Mike Bailey of Allen and
Michelle Secours of Huntsville
won the Texas Masters and
Bluebonnet Queens at Cityview
Lanes in Ft. Worth respectively,
last weekend.
This was the first title for
both in this prestigious and
long-running event. The men
had 173 entries and the women
had 69 entries.
Bailey, 45, used two 300
games in the round-robin finals
to vault himself to the title,
“The Storm Hy-Road Pearl
matched up really well on this
surface and oil pattern and allowed me to create a little bit of
push down the lane that saved
me on a couple of occasions,”
he said.
Bailey had a 66 pin lead
over Tyler Jensen heading into
the position round game, and
never let his foot off the gas,
finishing with a 116 pin victory
over second place finisher,
Steve Weber of San Antonio.
Bailey said that he used the
same mind-set and strategy going into that last game, “there’s
no defense in bowling,” he
added.
Bailey is a long-time PBA
member with the three PBA
Regional titles to his credit.
“The field was so strong, you

Malott Helps Duke Win 38th Title in
Roth/Holman PBA Doubles Championship
PBA’s “odd couple” successfully defends 2011 title; Duke moves into third
place on all-time PBA Tour titles list
(l-r) Wes Malott, Marshall Holman, Mark Roth and Norm Duke
INDIANAPOLIS – Professional Bowlers Association
Hall of Famer Norm Duke of
Clermont, Fla., with the help of
partner Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, successfully
defended their Mark Roth/
Marshall Holman PBA Doubles
Championship at Woodland
Bowl, giving Duke his 38th
career title and sole possession
of third place on the all-time
PBA titles list.
The doubles event aired
Sunday on ESPN with the
hall of fame namesakes in the
crowd, watching the action.
Duke, who stands 5-foot6 and weighs 128 pounds,
teamed up with Malott, at
6-foot-4, 250 pounds, to defeat
international stars Dom Barrett
of England and Osku Palermaa
of Finland, 228-203, for a
victory that also gave Malott
10 career titles and eligibility
for future PBA Hall of Fame
consideration.
The 2011 Roth-Holman
Doubles champions entered
the finals as top qualifiers, and
they bowled a game that was
four single-pin spares away
from perfection despite their
contrasting physiques and
bowling styles. Duke played
a relatively straight line up
the outside of the right lane,
leaving and converting three
of the four single-pin spares,
but never missing the pocket.
Malott played an inside angle

Matt McNiel Wins PBA
Lakewood Holiday Lanes
Storm Southwest Open
Lakewood, Colo., –
Wichita State University star
Matt McNiel of Chanhassen,
Minn., defeated Kris Koeltzow
of Wheat Ridge, Colo., 213-201,
to win the $2,500 first prize in
the third annual PBA Lakewood Storm Southwest Open at
Holiday Lanes Sunday.
McNiel, one of the nation’s
top amateur bowlers, rolled
games of 238 and 236 in the
final two games of the casher’s
round to grab the 12th and last
spot in the single-elimination
match play finals. He then
defeated fellow amateur Rick
Shafer of Arvada, Colo., 2-1, in
the best-of-three-game Round
of 12 and disposed of George
Brooks from Loveland, Colo.,
2-0, in the Round of 8. In the
semifinal round, he edged
Jason Duran of Littleton, Colo.,
228-227, to advance to the title
match.
McNiel doesn’t receive credit
for a PBA title because he is
not a member.
Koeltzow also had a tough
time getting to the title match,
first defeating Ed Petrie from
Clint, Texas, 2-0, in his Round
of 12 match before out-striking
PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss,

