Here are some highlights. eugenealex AND THE MATCH: Despite a demanding job, commitments to other community organizations, and a family of his own, Eugene Hawkins was determined to serve as a positive role model to a teenage boy. He met his Little, Alex, in April 2010. Through common interests in sports, cars, and community service, Eugene hoped to help Alex confront the adversity of his illness, sickle cell disease, while improving his attitude toward school. THE OUTCOME: Eugene and Alex’s common interests provided a springboard for a strong relationship. “Seeing his confidence grow has been priceless,” Eugene said. Alex’s mother, Myriam, credits the relationship with helping Alex develop not only his interests but also his dedication to school. “The most obvious effect of Eugene’s mentoring has been the dramatic change in Alex’s academic life. Thanks to Eugene’s persistence and encouragement, my son is now a freshman at Indiana State University.” christine madison AND THE MATCH: Madison was nine years old and struggling with self-esteem when she was matched with her Big Sister, Christine Peacock. Madison’s mother enrolled Madison in the program in the hope that it would help develop her confidence. Six months later, Christine and Madison went on their first outing while wearing matching BBBSCI T-shirts. Madison recalled, “I was so excited to tell everyone that we were sisters!” THE OUTCOME: After a few months together, Christine began to see the ways she was making an impact on Madison’s life. Madison’s mother also noticed it, particularly in the way Madison’s relationships with her peers were improving. In 2011, Christine and Madison enrolled in SMART (Supportive Mentoring through ART), a partnership between BBBSCI and the Indianapolis Art Center. It served to further develop Madison’s confidence. “This program has allowed Madison to express her creativity and to be involved in something upon which she can build a career in the future,” Christine said. david frances AND maureen THE MATCH: Little Sister Frances was matched with Big Couple David Feinberg and Maureen Keller in 2006. Prior to their match, Frances had struggled with a tumultuous childhood that involved time away from school and multiple moves through homeless shelters. None of the parties quite knew what to expect from the match, but everyone was hopeful they would be able to develop a friendship based on trust and encouragement. THE OUTCOME: Seven years later, in spite of continued instability in her home life, Frances maintained a 3.8 grade point average. As a junior at Southport High School, she was admitted into the National Honor Society, and Maureen and David took her on college visits in hopes of helping her pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. “Ever since we’ve been matched, Maureen and David have done all that they can to lead me toward a successful future,” Frances said. Today, Frances is attending Indiana University, where she majors in special education. A BIG challenge Clearly, mentoring works. The challenge for the future is fielding enough volunteers to make it work for all of the children who need it. demand A GROWING 90 80 40 78 14 28 24 41 29 03 25 17 35 19 01 21 21 26 18 02 22 16 05 04 31 36 20 08 34 50 60 68 54 56 07 27 39 37 59 Highlighted = 25+ youth waiting in a zip code This map illustrates the huge need for mentors throughout Marion County. We’re tackling this challenge head on in 2015—and we need your help. There are also children in Hamilton and Johnson Counties who are waiting for mentors. opportunity A BIG We need more mentors. We call them Bigs. Being a Big is a life-changing opportunity. It’s a way to get personally involved in making a lasting impact on a child’s life. BIG benefits Being a Big—whether a Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Couple, or Big Friend—doesn’t just change the child’s life. It changes your life, too. It can also be the way you change the world. By simply showing up and showing that you care, you won’t only help a child. You’ll help the whole community. PLANNING FOR A brighter future Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana has a strategic plan in place to make 2015 a year of unprecedented success. It involves five goals. 1. engage MORE BIGS 1. engage MORE BIGS The demand for mentors is high. To attract more Bigs, we will: • Expand the Big Couple option to include non-romantic pairings, Big Friends. • Engage current Bigs as ambassadors through an outreach committee and social events. • Establish a volunteer pipeline by providing introductory volunteer experiences. • Execute strategies that intentionally diversify our volunteer base. 2. advance THE FIELD OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORING 2. advance THE FIELD OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORING The BBBS program has been helping youth for more than 100 years nationally and 40 years locally for a reason—it works. Still, we strive to maximize our impact and address the changing needs of our community by: • I mplementing the Six Sigma Intentionality Project, a local collaboration with Cummins Inc., that will provide Bigs with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities to maximize outcomes for their Littles. • Advancing youth mentoring research by participating in national studies. • Evaluating local retention and outcome results to drive future program strategies. 3. collaborate FOR COLLECTIVE IMPACT 3. collaborate FOR COLLECTIVE IMPACT Our program impact extends beyond the bond between one mentor and one child. We also believe that it takes all of us to build the best community. To maximize impact for youth, we will: •A ctively partner with others to connect families and matches with valuable resources and tackle community-wide challenges together. •E xpand service and partnerships in neighborhoods of highest demand, starting with 46201, 46218, 46226, and 46235. • I ncrease organizational competency and efforts to address critical community issues such as education, juvenile justice, and social/emotional/physical wellness. 4.harness the power OF GIVING 4.harness the power OF GIVING Investing in strategies to secure sustainable funding is critical to our future. We are connecting more donors to our mission by: • Providing more strategic and mission-focused donor opportunities. • Enhancing efforts to engage new donors and reconnect with past supporters. •D eepening donor relationships through accountability, communication, and engagement opportunities. 5.develop leadership WITHIN OUR ORGANIZATION AND BEYOND 5.develop leadership WITHIN OUR ORGANIZATION AND BEYOND Consistent with our mission and program standards, BBBSCI believes that we have a responsibility to set high expectations and develop the potential of our team. Our people are our greatest assets, and as such, we will: • Attract and engage a diverse and talented Board of Directors and staff team. •P rovide clear professional development paths and expectations for staff retention and growth. •S trive always to be a leading, educational, and life-changing place to work, volunteer, and give.
