May/June 2010 The Tibetan Terrier Club of America Protecting and advancing the interests of the Tibetan Terrier breed Volume XXXIII Issue 3 www.ttca-online.org The TT Times TIBETAN TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA President’s Message Ken Edmonds The TTCA National Specialty in Boxborough, MA was a huge success. Many thanks to show chair Jo-Ann Gatzen and her entire team. I can’t think of one “hitch” the entire week. I must say also that the Holiday Inn Boxborough and the entire staff there was as accommodating as any venue I have even seen. We had great classes both in performance and conformation. We have included the judge’s comments as well as the results in this edition of The TT Times. Congratulations to all our members who supported the Specialty. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know and spend some time with our conformation judge and fellow TTCA member, John Ronald. We are fortunate to have one of the outstanding AKC judges as one of our club members. It was very interesting to listen to John reminisce about some of his early days showing TT’s and with Anne Keleman. Anette Ohman planned an outstanding schedule on Tuesday of presentations during the Breeders Education Day. Dr. Martin Katz, PhD, and Dr. Jerold Bell, DVM both have been intimately involved with our Health Committee and breakthrough Dr. Martin Katz, PHD work benefitting TT’s. We had excellent attendance (approximately 50). Our board meeting went “smoothly” and effectively. There were no major or controversial issues, but as always, there is a lot of work that must be done to operate a club like this. We accomplished that. Genetic status can be ascertained through testing offered at the University of Missouri or OFA, or as a consequence of knowing both parents have tested genetically clear.” Our club is financially sound, and we are fortunate to have a treasurer of Gale Mattison’s stature to maintain our finances. The minutes of the Board Meeting, the Annual Meeting and the Treasurer’s Report will be forthcoming in a future edition of the Times. One of the “Hi-lites” of being President is the opportunity to present the board selected “AKC Good Sportsmanship Award” and the annual “Presidents Award” at the Annual Meeting. This year, the Board selected a couple, Carole and Bob Kreis, to receive the Good Sportsmanship Award! Carole and Bob not only have served the club in so many capacities, but have always conducted themselves in their club duties, as well as ringside, with grace, good humor, courtesy and an abiding sense of fair-play and friendship to all. To me, that is the definition of Good Sportsmanship! President Ken Edmonds 945 Clairmont Ave. Decatur, GA 30030 404-373-4605 [email protected] First Vice-President Ron Pankiewicz 1645 Seaks Run Rd. Glen Rock, PA 17327-8484 717-235-6991 [email protected] Second Vice-President Terry Dennison P.O. Box 870908 Wasilla, AK 99687 907-373-7376 [email protected] Corresponding Secretary Lisa Hethcox 3921 Warrior Valley Rd. Altoona, AL 35952 205-589-4947 [email protected] Recording Secretary Michael McLoughlin 281 Silver Hill Lane Stamford, CT 06905 203-329-0643 [email protected] “The President’s Award” this year went to Florence Barczewski as editor of The TT Times and the Journal/Yearbook. Not only is Flossie a good friend, she is the “ideal” that anyone would want in a volunteer organization. The newsletter you are reading now, “The TT Times,” is by far the best we have ever had. The fact that Flossie does this type of work professionally is a stroke of luck the TTCA can be forever thankful. Flossie has also volunteered to edit the Journal/ Yearbook. Both of these jobs require immense time, effort and expertise. Her contribution to the club does not stop there! She is Show Cochair for the 2011 National in Camp Hill, PA! Ask any previous show chair what level of contribution being National Show Co-chair requires! Flossie has always volunteered to help our rescue efforts and continues to do so. I told a story at the annual meeting how I first met Flossie in the 1990’s. I don’t have space for all of it here, but she drove from Delaware to Decatur, Georgia, to pick up a pitiful bedraggled 11-year-old TT I had rescued. She nursed “Winston” back to health and had 5 great years with him. I might add Flossie shows in conformation and performance. “Oh,” and has a full time job as well as does consulting on the side!!!! AKC Delegate Stacey LaForge 87 Pleasantview Ave. New Providence, NJ 07974 908-790-1821 [email protected] Our board continues to seek participation from new people on our Boards and Committees. We feel that it takes a balance of experience and new volunteers to do the club’s work. It is not always easy to accomplish, but that is one of our goals and we try to reach out to the membership to accomplish this. Please let me or any board member know if you would like to volunteer to help the club. Jackie Kaar 22 Raintree Place The Woodlands, TX 77381-5152 713-817-6975 [email protected] Thank you. The Foundation’s new Development Chairman, Vance Lancaster, presented the donation during the TTCA’s annual membership meeting held during the National Specialty in Boxborough, Massachusetts. Lancaster and Spidell are good friends. “I talk to Neil about my dogs all the time and he knows how important they are to me. Neil is a great animal lover and the Foundation’s rescue efforts and advances to improve the breed through medical research and genetic testing appealed to him.” “I told Vance, ‘I just have to trust you on this as I am unfamiliar with the foundation.’ Vance felt very strongly about the value of the Foundation’s work so I made the $15,000 donation because of my relationship with him.” Spidell has asked the Foundation to work to raise funds to match his gift. “Neil loves dogs, but does not own one currently and he has never owned a TT. I hope his matching challenge will encourage those of us who love and own TTs and who benefit directly from the Foundation’s work, to increase our support. Next year I want to be able to go back to Neil and say, ‘Neil, we were able to match your gift.’” Visit the Foundation’s website to make a matching donation online. www.tibetanterriersfoundation.org For more information contact Vance Lancaster, the Foundation’s Development Chaiman at [email protected] Thanks for the memories… Seems to be the catch phrase for this National. I would like to thank everyone including the TTCA Board, especially Ken Edmonds and members, Bay Colony TT Club Board and members, plus all those who entered and visited us in Boxborough. Special thanks to our Judges, John Ronald, Elizabeth Chase, Anette Ohman, Terry Dennison, Dorothy Taylor and our Invitational Judges, Norm Kenney, John George, Kathy Kirk. Thanks to Alice Smith, our Show Secretary; Caryl Crouse, BCTTC President, Obedience and Rally Chairman along with taking care of event reservations; Kate Stanuch, Fundraising and Invitational; Brenda Algar, Hospitality and Memory Walk and, of course, Auctioneer Extraordinaire; Jean Allen, Trophies; Jackie Faust, Vendors, Mary Harkins and Debbie Shuman for raffles and sales; Valerie Weston for her logo; Nina Wagner, Hospitality; Wendyll Behrend, Judges Hospitality and name tag wallets, Gail Toracinta for designing the information book and Invitational Booklet; Sue Carr for Support; Anette Ohman, Breeder’s Education, Margy Pankiewicz, Judge’s Education, Mike McLoughlin, Gerry Gross and Karen Tower for helping with set up and tear down and thanks to everyone who helped in the background. We could not have done it without you. Most of all I have to thank Bob, my better half, for putting up with yet another National! Congratulations for a job well done! Good luck to the 2011 committee, see you all next year. Cheers! Jo-Ann Gatzen TTHWF News The Tibetan Terrier Club of America met on May 17 and filled two Director positions on the Board of the Tibetan Terrier Health and Welfare Foundation. Robert Kreis, who has been a Director and Officer since the organizations' founding, was appointed for another 2-year term. Vance Lancaster was also appointed Director for a 2-year term and will also serve as Development Chairman. Further information regarding the Tibetan Terrier Health and Welfare Foundation can be found at www.tibetanterriersfoundation.org. TTHWF Donations The TTHWF has received generous donations from Lynn Early Julier in honor of All Ce-Gales and in memory of Freckles. Jim and Nancy DeLong in memory of Susan Mechem. Connie Stefanik in memory of “Miracle” – Horizon’s Navajo Warrior. Judith Jorgenson in honor of Oscar. Kelly Louie in honor of Charlie. Deborah Brown Robinson in honor of Oscar. Victoria A. White in memory of “my dear sweet Al-li.” Donations to the TTHWF should be mailed to: Tibetan Terrier Health and Welfare Foundation P.O. Box 1001 Southport, CT 06890. 3 Health Committee News Membership Matters Brenda Brown, Chair Anette Ohman put together a fabulous Breeder Education Day at the National Specialty. There were over 45 attendees! Thank you Anette and everyone who attended and showed support for our researchers, Dr. Martin Katz and Dr. Gerald Bell. Jean Allen, TTCA Membership Chair Thanks also to Linda Nagao for the great information provided at the specialty health table. Dr. Vuillet has accepted two TTs into the NCL stem cell research which the Tibetan Terrier Health & Welfare Foundation partially funded. We wish both of these dogs good luck! The board approved the following statement which the health committee developed regarding new testing: “The TTCA Board of Directors and the Health Committee recommend that all breeding stock have a known genetic status for PLL & NCL prior to being bred. Genetic status can be ascertained through testing offered at the University of Missouri or OFA, or as a consequence of