scotia at Lake
Banook. Maskwa Aquatic Club’s
very own Andrew Jessop will be
attending the 2016 Olympics in
Rio. Both Mark Dejonge and
now Andrew Jessop are the kind
of people who give young
athletes
inspiration
and
motivation.

Here at École secondaire du

for almost everyone! In the past
couple of years, since the school

pretty
amazing
accomplishments, including 23

This year, both the senior boys
soccer and volleyball teams will
be competing in Division 1 for
the first time. Also, nearly half
of the senior boys volleyball

In an interview the US News
had with Winston here’s what
he had to say; “oh, man, it's
really overwhelming," he said.
"I'm really happy. I have the
whole entire world behind us.
The Jamaican bobsled team is
very popular, but when I see
and hear that the whole entire
world, even the Middle East —
I mean, really, there's a place in
the Middle East that calls me
and I don't even know its name
— we have fans from so far
away. For a little tiny island, it's
so emotional." As you can see
Winston is pretty excited to be
going to Sochi.

The Hottest
Thing on Ice
By Yannick Laberge
The bobsled team from Jamaica
will go to the 2014 Sochi
Olympic Games. The team was
struggling to fund this expensive
trip and was hoping for
sponsors along with the money
they got from the Jamaican
Olympic association.
The whole team made the two
men bobsleigh competition but
the full team roster is the
following: Their nickname
is “the hottest thing on ice”
which is ironic but true since
Jamaica is a hot country.
The two men participating are
Winston Watts and Marvin
Dixon. The last time the
Jamaican bobsled team qualified
for the Olympics was in 2002.
Winston Watts came out of
retirement and has competed in
bobsled in 1994, 1998 and 2002
and is now going to compete in
the 2014 Sochi games. The team
needed 80,000$ to go to Sochi
and has now achieved the goal
through social media like kick
starter.
Back in 1988 they inspired the
film Cool Runnings a film talking
about a team from Jamaica
learning how to bobsled and
going to the Olympics Winston
Watts admits to watching the
film a lot.
A bit of history from the team
Jamaica: They made their first
appearance in 1988 and were
considered the underdogs the
team again participated in the
1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002
games but have failed to qualify
for the 2006 and 2010 games
but are now coming back in full
force for Sochi.
On the TV News show called
CNN 3 members were there
and the news lady asks this
question: How does a Jamaican
get into bobsledding? Winston
explained how they practiced in
a push cart derby on a track and
they practice the run off and
then jumping on the cart (he
also made a reference to the
movie). He also explained on
how they got the team together,
since they could not find
athletes on the streets to
compete they turned to the
military and there they found a
few of the team members and
here they are competing today.
The Jamaican bobsled team (2
men) is going the Sochi 2014
Olympic Games. They HAVE
raised the money to go to the
Olympics. They are very excited
to go to the biggest competition
ever and they cannot wait to
compete in the 2 men bobsled
competition.

The
game
is
scheduled to be on February 2,

New

Kickoff will be at 6:25 Eastern

The Denver Broncos finished
the season with a 13-3 record
and ended up winning the AFC
championship. The Broncos
had the best offense in the
league. They scored a total of
606 points, the highest in NFL
history. The man in charge of
the offense is Peyton Manning,
16 year veteran quarterback who
started off his career with the
Indianapolis Colts. He appeared
in 11 Pro Bowls, won 4 NFL
MVP
awards
and
one
championship ring in Super
Bowl XLI.
On the Seahawks side they have
second year Russell Wilson, 3rd
overall pick in the 2012 NFL
draft. On his rookie year he
brought the Seahawks to the
playoffs but lost in the semifinals against the falcons. He has
improved a lot in the last year
and was able to bring his team
to the finals and win the Super
Bowl.
I thought it was going to be a
close game but the Seahawks
were demolishing the broncos
throughout the whole game. It
was the first time in Seahawks
history to win the Vincent

The Super Bowl isn’t just
known for football, it is also

Chelsea is the only British club
who has won all three UEFA

first one to hold two major

all.
Also in 2012 they won the

making them the fourth club,
after Juventus, Ajax and Bayern

make the playoffs.
In today’s NHL, you can go
from 9th place to 16th place in
two games. This month, the
Maple Leafs only have four
games left against the Panthers,
Lightening, Canucks, and the
Islanders. For the Maple Leafs,
that should be an easy eight
points and with the way they
have been playing lately, they
can do it. So as of February 4th,
I would consider the Leafs a
playoff contender.
I wouldn’t be talking about this
position, but since Mike Tolbert
is so good ill talk about it. It’s
the fullback who does the dirty
work. He’s an excellent blocker
and only 5’9 245 pounds. Now
the running back position,
onathan Stewart was out almost
the whole year with an injury, so
DeAngelo Williams was in and
got 843 yards running the ball
with 26 receptions compared to
13 and 16 in 2012 and 2011.
Cam Newton steps up
How did the
Carolina
Panthers get
so good in
2013?
by Samuel Amirault
The Carolina Panthers, the team
that was 7-9 and under 500 a
year ago is now one of the best
teams in the NFL. Why, how?
Those are the questions and
many more that I will answer in
this article.
First we start at the most
important position on the field,
the quarterback. Cam Newton
has really stepped up this
season. He had a 24 to 19
touchdown to interception
rating this season and 3379
yards passing this season. He
also had 585 yards running this
year and only 3 fumbles this
year compared to 10 and 5 the
past 2 years.
The offensive line was also
really stepped up from last
season with good players Ryan
Kalil and Jordan Gross, but
Byron Bell (right tackle) and
Geoff Hangartner (left guard)
got on a hot streak protecting
Cam.
I think the most improved
position on this football team is
the wide receivers, first you’ve
got Steve Smith, a future hallof-famer, and before this season
he was the only weapon for
Cam.
Now Ted Ginn has immerged
from nothing, played for the
49ers for a season before getting
cut and signing with the
Panthers and got 36 receptions
with a salary of 750 000$ (which
is amazing). Then you’ve got
Brandon LaFell, a speed wide
receiver who got 49 receptions
from 540 000$ (which is even
more incredible).
The defense is
even
more
amazing than the
offense by a lot so
let’s start at the
big boys, the
defensive
line.
Greg Hardy, a
former
third
round pick who
tied the team record with 15
sacks the season before
becoming a free agent. Kawann
Short (rookie 2nd round pick)
and Star Lotulelei (rookie 1st
round pick) are run stoppers, so
run stopping on the inside sacks
on the outside.
The young Panthers linebacker
Luke Kuechly has evolved into
one of the best in the league,
with sideline to sideline speed
and excellent tackling ability I
see him as the next Ray Lewis.
Thomas Davis has great stats
with over 200 tackles, 4 sacks
and 2 interceptions and is and
great outside guy. Chase
Blackburn has been great
coming from the Giants with
speed and hitting ability.
The defensive backs are the last
part of this article, and Captain
(that is his actual first name, not
a nickname) Munnerlyn had a
great season with 12 passes
batted
down
and
2
interceptions. Drayton Florence
had a good season with the
Panthers coming over from
Denver with 9 passes batted
down and 2 interceptions.
Safety Quintin Mikell is a trash
talker, but is efficient at blitzes
and had no interceptions, but 70
tackles and 3 sacks.
new elements were found, but it
is unknown what these specific
elements are. The police did not
give any clues exceptt that they
are now looking at the kitchens
for the answer.

