Range of industry groups asks U.S. to
reject IATA’s New Distribution Capability
WASHINGTON — Despite attempts by
IATA to paint critics of its New Distribution Capability (NDC) as spreading
myths and misinformation, a range of
industry associations filed objections
with the U.S. Department of Transpor-
tation over IATA’s application before
DOT for approval of NDC.

managers, travel management companies and industry associations including the Association of Canadian Travel

Resolution 787 sets out a goal to
develop the technology so that airlines could sell fares and all ancillaries
through third parties.
But even some organizations that
generally support that effort are concerned by the lack of detail IATA provides on how it will work and there
are fears that it will make comparison
shopping more difficult and force consumers to divulge a great deal of personal information before getting access to a carrier’s prices.
“NDC represents a new, worldwide
business model for the pricing and sale
of airline tickets that could structurally change the industry in unalterable
ways adversely impacting all supplychain participants, including the end
customer. The ‘authenticated shopping’
scheme represents IATA members’ aspirations for unchecked pricing power
through an unprecedented invasion of
privacy that would enable participating airlines to pinpoint with precision
and charge higher prices to those trav-

Porter Airlines and

content agreement
TORONTO — Travelport has signed
a new multi-year full content agreement with Porter Airlines, giving all

access to the airline’s full published
fares and inventory, including access
to the airline’s lowest web fares.
Through the agreement, all of Porter’s published fares and inventory will

and allows agents to offer a higher level
of service to their travellers.
“We are delighted to have signed

and to be able to give Travelportconnected travel agency customers
access to Porter Airlines’ full inventory, including their lowest web

when booking Porter Airlines, which
is a key carrier for our Eastern North

+5.1% through the end of March, according to data released by Pegasus
Solutions in The Pegasus View.
As first quarter volumes in the business and leisure sectors climbed past
2012 levels, rates also delivered, rising
+1.7% in the corporate market and
+1.4% for leisure.
Leisure travel bookings grew over
prior year in general, helped by an
early Easter holiday, and despite a
shorter February. March volumes
increased +5.9% over last year globally as rates grew +0.5% for the
month. Length of stay and booking
lead times were either on par with
or gaining on prior year worldwide,
indicating a promising consumer
trend towards more international
and long-haul travel.
“The stabilizing or improved performance evident in leisure market
indicators suggests hotels should
emerge from daily survival mode
to actually focus on the future,” said
David Millili, chief executive officer
of Pegasus Solutions. “When volume
grows with rates, it means hotels
aren’t pandering to win bookings by
discounting. Instead, they are implementing and maintaining solid rate
strategies with an eye to the future,
making sure they are both available
and bookable to seize a portion of
growing demand.”
Corporate travellers booked +2.4%
more reservations globally during
the first quarter of 2013 than last
year, staying within -0.3% of prior
year in March. Rates for the channel
also sustained, increasing by +1.7%
for the quarter, and still growing
slightly in March by +0.6%. Again,
average length of stay and reservation lead times exhibited marginal
increases overall, which have held

Sandals® Loves
Alana Halford-Bowles
Loves Sandals Grande St. Lucian
After selling many Sandals vacations, I was
excited to finally experience Sandals for
myself and chose Sandals Grande St. Lucian.
It was far more relaxing and romantic than I
had expected.
Saint Lucia is such a beautiful island and
we spent time thoroughly exploring it from
one end to the other. Back at the resort
we enjoyed the spectacular views and our
ground floor walkout room close to a quiet
pool, when we weren’t sipping a drink
seated at a firepit under the stars.
One night the resort treated us to dinner at
Gordon’s on the Pier, usually reserved for
butler guests only. The food, presentation
and white-glove service were out of this
world. It seemed impossible to try all of the
many dining choices offered. We found
Dino’s Pizzeria and Josephine’s Crêperie
perfect for more casual dining and took
advantage of the room service menu too.
I would certainly recommend this resort
to my clients. It’s easy to get around for
my older clients, and has tons of little
romantic spots to get away as a couple,
especially for honeymooners of all ages!
I’d also recommend the addition of a
helicopter transfer to and from Hewanorra
International Airport. Again, the views
are spectacular and the trip is more like a
sightseeing tour than a transfer.

