DECEMBER 2012
Introduction
by Rob Heard
Wessex
Area Team
I can hardly believe that another year is nearly up and we will soon be
into 2013. This has been an exceptional year for the country with the
Olympics, Queen’s Jubilee and one of the wettest years on record.
Let’s hope next year brings more sun and lots of opportunities to brush
off the cobwebs from parking the cars up for the winter.
For those who were unable to come along to our Christmas do, you will
have missed my DVD to music with selected photos from the last
year’s events. Well don’t worry you can see the show by going to our
regions You Tube account where the video can be viewed. Click here
to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qcbGmHIFI4
I hope next year to be able to attend many more events and if anyone
is keen in organising any event then please let me know. To try and
give us an opportunity to get the cars out in February I have moved
that months meet to the weekend of Saturday 2nd or Sunday 3rd
February. My idea is to have a drive out then end up for lunch
somewhere. If you have any ideas where to go then let me know. Dick
Lovett’s in Swindon is offering us to
come and visit on the Saturday and we
may be able to get a caterer in for food
as well. What do you think?
Well finally I wish you and your family a
very Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year. Why not send my photos of your
Christmas’s for the next newsletter. I am
off to Denmark, so expect lots of snow!

Roy Dempster, Andrew Goord, Phil Worrall, Peter James,
Mike Hooper, Kevin Wallace
On Saturday 16th February 2013 is the Ferrari
Owners Club annual area group Karting
Challenge at G.P. Karting in Northampton. I have
submitted an application for the Wessex Team to
take part. This event is in its 14th year and has
become very popular and is often oversubscribed.
It is a 3-hour enduro and consists of a maximum
of 10 teams of 4 to 6 drivers. During the race you
have to have 11 driver changes, which means
that with a team of 6 drivers, each would have
two drives during the race.
The only rules are that each team member must
be a member of the Ferrari Owners Club or
Prancing Horse Register, be over 15 and 5'3'' or
over.

We would love as many people to turn up and
support us.

* Meet Motor sport legends Sir Stirling Moss and
commentating icon Murray Walker on the live
interview stage.
* High octane action as the Group B Rally cars
battle it out on our Live Rally Stage. Plus see

Piazza Italia
Horsham
Friday 29th March 2013
DECEMBER 2012
As normal I will be organising a convoy to the
event, meeting up at Goodwood Race Circuit.
Very special rates have been agreed for overnight
accommodation at the deluxe South Lodge hotel.
On Good Friday a complimentary breakfast will
be served to all drivers, their passengers, the
Marshals and the police taking part in Piazza
Italia. The cost to take part will remain at £25 per
car as it was this year.
This event is organised by Sussex Area Group
and starts at South Lodge Hotel and ends up with
a static display of Ferraris around the town centre
streets of Horsham. The event is to raise money
for local charities. It has, as always, proved very
popular. Planning is well underway for next year’s
7th Horsham Piazza Italia which will again take
place on Good Friday.
For 2013 they are accepting slightly less cars
than they had for this year and are again presorting them into areas according to types.
East Street - Ferraris from F355 onwards with
power steering due to parking locations and to
avoid any overheating. (Of cars and drivers!)
The Carfax - All Ferraris including those without
power steering and all models likely to over-heat
if waiting to park.
Market Square - A very special display of
‘Classic’ Ferraris to celebrate the 7th year of
Piazza Italia.
Swan Walk side of The Carfax - a very special
display of Ferrari F40’s positioned to allow
viewing and pictures to be taken.
The event will start from South Lodge and convoy
in units of ten Ferraris to the outskirts of Horsham
where we will wait until 12:30pm when the police
outriders will escort us into Horsham.
The centre of Horsham will be closed to all traffic
except our Ferraris. This year the police
estimated that there were 15,000 people waiting
at the sides of the roads into Horsham to see the
spectacle of the Ferraris arriving.
The format will be similar to this year with South
Lodge once again sponsoring the Ferrari aspects
of this event. The event will start with a black tie
four course gourmet dinner the evening before
Good Friday. (you don’t have to take part in the
dinner to do the Piazza Italia event on Good
Friday but it is a super way to start the whole
event).