Fire in a
Senior’s Home
in Quebec
By Olivier Blais
At 00h25 in the night of the
January 23, a senior’s home
caught on fire in the small town
of L’isle-Verte, Quebec. The
firemen had to fight the fire in
icy conditions which made the
job incredibly harder.
For now the origin of the fire is
unknown, but the results are
terrifying. The January 23rd at
night, the senior’s home called
Résidence du Havre went on fire.
The oldest part of the building
was completely destroyed. That
section did not have sprinklers,
while the newest had some.
The fire was deadly and fast.
Many people who lived there
needed help to move. Some of
them were blind, other deaf or
had respiration difficulties. Of
the 32 originally reported
missing, 27 died and five are still
missing. About 20 were saved.
The morning of the fire, the
firemen had to fight in terrible
conditions because of the snow
and temperature. Ice covered
almost everything and at some
places it was a foot or more
deep. After all the fire was out,
they had to search for corpses.
That was also proved to be
extremely difficult. The police
and investigators worked on
shifts of 12 hours. The
determination was solid and
unbreakable.
The journalists started to talk
about a cigarette being the
reason of the fire. Suspicions
were raised that it could
originate from a unextinguished
cigarette butt. People even
asked Jean André Arsenault if
his father had smoked that day.
“We don’t know. They can’t
even let us live us with our
grief” he says. His father is not
part of the ones who escaped.
He is enraged. “We don’t know.
We know nothing (…) Wait for
the facts before saying things
that aren’t true. If it’s true, I will
accept it. But even the police
isn’t sure.” The theory of the
cigarette is being questioned as
The question about sprinklers
and the number of surveillance
personnel at night was raised.
The minimum number of
personnel at night is one person
for 199 rooms or less. It is not
sure if the law will be modified.
The prime minister came to see
the scene. He also took part of
the ceremony dedicated to the
memory of the people who
died. The pope sent a message
of sympathy to the heart-broken
community.
The Calgary
Flood
Isabelle Lamoureux
In 2013 from May to June the
capital of Alberta was flooded
It started with heavy rain for
two days, the snow got heavier
and harder to drive in that
weather there was lots of traffic.
On Wednesday, water started to
flood the streets and soon the
highway was a big puddle, the
flood destroyed houses and
buildings.
While the flood occurred a man
went in the water to save his cat
called
Momo
who
was
drowning in the water.
Why did the flooding occur, the
snow from mountains were
melting and adding the rain
didn’t help and the wind blew
the water towards Calgary.

Education?
By Maya Knowlan
Do you hate school? Is it just
boring and a waste of time?
Many girls all around the world
would trade situations with you
in a heart beat. There are
millions of girls who wish and
dream of going to school just
like you but cannot because of
beliefs, religion, social factors
and legal factors as well. One
girl in particular was special. Her
name is Malala Yousafzai. Her
biggest wish was education, it’s
all she wanted for her, the girls
of her small village, Swat, in
Pakistan and the rest of the
unprivileged girls in the world.
She was born in Mingora,
Pakistan the 12th of July, which
made her the age of fifteen
when, on October 9th, 2012 she
was shot in the head by the
Taliban*. In an attempt to end
her girl’s rights campaign that is
focused on getting every
unprivileged girl in the world a
proper education, the Taliban
surrounded her school bus one
evening after school and asked
for Malala by name. A few of
Malala’s friends glimpsed at her
and that was hint enough. With
a colt 45, the Taliban just
missed their aim, Malala’s skull,
and the bullet fired down into
her left cheek landing deep in
her left shoulder. She was
flown out to the UK to receive
medical help in the queen
Elizabeth hospital. Two of
Malala’s friends were also
injured during the attack but
Malala had the worse injuries,
the doctors that treated her did
not think she would survive.
During her recovery, all over
the world there were protests
and gatherings demanding
women’s rights for education
and rallies spreading her name
and what had happened. Malala
has now fully recovered from
her injuries and has undergone
facial reconstruction. She is
now, just like before, a peaceful
activist for women’s right of
education. She lives in the UK
and is a public speaker
explaining her journey and why
she thinks education is so
important and has now become
the youngest person ever to be
nominated for a Nobel Peace
Prize. Malala says her father
encouraged her a lot to speak
out about her situation. * The
Taliban is a religious political
party (or group) that was in
power from 1996 to 2001. After
a while, the people noticed their
horrible mistreatment towards
women and the Taliban was
rejected by the people, but, the
Taliban still stayed in power in
small areas in certain parts of
Afghanistan
and
Pakistan,
including Malala’s village. They
very strongly believed that
women should not go to school
and because of that there were
more than 400 schools blasted
and, what started in about
January of 2009, about three
killings every night. Malala
always believed that education
was like power to women and
that’s why the Taliban wanted
to take it away. So remember
that next time you don’t want to
go to school.

Nelson Mandela’s Nobel Peace Prize
A Great Hill to
Climb
By Victoria MacDonald
Nelson Mandela passed away in
December 2013. It was the end
of a great leader`s life. Mr.
Nelson Mandela was born July
18th 1918 in Mvezo, South
Africa. He graduated from high
school and continued to study
at University College of Fort
Hare but protested and got
expelled. He then continued to
University of South Africa and
graduated at University College
of Fort Hare. After his
education Nelson Mandela
joined the ANC (African
National Congress) in 1944. In
1960 the ANC was banned and
he argued for the creation of the
military wing within the ANC.
In the year 1958, Nelson
Mandela married a social worker
named Winnie Madikizela. Than
within four years had two
daughters;
Zanani
and
Zindiswa.
The beginning of Mandela’s 27
year prison sentence was 1962.
In the beginning of that year
Nelson Mandela left the country
and fled to England and got
military training in Ethiopia and
Morocco. In July of that year he
was arrested for leaving the
country illegally and was
sentenced to five years with
hard labor. In 1964 year he went
to trial and was than sentenced
to life imprisonment.
Before his release in February
1990 the ANC was unbanned
and Nelson was released with
certain conditions. And slowly
his co-workers for the ANC

