Introduction to APTCO’s Expandable Polystyrene Box
What is EPS (Expandable Polystyrene)?
Expandable Polystyrene is a rigid cellular plastic that was developed for food
containers and general packaging applications. The raw material can be expanded to
a desired density for the specific application required. The designed advantages of
EPS are: EPS is inert, EPS is safe for food contact, EPS does not support bacterial
growth, EPS is resistant to moisture, EPS is recyclable, EPS has excellent insulation
properties, EPS can be processed to be strong enough to do the job and therefore
there can be a considerable weight savings over alternatives. There are many types
of EPS that are available because of the great range of applications for EPS. APTCO
is committed to select the best material for this application and to work with our
suppliers to improve the material for a better quality final product.
How is EPS expanded?
EPS arrives at APTCO as small beads in 2,205 lb containers. When controlled heat is
applied to the beads they expand to the required density. How much and how long
heat is applied determines the final density of the expanded beads. APTCO takes
special care in this part of the process to try and make every bead the same density
by controlling the process and minimizing variation in the process. If this is not done
properly heavy boxes and light boxes will result from the same mold. APTCO knows
that its customers count on every box to be capable to handle full load of three
pallets of grapes, so we precisely control the weight of the box .
Does APTCO make a heavy density box?
All APTCO boxes are made with the same density material. This material is formulated and expanded to make a box strong enough for three pallet high configuration
in cold storage for the 7L and ME boxes. Our boxes have a successful proven history
for three high configuration in cold storage. Therefore compare our standard box to
our competitors heavy density box for pricing purposes. We do not have a light density box.
How is EPS molded?
After EPS is expanded it is dried and stabilized in silos. APTCO also takes care to
control this process to minimize variation and deliver a consistently aged bead to
the molding machine. The molding process has four parts, filling the mold with
expanded beads, heating and fusing the beads into one solid mass, cooling the mass
into a rigid part and ejecting the part. APTCO has all single cavity molds to produce
the most consistent part. Multi cavity molds produce more parts but sacrifice
consistency. A multi cavity mold does not fill the same amount in each cavity, the
steam cooking process can not be identical for each cavity, and the cooling of the
mold will be slightly different for each cavity. All APTCO molds are the same and all
molding machines are the identical. The result of minimizing variation throughout
the process is a consistent part from mold to mold, cycle to cycle, day to day and
month to month.

What are the advantages of APTCO’s box design?
When you remove the APTCO lid, push in slightly on the bottom under the lid lock
and lift the lid off. The lid lock will keep the lid on in transit and during movement
around your cold storage. The step on the side helps lock the lid on but does not
overstress the lid lock during lid removal. The high step on the inside of the bottom
of the box prevents crushing of grapes in the seam when the lid is installed.
High lip inside
Stepped side panel to help lock lid.
Positive lid lock
Why is an APTCO box less expensive to use?
Every part of the molding process has been designed to make a consistently strong
box. APTCO’s customer’s report less wastage in the field from mishandling damage.
The new APTCO lid design is stronger, easier to use and does not damage grapes
when the lid is put on. The box was designed to stack 10 layers per pallet, three
pallets high in cold storage. This reduces your cold storage needs. The consistent
product results in straight vertical columns in cold storage that have more safety
factor than competitor’s boxes.
What are the special considerations regarding the storing and use of EPS
boxes?
EPS is highly flammable and will produce thick black smoke when burned. It is
difficult to extinguish while burning because of its cellular nature entraping oxygen.
Please review MSDS sheet enclosed for more information regarding EPS.
Precautions that are listed in the APTCO manual must be followed or catastrophic
failure of the box may result. The box is designed to be used in cold storage up to
three pallets high but damage to the box or improper stacking could cause failure
of the box resulting in a pallet column toppling. APTCO will stand behind our box
but not if it is used improperly.
Does APTCO recycle EPS?
APTCO has the equipment to recycle the scrap from APTCO and our competitors.
This scrap is recycled and does not go to the dump. Any EPS can be recycled. However construction grade EPS material should not be recycled at APTCO because the
flame retardant additive is incompatible with food packaging applications.