Sunwing launches
new STAR program
for agents
TORONTO — Sunwing is launching its new agent rewards program
— STAR (Sunwing Travel Agent Rewards).
The incentive program, which replaces the operator’s current offerings under the IMAGINE program,
allows agents to earn STAR Reward
Points that convert to cash when
making qualifying bookings with
Sunwing Vacations.
Points will be earned upon final
payment of qualifying bookings
and will then be transferred to the
agent’s individual STAR account for
redemption. Bonus reward points
will be offered during special promotions, allowing agents to earn points
more quickly.
As of May 1, 2013 agents who currently earn IMAGINE reward points
will automatically be entered into the
STAR program database. All agents,
including those who do not have an
IMAGINE account and would like to
be part of the STAR program, must
register at the operator’s new agentdedicated website, sunwingagents.ca,
to activate their account. Once registered, agents will receive a STAR
Prepaid VISA Card, which will allow
them to withdraw cash at ATM machines or make purchases at millions
of merchant locations.
Agents will be able to manage
their profile, check point balance,
view transaction status and view the
cash balance on their card through
sunwingagents.ca.

Sunwing has developed a unique and
exclusive Instant Group Quotes (IGQ)
application available in both English
and French.
The IGQ application allows users
to source their own group price quote
instantly, saving time and assisting
agents in closing the sale more quickly
and efficiently with their clients. Simple quotes can be accessed any time
at the agent’s convenience and in less
than a minute and will include all the
information normally provided, including quote validity, group concessions, group promotions and terms
and conditions.
The IGQ prices provided would
be the same quotes given by Groups
Sales Representatives, however, the
application will make it much more
convenient for agents looking to get
the same rates without the wait. Users will also have the option to e-mail
or print quotes as well as review their
own quote history within the IGQ application.
Instant Group Quotes is located
within Sunwing’s new travel agent
website sunwingagents.ca, which
can be accessed through both the
sunwing.ca and signature.ca websites.
Agents must register to obtain an account and individual log-in, which
will be password protected.

Friday Five with Bill Motley from Golfstream Travel
Over the past few weeks, Travelweek magazine spoke with Bill Motley
about his latest endeavour, Golfstream Travel. With this long winter, the golf
season has never been more closely anticipated. We sat down with Bill and
asked him to tell us what exactly he’s been up to for the last year.
My perfect day in New Zealand
Perfect days are hard to come by while travelling abroad. I’ve certainly had my
fair share of bumps and bruises throughout my travels, everything from food
poisoning and cancelled flights to flooded roads and impromptu sand storms.
Something always seems to go wrong at one point or another, which is why
when everything does go smoothly, it deserves to be celebrated.

HAWAII’S SPRING OFFERINGS

Summer’s fast approach makes it a
great time to explore the islands of
Hawaii and all they have to offer.
OAHU
One of the most exciting recent developments on Oahu was the opening of Joie De Vivre Hotels’ new
Shoreline Waikiki. Formerly the
Seaside Hotel Waikiki, Joie de Vivre
relaunched it as a new hotel after a
major renovation.
The 135-room resort is just steps
away from Waikiki Beach but is also a
private oasis away from the bustle of
the crowds along Kalakaua Avenue.
Inspired by iconic 1970’s modernist
architecture with accents of warm
tangerine and aquamarine sea foam
that invoke an Art Deco palette, the
hotel’s aesthetic takes visitors back
to Waikiki’s golden age while native
flora and fauna bring the beauty of
Hawaii’s natural setting into the hotel.
As guests enter the expansive
open-air lobby, they are greeted with

a floral lei and escorted to the customfurnished rooms with decorations by
local artists. Guestrooms feature signature Joie de Vivre touches including free WiFi, flatscreen televisions,
mini kitchens including refrigerators
and microwaves and private balconies from which guests can soak up
views of the city and the Pacific. The
hotel’s top floors include four suites
The hotel is also offering a ‘Sea or
Sky Daredevil’ package that includes
deluxe accommodations, a sky-diving or shark-diving adventure for
two, t-shirts or beach towels for two
and aloe sunblock starting at $679
with a one-night minimum.
For more information or to
book, call (855) 931-2444 or visit