Flu Shot
Mistake

Flu shots in high demand
Pandemic has
Returned
By John Ramia
H1N1
is
an
infectious
respiratory virus that can begin
in your throat, nose or even
lungs. The H1N1 flu is also
known as the swine flu. It's
called swine flu because in the
past, the people who caught it
had direct contact with pigs.
Swine flu is contagious, and it
spreads the same way as
seasonal flu. H1N1 symptoms
are theses followings:
•fever
•cough
•sore throat
•body aches
•headache
•chills
•no appetite
•nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
•runny nose
In 2009, H1N1 was spreading
fast around the world. H1N1
was first detected in the US in
April 2009. Between April and
October 2009 (in US), 22
million people had the flu, 3,900
people died from H1N1
including 540 children. The
virus entered its post-pandemic
phase in 2010 and is now one of
several seasonal flu strains seen
in Canada. Since 2009, people
have continued to get sick from
swine flu but not as many.
H1N1 flu cases are beginning to
appear across Canada. There are
now 965 confirmed cases in
Alberta and 270 of those people
are in the hospital. Five people
have died in Canada. Three in
Edmonton and two in Calgary.
All five deaths were related to
the H1N1 flu.
More than 200 people were
lined up for flu shots at one of
two Calgary Clinics. They
announced on CTV news that
Alberta received the last
shipment of H1N1 vaccine on
the planet. The H1N1 virus in
Alberta concerns Nova Scotia
because people intend to travel
now because of the Olympics.
Also because the provinces are
close to each other. If you have
H1N1, here's what you should
do:
•Stay home
•Rest
•Stay away from other people in
your home
•Drink lots of fluids
Some people think he’s a good

he’s a doctor who has
something in mind. Something
that he has tried before, once
from 1992-1994 also from 2003
till this day. He thought this
would work I’m not saying it
didn’t I’m just saying that it’s
not proven to work. He thinks
that you should put many
vaccines into one shot to reduce
the number of needles that
people will need.
500 children need to be

department says that the
vaccinations that they have
received are ineffective. This has
all happened here in Halifax.

She said she was walking when
someone grabbed her hair from

wanted her wallet and even head
butted her, she dropped her
wallet but the man ran off
without it.
The man put his hand over her
breast and pushed her. Officers

Bluenose II
Rebuild
By Serge Comeau
The Bluenose was given a
budget of $375 000. But since
September the HRM has given
$1.3million the total cost of
$14.8m to $16.5m and that’s
only the start of the problems.
The project was supposed to be
only a year and a half but it is
over four year. Many Nova
Scotia are feed up with the
NDP and their choices. The
Bluenose II replica was
launched in 1963 from the
original Bluenose 1921 Grand
Banks fishing schooner that
won the worldwide acclaim for
its lines and speed.
It would be pointless to stop the
build because there is over
millions of dollars already in the
project and the government isn’t
going to stop till its done.

Typhoon

On Friday november 8th a
massive typhoon hit the
Philippines. It is known for the
biggest tropical storm to ever hit
land with winds blowing at over
195mph. They say that they
would find 20 to 30 bodies a
day, nearly 5 weeks after the
typhoon hit. Over 6,000 people
have been reported dead and
over 1,800 people still are
missing. And over 27,000
people have been injured in
total. They had nowhere to put
the bodies so they just left them
in the streets in body bags.
Japan is going to provide 10

1,000 troops and also sending
aircrafts and naval vessels. The
Asian development bank as
provided 500 million dollars to
help the Philippines recover.

Earthquake
Shakes New
Zealand
The Coldest
Snowiest
Winter Ever?
By Sophiya Potey
Emma McShane
Magnitude
6.3
earthquake
occurs on the lower North
Island of New Zealand near the
capital Wellington on January
20, 2014. It strikes at 3:52 P.M.
The tremor had its epicentre
34km from the city of
Palmerston. Luckily, there were
no deaths or injuries.
Many people in Canada and
even in some parts of the States
are struggling to remember the
last time it was so cold and for
so long. Just over a month has
passed in 2014 and we’ve
already seen record-breaking
snowfalls and well below zero
temperatures.
News media reported local
damage and disruption to power
and transport services. All trains
on the rail network in the lower
part of the North Island were
halted while inspectors checked
tracks for damage, the stateowned transportation company
KiwiRail said. Falling rocks were
also reported on some roads.
The quake cut off electricity for
about 5,600 people. It was felt
as far away as the cities of
Wellington and Napier, which
are more than a 100 km away
from the epicenter.
Many places in the states
including Indiana, Cincinnati,
Chicago and Detroit have
already had an unexpected
amount of snow this January.
The earthquake also reached
Wellington Airport, where it
shook a sculpture of a great
eagle loose from some of its
suspending lines, bringing it
sinking down to the floor of the
main terminal building. The bird
is one of two huge eagle
sculptures, installed in the
terminal building last month,
that draw their inspiration from
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of
Smaug,” the second part of a
trilogy of movies filmed in New
Zealand.
As for Nova-Scotia, from
freezing cold temperatures, to
school and flight cancelling
blizzards, we’ve definitely seen
most of what winter has to
offer. On the other hand, we’re
not the only ones who’ve had
bad weather. I’m sure you have
all heard of the destructive
freezing rain and ice storm in
Toronto, Ontario in December.
The storm left hundreds of
thousands without power for
many days.
Climatologists say that they
were expecting that it would be
colder than normal but not this
cold. What we’ve seen so far
this winter is pretty much what
we’re going to
get for at least
another month,
so don’t put
away your
winter wear
just yet!

Puppies Rescued
by the RCMP
By Shanelle Athena GavieresCournoyer
January 28, 2014 three liceridden puppies were all huddled
together in the middle of the
road. As the RCMP was driving
he had seen them thinking that
they were a rock. As he took
further investigation he took
them into the officer’s car. “The
puppies were shivering and dirty
as they appeared to be out in the
elements for a while” said the
RCMP officer Cpl. Scott
MacRea.
The three puppies were taken to
the Cole Harbour detachment,
where officers welcomed them
gave them food and water to
make them feel at home.
Litters’ n Critters in Upper
Tantalon decided to take the
puppies in the morning. Shelly

president
of
Litters’ n Critters animal rescue
said that Radar is a male and
that Cuffs and Siren are females.
Cuffs had a broken tail and is
now recovering, Siren had a
heart murmur and Radar has
frost bite on his back toes.
All three of these cute puppies
had canine lice and have scabs
all over their body from the lice.
Once they are finally recovered
all three pups will be adopted,
and they already have 11
applications, so they will be in
good hands.

