Dave “Doc” Medich Established in 1989, IVHOG is celebrating it’s 22nd year as a Harley Owners Group chapter. IV HOGGERS, In business for over 65 years, Dean’s Harley Davidson of Souderton, PA is our sponsoring Dealer. Our Monthly Chapter Meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall 75 N. Main St. Sellersville, PA. For information regarding membership or chapter events, contact any officer listed herein. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Director’s Ramblings 1 Chapter Meeting Minutes 2 Calendar/ Events 4 Feature s & Stories 5 Business and Classified Section 8 Officer Directory 10 it your interest level? All of you have been given many opportunities to share your thoughts about different events and ride destinations. Step up: volunteer and participate. Have your voice heard. We had many great events planned but subsequently had to cancel because of low commitments. You can only get out of this club what you are willing to put into it. It has been a challenging year. Bringing on as many new members as we have, in such a short time, has been a daunting task. The job to combine 2 HOG chapters where ideas, event choices, ride destinations and many others things which were so different continues to be demanding and time consuming, but worth the effort. What I do not like to hear are comments such as: “we are not renewing” and “we do not feel welcome”. I hear this second hand so if you as a member have an issue please speak up. You can reach out to any board member or bring your concern up in the general membership meeting. Either way we will respond as we have in the past. I hope everyone gets my point. We are one club and I personally am proud to be a member of Indian Valley HOG. Remember elections are coming soon. If you qualify to run for a position, do it. Please reference the IVHOG bi-laws as this provides the mechanism for walking the walk instead of talking the talk. On a lighter note, Randy discussed remaining 2012 models and plans for when the first 2013 is due in. There are not many 12’s left so stop by and check out the inventory. Great work again this year Randy and the team at Deans. Finally, I ask you all to extend a warm “get well” to Bud Dean as he recovers from surgery. Everyone knows about issues relating to our former meeting sites. These issues have arisen because of the rapid growth of the club (that’s the good news). The IVHOG board has tried to respond to those concerns. After a lot of work looking into other meeting site possibilities, we chose the Sellersville Moose Lodge. In preparation for our first meeting there, several of the officers went to the facility to insure the Moose was ready for us. I hope all of you that attended the meeting felt the location was a solid choice and agree that in the long term gives IVHOG a ton of flexibility. There is plenty of parking, it’s easy and safe getting into and out of and is an all round solid improvement. In addition, you may have taken a look across the road to see the large pavilion, volleyball court, grill area and air conditioned bathrooms - yes outdoor air conditioned bathrooms. The place is set to host many events for our club. We are very excited and early member feedback has been extremely positive. Now, let me return to the question of member participation. Everything we do for our events from planning to execution is for the benefit of all the members. And the ultimate success of any event is measured by the participation of our members. Without your involvement whether by participating or volunteering at a specific event, our success as a club is limited. We do have a core group of members that continue to volunteer. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. I, and the rest of the board, want to extend a huge “thank you” to them (they know who they are). But there are many who do not get involved. How do we get the rest of you interested? What will it take to donate a bit of your time to help plan and deliver an event? A club member was posted at the old site to redirect people and a sign was placed on the corner of the street to help people find the site. Parking on the blacktop is reserved for Motorcycles. Parking for cars is across the street in the gravel lot. These parking lots will be a lot safer for exiting bikes. Buddy Dean, owner of Dean’s Harley Davidson is going to be out of the store for several weeks because he had an operation on his neck and will be in a nursing home for several weeks following the procedure. The Secretary sent flowers from the club and people were asked for their good will. He is in the Manor Care Nursing Home in Montgomeryville. Indian Valley HOG made East Coast Biker 3 times in the latest issue. There is a report on our 65th Anniversary Party at Dean’s H-D, an ad for the Toy Run on Oct. 13th, and a report on our very successful softball game between Indian Valley HOG club and Lehigh Valley HOG club. Extra copies of East Coast Biker were available at the meeting. We need members to volunteer for several important events this fall: Indian Valley