Random Thoughts
Tony Franklin, Publisher
Congrats to Wes Malott and
Norm Duke for the winning the
Roth/Holman PBA titles this
week in Indianapolis, IN. The
finals aired on ESPN Sunday
but were tape-delayed from
two weeks, but I have already
whined about that enough.
The big news was that it
was Duke’s 38th PBA title,
moving him into 3rd place
on the all-time list, and
Malott’s 10th title, which will
qualify him for Hall of Fame
consideration.
38 titles for Duke, man that
is amazing number, he trails
only Earl Anthony with 43
and Walter Ray Williams with
47. Duke is a native of Mount
Pleasant, TX, which is halfway
between Dallas and Texarkana,
but spent his formative bowling
years in Fort Worth.
He won his first title
at 18, which, if you really
think about it is absolutely
ridiculous, especially in 1983.
Then he goes eight years
before winning his second title
in 1991. So from 1991 until
today he won 37 titles in 24
years. Before doing some stat
checking that seemed pretty
awesome.
However, WRW Jr. won his
47 titles in 24 years also. But
wait there’s more.
Anthony won his 43 titles in
just 13 years!!
For good measure let’s
throw in Pete Weber with 37
titles in 31 years.
So these are the four greatest bowlers of all time right? I
don’t think there’s any doubt
about that one.
For my money I think
Weber is the greatest and most
physically talented bowler
there ever was. Duke is the
smartest, most educated and
easily the most savvy of all
gamesman that bowling has
ever seen.
If I could sit back and just
watch one person bowl over
and over, give me Marshall
Holman.
My favorite bowler; that’s an
easy one, Del Ballard. I learned
so much from him that has
stuck with me my entire life.
Lots of little things that are just
as important in real life as they
are on the lanes.
Let me sprinkle one out
there for you. No excuses. I
have never heard him EVER
make an excuse. If you didn’t
get the result you wanted, there
is only one person to blame,
so get better. That’s the type
of advice we can all use on an
everyday basis, and I learned
that from him at a really young
age.
Seems like I got off topic a
bit, so let me get back to Wes
and Norm. The one interesting

thing I learned from talking to
Wes after their victory was the
final game strategy.
Malott drilled the Marvel
Pearl before the show, and had
planned to bowl on the left
lane from the get so he would
have no issue with the ball
return, and he wanted to be left
of everybody and soft. Duke
had already told Wes that he
doesn’t carry well on the right
lane from past history so he
was just trying to get a couple
of strikes and no splits.
The strategy played out
perfectly with Malott saying
that he was “extremely focused
on winning” after losing to
Mike Fagan in the World
Championship title match a
few weeks back. Read the PBA
press release for a little more
info on their strategy.

I will leave you this week
with an interesting baseball
fact, or at least one that is
interesting to me.
Why do baseball players
wear hats in the field?
It’s the sun, right, it keeps
the sun out their eyes. Well
what about night games when
there is no sun? They still wear
hats regardless of day or night
games. Officially the first night
baseball game was in 1935, and
the players continued to wear
hats in the field, so it clearly
became part of the uniform,
but why?
Women softball players are
playing basically the same
game as baseball players, yet
they don’t wear hats. Some
wear visors, because of pony
tails and long hair, but the
pitcher rarely, if EVER wears
any type of hat. They mostly
wear headbands to keep the
hair out of their face.
I thought it was important
to wear a hat to keep the sun
out of your eyes…
Bottom line is I have no
idea.
When I golf I wear a hat,
sometimes I wear the hat
forward, mostly I wear the
hat backward. I always wear
sunglasses, but that’s because I
don’t want Daceman to see me
looking at him with disdain for
his horrendous golfing game.
I love wearing hats, on the
weekend I always wear a hat.
You know why…cause I don’t
want to do anything with my
hair…very simple, but I still
love hats. Just last weekend
Genie threw a “seriously” at
me about the number of hats
and beanies we have in the
closet. She even went so far as
to suggest I properly organize
the shelf in our closet into hat/
glove/beanie sections. I mean
the nerve of this girl. She
doesn’t own that closet, I don’t
own that closet, Wells Fargo
owns that closet. If they call
me up, then maybe I consider
some type of organization.
Bottom line, nothing makes
me happier than a good
baseball hat, I bet I have 100
that are in active rotation, I
just don’t understand why MLB
players wear them to work on
a Wednesday evening in July,
it’s just too much of a sweat
pocket.
Would you rather
have to “read” the lanes
or get them to
talk to you?
BowlU will change
everything about how
you see the lane.