knowing both parents have tested genetically clear.” On page 6, you will find the final list of CHF Breeder Challenge Participants. Thanks to all who pledged your support! We are constantly working to improve the health page and welcome any suggestions. IMPORTANT!! It is time once again to ask you, the members, what you feel are the top five most important health conditions. You can e-mail your choices to me at [email protected] or give me a call. JRD Testing: Help the TTCA Research Canine Health! In order to determine the prevalence of Juvenile Renal Dysplasia (JRD) in our dog population, the Tibetan Terrier Health and Welfare Foundation has provided grant funds to Dr. Mary Whiteley of DOGenes, Inc. These funds have been allocated to help subsidize the testing of 100 AKC registered Tibetan Terriers from each of the four U.S. time zones. Cost of the testing is typically $135.00 per dog. However, under the subsidized grant, testing will be done at a greatly reduced cost of $40 per dog. We need epithelial (cheek swab) samples from dogs suspected of having kidney disease or JRD as well as samples from normal/healthy dogs. This will assist us in learning the incidence of this disease in our TTs. The TTCA will receive periodic tabulated results from DOGenes, Inc. However, individual results are strictly confidential. No information identifying individual dogs or their owner/breeders will be released from DOGenes, Inc. Please help us in our research! To order test kits, please visit: http://www.dogenes.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=80&products_id= 179. For information on JRD in dogs, please visit: http://www.dogenes.com Ebay: Whether you buy or sell, Ebay is providing an easy way to donate to the Tibetan Terrier Health and Welfare Foundation. As a seller, you can choose to donate 10 – 100% of your sales price. As a buyer, you can donate at the time you pay with your PayPal account. You will be sent a receipt for tax purposes. As always, we welcome your comments or suggestions. Brenda J. On April 9, 2010 at the Oshkosh Kennel Club agility trial in Oshkosh Wisconsin, Veronica earned her 100th double Q and thus became the first Tibetan Terrier to achieve a MACH 5 title. To earn a MACH title a dog must earn 20 double qualifiers (qualify in both Excellent B standard and jumpers classes on the same day) along with 750 speed points (one point earned for every second under the standard course time). We were happy to have in the audience several other TT exhibitors who shared our excitement. The Oshkosh MACH ribbon is rumored to be the largest in the Midwest and, as you can see, it is truly one big beautiful trophy! Nica celebrated with her brothers and sisters with ice cream and a special doggy cake while her human friends enjoyed a luscious turtle cheese cake. We hope to be celebrating MACH 6 in the near future. ! !"#$#%&'()**+*)'#%!,,*-.*' /!)01#1/!-02' 034'5677689:;'<=4'>=44?4=@'836'3<A4'B74?;4?'C6'?6:<C4'<C'74<@C' DEF'B4='BGBBH'C6'C34'09>4C<:'04==94='%4<7C3'<:?'I475<=4' &6G:?<C96:'C6'@GBB6=C'!"#$#%&'34<7C3'=4@4<=J3K' ! She was very excited to see the dogs on the east coast as being from Alaska it is limited to the dogs that she can see. She was very happy with both the dogs that she judged and the exhibits she saw shown at the specialty: “I was impressed with the dogs that I judged and also the dogs that I saw at ringside. The quality of animals was impressive and you all should give yourselves a round of applause.” Sweepstakes Judge, Anette Ohman It was a great honor to be invited to judge the Sweepstakes and I was happy to have such a good number of entries. I enjoyed myself very much and was impressed with the all over quality of the Tibetan Terriers entered especially the bitches. There was a good number of them that I could have chosen. In the final line up any of the girls could have been the winner on any given day. I found that most of my entry had nice big feet, good angulation and tail sets. When it came down to Best in Sweeps I felt that the winner of the 15 - 18 month class not only had excellent movement but also great breed type. She was very balanced and had a wonderful profile. She was well presented in a natural coat and had a great attitude. BOS in Sweeps was also a wonderful mover with great attributes of the breed. I very much enjoyed the Veterans. It was nice to see them in such good condition and so happy to be there. It was a hard choice. Rally and Obedience Judge, Elizabeth (Tibby) Chase Thank you to the TTCA for inviting me to judge your National – it is always an honor to officiate at a National Specialty. The obedience/rally entry may have been small, but the teams were wonderful. I was most impressed by the fact so many exhibitors were brand new to the obedience training world. In rally we had 12 entries and 100% qualification-WOW! That seldom happens. I had dogs at all three levels-excellent, advanced and