A
building collapsed in
Bangladesh on April 24th.
There were few people that
survived in this tragedy. Some
people were at their homes
because of the risk of the
collapse of the building. But,
how did they know that there
will be a collapse? Let’s see how.
In the beginning of the
construction of the building was
supposed to be a mall. They
added two levels to the building
so that they could put more
people in the building so that
they could have more money.
That building’s cloths was being
bought by “Joe Fresh” and
“Loblaw Companies Ltd”. They
didn’t think about if the building
was safe or not. So when the
engineer came to see if
everything was under control;
they saw that the structure was
really fragile and that it will fall.
He told the boss of the building
that it might collapse. The
engineer told the employs that it
might even fall.
The next morning some people
had taken precautions and
didn’t go to work but some did
go. The same day, the building
collapsed just like the engineer
told the day before. There were
1,129 dead and few survivors.
The boss, Mr. Rana, of the
enterprise was arrested and put
in jail for adding three more
levels to the building and for the
death of innocent people.

A One Way
Trip to Mars
By Marianne Labrie
Do you see yourself living a
normal life on Mars one day?
Well, a bunch of other people
did. In May 2012, Mars One
announced that they would be
sending humans on Mars. They
also announced that it would be
a one way trip. So, to make it
simple, they send you into space
on a planet that’s all deserts and
no water, and you can’t ever
come back. I’m sorry if I made
this boring or scared you, but
it’s true. Their goals include;
starting human life on Mars,
help in scientific researches, etc.
This event is very big and a lot
of people tried to get in the trip.
Of course, the space of the ship
that’s going to Mars won’t be
very big. And so, the way
they’re going to select the
people that volunteered to go
out in space, they do selection
round. The first selection has
already been done. Right now,
they have 1058 candidates and
there are currently 75 Canadians
up for the trip.
But it doesn’t end there, in
seven years, of the 1,058
candidates; only 24 will actually
go through.
This event has created a lot of
drama and many stories about
families and students wanting to
go and leave everything behind.
Talking
about
Canadians, a man
about 20 years old
named
Tyler
Reyno is currently
selected to go up
on this red planet.
Mr Ken Sullivan
is one of the 1,058
volunteers
that
might get a ticket

father of four
Also, this shocking story; a 21
year old student told the media
that if ever she made the cut up
to 24 candidates, she would love
it. When the media asked her
about her family and if she
would miss anything on earth
and she answered that she
preferred leaving everything
behind.

Arrow took flight, the Avro
Arrow should have been one of
Canada`s greatest achievements
but it was scrapped by the
government. No one knows the
full reason, the government said
it cost too much to make but
honestly statistics show it would
have been the best choice to
make them they were much
cheaper than the ones currently
used.
But one of the most know
things in the de-commission of
the Avro Arrow is politics,
Minister John Diefenbaker
supposedly received a letter
from US government signed it
and that was that, people
wonder what was on that letter
maybe the US was afraid
because the Avro Arrow was so
ahead of its time? No one
knows for sure but what we do
know is that fifteen thousand
people lost their jobs as of the
stoppage of the Avro Arrow.
March 25th marks the 56th
anniversary since the Avro
Arrow first took flight, and
there is talk of brining this
Canadian built plane back.
Nintendo’s
Economic
Problems
By Liam Lefebvre
When Nintendo released the
Wii U on November 18 2012,
Nintendo loss a lot of money
and popularity in the electronic
business, do to not selling well
and
repetitiveness.
They
competed against two big
companies: Playstation, and
Microsoft with the new releases
of the PS4 (Playstation) and the
Xbox 1 (Microsoft).
They sold very poorly, and only
released 3 new games. Super
Mario, Donkey Kong, and
Legend of Zelda. Most People
did not like these games,
claiming they were too similar to
the past games that Nintendo
released for the Wii.
Nintendo is situated in Japan.
Even in its native country it is
not selling well. Nintendo tried
to fix the Wii U on January 29
2014. The press conference was
not successful and Nintendo
will be releasing a new console,
the name has not been released.
However if the new console is
not successful, Nintendo might
have to give up.
The Halifax
Farmers’
Market
by Aiden and Rachel
Have you ever heard of the
Farmers’ Market? Most people
in 8C have. In fact, nineteen out
of twenty-one students. Out of
those, thirteen have visited it.
Eight of them loved their
experience there, and five said
that their experience there was
OK.
The Farmers’ Market is very
eco-friendly building, so much
that it leaves almost a zero
carbon footprint, making it one
of the most eco-friendly
buildings in North America.
The majority of its power is
supplied by solar panels and
wind turbines places on the
rooftop deck, which also has a
rooftop garden. Rain water is
collected and used for nonpotable purposes, like toilet
water. Inside the building they
have a bio wall (a wall full of
plants), to improve the air
quality with natural air filtration.
Even the building’s wood is
recycled. They used mostly
salvaged wood for the building
itself, and wood from trees
destroyed in Hurricane Juan was
used to build stairs, handrails,
counters, and benches.
With over 200 vendors on the
busiest day, it is a very crowded
place. There are vendors of all
different types of prepared
foods, produce, pastries, art, and
much more! There are also
several musicians performing
live, with a variety of musical
instruments. In conclusion, we
think the market is a great place
to go for a great time.