on the left lane with his power
game, striking on six of his
seven shots.
“On day one in Milwaukee
(where qualifying rounds for
the doubles event took place
two weeks earlier), there was
so much traffic I had to play
straight,” Duke said. “I couldn’t
go around (the big-hook
players), but the shot I found
looked great and I told myself
to remember that, because I
figured that’s what we would
face in the TV finals if we got
that far, and that’s exactly what
happened.”
Malott followed Duke’s lead.
“We discussed the situation
and decided I’d finish the game
on the left lane, where I could
stand far to the left on the
approach and wouldn’t have
to deal with the ball return,”
Malott said. “We had to let the
conditions develop, but Norm
was okay on the right lane, and
I was okay on the left. Norm
told me some past history
about leaving single pins on
the right lane and I wanted
to make sure he remembered
what he told me.”
As predicted, Duke left
back-to-back single pins in his
first two frames of the Bakerformat contest. He said he was
contemplating a ball change in
hopes of striking, but Malott
talked him out of it.
“Wes told me to just live
with it,” Duke said. “He told
me, stick with the plan. We
got a couple more nine-counts,
but he just sat on that left lane
and pounded the pocket. That’s
the reason we worked together
so well. He believed in me
and I believed in him, and it
worked.”
While breaking his tie with
Pete Weber for third place
on the PBA career titles list
(behind Walter Ray Williams
Jr. with 47 and Earl Anthony
with 43) was memorable, Duke
was subdued about the
accomplishment.
“I don’t think anyone
believes Pete is done winning
titles,” the 50-year-old Duke
said. “I don’t like to think that
I’m done, either. This is part of
a process in building a career.
I’m glad to be part of helping
Wes build with his career, and
I’m certainly glad he’s helping
with mine, because without
him, I’m probably still chasing
Pete. But to be ahead of Pete for
even one day is a remarkable
achievement, and something I
truly value.”
Malott, 38, felt the same
about winning his 10th title,
which will earn him a spot
on the PBA Hall of Fame
ballot in seven years, when he
competes in his 20th year of
membership.
“Winning the doubles title
in 2011 after struggling for
a couple of years after I won
Player of the Year for the 200809 season kind of kick-started
me again,” Malott said. “Winning my 10th title and being
eligible for the hall of fame

