handy
hints
Salvo Handy Hints list was compiled by Thornton Kay of Salvo as a guide for
buyers. It is not legally watertight, so if in doubt PLEASE SEEK ADVICE.
The SALVO CODE
Look for the CRANE logo indicating businesses that subscribe to the Salvo Code for
good practice in stock purchasing
FINE Architectural & Garden Antiques
• Fine architectural and garden antiques are top of the range items, costing more
than £10,000
• Watch out for clever fakes or ‘reconstructions’
• Buying from dealers is safer than at auction
• Ask dealers if they subscribe to Art Loss Register, Trace, Salvo theft alerts. If in
doubt, check these databases yourself
• Ask about provenance, since this adds value
• Dolf Sweerts de Landas in Surrey (www.sweerts.com) and Barbara Israel in New
York (www.bi-gardenantiques.com) are top garden antiques dealers
• Nick Gifford-Mead (nicholasgiffordmead.co.uk) and Geoff Westland
(westlandlondon.com) of London are top fireplace dealers
ARCHITECTURAL ANTIQUES
• Architectural antiques found in showrooms adjoining salvage yards, in antique
shops, auctions and antique fairs
• Ask about provenance and if goods are fit for your purpose
• Consumer protection laws apply
• Some goods may not comply with modern bylaws, eg electrical and plumbing
• Buy architectural salvage first then make design decisions based on what’s available
• Reuse your own salvage, don’t skip it. Be creative, personalise, and experiment
• Use reversible fixings—screws, nails and lime mortar—for future reclaimability
• Be persistent with planners who do not want you to reuse
• Make sure designers and builders are reclamation-friendly, before you employ them
• When buying at auction things may not be what they seem so watch out
• At trade fairs it may be difficult to get your money back if things go wrong
• Buying at yards is generally safest, and the safest yards are Salvo Code dealers
Antique BATHROOMS
• Old baths with imperfect, less slippery, enamel are good for children or old people
• Re-enamelling services vary from cheap and cheerful to expensive, ask about
guarantees and the waste outlet
• To clean an old bath liberally coat with cream bathroom cleaner, leave for 24
hours then rinse well. For normal cleaning try a green plastic scouring pad and water
• Most salvage yards know a bath resurfacer or re-enameler, so try asking them
• Look for basins with the taps still attached
• Get your plumber to check the taps work before the sink or bath is fitted
• Old taps in salvage yards may be buffed and stripped but still have broken innards ask if they have been tested
• Brass in old British taps is stronger than modern brass as the zinc content is lower
• Use www.wantsandoffers.co.uk to find a home for a recent bathroom - even the
sludge green variety
• If buying an earthenware WC pan or basin, crazed glazing will leak through the
body more recent porcelain fittings are impervious stoneware so crazed glazing is not
a problem
• Ask the dealer if they sell adaptors to change old fittings to modern plumbing
systems
Antique DOORS
• When removing an in-situ door and frame for reuse, first nail a batten across the
bottom of both sides then saw through the metal frame fixings and remove the frame
and door intact in one complete ensemble
• Try not to remove the hinges, knobs and locks separately, keep them on the door
• Buy the reclaimed door before you build the new opening
• If you need a set of doors or door furniture, use harlequin (non-matching) sets
• If you want a stripped door ask the salvage yard to strip it for you
• Watch out that caustic dipping does not weaken glued joints
• The eco-friendly way is not to strip but cover up old paint with low VOC paint
• Dont fit a mortice lock into the lock rail of a thin old or new repro door - use a
rimlock
• Look for doors with existing lock/door furniture before the yard has stripped them
• Use mortice locks with a deeper throw (six inches) old locks have a longer throw
• Don’t put three hinges on a cheap door, use two hinges so there is less risk of it
warping
• Cast iron hinges are best in house fires, they do not buckle, so they open in or out
• When cutting doors down to fit an opening, avoid trimming too much as it
weakens the joints
• Consider planing timber on undersize doors, an inch or so, top bottom or sides.