It will again be a fun event to take part in. At this
stage if you have a ‘classic’ Ferrari and want to
display in Market Square just drop me an email
with details, other than that make a note in your
2013 diaries only. Nothing else to do just yet.
Application forms for Piazza Italia dinner and
Piazza Italia event have be sent out in the
December issue of Ferrari News. Again it will be
first come first served as we are sure to be oversubscribed. No need to panic though, if you get
your forms off in the first two weeks or so you will
get a place with no problem.
St Georges Classic Car Tour
Sunday 21st April 2013
DECEMBER 2012
The Organisers have said:
THE ROUTE will be a scenic 90 miles around
The New Forest, one of the newest National
Parks. You will see a Noah’s Ark line up of
animals, but look out for the black spotty pig!! If
you thought that The New Forest was full of trees
you will be surprised to find a lot of areas of open
moor land, as Henry VIII nicked all the trees to
build his fleet!!
THE START will be from the GirlguideUK centre
at Foxlease, Lyndhurst, Hampshire. We don’t
think any previous car event has started from this
delightful New Forest location. Foxlease has been
the centre for Hampshire Girl Guides since the
early 1920s. Although still active as Girl Guide
centre for camping and activity weekends,
Foxlease is now also available to hire out for
conferences and weddings. Included in your entry
fee will be tea or coffee and bacon butties at the
start.
HALFWAY will be at the Empress of Blanding’s
PH, Copythorne. Included in your entry fee will be
your lunch, details will be announced nearer the
time.
This event is organised by the Salisbury CSMA &
Sarum Marshalling Team to raise money for the
Hampshire and Air Ambulance. The event is open
to any classic car or a modern classic. They are
keen to have any Ferrari from any age to come
and join in. The joining instructions state they
want pre-1988 vehicles, but Ferrari’s and other
specialist cars, I am told by the organisers are
likely to be allowed by organiser’s discretion.
THE FINISH will be at the world-renowned
Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum. There is a
discounted entry fee of £5 each payable on entry
to the Museum and there will be plenty of time for
everyone to look round this superb collection and
perhaps even get to meet Sammy Miller.
ENTRY FEE will be a minimum of £55. For your
£55 entry fee a car and two occupants will get tea
or coffee and bacon butties at the start, lunch at
halfway, rally plate and event sticker, a tulip road
book including points of interest information.
ENTRIES The entries will open around 1st
January. Everyone who has entered a previous St
Georges and anyone who is on the mailing list will
receive the information on the same day. No prebookings will be taken.
This is a great event that a number of members
from Wessex take part in every year. If you are
interested in joining in then let me know and once
the joining instructions are released I will forward
these to you.

