WHAT’S UP DUCK?
The 22nd Annual Tri-Cities Ducks For Bucks Benefit
Race that’s what’s up! Don’t duck the opportunity to sponsor an
“a-quack-tic” athlete. Race day is Saturday, April 23 at Lake Elizabeth.
GREAT GRAND PRIZE:
For every 500 ducks in the race there
will be a winner for the car. If one of these comes
in first the adopter wins the car. Otherwise
the adopter will win the GRAND PRIZE
of $2,000 in CASH!
Other fantastic prizes include: a Wellness Package, a Living Trust
Package a Diamond Necklace , and seven other great prizes, see the
form on the next page. But what everyone will be waiting for is the
GREAT RACE itself when thousands of little rubber duckies will be
set free to float their way to the finish line. Each duck “athlete” has
an adopter/sponsor, and you want to be sure you have at least one in
the race. As ducks race to the finish line, sponsors will “feather their
nests” with those terrific prizes and all the proceeds benefit great
programs. Sponsorship is only $5 per duck and for every 5 ducks
you adopt at one time, you get the 6th duck FREE! LOV’s duck
sponsors will be supporting our free Summer Recreation & Lunch
program for the children of Fremont, Newark & Union City. You
don’t have to be present to win those great prizes. However, come
and enjoy the day at Lake Elizabeth. There are super drawing prizes,
a free kids carnival, food and fun for the whole family.
Send in the sponsorship form on the next page or go to our website at
www.lov.org and race a rubber ducky, or better yet, a flock of rubber
duckies for a quack at some of those big prizes, including the chance
to drive away with a brand new car!

TINY TICKETS These are what we call leftover BART tickets,
and they are about to go away with the issuance of the new “Clipper
Card”. However, if you have any, you can help LOV and our many
programs with this way to raise funds. BART will give us the value of
every card we turn in. Please send them to LOV at 8440 Central Ave.,
Suite A/B, Newark, CA. 94560 or drop them off at our center. BART
has made it possible for nonprofits to turn these in for the cash value
on the tickets. So don’t throw those “tiny tickets”

DOUBLETREE by HILTON SITE OF
A TRULY ELEGANT AFFAIRE
CELEBRATING VALENTINE’S DAY
AND HONORING RETIRING JUDGE RICHARD KELLER
The Grand Ballroom of the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Newark was again the site of this the 25th annual An Elegant Affaire benefiting LOV’s
Arts in Schools Program which provided 11,675 children with 41 assemblies in 15 schools in Fremont, Newark and Union City last school
year. However, this year was very special as LOV honored and said thanks to Judge Keller who is a long time supporter of LOV, serving the
community in the Municipal Court from 1996-2002, the Superior Court from 2002 to his retirement this year and a long time Board Trustee for
Ohlone College from 1975-1996. He was also active with the Mission Peak District Boy Scouts of America and many other organizations. It was
a beautiful evening, with delicous food and fantastic prizes.
Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, our silent, live and on-line auction donors, the fantastic food, dedicated volunteers and generous dinner guests,
we netted over $25,000 for the “Arts in Schools” program, Guests were seated at tables with a beautiful centerpiece thanks to Dirk Lorenz of
Fremont Flowers. White Crane Winery champagne flowed at the reception honorary Judge Keller. Always popular was beer tasting thanks to
Das Brew of Fremont. The guests enjoyed an array of wonderful hors d’oeurves from the culinary talents of Gael Stewart of Mission Coffee
while listening to the beautiful Mexican harp music of Salvador Vazquez. The four course gourmet meal our servers placed before the guests
was 5-star thanks to the talents of Executive Chef Ritz Libaste and wine poured all night during each course.
Our super MC, Rick Geha, kept the evening lively and fun and auctioned off some great prizes that were donated to us. Without a lot of pressure,
Rick was able to get some generous bids during the live auction and for pledges for what we call ‘Funding a Need” which raised additional support
for our Arts in Schools program .Some of the fantastic auction prizes were: a deluxe box at an A’s game donated by Alameda County Supervisor
Richard Valle, 4 passes to Disneyland Park and California Adventure thanks to Walt Disney Company, a Golden State Warriors autographed
ball by The Splash Brothers Klay Thompson & Stephen Curry and a week in a luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas thanks to LOV’s Executive
Director, Shirley Sisk. Many thanks to Executive Chef Ritz Libaste and our musician Salvador Vazquez who put themselves up for auction
and helped raise money for our program.