Paul Walker
Paul unfortunately died at the
young age of 40 on November
30, 2013.
by Julia Landry
On November 30th, 2013, 40year old Paul Walker and 38year old Roger Rodas died in a
bad car accident. Roger Rodas
was the driver. The car was
going 100mph or more. There
were no drugs or alcohol
involved in the crash. It all
happened in Santa Clarita. Paul
Walker was about halfway
through filming Fast and
Furious 7. The car was going
very fast and hit a tree and a
pole on the driver’s side. Then
the car spun and hit into a
second tree on the passenger
side. After hitting the tree, the
car burst into flames. Both men,
walker and Rodas, had burns on
100% of their bodies. Paul
Walker was famous for many
movies, for example, Fast and
Furious 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, Eight
Below, Joyride, Running Scared
and Into the Blue. Paul Walker
once said: “If one day speed
kills me, don’t cry because I was
smiling.”
Paul Walker’s
Tragic Death
By Arielle Simard
That is a very good question.
Paul Walker did so many good
things in his life, like raising
exorbitant amounts of money
for charity by using his talents;
acting and racing. He also made
the Fast and the Furious movies
a huge hit.
That day, in Valencia, California
(United States) Walker was
driving with friend and business
partner Roger Rodas in a 2005
Porsche Carrera GT when
Roger lost control. ‘‘The force
was so strong that after the
driver’s side of the vehicle hit a
light pole and tree, the car
continued
spinning
until
Walker’s
passenger
side
slammed into another tree and
burst into flames’’, according to
The L.A. Times.
The vehicle almost split in half
and the bodies were badly
burned, even beyond visual
recognition. There were no
traces of alcohol or drugs in
either body. The accident
caused Paul’s body multiple
fractures but he died of both the
effects of traumatic and thermal
injuries.
Paul Walker loved cars, and
living life to the fullest, as he
shows in the Fast and the
Furious movie series. He was so
passionate about them, that he
made them such a huge part of
his life and success. So, it’s
ironic that his life ended in one
that is said to be ‘‘scary ’’ to
drive, even for pros (which
Roger, the driver, was not ).
Mr. Walker leaves everything
including £15million fortune,
estate and legacy of movies to
15 year old daughter Meadow,
in his will, executed by his
father. There is still hope for the
Fast and the Furious fans, since
Paul’s younger brother, Cody
Walker, will play his late
brother’s
character
Brian
O’Connor in the movies to
come. Paul Walker will be
greatly missed.
Makenzie
Wethington’s
Terrifying
Incident
By Rachelle Deforest
Have you ever thought about
going skydiving? If you have,
maybe you haven’t considered
the risks that you would be
taking.
Well on January 25th, Makenzie
Wethington definitely learned
how dangerous skydiving is,
after falling 3,000ft (900m) from
a skydiving incident. However,
Makenzie was lucky enough to
have survived.
On January 25th, Makenzie
Wethington went skydiving in
Oklahoma with her father Joe.
Makenzie is from Joshua, Texas
where the age requirement to go
skydiving is 18 and over, but her
and her father decided to take a
trip to Oklahoma and skydive,
where the age requirement is
only 16 and over. This was Joe`s
birthday gift to Makenzie, since
it was recently her 16th
birthday. There were 4 people
who went into their skydiving
plane: Makenzie, Joe, the
skydiving instructor and another
man who was going skydiving
too. Joe was the first to jump,
and then it would be the other
man, and lastly Makenzie.
At the last minute, the other
man backed out, because he was
too afraid, so the instructor did
not jump either. So Makenzie
jumped, without any help. Her
parachute was not opening for
some reason, and the instructor
observed that from the plane, so
he tried to tell her how to open
her
emergency
parachute
through her radio. She was not
responding and some think she
might have blacked out. Since
her father jumped before her, he
watched as his daughter spiraled
out of control and fell 3,000ft to
the ground.
She was then put in the
intensive care unit at the
Oklahoma City hospital. She
broke her pelvis, lumbar spine
in her lower back, multiple ribs,
a shoulder blade, a tooth and
hurt her liver. After her fall, Joe
said that the instructor should
not have let her jump out of
that plane alone. The skydiving
company owner said that there
was nothing wrong with her
parachute, and claims that
Makenzie did not follow the
directions that the company
gave her before the jump.
During the week of January
26th – February 1st, she was let
out of the ICU and was able to
communicate with her family
for the first time since her fall.
Her sister Meagan told some
interviewers a lot of her story,
and always said “God’s hand
caught her.”
Makenzie’s
school
and
classmates are also very
supportive and try to do
everything they can to help her
out. They had a pep rally in
honor of her and also had a
bake sale to help pay part of her
medical
bills.
Makenzie`s
mother Holly Wethington says
that all the school does for her
makes her so happy and is
making her recovery much
easier. She is currently in the
Baylor
Institute
for
Rehabilitation, and is planned to
stay there for several weeks,
since she has to learn to walk
and speak again. I must say this
is quite a miracle story and I
definitely agree with Meagan’s
statement. Makenzie is definitely
one of the luckiest people out
there.
Condolences

The tragic story of yet another
drug related death. Philip
Seymour Hoffman was found
dead in his apartment.
I'll
explain what happened, who he
was and a problem that might
effect a favorite movie trilogy;
The Hunger Games.
Philip
Seymour
Hoffman
by Sophia Hachey
Born in 1967, famous actor and
director
Philip
Seymour
Hoffman died on February 2nd,
2014.
Most know for acting in the
Hunger Games, Catching Fire
as Plutarch Heavensbee. He has
also worked with movies The
Master, The Ides of March,
Moneyball, Capote, Doubt and
Magnolia.
Father of three and married to
Mimi O’Donnell (1999-death)
He won Best Actor in films
Capote, Owning Mahowny, Jack
Goes Boating and Flawless.
Philip died at the age of 46 by
heroin overdose in West Village,
New York City, he was
discovered on a bathroom floor
with a syringe in his arm and
two bags of heroin where found
in his home.
Philip Hoffman was born on
July 23rd, 1967 making him 46
at the time of his death which
occurred on February 2nd,
2014. He grew up in Rochester,
New
York,
and
taking
advantage of that his mother
took him to see local theatre
productions. At the age of 12 he
was moved by the play "All My
Sons", but it wasn't until he was
older that he decided to pursue
his career in acting.
His first big role was as George
Willis Jr. in Scent of a Woman.
He has a lot of older movies
that I've never heard of, but I'll
mention a couple anyway. There
are "The Big Lebowski (1998),
"Happiness" (1998) and "The
Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999).
Philip has also stated in some
more recent movies such as
"Mission
Impossible:
III"
(2006), "Moneyball" (2011),
"The Master" (2012) and the
most recent "The Hunger
Games: Catching Fire" where he
played Plutarch Heavensbee the
head game maker. He's also
performed in many plays both
on and off Broadway. A couple
include; "Jack Goes Boating"
(2007), "Othello" (2009) and
"Death of a Salesman" (2012).
Hoffman was found in the
bathroom of his apartment in
New York City on February
2nd, 2014. Philip had been
struggling with an alcohol and
drug addiction for a while now
and last year he was put in a
drug rehabilitation program for
a week and a half. Officials
believe the cause of his death
was a drug overdose. The
supposed drug is said to be
heroin. He was found, by a
concerned friend, lying in the
bathroom with a needle sticking
out of his left arm. While
investigating the scene, police
found 10 glassine envelopes- 2
of which contained heroin and
the others were empty.
Now as sad as this is, I'm
curious as to what they are
going to do about his role in
"The Hunger Games". Since,
spoiler, he became a big part of
the uprise. Lions Gate said that
Hoffman had about a week of
filming left for the second part
of "Mockingjay". The release
date hasn't changed so I'm
thinking they're not going to
recast his part, but Lions Gate
hasn't issued a statement on
what they are planning to do.
He is said to be a phenomenal
actor, though I can't justify that
since I have not watched many
of his movies. I did see
"Catching Fire" and he executed
his part perfectly. So if they do
decide to recast his part I'm
guessing that it won't be easy.
I find this extremely sad since
he was not only a great actor,
but a dad too. He left behind his
three kids and his wife. Then
again I don't since celebrity
deaths all seem to be from drugs
nowadays and he was just
another victim of that. My
condolences go out to Philip's
family and loved ones for their
loss.
The Grammys
By Gabrielle Lepage
The Grammys are a time where
great musicians are discovered,
created and where the entire
world can tune in to recap the
best music of the year. It’s
where the stars are honored by
the “Big Four” and where the
biggest and greatest social event
of the season is created. This
year with a whopping 30
millions television viewers and
34 millions social media users
and internet surfers following
the trends, the 56th Annual
Grammy Awards were by far
one of the most successful live
televised shows ever.
As the producers prepared for
the big night, we could not have
asked for more then what they
gave us. With over the top
collaborations,
fabulous
nominees
and
amazing
performances, the expectations
were definitely met. When
watching the red carpet, you
knew that the night ahead was
going to be big with
appearances by Madonna, P!nk,
Katy Perry, as well as the duo
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
The polls had already started
blowing up beating on who
would win.
The show started with the
collaboration everyone was
waiting for, Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
You can’t ask for more. Being
the performers they are, they
put on a performance that
would only up the bar for the
rest of the evening. Jay-Z was
very covered, compared to his
wife who was in a body suit,
which I may add was quite
revealing.
After
that
performance, LL Cool J the
host of the event for the third
year in a row, came out and
introduces the night.
Nominations came with hard
work, love, passion, and lots of
support, and this year the
awards were given out to some
deserving artists. The “Big
Four” are the general categories,
or field which include: Record
of the Year (awarded to the
performer and production team
of a single song), Album of the
Year (awarded to the performer
and the production team of a
full album), Song of the Year
(awarded to the writers and
composers of a single song),
and finally Best New Artist
(awarded to an artist without
reference to a song or album).
The winners of these categories:
Record of the Year: Get Lucky
by Daft Punk feat. Pharrell
Williams & Nile Rodgers
Album of the Year: Random
Access Memories by Daft Punk
Song of the Year: Royals by
Joel Little & Ella Yelich
O’Connor (Lorde)
Best New Artist: Macklemore
& Ryan Lewis
The rest of the evening
consisted of handing out
multiples awards and of
performances. Some of the best
were: Hunter Hayes debuting a
new song, Katy Perry with a big
performance of Dark Horse,
P!nk’s two in one performance
presenting Try and Just Give
Me a Reason, Imagine Dragons
and Kendrick Lamar presenting
Radioactive (got a dance of
approval from Taylor Swift) and
Paul and Rango from the
Beatles performance of one of
Paul’s new comeback songs.
The evening ended with
something
spectacular;
34
wedding (gay and straight)
ceremonies to Same Love by
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
featuring Queen Latifah and
Madonna. It was spectacular.
The vocals were great, and as
you can imagine they got a
standing ovation.
Overall, the 56th Annual
Grammys’ from its new look to
fashion, and the music itself was
a total success
and was just
perfect
once
again. To see
all
of
the
nominations,
winners,