Three Pallet High Stacking in Cold Storage
What are some considerations in the pallet design for stacking three high?
The pallet must be made of utility grade or better of fir, pine or spruce wood.
The pallet must have sufficient stringers in the proper location to support the walls
of the foam box.
The pallet must transfer the load properly to the layer of boxes below the pallet.
The 7L pallet in this manual must be laid out as shown. If the boxes are laid out
backwards the stringers will not match the walls of the box.
Never cross stack boxes. Always register stack boxes to keep the load on the walls
of the box.
Immediately repair damage to pallets and boxes caused by forklift accidents.
The pallet designs in this manual have a proven successfull history stacking three
pallets high in cold storage.

EPS Storage in the Field
EPS boxes should not remain in the sun for more than a few days.
APTCO stores the boxes in blocks wrapped in ultraviolet protecting
black plastic to prevent sun damage, dirt contamination and wind
damage
The size of the blocks may vary due to location size. The layout of
the blocks is designed to limit the risk of fire loss. There will be
fire breaks to allow fire truck access to blocks.
There is a code painted on the block, it consists of five lines. The
first line is when the block is started which is also the day the box
is produced. The box should be at least ten days old before it is
used in cold storage. The second line is when the block is finished.
The third line is when the block is wrapped. The box is wet when
it is produced and we wrap it after the moisture has evaporated.
The fourth line is the owner of the box and the type of box. The
last line is the number of bundles in the block and the block number at this location.

Similarity
APTCO 7L is similar to:
Styrotek STH
Agri-cel DL
APTCO ME is similar to:
Styrotek SB
Agri-cel LM
However, boxes will vary dimensionally between competitors
resulting in similar but not equivalent boxes. Mixing of boxes
within a pallet will result in uneven loading on boxes with
unpredictable results.
Do not mix APTCO and competitors’ boxes on a pallet.
Do not use a box that has aged less than 10 days since
manufactured.

Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for several minutes. Remove larger particulates from the eye as one would any foreign object.
Get medical attention if eye irritation persists or particulates are difficult to remove from the eye.
Skin:
Wash skin with plenty of soap and water for several minutes. Get medical attention if skin irritation develops or persists.
Ingestion:
If more than several mouthfuls of this material are swallowed, give two glasses of water (16 oz.). Get medical attention.
Inhalation:
If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, clear person's airway and give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult,
qualified medical personnel may administer oxygen. Get medical attention immediately.
Other Instructions:
None.

Flash Point (degrees C):
-40
(-40 F) CC for Pentane
Flammable Limits % (Lower-Upper):
Lower: 1.5 for Pentane
Upper: 7.8 for Pentane
Recommended Fire Extinguishing Agents And Special Procedures:
Water may be ineffective on flames but should be used to cool fire-exposed containers and provide protection for persons
attempting to stop the leak. Use water spray, dry chemical, foam or carbon dioxide to extinguish flames.
Unusual or Explosive Hazards:
Danger! Extremely flammable materials may release vapors that travel long distances, ignite, and flash back. Containers may
explode in a fire. Do not expose to heat, sparks, flame, static, or other sources of ignition. When handling, use non-sparking
tool, ground and bond all containers.
Explosive air-vapor mixtures may form. Fire gives off dense black smoke and acid gasses. Electrostatic discharge can be a
source of ignition due to accumulated pentane vapors exceeding the L.E.L. (lower explosive limit) of 1.5% (15,000 ppm).
Pentane vapors may be emitted from newly opened containers or when the product is heated. If ignited, there could be a very
high rate of flame propagation.
"NO SMOKING - NO MATCHES - NO LIGHTERS - NO WELDING" rules should be enforced.
Special Protective Equipment for Firefighters:
Wear full protective clothing and positive pressure breathing apparatus.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES (Transportation Spills: CHEMTREC (800)424-9300)
Procedures in Case of Accidental Release, Breakage or Leakage:
Avoid the generation of dust clouds. Place in appropriate containers for disposal or recycle. Avoid breathing dust. Pressure
demand air supplied respirators should always be worn when the airborne concentration of the contaminant or oxygen is
unknown. Otherwise, wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment as appropriate for the potential
exposure hazard. Wear gloves, goggles, and protective clothing to avoid contact with eyes, skin, or clothing. Use vacuuming
or sweeping compound for clean-up. Do not dry sweep or use methods which increase dusting. Prevent entry into sewers and
waterways.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Precautions to be Taken in
Handling:
Use spark-proof tools. Material may be at elevated temperatures and/or pressures. Exercise care when opening bleeders
and sampling ports.
Storage:
Ground and bond shipping container, transfer line, and receiving container. Keep away from heat, sparks, flame, and other
sources of ignition.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
Protective Equipment (Type)
Eye/Face Protection:
Avoid eye contact. Chemical type goggles should be worn. Do not wear contact lenses.
Skin Protection:
Workers should wash exposed skin several times daily with soap and water. Soiled work clothing should be laundered or
dry-cleaned.
Respiratory Protection:
Airborne concentrations should be kept to lowest levels possible. If vapor, mist or dust is generated and the occupational
exposure limit of the product, or any component of the product, is exceeded, use appropriate NIOSH or MSHA approved air
purifying or air supplied respirator after determining the airborne concentration of the contaminant. Air supplied respirators
should always be worn when airborne concentration of the contaminant or oxygen content is unknown.
Ventilation:
Use explosion-proof equipment to maintain adequate ventilation to meet occupational exposure limits, if applicable (see
below), prevent accumulation of explosive air-gas mixtures, and avoid significant oxygen displacement. Oxygen levels should
be at least 19.5% in confined spaces or other work areas (OSHA value).
Exposure Limit for the Total Product:
None established for product; refer to Section 2 for component exposure limits.

