40 Florida Hotel”, #8 on Tennis Resorts Online “Top 100 Tennis Resorts

the 31st consecutive year. We are also the recipient of “Trip Advisor’s
“Certificate of Excellence.” Longboat Key Club Moorings, our marina
located at the Harbourside area of our resort, received the “Florida
Clean Marina” designation for the 12th year. We are very proud of
the awards we have earned and are honored that you have chosen to
stay with us and experience the wonders of the Resort for yourself.
With the full spectrum of amenities we have to offer, there is always
something exciting to explore once you arrive.
If golf is your game of choice, our Links on Longboat and Harbourside
courses will have you playing your best game ever. Should you
desire to take a lesson with one of our pros or simply enjoy some
time practicing on the driving range I am confident you will enjoy
the time spent on two of the most renowned courses in the area.
Our Tennis Gardens offers clinics, match-play and private or semiprivate lessons seven days a week. Tennis is complimentary for our
guests, so feel free to grab your racquet or borrow one of ours and
enjoy a few hours of quality court time.
Staying in shape while you are away has never been easier! Daily
classes at our Mind & Motion Studio, our well-equipped and
professionally staffed Fitness Center and exceptional wellness
offerings are wonderful ways to make working out easy and fun.
From bathing suits to blazers, savor distinctive cuisine in our eight
on-site restaurants and lounges offering casual to fine dining
throughout the week. Please check with the Concierge regarding
dining options and hours of operation during your stay.
For a unique outdoor adventure or a memorable way to celebrate a
special occasion be sure to explore our Marina to enjoy an afternoon
along our beautiful Gulf of Mexico or a sunset cruise on Sarasota Bay.
The Spa offers a full menu of island-inspired services as well as
manicures and pedicures. Specialty massages for active and sportsminded individuals are also available to help relieve tired muscles
after a day on the golf course or tennis courts. Be sure to schedule
some time to relax, unwind and rejuvenate while you are here.
For the younger set, our Camp Loggerhead offers a fun-filled
schedule of activities for children ages 5 to 12. It is a great way for
them to make new friends and participate in hula-hoop contests,
Beach Walks and Sea Turtle Talks or Fun & Crafts while you relax

Links on Longboat
Redesigned by Ron Garl in 2014 The
Links on Longboat (formerly Islandside)
has many characteristics of a seaside
links course. Ocean breezes, expansive
natural areas and big greens create an
incredible golfing experience. Links on
Longboat stretches out to 6,748 yards
from end to end with five sets of tees to
accommodate any level of play. The Par
71 layout demands accuracy off the tee.
Most holes feature small waterways
that run along one side of the fairway to
force you into a decision on placement
validating the original “watery
challenge” description. Once you have
driven your ball in a good fairway
position that is where the fun begins. Our
new Ron Garl design challenges your
iron play but also does not penalize you
for an errant shot. Fewer bunkers and
more grassed collection areas allow
the golfer to have an easy pitch to the
hole if you have missed the green. Each
green has been completely redesigned
with Ron’s creative imagination and all
18 holes have been re-grassed with the
superior, salt tolerant Platinum Paspalum
grass. In addition to the beauty of the
natural wildlife seen on a daily basis,
over 5,000 Palm trees along with pink
and white Oleanders line the Links
on Longboat.
Harbourside Courses
Harbourside is located three miles north of the Links on Longboat
and is commonly known as “the Member’s course” here at the Club.
Harbourside consists of three nines that make up three distinctive
eighteen hole options. All three nines vary in characteristics but all
pose a great challenge when deciding which to play.
Harbourside opened for play in 1982. Many of the holes border
the Sarasota Bay and our own Longboat Key Club Moorings which
makes for a beautiful setting. The White Egret nine measures 3,426
yards and has the least amount of water of the three nines. Don’t
let the lack of water on this nine fool you. Its difficulty is found in
tight fairways which demands accuracy off the tee. Once you’ve
positioned yourself correctly, big inviting greens give you plenty of
target to aim at.
The Red Hawk was recently redesigned by architect Ron Garl
who challenges the golfer with many risk and reward opportunities.
More open and forgiving than the White Egret, this nine has water
that plays into many shots. The Red Hawk measures 3,323 and this
past season the entire nine was re-sodded with the ever popular
Platinum Paspalum grass. This new playing surface gives you a great
lie every time and makes the game a pleasure to play.
The final nine at Harbourside is our famous “Blue Heron” measuring
3,411 yards—our signature nine of all 45 holes here at Longboat Key
Club. This nine was redesigned in 2005 and this year re-sodded
with the new Platinum Paspalum grass as well. This nine boarders
the Sarasota Bay with breathtaking views at every turn. It contains
nine “signature” holes and challenges every part of your game.Treelined fairways and swirling winds put a premium on shot-making
and course strategy. Courses designed by Willard Byrd:
The Red Hawk - 3,323yards
The Blue Heron - 3,401 yards
The White Egret - 3,426 yards
Enjoy five sets of tees on all three nines.

