The Helping Hand - Chesterfield County Public Schools
The Helping Hand Summer Camp Guide 2012 Developed by Chesterfield DMHSS ID Service Coordination Department Meredith Fischer [email protected] Summer Camp can provide opportunity for individuals with special needs to interact with peers, form friendships and develop new recreation and social skills as well as provide caregivers a reprieve. When it comes to camps, individuals with special needs have many choices. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires all camps to make reasonable accommodations (such as the installation of wheelchair-accessible ramps) so individuals with special needs can attend. So, camps that have never had a child with special needs attend before may now be on your list of possibilities. Inclusion Camps provide individuals with special needs opportunity to attend camp with typical peers. These camps may have started out serving only the general population of kids, but they have gradually changed as the needs of the families they serve have changed. Inquire whether special accommodations can be made, supports added, or inclusion peers or adult coaches made available to provide assistance. There are also camps designed specifically for individuals with special needs. Many of these camps are designed for kids with a variety of needs, but some camps cater to a specific need such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a particular chronic illness. Specialized camps often offer a lower camper-staff ratio, have staff trained in managing special needs, and can provide a wider array of accommodations. There are day camps and sleepover camps options. Camps generally operate week sessions and some offer option to attend multiple weeks. Separated from their parents, over night camps can allow older campers the opportunity to take on challenges that build their self-confidence and sense of independence. Camp isn’t just for kids. This guide contains many options for young to older adults as well. Many camps already registering and filling up, Sign up soon! Lose the Training Wheels http://www.losethetrainingwheels.org/ Contact: Marty Polk 894-747-4673 [email protected] August 13 - 17, 2012 hosted by Richmond Hope Foundation held at the Weinstein Center at the University of Richmond 28 Westhampton Way Camp Fee: $150 For kids with disabilities, learning to ride a bicycle can be a frightening endeavour. At Lose The Training Wheels camps, children learn to balance, pedal, steer and take off on their own, many in five days or less – a feat parents say is nothing short of miraculous, considering many struggle for years to teach their kids how to ride a two wheel bicycle. When you enroll your child in a Lose The Training Wheels camp, they will be assigned to a 75 minute riding session which they will attend each of the 5 days. During this time they will ride a bicycle that gradually introduces the natural instability of the bike as each child is ready. They will be assigned one or two volunteers who will serve as their “spotters” to provide physical support and encouragement. While all children learn at their own pace, some will be ready to ride on two wheels as soon as the third day of camp, and historically more than 80% of children who attend our camps are able to balance on a bicycle by the end of the five days. The goal of our program is to teach individuals to ride such that they can be independent riders. In other words, they have sufficient riding skills that they can start, ride and stop their bike without any outside assistance. Requirements for participation: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Participant is at least 8 years of age Participant has a disability Participant can walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane Participant is able to side step quickly to both sides Participant is able and willing to wear a properly fitted bike helmet at all times when on a bicycle. Participant has a minimum inseam measurement of 20” when measured from the floor, not the pant leg. Participant does not weigh more than 220 lbs. It is important to consider behavioral issues as you evaluate your child’s suitability for this program. A participant may be physically able to ride a bike, but if their behavior is such that they cannot be persuaded to get on the bike and follow instructions, then it is likely this program will not be beneficial Capernum http://sites.younglife.org/sites/Hanover Young Life Capernaum is an outreach of Young Life to young people with physical and/or mental disabilities.