Bowling News Network
Interviews USBC Executive
Director Chad Murphy
We saw recently that the
new USBC Strategic Plan has
been released and it contains
five basic PRIORITIES. Please
give us your comments on each
one.
Some of them come from
just obvious needs, and others
from the fact that we have been
a lot of things to a lot of people
and we had to get back to
‘what are we doing’ and ‘what
are we working on’ . . . so we
spent seven months business
planning across our entire
organization asking each and
every individual project owner
if you will what was their
detailed business plan; and
from that came the priorities.
They are pretty obvious
choices.
Information Technology is
something that we have not
been great at in the past, but
we have been processing a
high number of memberships
through the years so we need
to be great at it when supporting our local associations.
Technology means a lot of
things. It is not just processing
memberships. Things like the
Bowling Academy and live
feeds . . . if you go to bowl.com
today, you can watch every
pair at the Masters. You can
literally pull it up and see what
every pair is doing across the
house. That is an amazing tool.
So, we need to be great in
that space – those are the kinds
of things we are looking for.
Who are the two people you
mentioned in the IT Plan?
Robert Stokes and Christi
Bickley. Robert is Senior Director of Information Technology;
Christi is Director of Project
Management. One of the things
we have missed around here
the past few years is somebody
that was central to all of the
projects. Things would get
missed, and you don’t really
see it until it gets to the execution phase.
There is an old quote that
the process is more important
than the outcome.
Cristy and Robert will
raise our game. Those two
folks were hired through our
restructuring last fall.
Youth Development . . . that
is a fairly easy one for me. It
has been a lot of fun working
on it and it has been great
these past few years. We have
had some momentum with the
success of Junior Gold, but now
we want to widen that scope.
We have always had the U20
and U15 divisions; now we
have got to get it down to the
8 and 10 year olds. We have to
get kids engaged and to have
an affinity for our sport at an
earlier age and stay there for a
lifetime.
We are working on new
things. We have a new league
development program coming.
It is actually a partnership with
the PBA and PWBA; which is
the first time we have done
that in the youth area. We will
have stand ups and counter
cards featuring PBA and PWBA
players . . .
What a concept – I say that
a little sarcastically because
many people thought that this
should have happened years
ago when leaders chose to
promote celebrities from other
sports instead of our own.
Yeah, it is not much of a
stretch and it is kind of a big
deal, and we think it is a good
marketing concept that should
be fun; and that will roll out in
the next few weeks.
Another thing that people
may not know about our youth
plan is that we put a lot of new
people in the field. We have
had people traveling to center
after center meeting with managers and youth coordinators
to help increase and develop
new leagues. Saturdays are
great, and we need to continue
to support those programs, but
the moms of today operate in a
different cycle than we did in
the past.
And so we actually have
people in the field trying to
drive more traffic into youth
programs of all kinds; and to
help them build a better experience within the center so they
will stay engaged longer.
Marketing – across the
whole platform, is a big piece
of it too. Some of that will go
directly to membership value;
and all other areas.
Membership value in a
declining market is something
that is easy to tear down and
be critical of, but the reality is
if you really look at it and ask
‘What do we get for a USBC
membership;’ and the best
answer is that we get a future
for our sport . . . and that will
be the answer moving forward.
It is not so much what we get
as individuals, but an allencompassing deliverable really
looking at the sport side of it
growing over time and getting
back some of those key pieces
we had years ago. That will be
important.
And the last priority is our
Championship Tournaments.
We have got to get moving
around the country again.
Our bowlers, who are also
our customers, want the same
thing they always wanted
which is a good experience at
the tournament.
I always like to tell the
Billings story. People cried out
‘Why are we going to Billings?’
– but we had a great time in
Billings. We were treated well
and we had a lot of fun – and
the entry count may not have
been as big as other places,
but overall, it was a very good
experience. The goal of giving
folks a better experience than
they may have had in recent
years.

Yes. It is just tough to measure it that way knowing that
we are not in complete control.
The experience in centers is
what gets folks to stay. We can
help with that and support our
partners through the process,
but we are looking at 30 years
of data that suggests that we
are going to get smaller.
In operating your tournaments, given that professionals
have higher expectations than
amateurs, how will USBC differ
in running events like the
Open Championship versus the
new PWBA professional tour?
They are separate, but we
will have high standards for
both. We hired Damon Sarrocco and Jason Thomas to
head up those events. Both
have a deep history with
tournaments mostly on the
professional side, but they
will operate our championship
events as a whole package.

Of these five priorities,
which is the most important?
They are all important.
Good answer – OK, which is
the most urgent?
Same answer. There just
isn’t one thing. We don’t live in
a one size fits all world anymore, so we have to be diverse
in our offerings and we have
got to do well and be great at
those things.
You don’t see any weakness
in the organization which
might cause you to give attention to a particular area before
something else?
We have room to improve
across the entire platform.
There isn’t one area we could
look at and say ‘That’s perfect.’
We need to improve across the
board; and setting these priorities will get us out of some of
the mundane business and
make us focus on our mission.
Make no mistake about it. All
of these things are important;
and information technology
kind of brings all of the pieces
together.
Roger Dalkin’s infamous
prediction was that membership would go under a million
before it would level off. Was
Roger right?
Well, we said in a document
last week that the numbers are
going to continue to decline . .
. fewer centers; fewer leagues.
It all means less members. But
it doesn’t mean that we can’t
be successful in our programs.
USBC has been measured by
the barometer of membership
numbers. But that one number
isn’t the entire measurement.
I don’t think you can measure
any organization that does as
much as USBC does on one

In fairness, I think that is
what Roger was trying to say,
but when he used the words
“Thin the herd” it didn’t go