General Fire Hazards
Dangerous fire and explosion risk. Vigorously supports combustion. When heated to decomposition, product
emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel along the ground to some
distant source of ignition and flash back. Move containers from the fire area if this can be done without risk.
Explosion Hazards
Vapors are heavier than air and may travel along the ground to some distant source of ignition and flash back.
Hazardous Combustion Products
Styrene, oxides of carbon, and other toxic gases at elevated temperatures.
Extinguishing Media
Dry chemical, foam, carbon dioxide, water fog or water spray. Use water to cool fire-exposed containers and to
protect personnel.
Fire Fighting Equipment/Instructions
Wear full set of protective equipment including positive pressure breathing apparatus, chemical goggles and
gloves.
Structural firefighter's protective clothing will only provide limited protection
Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until
well after the fire is out. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible,
withdraw from area and let fire burn. ALWAYS stay away from containers engulfed in fire. Prevent runoff from
entering waterways, drains and sewers.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
Evacuation Procedures
Isolate area. Keep unnecessary personnel away.
Small Spills
Spilled product may create a dangerous slipping hazard. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Consider isolating the
spill or leak area immediately until ambient air sampling results indicate that the pentane vapor concentration is
below the flammable range. Use appropriate non-sparking tools to put the spilled solid in an appropriate waste
disposal container.
Large Spills
Flammable vapors are released from spills. Use water spray curtain to divert vapor drift. Eliminate all sources of
ignition. Consider evacuating the spill or leak area immediately until ambient air sampling results indicate that the
pentane vapor concentration is below the flammable range. Prevent entry into sewers, basements, or confined
areas; dike if needed.
Special Procedures
Wear appropriate protective equipment and clothing during clean-up. (See Section 8)
Contact local police/emergency services and appropriate emergency telephone numbers provided in Section 1.
Ensure statutory and regulatory reporting requirements in the applicable jurisdiction are met.
Persons not wearing appropriate protective equipment should be excluded from area of spill until clean-up has
been completed.
Damaged or Suspect Damaged Containers
If EPS containers are damaged or suspected to have been damaged during transit, open the truck trailer door
slowly and ventilate for 15 minutes. Never permit smoking. Test the atmosphere to ensure the air is free of
pentane before entering.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling Procedures
Keep this product from heat, sparks, lit cigarettes, static electricity discharges, or open flame. Ground all
equipment containing material. Do not breathe dusts or vapors from this material. Keep away from incompatibles
such as oxidizing agents, and organic materials. Slipping hazard.
After opening the container in a well ventilated area, allow 15 minutes for the accumulated pentane to dissipate.
Partially opened containers represent a potentially serious hazard because the insides of the container permit a
space for the pentane to accumulate. When partially filled containers have to be used, direct a stream of air into
the container for 15 minutes after opening to ensure no accumulation of pentane in the container.
Maintain sufficient air circulation and ventilation to prevent flammable concentrations from forming, especially in
low-lying areas.
Incompatibility
Not resistant to oxidizing agents, dissolves in organic solvents.
Storage Procedures
Flammable materials should be stored in a separate safety storage cabinet or room. Keep this product from heat,
sparks, lit cigarettes, static electricity discharges, or open flame. Keep the container tightly closed and in a cool,
well-ventilated place. Ground all equipment containing material. A refrigerated room would be preferable for
materials with a flash point lower than 37.8ºC (100ºF).
For additional handing and storage information, refer to the NOVA Chemicals Expandable Polystyrene Storage
and Handling Safety Guide.