The Cricketers Arms
Eastleigh
Thursday 1st November 2012
This month we tried a new venue in Eastleigh and
actually ended up with a great turnout and two
new members coming along to see us. Welcome
to Phil Weaver and his wife and Ptol Slattery. We
hope to see them both again soon. The Council
had just started gritting the roads but the two new
members brought there lovely Ferrari’s out for the
evening.
Wessex Charity Ball
Saturday 20th October
2012 was the night for
the
2nd
Wessex
Charity Ball organised
by Roy and Sioux
Dempster at the White
Hart Mecure Hotel in
Salisbury. All of the
funds raised are to go
to the Wallace and
Gromit Appeal again. This charity has a personal
connection to Roy and Sioux as their niece,
Amber, has benefited from the good work the
charity does for children’s health and raising
money for sick children in hospitals and hospices
throughout the UK. Most who attended the ball
stayed the night and it was a great opportunity to
dress up and let your hair down. The theme for
the ball was Whacky waistcoats and handbags,
and nearly everyone entered into the spirit with an
array of fantastic and whacky ones on display.
WESSEX FERRARI NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2012
The evening started in the bar at 7pm with a
complimentary glass of champagne where Sioux
and Roy sold raffle tickets and handed out
numbered fake £50 notes!
We were then invited into the ball room where
Roy and Sioux had worked there magic producing
a beautiful and atmospheric ball room. As always
attention to detail was evident everywhere. Each
person had a Wessex Ferrari personalised
napkin, names plate and array of toys and games
for each person to play with. One big hit were the
fake moustaches, eyebrows and sideburns which
soon adored nearly everyone. Soon it looked
more like a Movember get together more than a
Ferrari meet!
It was then time for the wonderful three course
meal with tasty and generous portions and
complimentary glass of wine for each guest. Each
table had a toy car on it which had the number of
the table on it, and this was soon to be utilised.
Following the meal Sioux invited a representative
from each table to bring their toy car to the dance
floor and have a car race across the dance floor.
Toy car racing
Following this we were all asked to have a look at
the numbered £50 notes we had been given in
the bar and one number was selected and a prize
given to one lucky person. This really got
everyone in a great mood and it was then time for
the raffle. Lots of great prizes had been donated
and it appeared that almost everyone got
something. It was then time for the Charity
Auction. Extremely generous donations were
made from many especially from some of the
local Ferrari dealers and Ferrari specialists. This
was a real money generator and Sioux’s
company had agreed to match the money raised,
thus doubling the proceeds for the charity. In total
the evening raised £1,600, which was a great

success. Generous gifts from the dealers were
from Meridien Modena who supplied a Ferrari
Coffee table and Ferrari paperweight / picture
frame, and Dick Lovett’s offered a VIP day for a
person to view the dealership and ride out in a
458 Italia.

of time and thought had
been given to this, with
many
being
made
especially for the occasion.
The winner was Diane Day

Wessex Christmas
On Thursday 13th December we had our annual
Christmas bash at Drusilla’s Inn in Horton,
Dorset. We had a great turnout of 47 people who
all fully enjoyed the evening. This year the Inn
extended the lounge we hold our bash in, this
gave us plenty of room to spread out without
feeling cramped.
It was then time for the evening entertainment.
The music started and many took to the dance
floor to strut there funky stuff. Others took to the
casino table to play black jack with there
complimentary £50 token.
Again I was able to play the DVD of this years
events to music, which I produce every year. It
really does amaze me every year how many
things we get up to in the Wessex region. If you
were unable to come along to the bash then you
can still see the DVD by clicking on this link:

PFFC reviews and updates
By Phill Grimshaw
They thinks it’s ALL OVER
Even in October and November there is stuff to
do.
Brooklands Motorsport Day
On October the 14th Brooklands held an autumn
motor sport day, Ray and I met with the Surrey
group for a coffee at Ocham Bites, and then
made our way to Brooklands for the day. Hill
sprints took place on the Brooklands site, and
track action at Mercedes Benz world. Good
weather was enjoyed by all.
In it's second year now, the Motor sport Show
was held at Silverstone in the new F1 suite. Rod,
myself and Ray went to have a look, but not much
to report on it, and we probably won't go next
year.
Having lots of fun at the Christmas bash