It isn’t so much operating

You could also use, as an
example, a marketing perspective. Leveraging the assets

important. A lot of folks have

again, and we will certainly
enjoy that . . . but the reason
that is happening is because
of that seven-year-old girl who
starts bowling next year. She
has to have someone to aspire
to be. That is why we are
getting into that space.
There will be very separate
but distinct offerings. The
same folks will run them, but
the tournament part is the
easy part. What might be a
little difficult is the high level
of marketing that needs to go
with them.
Let’s assume that the PWBA
will be successful and extend
well beyond the current three
year commitment. Will it
eventually become a ‘for profit’
part of the organization?
I don’t know the answer
to that. We have so much to
do right now, I have not even

considered what might happen
four or five years from now.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it
doesn’t take more than four
years to become profitable . . .
but I can tell you this – we are
extremely focused on getting
a tour in place. The future
will come later, and we will
be ready to look at the options
when we need to.
What is the USBC Bowling
Academy?
Essentially it is a third party
piece where we have licensed
our brand to help build the
coaching aspect of the sport.
It is an on-line portal, if you
will, of information that brings
us through the stance to the
five step approach to tools and
skills and tasks to become a
better bowler. It has a library
of options within it that can
be watched to become a better
bowler. Coaches can use the
tools to help them teach their
students. It is one of those really cool things that technology
has brought us that we really
have not yet taken advantage
of.
Is it catching on?
Yes. I think we had about
4,000 subscribers in the first
couple of months, which is
enormous.
Will your Marketing Plan
also include public relations
and advertising? How will that
roll out?
Yes. We have in-house P.R.
and we rely heavily on Strike

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London
[email protected]
In the second of a two-part
interview, PBA Commissioner
Tom Clark analyzes the recent
PBA television viewership
ratings increase, including
a steady increase in PBA
XtraFrame subscriptions.
JPA: With the overall
ratings increase, what number
or numbers have surprised you
the most thus far this season?
Tom Clark: The only
surprise was when the NBA
and ESPN decided to move
the Lakers/Knicks game off of
Super Bowl Sunday, enabling
us to agree to move our CP3
PBA Celebrity Invitational up
into that time slot. I believe
it helped our ratings that day,
being at 2-4 pm ET vs. the
4:30-6 pm ET regularly scheduled showing. That CP3 show
is always popular, but earlier it
did a tremendous viewership,
with over 1.1 million on average watching the show.
In the other areas where we
have increased ratings, they
were part of strategic decisions
that were made to improve
our viewership and we were
correct. Reducing the WSOB
animal pattern shows to 1-hour
length increased ratings on
those shows by 18%, making
the WSOB World Championship show live and moving the
other live major championship
shows into the prime earlier
February time slots at 1 pm
vs. 3 pm paid off. Show format
adjustments and features,
plus compelling competition
featuring a wide variety of
players have made the shows
clip along.
JPA: Masters and U.S. Open
weeks seem to draw more
viewers with more amateurs
from their area or viewers
watching ones they may know.
What is the increase in Xtra
Frame subscriptions over the
last year?
TC: The WSOB has always
been our most popular Xtra
Frame period for whatever reason, probably the depth of the
field, international nature of it
and the compelling competition
every single day with every
ball mattering so much because
multiple events are on the line
in such a tight timeframe. But
the growth of Xtra Frame has
been very encouraging all year.
Before the WSOB we were at
roughly 5,000 subscribers. It
grew to 6,500 during WSOB,
and now through the TOC it’s
at 7,500. I know that subscribers are getting their money’s
worth, the entertainment has
been endless. Adding Marshall
Holman to our webcast team
has been very popular. And
with the full PBA50 schedule
and seven Xtra Frame-only
national PBA tour title events
being covered start-to-finish,
the Summer Swing and WSOB
still to come this year, we
expect more and more people
to jump aboard.
JPA: What were the ToC
ratings Sunday compared to
last year’s ToC?
TC: Viewership about the
same as last year for the ToC,
850,000 on average. Although
we had a lower lead-in show
rating than last week, we
again grew the audience from
SportsCenter. The ToC was also
the highest rated sporting event
on cable TV on Sunday other
than the NBA All-Star Game.