novice. The excellent dog sailed through the exercises and executed even the difficult backup with panache! The advanced dogs were also well prepared even though for many it was their first “off” leash experience–they “shined”! I was particularly impressed by my first place dog – who heeled with attitude – and after a brief “free style” tour of the ring, came right back and finished the course! Regular Classes, John Ronald The Ronalds (John and Kathy) acquired their first TT in 1975 from Anne Keleman of Ti Song Tibetan Terriers. Shortly after that Anne asked if they would show dogs for her. Mr. Ronald explained what an honor this was coming from Anne. The Ronalds began showing Ti Song Mr. Personality who became a BIS winning dog. Mr. Ronald expressed what an honor it was to be asked to judge the 2010 TTCA National Specialty. He was very pleased with the current state of the breed: “In the beginning it was a great breed, but there were problems with consistency in type, shyness, extreme variations in size and less than desirable dentition. Based on the dogs that I saw today, these problems have improved. The breeders have made the breed more consistent and structurally sound. I was very pleased with movement and especially the rear movement which makes the breed move spectacularly. Overall there was good dentition. Coats were in very good condition. I was very impressed by the older dogs in such great condition – taking into account the work involved in keeping a Tibetan Terrier in great condition, this shows how well the dogs are cared for by all of you.” Novice had both experienced and new folks. I would like to compliment my first place in Novice A. She was a junior handler who had been given a breed champion who was bored… and worked him in obedience. The two of them are a real team. In obedience, my Open dog, a lovely working Canadian dog, got slightly distracted on the retrieve and thus NQ’d, but would have scored in the 190’s. The Novice B dog did a lovely job – getting his first leg with a 191. I am sure he has a bright future. Thank you again for inviting me. I hope that more of you will look to the performance arena as an adjunct to your conformation showing. Your breed is intelligent, agile and quick thinking. Engage them in a job they will enjoy and become a performance team! 13 Top 20 Invitational Results 2010 National Auction a Success Many thanks to all who donated and purchased items at the May 19, 2011 auction in Boxborough. Your generous support is crucial and provides funding for the 2011 National Specialty in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Brian Kirk) BITCH I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY by Janine Allen Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today. 15 Breed Standings As of April 30, 2010 Tibetan Terrier Sweepstakes Friday, August 20, 2010 Tibetan Terrier Supported Entry Saturday, August 21 and Sunday, August 22, 2010 both supported by the TTCA with trophies provided by The Greater South Tibetan Terrier Club Greensboro Coliseum Complex Greensboro, North Carolina All part of the 5 day Carolina Cluster, being held Wednesday, August 18 through Sunday, August 22, 2010 Junior showmanship and agility being offered each day Agility is inside in air conditioning GROOMING SPACE WILL BE SET ASIDE FOR TIBETAN TERRIER EXHIBITORS Kennel Club Breed Judge Group Judge Extras Kennel Club Breed Judge Group Judge Extras Wednesday Danville Kennel Club Arley Hussin Arley Hussin Best Bred By in Show Thursday Danville Kennel Club TBA TBA Best Puppy in Show Friday Greater Hickory KC Dr. Alvin Krause Ms. Dawn Hansen Best Puppy in Show Sanctioned B Match TT Sweepstakes Judge: Lisa Hethcox Dinner for Tibetan Terrier Exhibitors Saturday Sunday TT SUPPORTED ENTRY TT SUPPORTED ENTRY Carolina Kennel Club Carolina Kennel Club Dana B. There’s a lot to do in the area beyond showing dogs, both in the nearby state capitol city, Harrisburg, and in the surrounding counties – and it’s a wonderful place for chocoholics as the world famous Hershey’s chocolate is manufactured nearby. A brick walkway honoring dogs that have earned titles in any canine sport will pave the way to the new Purina Event Center and also help support the Canine Health Foundation. We are planning lots of fun canine activities as well as all the normal performance and conformation events, and we will publish a detailed program as soon as we have the official approval from the AKC. A wide range of items are available for purchase. In addition to some beautifully embroidered clothes and luggage, we are offering a wonderful knitted blanket (sample right) that is already in high demand, and would make a great holiday gift! An order form for all the items is on the website and an illustrated catalog will be available in the coming months. The Purina Walk of Champions contains about 4,000 bricks leading to the entrance of the world-class, multimillion-dollar