Akasha spa to open in Jerusalem
Piero Lissoni-designed retreat to open at Mamilla Hotel
A 10,764sq ft (1,000sq m) spa designed by the
Milan-based interior architect Piero Lissoni
is to open at the end of August 2010 at the
Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem, Israel.
Called the Akasha Wellbeing Retreat & Spa
and located less than a mile from Jerusalem’s
Old City walls, the facility has been created as a
core component of the hotel’s experience.
The spa’s design incorporates feng shui
principles to create a warm and relaxed
atmosphere. One of the standout features is a
music meditation room, which mixes changing
sounds, lights and images that are aligned with
the elements, or forces, of feng shui. Other
facilities include watsu pools, hammams, an
organic bar and a Technogym-equipped gym.
Treatments integrate Western and Eastern
practices with natural healing techniques and
are conducted under the guidance of Akasha’s
director, Guy Nadler. A range of tailored,
individual programmes are also offered while
therapies use Pevonia products.
Mamilla Hotel is part of the Alrov Luxury
Hotels collection, a subsidiary of the Tel Avivbased real estate company Alrov. Details:

Mustapha’s Place hotel and bar on the east
coast of Zanzibar in east Africa has launched a
mini-spa with a difference.
The US$750 (£491, %580) Casuarina Spa is
located above the hotel among the casuarina

the repurposed space features a new staircase
and window and is very intimate, covering a
total area of 64.5sq ft (6sq m).
With one treatment room and one massage
bed, spa furniture was manufactured by local
Zanzibari carpenters, led by carpenter Ali
Mohamed Hamada, who was responsible for
the redesign. Treatments include a range of
aromatherapy massages and body scrubs.
There are now plans to add flooring to
another roofed space of 215sq ft (20sq m) to

Work begins on ‘sunken’ hotel
Songjiang-based property to be built in a water-filled quarry
Construction work has begun on the Songjiang
Hotel, a ‘sunken hotel’ being created in a 328ft
(100m)-deep water-filled quarry in Songjiang
close to Shanghai, China.
Situated inside the Shanghai Sheshan National Holiday Resort in the Sheshan Mountain
area of Songjiang, the 21-floor hotel will have
two underwater levels, 17 floors between the
surface of the water and ground-level and two
floors above ground-level.
Design and engineering consultancy Atkins
won a competition in 2006 to design the hotel,
which is expected to be completed by the end
of 2010. According to lead architect Martin
Jochman, the entire hotel concept will revolve
around water and nature-based wellness and
spa facilities. There will also be a large spa offering on the water level of the property.
The underwater floors will house a restaurant
and bedrooms facing an aquarium, while the
lowest level will contain a leisure complex
offering a swimming pool and water sports.
Designer Atkins has made sustainability key
to the hotel’s construction, including generating
electricity and heating from the site’s geothermal energy. A naturally-lit internal atrium will
incorporate the existing rockface of the quarry.

10 Minute Manicure expands
A Lulur Ritual taking place within a SpaClub
American brand 10 Minute Manicure is to
extend its reach away from the airport and into
towns and cities across the US.
The franchise model – which offers
manicures on a no-appointment-necessary
basis – will be available for sites across the US.
The model for the company changed as a

CEG launches £250m
resort consultation
Commercial Estates Group (CEG) has begun a
second public consultation over proposals for a
£250m (%294m, US$379m) resort development
at Carlyon Bay, Cornwall, UK.
Facilities planned as part of The Beach
include holiday homes, a large spa, a gym,
swimming pools and tennis courts, as well as
restaurants and a watersports centre.
The developer said it had considered feedback received at a previous consultation held
in October last year, with plans now featuring a
“more Cornish design” and a larger beach area.
Planning permission for The Beach was
initially approved in 1991, with sea defences
constructed to protect workers. However, the
scheme ran into delays in 2007 after plans for
upgraded defences were refused.
CEG has put forward a more sustainable
development, which includes 12 key objectives
agreed with the local authority to ensure the
scheme can move forward.
Among the new plans are efforts to establish
a car-free environment; an emphasis on cycling
and walking; ‘living roofs’ to absorb rainwater
and provide wildlife habitats and expansive
open spaces. Details: www.ceg.co.uk
Six Senses intends to achieve a net zero carbon footprint for Soneva Fushi by 2012
Soneva Fushi to boost solar power system
Following a successful eight month trial period
of operation, Six Senses is to quadruple the size
of its solar power system at its flagship Soneva
Fushi resort in the Maldives.
Already said to be the largest renewable
energy plant currently operated in the Maldives,
the 70kW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant
system, once quadrupled in size, will provide
almost half of the resort’s electricity.
Sonu Shivdasani, CEO and chair of Six
Senses, said: “This is a significant first step in
achieving our commitment of a net zero carbon
footprint for Soneva Fushi by 2012 as well as
supporting the carbon reduction goals of the
Maldives government. We are hoping that our
example will lead other resorts to pursue solar
PV as a low cost, clean energy alternative.”
The ‘grid parity’ system was fabricated in an
easy-to-assemble kit form by Beck Electric of
Germany. The entire system was then shipped
to the Maldives and installed in two weeks by
a team of 10 local workers. The panels have
been discreetly assembled in the middle of the
island’s jungle. Details: www.sixsenses.com