US$195, but there is a special introductory rate of $159 per night bookable until May 31, 2013, good for
travel through the end of the year.

association. For more information visit

Kaanapali Beach Hotel takes cultural

Ke Kula O Ka Pookela (School of

program immerses all of Kaanapali
Beach Hotel’s employees in Hawaiian history and traditions and has

Together with Kaanapali Beach Hotel’s other cultural programs, guests

NEW OPEN-AIR DOUBLE

HAWAII/POLYNESIAN
ADVENTURE TOURS
Gray Line Hawaii/Polynesian Adventure Tours, Hawaii’s largest tour
company, has announced three
new Oahu tours on its fleet of seven
open-air, double-decker tour buses,
beginning May 10. The tour operator has also announced it will phase
out its existing AlohaBus tours as it
transitions the current buses to Gray
Line Hawaii branded double-decker
tour buses.
“The new tours on our open-air
double-decker buses will better enhance the island tour experience for
the hundreds of thousands of customers and visitors to Hawaii that
we serve every year,” said Brandon
Briggs, managing director, Gray Line
Hawaii/Polynesian Adventure Tours.
“Visitors to our islands want to see
more of what we have to offer, and
these three new tours will take them
to many of Oahu’s most treasured
landmarks and historic places.”
Holders of current AlohaBus
passes will be able to use them for
Gray Line Hawaii double-decker bus
tours until Dec. 31. All reservations
booked on AlohaBus prior to April 26

and Sandy Beach to Makapuu. On
clear days, the islands of Molokai,
Lanai and even Maui are visible atop
the double-decker buses. Leaving
from Waikiki at 10:30 a.m. daily, this
tour takes riders past the historic
Diamond Head Crater, through Kahala and out to Hanauma Bay with
a lunch stop at Sea Life Park before
returning back to Waikiki. An upgraded package is also available for
visitors who want to pet, feed and

Mother’s Day is May 12 but with Insight Vacations the celebrations last
all month long. The company is offering savings of $200 per couple on
air to Europe, Britain and the Eastern
Med when land and air is booked with
Insight during the month of May, for
travel by Oct. 31.
“Mother’s Day is a wonderful excuse
for anyone to show that special woman in their life how much she is truly
appreciated, and what better way to do
that than by taking her on a journey of
a lifetime?” says Cris David, President
Car Rentals
of Insight Vacations Canada.
“Each itinerary offers so many utterly spectacular moments and with
this being the year of Ireland’s The
Gathering and Edinburgh’s famed
Military Tattoo approaching, there
really isn’t a better time to visit these
destinations, plus for just one more
week, travellers can take advantage of
5% saving on 2013 Europe and Britain
summer itineraries.”
One of the highlights of Insight’s
nine-day Irish Elegance is a two and
a half hour journey along the wooded paths and lakeshore trails through
the Ring of Kerry, led by an expert
guide. Guests will also join their
captain, a local historian, on an exclusive cruise upon the serene waters
of Lough Corrib, with views of the
Connemara Mountains. And a special Highlight Celebration Dinner
takes guests to the pristine grounds
of lavish Ashford Castle.
Meanwhile, Insight’s 15-day Elegance of Great Britain showcases
Britain’s spring in all its glory, from
the lovely gardens and drawbridge
at Hever Castle, where Henry VIII
courted Anne Boleyn, to Edinburgh’s
Botanical Gardens, a haven of peace
with good views of the castle and Arthurs Seat, to Sudeley Castle’s unique
gardens which are amongst the finest
in England.

