Registration to programs is first offered to seniors (60+) of the Town of Weymouth
and non-resident official volunteers. If additional space is available, non-residents
are welcome to participate. Transportation and Outreach Services are solely offered
to residents of the Town of Weymouth.

the temperature is predicted to be 85 degrees or more, all programs in the gym are cancelled. If

Boston Lighthouse
August 7 is National Lighthouse Day, a yearly celebration
that dates back to 1789 when Congress approved an Act for
the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons,
buoys and public piers.
U.S. Lighthouse history dates back to the 1700s when the
first lighthouse was built in Boston on Little Brewster
Island in 1716. Three years later, a cannon was placed near
Boston Light and used as the first fog signal. The cannon
would be constantly fired to warn ships away from the
rocky ledges. The original lighthouse was destroyed during
the Revolutionary War and a new one was built in 1783.
Boston Light is the only lighthouse to still be actively
staffed by the U.S. Coast Guard.

facilities. Suggested donation within town is $6

The Courtesy Coach provides transportation to
patients who need a ride to an appointment at South
Shore Hospital or to a program or service directly
affiliated with South Shore Hospital. The Coach
does not transport patients to physicians’ offices.

SO LONG, ANDREA—BEST WISHES FOR A
HEALTHY, HAPPY RETIREMENT!
It is with great regret that we are losing our
beloved bus driver, Andrea Hamilton, to
retirement. All of us who know Andrea are
saddened by her departure, but happy for her, at
the same time, that now she will get to enjoy her
free time to do whatever pleases her. Andrea came
to Elder Services in 2007 with lots of experience,
having driven “big rigs” and buses for many years.
She not only had an excellent driving record and
could maneuver the bus anywhere, she was kind
and fun-loving with all the seniors who rode with
her for grocery shopping, medical and social trips.
We wish her a wonderful, well-deserved
retirement, and maybe she will now have the time
to become a participant here at some of our
activities, and we’ll still get to enjoy her sense of
humor and terrific smile!

THANK YOU
to the staff and Parent Council of the Wessagusset School for the delicious luncheon the senior pen pals
were invited to in June. After lunch, seniors and students met for the first time after corresponding
during the school year. The students entertained their pen pals, and everyone had a great time making
ice cream sundaes together and getting to know each other.
John Peruzzi took photos of the pen pals once again, and another successful year ended happily for
all! Thank you to all the participants - I hope you will continue with the program next year.

of the Whipple Center.
June was certainly the party month as the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held at
Lantana. Many of our dedicated volunteers were honored with a sincere “thank you” from Director Sue
Barnes, and me. Everyone was treated to a turkey dinner and the volunteers each received a favor.
Our knowledgeable guest speaker was Lyn Frano, the Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator for the
Town of Weymouth. She shared some interesting words of wisdom about keeping prescription drugs
secured in your home and proper disposal of unused medicines.
The Friends of the Council on Aging generously donated the funds to purchase the gifts for the
volunteers. I’m happy that much positive feedback was received for both the lunch and the gift. Thank
you to our loyal volunteers and everyone who helped make the event so enjoyable.
Our sincere sympathy to volunteer, Kay Walsh, on the recent loss of her dear brother,
Charles Mullin. Our sincere condolences are also offered to Kay Puglisi on the loss of her husband,
Roger after a long illness.

Hurricane season is upon us and Outreach would like to share some recommendations for our clients
safety, in order to ensure they have a proper emergency kit in place in case a storm were to hit. In the
past century, 75% of the storms in Massachusetts have occurred in August and September.
Massachusetts lies in the unenviable position of receiving all three “Hurricane Threats”, depending
upon the track and landfall location: 1) Coastal inundation due to storm surge 2) Widespread inland
river flooding and 3) Widespread wind damage far inland.
Here is a list of items to keep in an emergency kit in the event a storm hits us:

Bottled water (1 gallon per person/per day for 3 days)

Canned goods and nonperishable foods, particularly those that do not need cooking:

Canned meats and fish
Canned fruits and vegetables
Canned soups and puddings
Canned fruit juices
Dried fruit and nuts
Bread, cookies and crackers
Peanut butter and jelly
Coffee and tea
Manual can opener


















Radio (battery-powered or hand crank), NOAA Weather Radio and extra batteries
Flashlight or lantern, with extra batteries
First aid kit
Diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, if needed
Pet food, supplies, tag, crates, if needed
Prescription medications (2-week supply)
Extra eyeglasses, contact lenses, and dentures
Extra batteries for hearing aids, wheelchairs, or other medical equipment,
Medical oxygen tanks
Whistle to signal for help
Moist towelettes, garbage bags, soap, sanitizer, and other personal hygiene items
 Copies of important documents and IDs