P LATES
During the first half of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates, a
physical-culturist from Germany, developed a system of
exercises that focused on the strengthening of the human
mind and body believing that mental and physical health
are interrelated. He studied both Eastern and Western forms
of exercise including yoga and was influenced by both his
parents, his father being a prize-winning gymnast and his
mother who was a naturopath. He also had a high regard
for the Greeks and the physical prowess demonstrated in
their gymnasium.
The center is the focal point of the Pilates Method. Many
teachers refer to the group of muscles in the center of the
body encompassing the abdomen, lower and upper back,
hips, buttocks, and inner thighs as the “powerhouse.” All
movement in Pilates should begin from the powerhouse and
flow outward to the limbs.
As a young man, he engaged in many of the physical training
regimens available in Germany and gleaned from these the
foundation of his own theories that could be realized through
the use of apparatus designed to help accelerate the process
of stretching, strengthening, body alignment and increased
core strength. He authored two books related to his training
method, one in 1934 and another in 1945.
Precision is essential. The focus is on performing one precise
and perfect movement, rather than many halfhearted ones.
The goal is for this precision to eventually become second
nature, and carry over into everyday life as grace and
economy of movement.
The method had a small original following that practiced in
a specialized studio. Now Pilates can be found in community
centers, gyms, and in physical therapy practices. Upon Joseph
Pilates death, a small number of “master practitioners,” who
had worked with him closely throughout the years, were well
prepared to carry on his traditions.
Embracing innovative ideas is a hallmark of credibility
and a validation of accomplishment. To that end, in 1980,
Philip Friedman and Gail Eisen, published the first modern
book on Pilates, The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental
Conditioning, which outlined six “principles of Pilates”
widely adopted by the health-conscious and wellness
oriented community. These are concentration, control,
center, flow, precision and breathing.
Pilates demands intense focus. You must concentrate on
your entire body for smooth movements and the way that
exercises are performed is most important.
You need to control every aspect of every moment. All
exercises are performed with control with the muscles
working to lift against gravity and resistance. The Pilates
Method teaches you to be in control of your body and not
at its mercy.
14
RESORT EXPERIENCE
Pilates aims for elegant efficiency of movement, creating flow
through the use of appropriate transitions. Once precision
has been achieved, the exercises are intended to flow within
and into each other in order to build strength and stamina.
Breathing is all-important in the Pilates Method. There is
considerable value in the increased intake of oxygen and the
circulation of this oxygenated blood to every part of the body.
Practitioners are taught to inhale as you move away from the
center and exhale on return, with a few exceptions. Pilates
attempts to properly coordinate this breathing practice with
movement, including breathing instructions, with every
exercise.
According to Joseph Pilates, the “powerhouse” is the center
of the body and if strengthened, offers a solid foundation
for any movement. Safety is always important and there are
precautions, modifications and protocols developed over
decades within the knowledge of Pilates that a fully qualified
Pilates instructor should know and follow when working-out
people with certain conditions.
I am pleased to announce that our very own Barbara
Bertelle has achieved her certification for Reformer 1
and movement principles from balanced body. Please
contact the Fitness Center today to discover the benefits
of Pilates and how it can help build your foundation
to a lifetime of Wellness - Longboat Key Club style!