Globus adds another
Great Canadian War
Memorial departure
Thanks to strong sales Globus has added a fourth departure of its Great Canadian War Memorial Tour of Europe.
This additional tour departs Paris
Oct. 1 and wraps up in London on
Oct. 11.
These tours are perfect for history
buffs as well as veterans’ families, and
are promoted as ‘designed by Canadians, for Canadians’ to pay tribute to all
who have served our country in the
Great War and World War II.
The 11-day tour, to England and
France, takes in many museums, memorials and special sites that com-
memorate Canadians’ war contributions, including the impressive and
inspiring Canadian Memorial at Vimy
Ridge and the Canadian Cemeteries in Reviers and Dieppe, as well as
the Newfoundland Memorial Park at
Beaumont Hamel.
Other destinations include the
Landing Beaches of Normandy, the
Juno Beach Memorial Centre, Amiens
and Ypres in Belgium.
The group crosses the Channel by
ferry and in London takes in the Imperial War Museum, the Canadian
Memorial in Green Park and the Cabinet War Rooms.
“This is the fifth year we have offered
this tour, in response to our clients’ requests to experience first-hand some of
the sites where Canadians gave so much
to change world history,” says Stéphanie
Bishop, managing director in Canada
for the Globus family of brands.
“We’ve found it appeals not only to
history buffs but also to Canadians
who grew up hearing tales of war from
their parents and grandparents.” Over
one million Canadians served with the
British Forces in World War II alone.
The tour includes first class accommodation and transportation in
air-conditioned motorcoaches, daily
breakfasts and five dinners as well as
all admission fees and the services of
an expert tour director.
The price is $2,899 per person, ex-
cluding airfare, and anyone who has
travelled with Globus or its sister companies Cosmos, Monograms or Avalon
Waterways is eligible for a 5% discount.

SPOTLIGHT BUSINESS TRAVEL
Clients can take advantage of Plus fare
seats with WestJet
by Kathryn Folliott
With affordable fares, a comprehensive and reliable schedule, a modern
fleet of aircraft (average age six to
seven years), and enhanced amenities,
WestJet “knows what providing great
value is all about.”
The airline’s new products, relevant
for both business and leisure guests,
include the full reconfiguration of all
of its 737 aircraft.
Clients can now enjoy four extra
inches of legroom when selecting
a seat in the first three rows. These
rows, as well as the exit rows, will be
offered as Plus fare seats to guests
who opt to purchase a Plus fare bundle with WestJet.
Guests sitting in Plus fare seats
will also get advanced boarding,
first access to overhead bin space
and extra legroom.
Plus fare complimentary seat selection is available at time of booking and during check-in (based on
availability).
Spotlight_May9_BusinessTravel.indd 29
As Plus fare seats are not automatically assigned to those who book a
Plus fare bundle, it is encouraged to
secure your clients a Plus fare seat at
the time of booking.
WestJet will also be making the
seats in the first three rows, as well as
the exit rows, available to guests who
purchase Econo or Flex bundles when
available during their 24-hour checkin period for an additional $45 per
segment plus applicable taxes.
Designed to provide flexibility to
each guest, this option is offered for
guests who prefer the comfort of extra legroom, but don’t require the additional flexibility that comes with the
Plus fare bundle.
WestJet’s airport kiosks will be updated so guests will have the option to
select a Plus fare seat if available when
they check in at the airport, online or
with a CSA.
WestJet will continue to add features to the fare bundles product so be
sure to stay tuned for future updates.

Westin launches
‘Tangent’ workspace

worldwide
Westin Hotels & Resorts has announced the beginning of the global
roll-out of its new Tangent concept to
more than 40 hotels around the world,
offering business travellers a “highly
functional, technology driven flexible
space”, says the brand.
The Tangent model has received
“rave reviews and high usage” from
both guests and neighbouring businesses in pilot hotel locations. Tangent is currently available at The Westin Boston Waterfront, The Westin
Arlington Gateway Hotel and recently
made its debut at The Westin Grand
Munich. The offering will continue to
roll out to more than 40 hotels worldwide this year including The Westin
Resort Nusa Dua, Bali and The Westin
Copley Place, Boston.
“In our efforts to meet the needs
of today’s mobile traveller, we are
changing the way we do business to
better customize the guest experience. While a hotel room or lobby is
a place where you can do work, Tangent was specifically designed as a
smart room and personalized work
space that enhances productivity and
can be booked on demand,” said Brian Povinelli, Global Brand Leader for
Westin Hotels. In the U.S., 75% of the workforce
is mobile and by the end of this year
one-third of the global workforce will
follow suit, says the company.
The Tangent workspace is ideal for
small impromptu meetings and can be
booked by the hour, at a moment’s notice. Signature new workspace features