RE-GIFTING AN EASY WAY TO SUPPORT
LOV IS A PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATION
IN S.H.A.R.E.S
We all have received gift cards to restaurants and stores that are wellintentioned but something we will probably never use. Why not donate
them to LOV? We will use them to raise money through our events that
help support our programs, such as: Arts in Schools, Summer Recreation,
Thanksgiving Day Meal, Holiday Toy Drive and Adopt-a-Family. You
will receive a donation letter and know that your re-gifting has become
a gift to make a difference in the community. Just send them to us at
8440 Central Ave. Suite A/B, Newark, CA 94560
S.H.A.R.E.S. stands for Supporting Humanities, Arts, Recreation,
Education & Sports. You can now help LOV raise funds for our many
programs by simply swiping a card if you shop at Lucky, Save Mart,
Food Maxx or Smart Foods. It costs you nothing. Just ask us for a
card, and every time you make a qualified purchase at any one of these
stores, swipe your card at check out. Each time the card is used, 3% of
the qualified purchase earns a S.H.A.R.E.S. point. Each point equals
$1 earned. You can even see on your register receipt the amount of
points earned and credited to LOV. LOV will then receive a check every
quarter reflecting the accumulated amount earned. What a simple way
to support LOV when you do your weekly shopping! Just contact us
and we’ll get you a card 510-793-5683 or e-mail [email protected] and be
sure we have your mailing address.
THANK YOU

THE ROAD TO GEORGIA
LOV’S ANGEL FUND IS RENEWED & REVIVED
How many of us have wished that the spirit of the Holidays could last throughout the year? With the growing success of our Holiday Adopt-aFamily program, we’ve been getting asked more and more how can we bring this program to help families in need year-round? That spirit of
the Angel Fund was renewed and revived when the day before Thanksgiving a homeless family of 5 came to our office looking for food. They
were not the usual family. The youngest daughter suffers from a debilitating medical condition, called Williams Syndrome, affecting lifelong
cardiovascular health, neurological development, and more. Their homeless situation was truly dangerous and frightening. The GOOD news was
the family had family, help, support, doctors and more, waiting for them at their original home in Rome, Georgia. The problem was, how could
they get there? We decided to put our LOV Angel Fund to work, to see if we could help get this family “Back
to Georgia.”
We received a call from Emily Iwata, a teacher at Fremont’s Mission San Jose Elementary School, Her third grade class wanted to adopt a family
for the holidays, Sharon Slayton, our Program/Deveopment Director in charge of the Adopt-a-Family program told Ms Iwata about the family.
What happened next was pretty amazing! The students, with the approval of their parents, made it their goal to help this family . Students earned
donations doing home chores - from putting out the trash, to reading a story to a sibling to giving their mother a foot massage. Together, they
turned their wishes to help someone in need, into a class project of giving, collecting more than $1,400.00 in cash, gift cards, gifts and more.
Inspired by the actions and the caring of these students and teachers, Abode Services, local businesses, and several generous members of our
community came together through the Angel Fund and made it possible for this family to “Get Back to Georgia.”
On Wednesday, February 23rd, the sponsors and students were all invited to meet the family at a special assembly. It was an extraordinary morning
for everyone. Attending were Dr. James Morris, - Superintendent, Brian Killgore - FUSD Public Information Officer, Chuck Graves - Principal,
Emily Iwata, the teachers and students of third grade rooms 9, 10 and 11, and Monica McCathrion, - Housing Services Coordinator at Abode
Services.
The family departed on their way on March 5th. As of this writing, we are awaiting the news of their final and safe arrival in Rome. We have
contacted the local Kiwanis Club who are working within their community to gather job leads, community programs and services that the family
will need once they’ve arrived and settled in. We’ve asked the family to keep in touch and we’ll be sharing future updates on their progress over
the year.
All of the family members join us in thanking all those who participated and helped reach our Back to Georgia campaign goal, including:
Al & Marsha Badella , Shanthika Sukumar , Christina Gendreau, Raymond & Gaetana Arito, Kathleen Schuler, Sharran Rodd , Sandra
Barclay, Jason Blair - Director of Housing Programs at Abode Services and Chris La, Automotive Service & Repair. This will not be the
last project for The Angel Fund. When a special need comes to us we hope to continue what we have started,

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES JIMMY
Last month the Bay Area and beyond lost a great man Jimmy Davenport
San Francisco Giants third baseman for 13 years , Golden Glove winner
and later working in various roles: scout, coach, minor league instructor,
big league manager and special assistant for player development. However,
for LOV he was the Honorary Chair since 2003 for our annual golf
tournament, donating every year many autographed baseballs of
Giant’s greats for our auctions and having fun playing golf with his
buddies . Jimmy we will never forget that wonderful smile.
You will always be with us in spirit every June.
