BEAR NECESSITIES: CAL'S TOP STORYLINES ROTATION ORDER Cal will begin the meet on bars and rotate in Olympic order from bars to beam, floor and then vault. LAST TIME OUT The Golden Bears posted their highest score in a season opener in program history, 195.575, en route to a victory over No. 8 Stanford (19.4.800), Sacramento State (194.325), UC Davis (192.700) and San Jose State (191.800) at the NorCal Classic hosted by San Jose State. The win marked the second consecutive season the Bears won the event. Toni-Ann Williams’ sophomore campaign opened with her claiming the 31st event title of her career with a 9.8 5 on vault, and Jessica Howe finished in the top three in two events, including a runner-up finish on floor with a career-high 9.875. HOWE SWEET IT IS Junior Jessica Howe is back to full strength this season after competing in just four meets in 2015. The upperclassman and former elite gymnast was one of Cal’s leading all-arounders in her freshman season in 2014, but was sidelined for most of last season to recover from wrist surgery. Howe BY THE NUMBERS 2-2 The Bears’ combined regularseason record over the Sooners and Pioneers. Cal is 2-1 over Oklahoma in regular-season meetings, and 0-1 against TWU. 14 Cal opened the season ranked 14th in the country for the second consecutive year. Cal’s No. 14 rankings in 2015 and 2016 are the program’s best preseason rankings ever, up from No. 21 in 2004. 5 Five Pac-12 teams rank among the nation’s top 12 teams. 2016 CALIFORNIA WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS MEET NOTES MEET 2: NO. 4 OKLAHOMA, TWU returned for the last few meets of the season, competing only on beam with a routine that did not require her to use her hands, but is healthy and competing on bars, beam and floor this season. ROAD TO RIO Already the first gymnast to represent Jamaica in international competition, sophomore Toni-Ann Williams is aiming to be the first Jamaican gymnast to compete in Rio at the upcoming Olympics. The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year competed at the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland in October, and was selected by her country’s committee to fulfill the lone female berth to represent Jamaica at the Olympic Test Event this April in order to earn qualification for a spot in Rio. HO OUT FOR SEASON Cal will be without the services of junior Dana Ho this season, as Ho suffered an ACL injury before the first meet of the season. NEXT ROTATION Cal will wrap up the last of its three season-opening road trips on Sunday, Jan. 24 at Bay Area rival Stanford in a triangular meet with San Jose State. Meet time is set for 2 p.m. PAC-12 PREDICTIONS Coaches around the conference have predicted that the Bears will finish fifth in the Pac-12 this season. Utah was selected to repeat as the conference champion for the third year in a row. The exact breakdown of points is as follows: 1. Utah (6 first-place votes) - 49 points 2. UCLA - 43 points 3. Stanford (1) - 39 points 4. Oregon State - 30 California - 24 6. Arizona - 21 7. Washington - 13 8. Arizona State - 7 PRESEASON PROWESS California opens the season at a program-high No. 14 in the Road To Nationals Preseason Coaches’ Poll for the second consecutive season. This is the third consecutive season the Bears have been ranked to open the season, and Cal’s ranking of No. 14 tops the previous program-high preseason ranking of No. 21 set in 2004. Michigan State, who Cal hosts in the March 4 quad meet, checked in just outside of the Top 25 at No. 26 in the rankings. Every opponent Cal will face in 2016 claimed a team or individual berth to 2015 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Regionals competition. Additionally, six of the Pac-12’s eight gymnastics programs also rank in the top 25 in the preseason rankings. SALUTING YOU NOW This year’s Cal lineup once again includes four new faces -- Sofie Seilnacht, Sylvie Seilnacht, Chelsea Shu and Emily Howe. The Seilnachts, twin sisters from Fremont, Calif., will make immediate contributions on beam. Shu is recovering from an injury but is also expected to contribute heavily, especially on bars, and Howe, who’s the younger sister of junior Jessica Howe, is rehabbing from surgery. FAMILIAR FACES California returns nearly every routine from the 2015 season despite graduating three gymnasts. Senior Serena Leong, who was injured early last season, makes her return to the competitive lineup, as well as junior Jessica Howe, who spent most of 2015 rehabbing from wrist surgery. Cal’s All-Pac-12 all-around duo, junior Charlie Owens and freshman Toni-Ann Williams, both return for the Bears, as well as the rest of a highly talented junior class that includes Dana Ho, Desiree Palomares, Amber Takara and Zoe Draghi. TALENTED TWOSOME IN 2017 Cal’s latest acquisitions include two talented and versatile incoming freshmen. Cassidy Keelen, out of Lucas, Texas, and Rachael Mastrangelo, from Waxhaw, N.C., signed NLIs to join the Bears in 2016-17. Keelen is an all-arounder from Texas Dreams and a member of the 2015 Junior Olympic National Team who is known for her artistry and charisma. Mastrangelo, who trains with Southeastern Gymnastics Club, is a powerful and dynamic gymnast expected to contribute immediately on vault and floor.