Another treat of Tournament of Champions week was
hearing a couple of legends
and long-time friends on PBA
XtraFrame. We heard Marshall
Holman on last fall’s World
Series of Bowling and have
heard Mark Roth from time
to time at various times when
his health allows, but rarely
together. Viewers were treated
to several appearances from the
three-time winners of the PBA
doubles tournament which now
bears their names. If you have
a chance, go back to XtraFrame
and watch the ToC match play
rounds.
Not only will you listen
to the insight behind 56 PBA
titles, but it’s quickly apparent
these two could have been a
fantastic announcer-analyst
team.
################
Later on Tournament of
Champions Sunday, there was
even more dramatic bowling.
After the TNBA Reed-Hawthorn
Memorial Classic in Wycliffe,
Ohio, well-known top amateur
bowler Adam Barta challenged,
then broke the current world
record of total pinfall in a
one-hour time span. Based on
strict requirements put forth
by the Guinness Book of World
Records group, Barta knocked
down 2708 pins, besting 2139
mark by George Frilingos of
Queensland, Australia, set only
last November.
Rolling only at full racks,
Barta rolled an amazing 163
strikes out of 291 total balls
thrown.

Back to marketing . . . and
it is easy to be negative; but

talking about those things on

Five W will be a part of that

In the last phone conversation I had with Chuck Pezzano
about a week before he passed
away, he was a little puzzled
that bowling did not get more
media and P.R. leverage out of
the fact that the SMART Fund
has over $50 million. Do you
think we do enough to toot
bowling’s horn about SMART?
I think we do. I don’t know
if the message always hits
the intended target; but if you
ask a mother with a child in
bowling, or a coach, they know
that and I can give several

with bowling because of the
scholarships.
But to Pezzano’s point,
do you think anyone in the
mainstream sports or entertainment media has any idea that
bowling has that much money
in a scholarship program?
I think a lot of people are
interested in it.
I know golf, and baseball,
and soccer have a lot for kids,
but I’d be surprised if they
have anything like SMART.
There was a CBS Market
Watch piece a couple of
months ago that was looking
at SMART, so there is some
attention. Can we do better?
Absolutely. It has always been
a good marketing tool, and
we will continue to talk about
it. In the slide show we just
released we talk about bowling having $6 million a year
in scholarships. We also talk
about it in our ‘Bowling is a
healthy way to live’ segment.
We are pushing it in the

marketplace – it just has to go
deeper, and that is the task at
hand.
Do you agree that USBC,
and ABC & WIBC before that,
just tried to do too much;
maybe just tried to be too
many things to too many
people? And if you do, how
can today’s USBC stay more
focused on its basic purpose
and mission?
I do think we can lose focus
by widening the lens. There
is a wide range of things we
can work on. The challenge
is to get it down to something
we can be successful in; and
that is really what we did in
identifying our priorities. We
are going to be focused on the
areas we talked about and you
will see a lot of communications and P.R. around them. I
wouldn’t want to speak about
what folks did in the past,
because I think you can always
do more as long as you don’t
lose focus on what is important. I get caught talking about
core competencies of a governing body . . . and we must stay
focused on those. Our members
deserve that, and they are the
largest and most important
piece of the puzzle.
In the past, it seems like
the groups wasted a lot of time
and effort stepping on each
other’s toes; but that does not
seem to be as big a problem
today. At least for BPAA and
USBC. You seem to have a good
relationship. Is it because you
are under the same roof here
in Arlington?
I think it provides clarity.
One group is not trying to be
the other. We have a great relationship with our partners in
the BPAA and in the industry