Global Travel
Acquisitions launches
new support services
for travel agencies
TORONTO — Global Travel Acquisitions (GTA) is expanding the services
it offers to the travel industry. Operating since 2008 GTA has successfully
facilitated numerous acquisitions and
mergers on behalf of both sellers and
buyers.
While the company will continue
to facilitate and play an advisory role
on mergers and acquisitions the exGTA President John Kennedy
panded support services will include
advisory, consulting and management
support that will focus on sales, marketing, operations, finance and technology. GTA said it is now positioned
to advise and provide support with the
challenges travel agencies deal with on
a regular basis such as business development, customer loyalty, financial
management, marketing, staff performance, strategic planning and overall
business performance improvement.
“We are very pleased with our performance to date in assisting agencies through the process of selling
or merging however we have come
across too many companies who although they have made the decision
to sell or merge are simply not attractive due to negative operational, financial and sales performance,” said Larry
Finn, CEO of GTA.
“We are confident that the experience, expertise and skill set we offer
will help travel agencies identify their
strengths and weaknesses, adapt to
the changing industry and improve
their market performance and bottom
line results. This in turn will make the
company more attractive and valuable to potential buyers when the time
comes to sell,” added GTA President
John Kennedy.
Kennedy continued, “Our observation is that over the last few years,
companies in the mid-size range have
either grown into significantly larger
entities or have had their revenue
volumes shrink to the point where
maintaining profitability has become
a major issue. Our expanded services
are designed to help companies that
are struggling to get back to profitability. Often when a new set of eyes are
viewing and analyzing a company’s
performance, weaknesses can be identified quickly and a corrective course
of action can be implemented before
it’s too late.
“We recognize that many small and
mid-size companies are struggling
and it is our hope that through our
expanded services we can help companies turn things around.
“Our goal is to utilize our experience and expertise to provide support and direction to assist owners in
developing short and long term goals
and execute strategies and initiatives
to be more successful, profitable and
ultimately more valuable”.

More than 8,000
agents have
completed Jamaica
specialist program
by Michael McCreesh
MONTEGO BAY — Seen as the largest travel trade event in Jamaica, JAPEX ’13 kicked off last week at the new
Montego Bay Convention Centre.
During Monday’s media breakfast,
minister of tourism, Dr. Wykeham
McNeil, director of the Jamaican
Tourist Board John Lynch and president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, Evelyn Smith, spoke
about initiatives currently underway
and those planned for the near future.
There were strong messages from
all speakers on the importance of the
travel trade community. “You may be
aware, but it is worth repeating that
our travel agent community continues
to play a major role in selling the destination, and is integral to our marketing efforts,” said Lynch. He went on to
discuss the role agents play and how
Jamaica is actively investing in programs and tools to help travel agents
more effectively present Jamaica to
their clients.
Launched in February 2012, the Jamaican Travel Specialist – A One-Love
Rewards Program, has seen over 8,000
agents complete the program worldwide. To gain a better understanding
of how effective these online learning programs are in preparing agents,
the tourist board surveyed those who
took part in the program. The results
of this survey indicated that over 98%
said it gave them a better understanding of Jamaica’s unique selling points.
Since the introduction of the course,
Jamaica has seen an average 7% conversion rate for 2012.
The minister of tourism discussed
the role that sports tourism will play

in the diversification of Jamaica’s tourism products. With the success of its
athletes at the 2012 Summer Olympics
in London, the minister of tourism
hopes that Jamaica can leverage this
brand recognition. The Montego Bay
area is being positioned as Jamaica’s
sport and wellness centre.
Looking to continue developing the
product offering found on the island,
the Jamaican government provided an
update on the Casino Gaming Act, a
national bill previously passed by parliament in 2010. On June 1, Jamaica
will begin accepting bids for the development of ‘integrated resorts’ aka
casino properties. There is believed to
be upwards of six applicants prepared
to table their proposals for casino resort properties.
There was no mention of preferred
locations or other specifications.
Other topics discussed related to
the event calendar for the remainder
of 2013, including the world’s largest
reggae festival, Reggae Sumfest (July
25-27), the Jamaica Bridal Expo (Oct.