• Glue split panels, but do not glue the panels into the frame, they should be free to
move
• A door opening should be 4 feet higher than its width (Traditional)
• A door opening should be 4/7 of the height of the room (Vitruvius)
Antique FIREPLACES
• To find the right historic style of fireplace check original houses in your street
• In doubt go downmarket rather than upmarket, try not to gentrify modest houses
• Then again, buy what you personally like
• To find the original size look for the outline of the old fireplace in the wall plaster
• Write on the back of the fireplace from where and when it was bought and from
where it came from before that
• Watch out for unmarked repro among old fireplaces in shops and yards - ask
• Damaged cast iron inserts can be repaired, and missing bars, frets and register
plates replaced
• Many dealers have in-house or local restorers, ask if they can repair your originals
Antique GARDEN ORNAMENTS
• Watch out for repro being sold as antique
• Old handthrown flower pots are more frost resistant than machine made new ones
• Bring fired clay urns into conservatories in the winter to protect moulded
decoration against frost
• Photograph old stone troughs, mill stones and staddle stones - so they can be
identified if they are stolen
• Make small cuts in old iron garden furniture with a junior hacksaw - so they can be
identified if stolen
• If your garden ornaments are stolen raise a theft alert - see www.theft-alerts.com
• Old conservatories can be bought but are a labour of love to move and re-erect
Antique KITCHENS
• Old chipped Belfast sinks can be resurfaced by bath restorers
• Be innovative - use old things for new purposes
• Many materials are cleanable and durable, like old stainless steel sinks
• 1950’s retro is in, English Rose and Paul kitchens for example
• Old cast iron kitchen ranges can be made to work but cooking on them can be
tricky
• Don’t rip out old modern kitchens, reuse and remodel them
Antique LIGHTING
• Old electric fittings need adapting to modern standards
• With lamps this usually means replacing the bulb holder and flex and adding an
earth wire
• Ask an electrician to make an old lamp comply or do it yourself (only if you are
competent)
• Existing old light switches can be fitted with a new earth wire
• If replacing old light switches, various repro jellymould and plain lookalikes are
available
• Old oil lamps for sale must have a fuel label, e.g. paraffin, kerosene, petrol
• Big old green-enamelled steel lampshades and glass school globe shades are good
buys
Antique WINDOWS
• Dont replace old wooden windows with uPVC, just repair and draught proof them
• When using old windows as replacements they need not comply with Part L of the
building regs
• Use www.salvo.co.uk or www.wantsandoffers.co.uk to find secondhand Crittall
windows or uPVC
• House window glass made prior to 1950 was handmade muff or cylinder glass and
was always slightly ‘wavy’
• If replacing pre 1950’s glass use old cylinder glass to keep character from inside
and out
• Old salvaged embossed pattern glass can sometimes be found with difficulty - try
SalvoWEB.com want ads
• Instead of replacing old windows find a carpenter who can do an insitu scarf joint
• If reputtying use linseed oil window putty for wooden windows
• Make sure the putty line is inside the rebate and cannot be seen from inside the
house
• Use dark coloured paints to repaint old external woodwork, they will last much
longer than light colours
• Use reclaimed Victorian softwood to replace softwood window parts as it’s better
quality
Architectural IRON
• Cast iron is cast in moulds, wrought iron is hammered/wrought into shape, steel is
the modern version of wrought iron
• Antique wrought iron predating 1900 and modern steel are different materials
• Chris Topp of Real Wrought Iron Co recommends old wrought iron should never
be shot-blast because this removes protective coating of mill-scale and white lead filler
which results in the ironwork deteriorating
• You can shot blast modern steel as it does not have protective millscale
• If you must strip old paint from real wrought iron use a chemical stripper
• Use bituminous black paint on old wrought iron, not modern gloss paints
• When shotblasting old radiators the seals between sections can be damaged and
leak, chemical strippers are safer
• Unrestored untested rads may get frost damaged and the castings may crack
• If your plumber needs them ask a dealer for old radiator heat output sheets
• Use a matt black finish on rads for highest radiant heat output. Light-coloured
metallic paints give least radiant heat
• Ask dealers for fittings to adapt old radiators to modern plumbing systems
Architectural STONE, TERRACOTTA & COMPOSITION STONE
• Terracotta is a description used for fired clay, earthenware and stoneware
• Composition stone, or compo, covers all cements concretes and plasters
• Architectural items include balustrade, capitals, columns, cornice, gate piers,
• Sometimes old weathered carved stone is actually old compo, but it is still valuable
• It is sometimes impossible to tell the difference between compo and stone
• Try turning the item upside down and check the base, for obvious mould marks
• Use old stonework innovatively to create contrast in a modern setting
• Use old methods of repair, lime mortars and plaster, wire and staples, rather than
modern high-tech glues
• Broken carvings and reliefs can be featured artistically both indoors and outdoors
• Stone steps are better than wood outdoors
• Stone elements are often used to create novel and picturesque summerhouses
• Never clean lichen or moss off old stone or compo
• Yoghurt does not encourage lichen, only mould and algae
• Use nitrogen-rich chicken and bird droppings to encourage lichen
Architectural WOOD
• Includes architrave, cornice, dado, handrail, panelling, skirting, spindles, staircases
• Old staircases need buildings designed around them, they are difficult to adapt
• Panelled rooms usually require adapting, ask if this can be done by the dealer
• Watch out that caustic dipping does not weaken glued joints
• Instead of stripping consider covering up the old paint with low VOC eco-friendly
• Reuse 1930’s three or five panel doors on their side to make dado panelling
• Reuse reclaimed mouldings to make mirror, picture frames, and ersatz panelling
BYGONES
• Bygones include agricultural, domestic, industrial, institutional, commercial,
paraphernalia and artefacts
• Create garden features from old cider mills. Recondition old garden tools for reuse
• Make a shower out of a K6 red telephone box (no don’t!)