other
knickknacks on
the night go to

So we’ve all heard of the
Academy Awards, which are
also known as the Oscars. Well
this year, the 86th time they’ve
done these awards, is bound to
be a tough choice. First things
first; I’ll tell you about the
history of the Oscars and then
I’ll get down to this year’s
nominees.
The first Academy Awards were
held on May 16th, 1929 in the
Blossom
Room
of
the
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
This award show honoured
movies released from August
1st, 1927 to August 1st, 1928.
The event was also held three
months after the winners were
announced,
which
sadly
eliminated the surprise effect.
Back then only seven awards
were given out. At the 2014
Oscars, which will be held on
March 2nd, there will be twentyfour award categories.
This year the event will be
hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, so
it promises to be a good show.

Oscar include: Elizabeth Taylor,
Grace Kelly, Judy Garland,
Audrey
Hepburn,
Morgan
Freeman, George Clooney,
Jennifer
Lawrence,

I’d like to give all of the
nominees a big round of
applause, because it must take
an enormous amount of effort
to be nominated for the
distinguished acting award.
Personally I think that in a lot of
the categories it’s going to be a
showdown between American
Hustle and 12 Years a Slave
because they’re both very good
movies and they’re nominated
in most of the same categories. I
would also like to wish all of the
nominees good luck at the
award show next month.

Set to Retire
By Katherine Jardine
After 33 years of fame, Mötley
Crüe, a glam metal (a.k.a hair
metal) band is putting away their
guitars- but only after they say
goodbye to their fans. Tickets
are now on sale for their final
tour, featuring special guest
Alice Cooper, a 72 show tour
across the U.S and Canada.
Mötley Crüe has been described
as one of the world’s most
notorious rock bands- along
with Led Zeppelin, Queen, Kiss,
The Beatles, Metallica, AC/DC,
The Rolling Stones and others.
They are also one of the bestselling bands of all times, with
over 100 million albums sold, 20
million in the U.S alone. They
have reached seven platinum or
multi-platinum certifications; 22
Top 40 mainstream rock hits;
six Top 20 pop singles; a star on
the Hollywood Walk of Fame;
three Grammy nominations for
Best Hard Rock Performance;
and countless sold-out tours.
They have also released 5 New
In an interview, the band’s
singer, Vince Neil was asked
why they are retiring. “It’s time,
that’s really it,” he told the
Toronto Sun. “We’re going to
put out some new music next
year and then it’s our farewell
tour — we’ll do the world one
more time and then call it a day.
Our farewell tour (will be like)
2014 or ’15. Tours last about
two years. So to finish the
world, you’ve got to do the U.S.,
Canada, Europe, Asia…it takes
some time.”
In another interview with Vegas
Rocks! Magazine- "We didn't
want to be one of those bands
that start fading away. We've
been on top for 32 years, and
it's great. And it's just like, you
know what? By the time we
finish this tour, it'll be 35 years
of Mötley Crüe. So… that's
really kind of it."-Vince Neil.
They will be releasing new
music before they retire, but as
they’ve said, all bad things must
come to an end. They have
taken legal steps and signed a
contract stating that they would
no longer perform under the

Arrested For
DUI, Drag
Racing, and
Resisting
Arrest
By Cora Orovec
Justin Bieber was arrested early
on Jan 17 2014 in Miami Beach
for DUI (Driving under the
Influence), drag racing, drugs,
and later resisting arrest, nonviolently, by cursing at the
police.
When the police approached
Bieber’s car it was evident that
he was wasted. The police
report says Bieber was defiant
from the start yelling at the
cops. "Why the f**k are you
doing this?" As well as, "What
the f**k did I do? Why did you
stop me?" And when the officer
attempted to perform a
mandatory pat down Bieber
yelled "I ain't got no f**king
weapons, why do you have to
search me? What the f**k is
this about?"
He then claimed he was not
drunk, instead that he was
coming back from a recording
session, which is a lie, because
there is photographic evidence
that he was at a club.
Bieber was then taken into
custody and transported to the
police department where his
blood alcohol level was tested.
He was then taken to jail where
he was booked and processed.
Justin Bieber
by Abby Lefebvre
As most expected, the young
Canadian Justin Bieber has been
getting into lots of trouble; like
drinking, drugs, drag racing, and
more.
It all started after Justin’s
concert when he was arrested at
7:30am and taken to Waverly
Police Station. He was charged
with breaking and entering,
trespassing,