as well. Initiatives like the YES
Fund and others have brought
us together in ways that maybe
were not possible before. I
think the strategic plans of the
two organizations make it very
clear. On the USBC side it is
about servicing our members
and providing benefits. And the
BPAA side is simple – they exist to enhance the profitability
of their members.
Is it safe to say that there
is more and better communications between USBC and BPAA,
and will it continue?
There is no doubt.
How does that extend to
other organizations, specifically the PBA?
I think we are stronger
together than we are apart. I
realize that is an easy thing
to say. It is a little tougher to
walk the walk. The PBA is a
for profit business. They have
owners and others that drive
that business, and they make
decisions that are independent.
If they were here on our
campus, I think there would
just be more communications.
I don’t know that the business
strategy would change much
because they are a very different organization at their core
and in their mission.
An example –the league program we are about to launch
using the pros. It only took a
couple of phone calls and they
were on board quickly. There
will always be ways we can
work together; and if we do
that more, we will be more
successful.
How long ago was it that
you were living in Kentucky
selling bowling balls?
I started here on April 10,
2010, so it has been almost five
years.
Did you ever dream when
you were doing that, that less
than five years later you would
be sitting in this office doing
this job? Your story really is
a good example of the cliche
“Only in America.”
We have been really blessed.
I pinch myself sometimes.

REMEMBER!
When I made the decision to
move from bowling balls to
bowling, it was a pretty harrowing process. I was working
for a great company with some
great people; and I learned
a lot through the process
of being with San Antonio
Columbia and in Hopkinsville;
I really enjoyed that. When this
opportunity came, it was not
easy to walk away.
But I have really enjoyed
it here. I have had a lot of

a beacon of light. Just think
about the folks who will come
through those doors in the next
50 years. It is just a great thing
to have to promote bowling.
Any place that has teaching
at its core is special. We have
some very good people working
very hard down there. We have
international teams coming in
all the time. We have the Combine and the World Coaches
Conference.
But I would not say that the
Training Center is “ours.” It
really belongs to all of bowling.
Other than the World
Coaches Conference, how do
you work with Kevin Dornberger and his World Bowling
organization?
I think you know we are
supporting the Olympic effort,
and we are in constant contact
with Kevin. He has done a
great job of keeping us in
the loop and updated. I had
dinner with him at the Summit
recently and there is a lot going
on. It seems like the level has
been raised recently. But all
of the bowling organizations
need to step up and work
together for bowling to be more
successful.
Back in October I hinted
to Frank DeSocio that World
Bowling should have an office
here. Do you agree?
This is the International
Bowling Campus, so that is
an easy answer. I don’t know
much about the history there,
but I know I drive down Six
Flags Drive every morning and
see the International Bowling
Campus sign on the building
and know that it is not just
ours. It belongs to bowling.
I do know that Kevin
is opening a new office in
Europe. I don’t know if he

right people in the room. I am
a roll up your sleeves type of
guy. I like to get in and do my
share of the work, but at the
same time we need experts in
some areas. Robert Stokes is an
example. I would never roll up
my sleeves and go over there to
write some code. We would be
in trouble if I did that.
Are you in this job for the
long term? Do you see yourself
in this job 10 years from now?
The short answer is yes.
I’m 43, and I never aspired to
have this job, but I have been
a lifelong bowler and I have
really enjoyed the past year.
My plan is to work hard, and if
we can be successful, I hope I
can be here a long time.
Another good move I have
heard mentioned is having
a clear understanding of the
number two position. When
Stu Upson was here, we were
not sure who was second in
command.
Yes- Jason Overstreet is our
Deputy Director. He has a great
background in media, and
many other talents. It was an
easy choice.
Any final thoughts?
We have had a lot of change
here, and I think we are coming out of it in a very positive
way. I am driven to make it as
good as it can be and I am very
excited about the future.