5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
Ignition Temperature – AIT (degrees C):
260 (500 F) for Pentane
471 (880 F) by ASTM D-1929 Expanded polystyrene
Flash Point (degrees C):
-40 (-40 F) CC for Pentane
Flammable Limits % (Lower-Upper):
Lower: 1.5 for Pentane
Upper: 7.8 for Pentane
Recommended Fire Extinguishing Agents And Special Procedures:
Water may be ineffective on flames but should be used to cool fire-exposed
containers and provide protection for persons attempting to stop the leak.
Use water spray, dry chemical, foam or carbon dioxide to extinguish flames.
Unusual or Explosive Hazards:
Danger! Extremely flammable materials may release vapors that travel long
distances, ignite, and flash back, Containers may explode in a fire. Do not
expose to heat, sparks, flame, static, or other sources of ignition. When
handling, use non-sparking tool, ground and bond all containers.
Explosive air-vapor mixtures may form. Fire gives off dense black smoke
and acid gasses. Electrostatic discharge can be a source of ignition due to
accumulated pentane vapors exceeding the L.E.L. (lower explosive limit) of
1.5% (15,000 ppm). Pentane vapors may be emitted from newly opened
containers or when the product is heated. If ignited, there could be a very high
rate of flame propagation.
“NO SMOKING – NO MATCHES – NO LIGHTERS – NO WELDING” rules
should be enforced.
Special Protective Equipment for Firefighters:
Wear full protective clothing and positive pressure breathing apparatus.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES (Transportation Spills)
Procedures in Case of Accidental Release, Breakage or Leakage:
Avoid the generation of dust clouds. Place in appropriate containers for disposal or
recycle. Avoid breathing dust. Pressure demand air supplied respirators should
always be worn when the airborne concentration of the contaminant or oxygen is
unknown. Otherwise, wear respiratory protection and other personal protective
equipment as appropriate for the potential exposure hazard. Wear gloves, goggles,
and protective clothing to avoid contact with eyes, skin, or clothing. Use

vacuuming or sweeping compound for clean-up. Do not dry sweep or use methods
which increase dusting. Prevent entry into sewers and waterways.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Precautions to be Taken in
Handling:
Use spark-proof tools. Materials may be at elevated temperatures and/or pressures.
Exercise care when opening bleeders and sampling ports.
Storage:
Ground and bond shipping container, transfer line, and receiving container. Keep
away from heat, sparks, flame, and other sources of ignition.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/ PERSONAL PROTECTION
Protective Equipment (Type)
Eye/Face Protection:
Avoid eye contact. Chemical type goggles should be worn. Do not wear contact
lenses.
Skin Protection:
Workers should wash exposed skin several times daily with soap and water. Soiled
work clothing should be laundered or dry-cleaned.
Respiratory Protection:
Airborne concentrations should be kept to lowest levels possible. If vapor, mist or
dust is generated and the occupational exposure limit of the product, or any
component of the product, is exceeded, use appropriate NIOSH or MSHA approved
air purifying or air supplied respirator after determining the airborne concentration
of the contaminant. Air supplied respirators should always be worn when airborne
concentration of the contaminant or oxygen content is unknown.
Ventilation:
Use explosion-proof equipment to maintain adequate ventilation to meet
occupational exposure limits, if applicable (see below), prevent accumulation of
explosive air-gas mixtures, and avoid significant oxygen displacement. Oxygen
levels should be at least 19.5% in confined spaces or other work areas (OSHA
value).
Exposure Limit for the Total Product:
5
V20040608 AC
None established for product; refer to Section 2 for component exposure limits.