• Reuse massive old hemispherical boilers cut off, up-ended to make summerhouses
& sheds
• Reuse old wooden boats cut in half as shelters, sheds and cupboards
• Reuse old electrical insulators as modish decor. Reuse old massive electrical
switchgear to turn on your hifi
• Watch out for toxins in industrial bits and pieces—if in any doubt do not reuse
• Be adventurous and ignore the critics
VISITING a reclamation yard
• Wear stout shoes or boots, old clothes and take gloves for a good rummage
• Do not expect somebody in bright green dungarees to serve you
• Customers ask questions and yards normally have very few staff to answer them
• If you are buying lots of things, try asking for a discount
• Do not take children, dogs, disabled or old people if you can help it
• Do not take your husband, just take his cheque book (men tend to prefer new
things)
• Believe it or not, despite all the rhetoric, more is being destroyed now than ten
years ago. Everything can be repaired, buying old things and getting them fixed is a
good thing
• If you cannot find a repairer and do not have skills yourself try a course at a local
college and learn how to
• Use www.salvoweb.com to find dealers and salvage
• Use www.wantsandoffers.co.uk for lower value reusables
• Get your builders to use www.salvomie.co.uk to avoid chucking reusables in skips
Reclaimed BRICKS
• Reclaimed bricks are normally sold with one good face and one or two good ends
• Some yards include half-bricks in pallets as they are often needed within the work
• If you can, ask to see the centre of a pallet of bricks to make sure they are all good
• Use lime mortar to make sure reclaimed bricks are reclaimable in future
• Pavers are paving bricks, paviours are people who lay them
• If quality is an issue, ask if the reclaimed bricks can be tested for frost resistance,
although reclaimed bricks from external walls have withstood thousands of freeze
thaw cycles, so they will be fine provided they are laid in lime mortar
• Internal bricks are usually similar in quality to external bricks
• The Anglo-Saxons reused 500 year old Roman bricks in St Albans Abbey, and they
are still fine today
• Efflorescence is white salt deposits on brick faces which is often caused by the use
of Portland cement mortar
• Reclaimed bricks are no more contaminated with dry rot than brand new bricks.
Dry rot will take hold on new or old bricks if the environmental conditions are right.
Dry rot spores are in the air all the time. Reuse softer handmade bricks as pavers in
the garden.
Reclaimed FLAGSTONES, SETTS & FLOOR TILES
• Reclaimed flagstones from inside old mill buildings are sometimes oil-stained,
when relaid the oil will seep out spoiling
• The best sandstone flags are ‘street’ flags. Make sure the yard is not selling new
Indian flags as reclaimed
• Best street flags come in even course heights,18ins, 21ins, 24ins, & random lengths
• Random flags are not laid to courses, but squared with ‘snecks’ filling small gaps
• Crazy paving is angular broken stone or concrete flagstones
• Reuse limestone flagstones, not sandstone, for kitchen floors unless you live in a
castle
• When laying floor tiles before the grout goes hard polish with sharp sand and
sawdust
• Use a lime and soot mix for external or internal flagstones especially over vaults or
where it is required to be water tight
• Setts should be laid in a soft lime mortar with perhaps Portland cement added
• Setts should have thin not thick joints to look best
• Polish setts, after laying, with sharp sand to remove mortar from the face
• Setts are man-made cubic stones, cobbles are naturally water-worn stones
Reclaimed FLOORING
• Check if reclaimed wooden flooring has been left outside and in the wet
• Ask if the moisture content is known (this can be measured with a moisture
meter). For most floors 7% or 8% is best.