HOG’s Toy Run (in its 10th year!) (Oct.13th), Lansdale Bike Night (Sept. 8th) and Manna on Main Street’s 5K Run (Oct.20th). See Pat Ford, Deb Keller, Vi Schiethauer, Liz Quigley to volunteer for the Toy Run. See Doc to volunteer for Lansdale Bike Night. We will have IVHOG table at the event. Manna on Main St. is holding a 5K Run to raise money for their free food programs. They need us to cover the street corners for the 5k Run. Manna will provide us with some special parking. See any officer to volunteer for the 5K Run. We take our community commitment seriously and we need to raise some volunteers for these events. Watch this space for more information. IVHOG Elections in November – Remember that to run for office, a member must be in good standing for one year. You must make at least three meeting to vote and 8 meetings to accept a position. It is preferred that a member hold an office before running for a primary officer’s position. October 6th - Chili cook-off! Get your recipes ready! Assistant Director - Chris Corey: Chris was not in attendance. Treasurer- Ken West: Today marked the date of Sal Albano’s retirement as the treasurer and Ken West’s assumption of the responsibility of treasurer. Ken asked that any questions or problems that might come up be addressed to him directly Ken reported to the membership on the success of the HOG roast. Secretary- Liz Quigley: Liz reported that the Toy Run Committee held a successful Vendor Fair last week and raised funds for the Toy Run. Pat Ford, the chair of the Toy Run, reminded the club that they should be getting donations for the raffle for the Toy Run. Committee members should be meeting NOW; see any committee member to volunteer. Liz also noted that a memorial ride will be held for Jim Edkin, longtime member who passed away recently. This memorial ride will go up to the Blue Mountain Drive-In where we will pick up Cindy Edkin. (continued on page 3) AUGUST 2012 PAGE 3 Chapter Meeting Minutes Continued Then we will ride to Columcille, a private megalith park in Bangor that is open to the public. The park is a beautiful, green, sacred space with Stonehenge type stone circles where we can have private memorial moment. Simply copy and paste this link into your web browser and follow the instructions: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ AUGUST 2012 Why I Ride By Barb Sudell Learning to ride a motorcycle was never on my “to do” list. I confirmed this when my kids got mini-bikes and told me to ‘give it a try.’ By the time they finished explaining what to do with the left hand, the right hand, the right foot, and the left foot, I knew that riding was not for me. Come to think of it, I had learned that riding was taboo when I was a teenage passenger on the back with a “learning” rider. He took off so fast that I almost fell off the back. When he stopped, I jumped off and swore that I would never ride again. In my late 20’s, I did learn to enjoy being a passenger when I rode with a good rider. Most of the time, I was under-dressed for the weather, but it was fun having the wind blow through my hair without having any responsibilities. But, riding was always something I did because someone else loved it. Then in my 50’s, little by little, two female friends started to put the bug in me – “It’s really a lot of fun;” “You’d really enjoy it;” “What else are you going to do when you’re not skiing;” “You should sign up for the course.” So, I did. But I was scared to death! Fortunately, the 125 bikes were like bicycles with lawn mower engines, so I struggled through the course – dropping it, stalling it, making it buck, knocking down cones, struggling to get it into neutral, and grinding the engine when turning it on. I was surprised that that poor little bike survived me! Performing the riding skills was not much better – when we practiced stopping quickly, my instructor had to jump out of the way; my Figure 8 never formed; and weaving through the cones created a lot of dead orange soldiers. But, by some miracle, I passed the exam! Foolishly (or is it insanely?), I decided to buy a bike. Actually, I realized that no one was going to be dumb enough to let me ride his/her bike, so if I wanted to ride, I was going to have to get my own bike. Everyone had an opinion about what I should buy. Some said to buy a small one and grow into a bigger one. Others said to get a medium size, so I wouldn’t out- PAGE 5 grow it so soon. I went with the latter advice and got a Honda Shadow 600. The first time out, I crashed into the curb at the end of a cul-de-sac and bent the clutch pedal so badly that it ended my ride. Not a problem, though, because a friend took off the pedal, gave it to me, and told me to take it to Montgomeryville Honda and get a replacement. (For a while, I use the mangled pedal as a paperweight.) Two weeks later, I was ready to go again. So, my friends took me to a nearby schoolyard – one friend on her bike; another on mine, and I followed in a car. With my friends as coaches, I practiced riding the bike around in a circle and coming