indoor facility, which opens this fall at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, MO. The Event Center will host all-breed dog shows, national specialties, agility and obedience trials. Owners may purchase bricks in their dogs’ honor by providing $100, of which $70 is a tax-deductible donation, to the Canine Health Foundation. For information about purchasing a brick on the Purina Walk of Champions, please visit http://supportcaninehealthfoundation.org/bricks. You may also contact Erica Kitchen, Director of Development, Canine Health Foundation, at 888-682-9696 or [email protected]. A grand opening for the 84,000square-foot Purina Event Center is planned for August. The custommade facility offers numerous amenities, including a 45,000-square-foot main exhibition hall with special padded flooring, a 13,500-square-foot benching and grooming area, and a dog bathing room with stainless-steel tubs and skid-resistant coated concrete flooring. TT Blanket made of hi-bulk acrylic, approx. 63” x 63”. NOTICE: Due to the date change for the World Congress (May 16 instead of May 21), there has been a glitch with making reservations at the hotel for May 16. This issue has been resolved and there is plenty of space available for that date at the Radisson Penn-Harris. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. 18 Traveling With Pets CAREFUL PLANNING AND A FEW BASIC SUPPLIES ARE KEY TO MAKING ANY TRIP A SAFE AND HAPPY ONE FOR YOU AND YOUR PET. BY REBECCA L. RHOADES (Reprinted from AAA World, May/June 2010) THIS SUMMER, millions of Americans will be hitting the roads to spend time with friends and family, vacationing in cities and national parks, and many will be bringing their companion animals with them. According to the American Animal Hospital Association, 67 percent of pet owners vacation or travel with their pets. And while petfriendly hotels and a wide range of supplies make traveling with pets easier, it still requires planning. Stay or Go? While it’s tempting to want to bring your pet with you, some animals aren’t suited to travel. Before heading out on the road with your four-legged friend, ask yourself the following questions: • Is traveling safe for my pet? Honestly evaluate your pet’s health and his ability to travel. • Does my pet like to travel? If your dog runs and hides when you open the car door, consider hiring a pet-sitter and leaving him home. • Is this trip “pet-appropriate?” Some destinations just aren’t animal-friendly. If, after answering these questions, you feel that the trip is in your pet’s best interest, or if it is necessary because you are moving, taking the proper precautions can minimize the risk for your beloved friend. Preparation If your pet’s only experience in a car has been a trip to the vet, you will want to acclimate him to riding in the car a few weeks before your trip. Start with short trips, such as 5- or 10-minute drives. And always remember to end the trip with a positive reward, such as a special treat or fun activity. Slowly lengthen the trips to 30 minutes or one hour. Road Safety We fasten our seatbelts, so why not our pets? For your animal’s safety, always restrain him when traveling. A variety of restraints are available that offer added mobility and provide an option to the traditional metal travel crate. Safety harnesses, which attach to any seatbelt, allow your animal to sit or stand comfortably, while safety gates, made either of metal or mesh, give him mobility in a restricted area. Sturdy, well-ventilated crates are a must for smaller animals, such as cats, that don’t normally travel as much as dogs. RVs offer pet-owners more freedom and interaction with their animals, but it’s still important to petproof these rolling homes. All objects, including food and medicine, must be properly stowed, and all closet and cabinet doors should be securely closed. To avoid injury to loose animals during sudden stops and turns, block off all small areas with baby gates. No matter what type of vehicle you drive, you will need to stop every few hours for a pet pit stop. And always remember to put the leash on your pet before you open the vehicle’s doors. Travel Kit Don’t forget to pack a separate bag for your animal. To avoid an upset stomach, take some of his favorite food, as well as a gallon of water because water characteristics change regionally. Cats can usually travel for 8 to 10 hours without having to use a litterbox, but it never hurts to bring along a disposable litterbox for emergencies and overnight stops. You will also need to bring a pet first-aid kit and some extra towels, in case of accidents. And a favorite toy or pillow will give your animal a sense of familiarity. Keep a current health certificate for your pet handy during interstate travel, because many states require one. Videos of the 2010 TTCA National Specialty can be ordered from Show Dog Video Pros.com.