your awareness. Watch everyone’s rotation and ball path a)
all the way down the lane and
b) through the pins. It doesn’t
matter if the other person rolls
the ball like you or even with
the same hand as you. More
on this handedness thing in a
moment.
You’ve heard of the
“breakpoint,” I’m sure. That’s
really quite a misnomer. It’s
not a point at all. It’s an area
of the lane. It used to be that
the “breakpoint” was given to
you by the lane. That’s only
partially true today. Oh, and
don’t confuse breakpoint with
exit point, a product of the
theory of 31. This idea says you
have the best chance to hit the
pocket (not necessarily strike)
if your ball is on a certain
board when it exits the pattern.
That board is determined by
the distance the oil is down the
lane minus a given of 31.
So, on a THS of 40 feet,
you’d want your ball to be on
the 9th board at 40 foot mark
in order to give yourself a
chance to hit the pocket. On
the PBA’s Badger pattern at 52
feet, this theory would have
your ball at 21 only eight feet
from the headpin. Since the
pocket is on 17, you can see
this clearly wouldn’t work.
The oil pattern does commonly give you the left-right
breakpoint. You, however,
can develop the north-south
breakpoint. That’s what growing your breakpoint is all about
– length, not width. Whatever
that area was on the lane for
whoever you are watching, all
you have to do is figure out
how YOU get there. That’s it.
It’s that simple. So, how do you
get that done?
First things first
There are some givens that
have nothing to do with the
purpose of your bowling event
but a great deal to do with how
you score in it. For example,
how old and what type of lane
surface you’re playing on is
very important. Knowing how
each surface typically behaves
can give you an edge in getting
lined up faster which is, of
course, the point.
Wood will respond very differently than any synthetic lane
and they will both be drastically different than lane with
Guardian on it. Wood changes
quickly and more dramatically
than synthetics. AMF HPL or
SPL synthetic lanes respond
differently than Brunswick’s
ProLane or Anvilane synthetics, for example.
Synthetics are harder than
wood. The harder the surface,
the smaller the footprint of
the ball on that surface. Even
among synthetic surfaces, there
are differences. AMF synthetic
surfaces have a different hardness than Brunswick synthetic
surfaces.

Bowling Update
From Ten Pins & More
Rio Rancho High School
bowlers scored well in the
overall season from October
through last Saturday but
fell short in the state 6A
Championships.
Cleveland rebounded in
their last three matches, coming from the loser’s bracket, to
beat out Mayfield and runnersup, Rio Rancho in an exciting
finish at Holiday Bowl.
The Rams captain, Ben Stedman fired a personal best 769
three-game series that included
a 277 to help the team to a
second place finish in the seedings round with 2,932 behind
top seeded Cleveland 2,983 but
ahead of El Dorado’s 2,883.
That spot earned the top
two a bye in to round two
where Rio Rancho relegated
Sandi High 2-0 on games of
218-155 and 195-146 in the
Baker-format matches.
After sitting out round three
with a bye they beat La Cueva
171-134 then lost a tie-breaker
60-59 after earlier tying at 159
before shooting 211-167 and
setting up the winner’s bracket
final against Mayfield.
They lost the first match
164-179 but came back in a
low scoring finish 148-133 and
193-180 to take the number
one place going in to the finals
against Storm.
A 223-202 first game win
in the championship round
looked promising for the Rams
to repeat the title they were
defending but a late three
strikes in a row gave Cleveland
game two, 224-212.

It was all Storm in game
three 201-157 after three splits,
all open frames by the Rams
tied the tournament’s two
heavyweight teams at one loss
apiece.
Cleveland got off to a good
start in the final clash, winning 247-181, followed by a
nail-biting finish in the second
game that went to Cleveland
210-204.
Stedman was consoled with
the league’s all-time high average award of 215, a berth on
the All-Star state squad, along
with fellow Rams’ Carson
Opela, Natalia Tchiloyans and
Courtney Dawes as well as the
high game and series award at
the state final.
In other events, East
Mountain beat out Pojoaque
and Sandia Prep in 4A action,
while Piedra Vista beat Farmington and Artesia in the new
5A final.
(Leading up to the 12th New Mexico Open in 2015)
The softer the surface (like
old wood), the larger the footprint, i.e. a larger portion of the
ball surface is in contact with
the lane surface. The more of
the ball’s surface in contact
with the lane, the greater influence the lane will have on that
ball. Larger footprints = more
friction. More friction = more
hook potential.
There are a myriad of things
to which you should pay attention including the ball and its
path through the pins, who you
are crossing with, what type of
rotation they have, what part
of the lane they’re playing, the
ball surface they have chosen,
and who you are following.
Next month we’ll talk about all
that.