to a stop. But, every time I stopped, I dropped the bike! It was awful. Then, I tried riding my friend’s Honda 250, and that felt much better. Darn, I should have gotten a smaller bike! I sulked for a few weeks before I got determined to ride that darn Shadow 600. But, I needed to get the bike to my house (it was in my friend’s garage) without me riding it! So, we worked out a plan, and got to my house on a Saturday. Sunday was beautiful, so I decided to conquer the bike. But, to prove that I could handle the weight and size, I wanted to push-walk it around my parking lot. I got all dressed up in my motorcycle gear (helmet, gloves, boots, and leather jacket), unlocked the bike, turned the key to “on,” jumped into the seat, and started pushingwalking it around my parking lot. I’d push a little bit, then hit the brake, and then push some more, slowly inching around the lot. And, I didn’t drop it! I was feeling pretty good. Some guys were standing outside talking, and every now and then, they would look over at me proudly pushing my motorcycle. AUGUST 2012 Why I Ride By Barb Suddell As I got near them, one of the guys yelled out, “Hey, hon, do you need help starting that thing?” I laughed and assured him that I wanted to push it, and I continued around the lot. Finally, I pushed it to the bottom of a hill. At that point, I decided to turn the bike on (actually, I need it on to get back up the hill) so I could practice some more with the engine running. I pressed the red button to “on” and nothing happened. What? I tried switching it from “on” to “off” and back to “on” again, and still nothing happened. What the heck? I got off the bike and made sure the key was turned to “on.” It was. Now, I did need that guy to help me start it, but he was gone! I ran around and found a guy with a motorcycle to help me, but he couldn’t get it started either. Finally, we both realized that I had drained the battery pushing it around with the lights on! Duh! Between the two of us, we got it back into a parking space. I went out and purchased a new battery, winterized the bike as best I could without the engine running, and let it sit for the winter. That was in October 2002. In April 2003, I installed the new battery, got the bike running again with the help of a friend, and started riding it around my development. With the help of another friend (who had stopped riding when he had children), I got out on the road and got lots of road experience following him around. He took me on stripped roads, gravel roads, dirt roads, and pot-hole-filled roads, until I was thrilled to ride on regular paved roads! He even took me up Uhlerstown Road by mistake, and it was in terrible condition, with potholes all the way up! I also joined a riding club, and starting going on their monthly rides, where I learned about group riding. Now I ride between 8,000 and 10,000 miles a year and I can’t remember what it’s like to not ride a motorcycle. I even join the Polar Bear Grand Tour every year so that I can ride in the winter (they ride every Sunday between October and April). Somewhere between all of the stalling, falling, dropping, and flopping, I learned to love riding a motorcycle, and I’m really happy that my friends PAGE 6 put it on my “to-do” list! Was learning to ride worth all of the aggravation? Absolutely. Riding a motorcycle keeps you in the present (or in the “Now” as some people say). There are no yesterdays and no tomorrows when you’re riding, only the road, the wind, and the smell of everything around you. It’s amazing how close you feel to your surroundings when riding. For Your Information…….On the Internet I found this site to contain a wealth of information on all things motorcycle. Great helmet reviews for example. http://www.webbikeworld.com/ AUGUST 2012 BU SINESS DIRECTORY State of Business – Bike Illuminators As a member of IV HOG for 7 years now, we wanted to share this information with the club first. As of January 2012, Bike Illuminators is currently on hiatus. I have been dealing with numerous medical limitations that have kept me from actively supporting the business for the last 5 + months now. We are in search of a possible buyer for the business and would like to keep it in the local area if possible. We do have some inventory in stock so if anyone has been on the fence about adding lights now is a good time to reach out to us. We have kits in many different colors and they will be sold below retail pricing. We also have some other items such as Brake Lights, Flex Arrays and Turn Signal Clusters. Over the coming weeks/months we will be looking to sell the Business which will include the current inventory along with the domains and Name. We have enjoyed every bike we have lit up to make it a bit safer and want to thank IV HOG for all the support over the years. If anyone is interested in any items please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or you can call 215-510-5245 and leave a message. I still plan to be a part of IV HOG and to attend the local events now as a spectator not as a vendor.