• If possible lay reclaimed flooring loose in the room for a few months, then fix it
properly
• Woodblock (sometimes called parquet) is ideal for laying direct on concrete floors
• Woodblock needs to have cleaned edges, tongues, grooves, check that the lengths
and width of the batch are identical
• Old even layers of asphalt can be left on the bottom of woodblocks if bitumen
mastic is used as the glue
• Traditionally the bitumen or asphalt glue created a damp proof membrane
• When laying woodblock start in the middle and work outwards
• Reclaimed woodblock thicknesses vary from thinner in the centre of a room to
thicker around the edges. Sort the wood block into piles of different thickness and
lay similar thicknesses together to avoid so much sanding. If one woodblock is much
lower the surrounding floor will all have to be sanded to that level
• Sawdust from some tropical hardwood may be toxic to some people, watch out for
nosebleeds and wear a mask
• Try alternatives to sanding floors
• Try cleaning old flooring using wirewool, white spirit, meths then buffing with
beeswax
• Try scrubbing in-situ floorboards with cream bath cleaner then waxing when dry
• Most wood, especially softwood, darkens with exposure to sunlight creating a
patina
• If you replace an old floorboard with a reclaimed board try scrubbing the whole
area to even out colour differences
• Use oil/water-damaged maple strip for flooring lofts/sheds where staining does
not matter
Reclaimed ROOF TILES & SLATES
• Tap reclaimed slates, they should ring, if they make a dull thud they maybe faulty
• Create new nail holes on sound slate inside old worn holes
• Use copper nails for best durability fixing slate and tiles
• Copper nails will bend easily allowing movement and bedding-in within the roof
• Don’t use sacrificial copper as a fungicide on wood shingle roofs - it poisons
animals.
• Consider using stainless steel slate clips with reclaimed slate in exposed areas
• Use swept tiled valleys to avoid using lead
• Use cement fillets to replace originals, but soak well the roof slates or tiles and the
abutment first
• Some old reclaimed machine-made pressed tiles that withstood the test of time fail
when moved to a different location
• Hand made tiles are usually most frost resistant
• Corrugated cement sheet roofs can be repaired with reclaimed
Reclaimed STONE
• See where quarried stone came from in your area at different times, through the
years stone travelled from quarries further away
• More expensive houses may have had stone that came from outside the area
• Random rubble stone is undressed stone of different course heights
• Ashlar is smooth and sawn six sides in 9ins to 16ins course heights
• Rangework is ashlar stone in 4ins to 8ins course heights
• Use drystone or lime mortar
• Build a cavity wall of two leaves of insulation block or frame, then lay a 4ins deep
leaf of reclaimed face stone
• Set up an ‘Extreme Masonry Club’ to get around EU 25kg max weight laws
Reclaimed TIMBER & BEAMS
• Make sure that old beams are sound if you are using them structurally
• If they are not, then use a steel or concrete lintel above and fix the beam to it
• Traditional exposed oak beams were always painted black, not polished wood
• Use tongues on first floor floorboards that will be exposed on the underside for
dust, smoke and sound
• To make raised reclaimed creosoted sleeper beds, cover the surface with old rope,
tiles or slate, or plant a creeper
• Be aware that sawdust from some tropical hardwood may be toxic to some people,
watch out for nosebleeds and wear a mask
Demolition & Refurbishment SALVAGE
• Set aside an area for storing salvageable materials removed by your builders during
your own building project
• Carefully number or mark elements before dismantling so that reuse is simpler
• Allow the person who will do the rebuild to also do the dismantling and never go
to a demo site without permission
• Anything in skips belongs to someone, so ask if you can have it before skip-diving
• Raid skips if it stops reusable material from going to landfill—if caught offer money
• Ask for the load to be delivered to a convenient plot where you can sort it out
• Use a hard hat, boots and a hiviz jacket if going on a construction or demo site
• Be very careful when dismantling, especially at height, follow safety codes
(www.hse.gov.uk) and avoid working alone
• Be aware that some materials are toxic and no longer legal, like asbestos and PCB’s
• Stuff at waste transfer always belongs to someone, so ask
• Get your builder to use scraps, like plasterboard offcuts, not skip them

There are now 150 dealers
who have signed up for the
code, mostly in England,
Scotland, Ireland, France,
Belgium, Canada and the

Dealers that support the
Salvo Code undertake not to

stolen, and to avoid buying
items removed from
protected historic buildings
unless consent has been
given for their removal. They
record sellers’ details,
including car registration
numbers, and ask for proof
of identity. They also keep a
record of the provenance of
an item, and the date of
manufacture, where possible.