station where he was arrested.
During his mug shot, Justin
smiled as if he just loved being
there.
Now Bieber is in Toronto to
once again be arrested and turn
himself in after he hit a
limousine driver several times.
He will be in court on March
10th.
Kesha in
Rehab
by Bianca Saulnier
Next, the 19-year old was found
drag racing in a yellow
Lamborghini in Miami, Florida.
Justin and his buddy Khalil were
racing in a residential area at 55
to 60 mph, which is twice the
legal limit. And did you know
his fans actually blocked off the
street for him?
Kesha was sent to rehab on
January 3rd 2014. She is
attending Timber Knolls, which
is located right outside of
Chicago; Kesha’s mother is also
attending the rehab center.
Kesha is attending the rehab
center for 30 days.
Mid-way through the race, the
cops showed up and demanded
that Justin got out of the car.
After he did he started swearing
over and over when the police
asked him to put his hands on
the car. He denied and started
cursing again. Finally they
brought him to the police
Kesha is attending the rehab
center not for a drinking or drug
addiction but, from two eating
disorders, anorexia and bulimia.
The 26 year old singer/song
writer has been suffering from
those disorders for several years
but only recently came out with

mother, Pebe Sebert, from a gas
station telling her about how
much she been throwing up.
Her mom then said “ok” and
started contacting rehab centers.
Pebe said Kesha had agreed to
talk and liked what they had
said, and she had basically cried
until they got her there. Kesha
told her friends that her
producer, Dr. Luke, was one of
the reasons she became bulimic
and anorexic and he had
repeatedly told her she was a
“refrigerator.” Kesha is well
known as a party animal but she
barely even drank because she
didn’t want empty calories.
Kesha stated “I’m a crusader for
being yourself, but I’ve found it
hard to practice. I’ll be
unavailable for the next 30 days,
seeking treatment for my eating
disorders and to learn to love
myself exactly as I am. Kesha
should be out of rehab by now
but, if she’s not she will be
soon.

placed in certain categories. For
example, the best motion
picture in drama winner was 12
Years a Slave. The other
nominees were Captain Philips,
Gravity, Philomena and Rush.
Also Jennifer Lawrence won the
award of best supporting actress
in film, while Leonardo
Dicaprio won for the best actor
in the best actor in a Musical or

