THE LAVENDERS
The new job of lavender was created after
the Apparitions with the development
of hotels.
SAINT-MICHEL BRIDGE
Main entrance to the Sanctuary since
the creation of the direct axis leading
to the train station.

FOUNTAIN OF THE
THREE NOZZLES
The oldest fountain of Lourdes owing its
name to its three nozzles.

MOULIN GRAS
After the dungeon, Moulin Gras is the
dwelling place for the Soubirous family
after the Apparitions.

MOULIN DE BOLY
Bernadette Soubirous was born in Moulin
de Boly on January 7, 1844. She lived
there all her childhood until the age of 10.
ABBOT
PEYRAMALE’S
PRESBYTERY
Presbytery where Bernadette came
to report the Apparitions to Abbot
Peyramale in 1858.

PATERNAL HOUSE
Formerly “rue des Moulins”.
Five watermills had been occupied
by the Soubirous family, particularly
Moulin de Boly, the Maison Paternelle
and Moulin Gras.

Population
who lived in isolated areas and
worked only in wood related activities.
ANCIENT HOSPICE
Hospice in which Bernadette attended
classes between 1858 and 1866 prior
to leaving for Nevers.
LOURDES TRAIN
STATION
Inaugurated on March 9, 1866 the train
station allowed for the development
of pilgrimages in Lourdes.

SQUARE – ARRIEUX
BRIDGE
The Arrieux Bridge allowed to cross
the Lapacca River, flowing underground
at present. The Lapacca square became
Jeanne d’Arc square after her beatification
in 1909.

These stations are outside the itinerary, they are situated in the
circuits periphery. You will find them on the touristic map at the
Tourist Office.
Inaugurated in June of 1900, it is the second
funicular devoted to tourism in France.
59 Avenue Francis Lagardère - Located to the
South of the town, in the direction of Argelès-Gazost
SOUM CASTLE
Built by the architect of Lourdes Jean-Marie Lacrampe
for the Fourneau family in the 1900s-1901s, it was
the seat of the civil court until 2010.
Rue Edmond Michelet
TOWN HALL
This old private mansion hosts Lourdes town hall
since 1941.

COVERED MARKET
Covered market of the Toulouse style inspired by Baltard,
repurchased in 1892 by the city of Lourdes.
BAPTISMAL BASINS
Roman baptismal basins located in
the origin into Saint-Pierre church,
over which Bernadette Soubirous
was baptised in 1844.
Place du Champ Commun
CHURCH OF SAUX
This church dating from the 12th and 13th centuries was
modified in the 17th century to give it its present features.
DUNGEON
Ancient dungeon of the city where had
lived Bernadette and her family during
the Apparitions.
CEMETERY OF EQUALITY
Transferred to this street in 1800,
numerous personalities related to Lourdes
(among whom the Soubirous family)
are buried there.
Hameau de Saux - Located to the North of the town,
in the direction of Tarbes

CHURCH OF ANCLADES
Detached from the Sarsan parish, the Anclades village has its own Roman
church of from the 12th century, modified in the 17th century.

Hameau d’Anclades - Located at the East of the town,
in the direction of Bagnères-de-Bigorre
PONT-VIEUX
Historic itinerary taken by Bernadette
to go to the Grotto.
SAINT-JOSEPH GATE
Access leading to the Sanctuary, taken
on February 11, 1858 by Bernadette to
go to the Massabielle Grotto where took
place the eighteen Apparitions
of Virgin Mary.

LAKE OF LOURDES
Low altitude glacial lake (422m) formed by water accumulation
behind the moraine of the former Argelès glacier, it is part
of Natura 2000 network. Gathering point at the interpretation boards
of the lake peat land.

The “cagots”, a population who lived
in an isolated part of town, had its
own chapel, Saint-Jean Chapel.

BAÜS TOWER
Church of the 11th century destroyed
in 1904/1907.

A ncient tower and gate destroyed to
make easier the passage of pilgrims
in carriages.

BONNETTE TOWER
Built on a small cliff, it defended
the southwest corner of the first
fortification row of the medieval city.

RUE ET CHAUSSÉE
DU BOURG
The « rue du Bourg », or « rue Noble »,
was the main street of the city.
Some mansions of the 17th or 18th
centuries are still visible.

D’EMBARRÈRE GATE
– CASTLE RAMP
Ancient gate tower situated at the
horse entrance of the fortified castle,
destroyed in 1810.
FORTIFIED CASTLE
Medieval construction that was used
primarily as a defensive place then
as a State prison. The fortified castle
hosts today the Musée Pyrénéen.
SACRÉ-CŒUR
PARISH CHURCH
Church built between 1875 and
1936 in substitution of the old
Saint-Pierre church, and keeping
the baptismal basins over which
Bernadette was baptised.
GARNAVIE TOWER
F ormerly the Guigne tower, this
tower was renovated in 1994
and holds the name of the part of
town where it stands. It is one
of the major vestiges of the medieval
city of Lourdes.

bottom of the castle, used as