Dick Lovett’s F12 Launch
Thursday 8th November, Dick Lovett’s held an
evening to launch the F12 Berlinetta, and a great
evening it was. Roy and Sioux, Tony, Peter, Ray
and myself went along, and enjoyed lovely
canapé’s, and for the non drinkers, champagne
was in abundance.
David Piper, and Richard Attwood were
interviewed by Ed Foster from Motor Sport
magazine on stage, and we were entertained by
some great stories of Ferrari racing of the past.
David also had 4 of his Ferrari race cars on show
for the evening. So many thanks to Matthew, and
Natalie for another great event.
Meridien Modena F12 Launch
DECEMBER 2012
Paul, the Race driver and instructor introduced
me to the car, and drove us to Millbrook, and
once getting in we headed for the mile straight.
Launch control was initiated in Paul’s hands, and
we shot of like a scalded cat. He put the brakes
on at 176 mph and we retuned to the beginning of
the straight.
MY TURN !!!! Paul had me apply the breaks at
173 mph, boy these cars are quick.
Next the Bowl, and it really doesn't feel natural
driving at 135 mph, with no hands on the wheel,
however, I've now done what those nutters on
Top Gear and the like do for a job. The alpine
circuit was great fun, I enjoyed my drive around it,
and thought I was quite quick until Paul asked if
I'd like him to take me round on a couple of fast
laps. OMG as they say in text speech, absolutely
amazing.
NEC Classic Car Show
Saturday 18th November was the day, Toby,
Andy, Rob, Rod, and myself took a visit to the
NEC for the Classic Car Show. So much to see,
too much for one day really. The FOC stand was
there as always, and we all had a fine time.
Friday 9th November, and it was time for Meridien
to hold their F12 launch. The celebrities this time
were James Martin and a guest chef from
Saturday Kitchen. The evening was great fun,
and as much food as you could eat, and as much
booze as you could possibly consume .A live
DJ gave the evening a real party atmosphere.
Geoff and Lynne, myself, Ian, and a few others
enjoyed a lovely evening. So my thanks go to
Glenn and his team at Meridien who put on a fab
event.
Phill tests the new 458 Italia
So they think it's all over at the end of September,
but clearly it is not. And I nearly forgot that on
Sunday 11th November, a bunch of us met at
Goodwood, and 10 of us sat outside of the Aero
club, and enjoyed breakfast in the sunshine. The
cars included,430, 360, 458, 355, .GT4, and a
456m. Great morning had by all.
Phill
Grimshaw
Tuesday 13th November, and it was my chance
to sample the performance of the 458 Italia.
WOW is about right to sum this car up. I had been
invited to a day at Millbrook by those lovely
people at Dick Lovett’s. I met Natalie at Flitwick
Manor and had some lunch, and lots of coffee
before my driving Experience at the Millbrook
ground.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
By Steve Day
Last year my wife (without my knowledge)
arranged for us to have a week in Abu Dhabi to
include the Etihad Grand Prix and a visit to Ferrari
World, Abu Dhabi style.
I have only ever been to one Grand Prix and that
was several years ago at Silverstone, all I
remember of that was the pain of getting in and
out. If my memory serves me right it was the year
that Schumacher took out Damon Hill very early
in the race. I have also been to Monaco for the
Historic Grand Prix and that was great.
Back to Abu Dhabi, we travelled with Etihad
Airways arriving on the Wednesday, from a cold
wet England to an evening of clear skies and a
temperature still in the late 70. Our trip to the
Mercure Hotel in town was about half an hour and
only cost about £18, which was a nice surprise. (I
had it in my mind that it would be very expensive).
We have visited Abu Dhabi before but only on a
day trip from a cruise.
The Hotel was very pleasant with two nice
restaurants (Chinese and French) and a lovely
little bar. Thursday was spent exploring /
shopping / drinking / eating / acclimatising.
Friday was taken
up by a whole day
at Ferrari World.
We received a free
upgrade to the
park on production
of
our
FOC
membership cards.
(Saving about £36)
The taxi to the park
took us around the
perimeter of the
circuit, it’s very
impressive. Once
in, we spent some
time just getting a
feel for the place
and checking the time of shows, then headed to
the fastest rollercoaster in the world! On the way
we took a slow car ride around the “factory” and it
was a good representation of the real thing. We
also managed a pretty quick ride on the Fiorano
GT Challenge, but nothing comes close to the
shear exhilaration and acceleration of the
Formula Rossa.
WESSEX FERRARI NEWSLETTER
From a short build up as you load into the cars to
a gentle roll out along the track to a sudden, near
violent injection of speed, your breath is
momentarily lost, your vision is impaired and your
body is thrust back into your seat. As you regain
some of your senses you are catapulted around
the track wondering just what you have let
yourself in for, then it’s over!
Once was enough for us but I can understand the
urge to go back for more. Had the line for the
front seats been shorter, that would have been
the place to be, but never the less what a truly
remarkable feeling, and such a relief when it’s
over!
It was from the park that we heard our first
sounds of the cars on their free practise, it’s a
great sound and one that is not quite the same
when not live. The expectation and thrill of the
next two days was starting to build. We had a
great day in the park and would recommend to
any one visiting Abu Dhabi.
Saturday we arrived at
the circuit in plenty of
time to collect our
Fanvision - a hand held
TV monitor that gives full
cover of the race with
options on commentary,
track/sky/BBC you can
also choose the screen to watch, the track as
seen on TV the race states or drive with one of
the cars, it was a great help on the day to keep
track of positions after pit stops. The taxi ride to
the track took just over 40 min on both days
(Sat/Sun) and we could have been seated within
an hour of leaving our hotel. The organisation
was fantastic, on Saturday there must have been
PAGE 12
ISSUE NUMBER 24
nearly as many staff and volunteers and
spectators. It all ran like clockwork from finding
your seats to locating all the amenities, food and
drink was readily available and reasonably priced
on both days. Leaving on Saturday was again
very well organised we were back in our hotel bar
within an hour; we chose not to attend any of the
free concerts.
Race day was a nice warm day with the
temperature dropping nicely by late afternoon
when we decided to head for the track at about
3.30. Once again we grabbed a taxi and for £18
we were dropped outside gate 17, within 10 min
we were inside having refreshments prior to
taking to our seats for the driver’s parade lap.
DECEMBER 2012
watch shop, we had a nose and spotted Philippe
Massa in the shop with his manager Martin
Blundell.
I managed to get some photos of both and then
asked Philippe to signed Diane’s FOC
membership card and he was happy to do so,
what a good sport.
It was quite surreal to see all the drivers up so
close. The race got under way at 5pm sharp, and
what a race! I will not attempt to give any kind of
summery but it was full of incidents and very
exciting. Our seats were on the chicane at the
end of the long straight,
it made a great photo
opportunity as the cars
slowed (or not) for the
tight left and right.
Having seen all the race
and leaving with the
crowds we expected to
take considerably longer
to get out, but not the
case we made our way
to the point to hand in
our Fanvision then walked out our gate and about
½ mile away from the track flagged a taxi and
was back at the hotel bar less than two hours
after the race.
Monday we spent around the town walking and

