1947 –Present
The Beginning
In 1947, Beutler Heating & Air started in the garage of Del Beutler. Del found great
prosperity with the post-war housing boom
by possessing the highly specialized
skills he received in the Navy as a sheet
metal specialist. In Del’s early days, he
concentrated on installing heating and
duct systems for the new tract-homes.

In the first company truck (that had no
reverse gear!) Del would regularly interrupt
the family dinner, pick up his small red tool
box and head over to a neighbors to fix
their system. It was this kind of dedication
and customer service that set him and his
new company apart.
As air-cooled AC systems began to grow
commercially, Del realized that this was the future
and his company quickly began improving the
efficiency of fans, blowers, ducting, vents and
insulation.

The company steadily grew because of Del’s
customer service and innovations. In 1954 he
purchased a larger competitor, Valley Air. As the
1960’s approached, Del’s son Gary was beginning
in the business: cleaning the shop and eventually
working in the field earning his journeyman
status. As the first 20 years of Beutler Heating &
Air concluded, the transition from Del to Gary’s
leadership began.

Late ‘60’s to Mid 80’s
In the later 1960’s, Gary Beutler, the son of Del, began
his transition into the leadership position at Beutler. His
leadership began with his purchase of the company’s
first forklift in 1968 after watching two employees
carrying equipment.

Gary’s career at Beutler began at the age of 16, cutting
asbestos and cleaning up the shop of Don Way. In
1960, he began his apprenticeship and became a
Journeyman in 1964 earning $1.63 per hour. Gary
worked in the field for a few years, but an injury
sent him into the office to work as an estimator. He
quickly found that his gift was in sales and creating
relationships with builders and employees.
Mentored by field boss Bob Hill, Gary’s skills earned the company
its largest client at the time, RC Powell with a contract of 300 homes. Because most
existing homes at the time did not have air conditioning, Gary directed efforts to
capture “add-on” sales and with that he opened Beutler’s first retail location next to the
new shop on Robertson Avenue. “Air Care” opened in 1971 and sold air conditioning
products from every manufacturer and even sold used equipment.
The growth of the company began to ramp up significantly in the mid 1970’s and in
1975, the company relocated to Gold River Drive in Rancho Cordova. During this time,
the company ranks swelled for the first time to over 100 employees and the economy
was heating up along with them.
1976 welcomed a new warehouse employee, Rick Wylie. In 1981, an economic
recession hit hard and that forced many changes, including laying off the then new
journeyman, Rick Wylie. Six months later, Rick rejoined Beutler as an estimator and,
as usual, business picked back up. Rick was now in the right position with the right
combination of skills to be promoted to Vice President in 1984. Beutler’s growth and
expansion continued with the opening of the first satellite plant in Fairfield in 1985.
The later half of the 1980’s began the new
transition of leadership from Gary Beutler to
newly appointed President, Rick Wylie in 1986.