Amazon’s new
drone delivery
could arrive as
early as 2015
By Zachary Walters
In a couple years, you could be
getting your new ipod delivered
to your front yard by a drone,
thanks to Amazon. On
December 1st, 2013, CEO Jeff
Bezo announced that by 2015,
Amazon hopes to launch Prime
Air, an American service that
delivers packages via flying
drones in 30 minutes or less.
These drones are unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs) and have
eight spinning blades. The
blades are all electric, making
them much better for the
environment than delivery
trucks. They’re also more
efficient than trucks, because
they have a direct route, instead
of driving on roads, or getting
stuck in traffic. They are able to
carry packages that weigh up to
five pounds. While this may not
seem like a lot, Jeff Bezo states
that that is 86% of the packages
the company currently delivers.
Jeff says the drones are sent
from the many distribution
centres and then directed to the
destination by GPS.
There are still a lot of wrinkles
that Amazon needs to iron out
before you see the drones
zipping over your head every
day.
The FAA (Federal Aviation
Administration)
is
the
Bell, let’s talk.
By Emilie Albert
administration that makes all the
laws regarding aircrafts and
airspace.
Before
Amazon
launches this service, the FAA
needs to work on laws and
loosening its policies regarding
UAVs and they say that public
safety is their number one
priority. There’s a concern that
the drones could crash into
people, homes, trees, and even
low flying aircrafts. To prevent
this, Amazon will have to
improve on the currently
technology of the drones by
working on the sense-and-avoid
technology, so the drones avoid
common obstacles.
There’s also the possibility of
theft, anyone could shoot the
drones down and steal the
package, or hack it and fly it to a
different location. What if you
see it landing in someone’s yard
and decide to steal it? There is a
camera on the drones to help
prevent that, but that raises a
privacy concern. Not everyone
is fine with being spied on by a
drone. Amazon would also need
the drone to work in inclement
weather, where now they are
only able to fly in light
precipitation.
Maybe the United States may
not be the best country for
Amazon to initially launch the
service. It's taken a while for
the FAA to loosen its policies
on commercial drones. They
don’t expect new regulations
until
August.
Therefore,
Amazon might go to other
countries. Timothy Reuter, who
heads a D.C.-based drone
hobbyists' group, says Canada
might be a suitable choice. "It's
not so far away, but they're
much more permissive," he
says. That’s right. There’s a
possibility we might see Prime
Air before the U.S.
Drones have already been used
for commercial use in other
countries like cake in China and
beer in South Africa. Domino’s
Pizza also released a video in
2013 suggesting that they could
be delivering pizza by drone in
the U.K.
What do you think? Are drones
a practical way of package
delivery?
How much is your cell phone
bill? Do you have data, caller
ID, any special perks? These
days’ companies such as Bell,
Telus, and Rogers can be
charging you a fortune for your
cell phone. If you want data,
you can easily start the price for
your plan at fifty dollars. Six
hundred dollars a year? That’s
before you go over your 3G.
Almost 75% of Canadians have
cell phones and over an online
poll 42% of the responding said
they keep their phones on them
90 to 100% of the day. More
and more teenagers have cell
phones and get obsessed with
apps, games, and social
networking, making phone
companies be all too happy to
bring the charges up to 70 to 80
dollars.
Finally this situation was put to
good use. In 2010 bell said over
the next 5 years they would
donate $50 million to mental
health
initiatives.
Tuesday
January 28th Bell has once again
held a huge fundraiser for
Canadian
mental
health
programs; donating five cents,
every text, hashtag, long
distance call or Facebook share
of our Bell Let’s Talk image
(below) through bell or
#BellLetsTalk. All proceeds
went
to
mental
health
programmes. This year so far
they raised 5,472,585 $, and they
are still doing other fundraisers
such
as
“Clara’s big
ride” other
activities.
Best Tech of
2013
By TheJakenator
Okay, first of all this is MY
LIST. If I wanted your opinion
I would have asked you. Glad I
got that out of the way. This
isn’t the best and most
informant list out there, I’m
only a 13 year old kid writing a
newspaper article for a school
newspaper. What we’re you
expecting. Want one? GO ON
THE INTERNET! Do you
even care about my mini-review
of each thing or do you just
want the list of things? Here you
go! Ipad Air, Nokia Lumia 1020,
Google Glass, Oculus Rift and
Ps4/Xbox One. I’m going to
stop writing (almost wrote
talking) about stuff that has
nothing to do with my
newspaper article. Oh yeah, one
last thing, it’s not in a particular
order. Let’s start it off with the
Ipad Air. –TheJakenator 
Ipad Air
Your first thoughts of this being
on the list are “ITZ THE
SAME
AS
EVERY
FREEKINGGG
OTHER
IPAD”, well no, let me tell you
why. First of all, it’s the lightest
Ipad and even the lightest in its
class (only 486g!), hence the
name “Ipad Air”. It’s almost a
drop of 200g from the Ipad 4 so
it’s not the same. Most of the
design is taken strait from the
Ipad mini 2. Tough aluminum
encases the back and sides of
this bundle of joy and video
games. But, if you get the 4G
version than there`s a small
plastic panel where the
antennas are. It’s not
only the weight that has
improved but also its
size, its much thinner
and narrower than its
predecessors. The Ipad
Air has retina display,
which is amazing! The
Ipad Air has some stereo
speakers which are a step
up from the Ipad 4 but both
speakers are at the bottom
which wasn’t a good choice
from Apple. The Ipad Air
performs really well and it
doesn’t overheat. Do you still
think “ITZ THE SAME AS
EVERY
FREAKINGGG
OTHER IPAD”? I doubt it.
Nokia Lumia 1020
“What’s this?” you ask yourself
“another smart phone? Nothing
amazing there.” You say.
Hmmm, well does every smart
phone have a 41 mega pixel
camera (the Iphone has 8 mega
pixel camera)? No? Anyway, the
Nokia Lumia 1020 isn’t the best
for speed or anything like that;
the camera is what’s amazing on
the phone. Even though it’s not
the best in the other categories,
it’s definitely not the worse. It
has a 720p HD 4.5-inch screen.
One of the only downsides to
this phone is that it runs on the
Windows Phone operating
system, which doesn’t have
many apps on the app store.
This is definitely the phone for
you if you love taking high
quality photos.
Photo taken with Nokia Lumia 1020
Google Glass
I know this isn’t technically out
yet but ITS MY LIST. Ever
heard of smart watches? Google
glass has the same concept. It
connects to your smart phone
and performs tasks like, playing
music, taking calls and sending
messages. It can also take videos
and pictures. That’s pretty much
it but it has lots of potential.
Let’s hope that they can find a
cheaper design than they have
currently (1,500$).
Oculus Rift
The new virtual boy! No way!
(If you don’t know what it is,
search it up). It’s way better
than that! It actually works! If
you don’t know how the Oculus
Rift works, it’s a step forward in
virtual reality. There are a lot of
sensors in the front and sides of
these huge goggles thingies, so
in game if you look to the
left/right/up/down in real life
the character/scene will also
look left/right/down/up. They
just came out with a 1080p
version. Warning! When you use
this you might get sick and
dizzy. The Oculus Rift isn’t in
store yet, but you can buy some
online (eBay, kijiji, etc.). It’s a
huge step in virtual reality
gaming.
Ps4/Xbox One
Okay, now we’re on to my
favorite one (not necessarily the
best one). Why? Because I own
a flipping Ps4! Anyway, I put
the Ps4 and the Xbox One in
the same spot because, let’s be
honest, there are practically the
same (If you want to see an in
depth VS than check out my
article on the first newspaper).
The Ps4/Xbox One are the 7th
generation of home consoles.
They are a big upgrade from
their
predecessors
(better
graphics, etc.). If you don’t have
a good computer, home console
or have a WII and you want to
go hardcore than consider
buying one of these. They’re
cheaper than a good gaming
computer. Probably, the only
thing that is bad with these
consoles is that there isn’t a
huge library of good games but
there will be soon.
Welcome back to my useless
rant of uselessness. Did you like
the list? No? Well, you just
wasted 10 minutes of your life.
Did I just hurt your feelings?
Here’s a virtual hug. *Hugs the
screen*. Okay, I can’t think of
anything funny right now. So
I’m going to have to end it right
now. Good bye!
Is Texting
while Walking
Dangerous?
by Gabrielle Hanson
Canada has made texting while
driving a high-fine or, in bad
cases, a jail-time offence after so
many deaths and injuries in the
past few decades. Did you know
that texting while walking can
be just as dangerous?
It is estimated that there are
over 4,000 deaths, and over
60,000 injuries world-wide each
year because of this. Town
officials had enough distracted
textures walking into lamp
posts, other pedestrians, and
even into traffic, that they are
thinking of fining pedestrians
who text.
Studies have shown that people
who type, text, or read on their
phones while walking and less
likely to look at their
surroundings,
keep
their
balance, have had posture, or
walk in a straight line.
Researchers looked at the
effects of texting while walking
in 25 healthy people. Each
person was asked to walk in a
straight line three times; once
without a cellphone; once while
reading on a cellphone, and
once while texting on a
cellphone.
Texting changed the body’s
movement while walking. When
typing a text, the participants
walked slower, swerved more
and moved their necks less than
when they walked without
texting or reading.
There was also an effect on
head movement while texting or
reading a text that could make
balance more difficult.
So next time you want to check
Facebook or text a friend, please
take a seat or check your phone
when you get home.

Just a Dream
The Olympic
Opening
Ceremonies 2014
By Marianne Labrie
February 7th, Russia held the
opening ceremony for the 2014
winter Olympics. The ceremony
starts with a very nice graphic
beginning. It was a girl dreaming
and they used all the letters of
their
alphabet
to
name
something important to Russia.
(Did you know, French is the
official Olympic language)
The ceremony continues with a
little parade of different climates
and regions in Russia. After a
while, the Russian national
anthem detonates in the stadium
as they get the flag up on the
post. Afterwards, they play a
video of the Olympic torch’s
road to the stadium. A path
appears in the middle of the
stadium and it is the entry on
the
athletes.
Countries:
Afghanistan, Albania, Andorra,
Argentina, Armenia, Australia,

important things about Russia.
Starting
with
a

reproducing
an
important
chapel,
a quick aspect of
military conflicts. A Ball using
ballet moves, a story of Natasha
Rostava, the revolution and
many more.
This is one of the most boring
but important moments; the
speeches, Vladimir Poutine
announces the opening of the
Olympic Games. It is a tradition
to release doves and to sing of
peace. This year, instead of
releasing real doves; they got
dancers to dance along to the
Swan Lake song.
As soon as they finish the
dance, the Olympic flame
arrives; the tennis player Mariya
Sharapova was the one entering
the stadium. Afterwards she
gave it to Elena Isinbayeva who
gave it to Aleksandr Karelin that
passed it to Alina Kabaeva. The
four of them did one tour of the
stadium and gave the flame to
Vladislav Tretyak and Irinia
Rodnina who lighted the
cauldron.
The ceremony end with the
most obvious of choice, loads
of fireworks!