The New F70?
Ferrari F70: the absolute supercar? We don’t
know what its name will be, we are unsure about
technical details, and we haven’t seen any official
photos yet, but one thing is sure: the Ferrari F70
will be the absolute supercar when it will hit the
streets.
According to the latest news, Ferrari’s next Enzolike supercar will be produced in only 399
examples, and its price will be $1 million.
However, a solid bank account will not be
enough: buyers will need to be invited personally
by Ferrari.
The Ferrari F70 will debut in March 2013, at the
Geneva Motor Show. There are not much details
about the Ferrari F70 itself. According to the
latest news, Ferrari’s next supercar will have a
V12 bi-turbo engine, combined with a HY-KERS
system and a four-wheel drive system for a
mouth-watering 1000 HP.

the seven-speed transmission, adding to the
power the engine delivers to it. The batteries will
be charged by an auxiliary generator.
The top-notch transmission is made even more
powerful with a hybrid power unit made out of two
inverters and a special cooling system. The
extreme power of the drive train is made even
more effective by decreasing its weight. It seems
that the Ferrari F70 will be 365kg lighter than its
predecessor. The Italian manufacturer will use
carbon fibre body panels, carbon ceramic brakes
and a simple and lightweight cockpit.
Besides its outstanding performance, the Ferrari
F70 will also have a reduced CO2 emission by 40
percent. Ferrari promises that by this year, it will
make considerable cut from its current 387 g/km
average.
Even if there are many uncertainties, one thing is
sure: when it will enter production, the Ferrari F70
will be the fastest and most advanced super
sports car in the world. McLaren, Bugatti, Porsche
and other manufacturers will have to work a lot to
build a competitor that equals the Ferrari F70.
This extreme power will be brought to the asphalt
through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission
and a high-power traction motor that electrifies
