Formed by former members of Dire
Straits because of the substantial
demand to hear the band’s much
loved catalogue of great songs,
The Straits features Alan Clark, who
joined Dire Straits in 1980 as their
first keyboard player, and Chris
White, best known for his saxophone
work with Dire Straits.
What if I’m one of the guys who
never has a baby? Why is this not
a male subject?
Still in her early twenties, Oxfordbased Megan Henwood now has
both BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award
Winner and BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards
“Horizon Award” Nominee 2012 on
her biography, and can count
Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk
Festival, Cropredy and Larmer Tree
amongst her many festival
appearances. Her live performances
reveal powerful, poignant and often
witty lyrics woven around wonderful
timeless pop melodies. Discover first
hand why she is creating such a buzz.
Following an amazing debut show at
the Royal Albert Hall, the band have
gone from strength to strength,
performing Dire Straits’ Greatest

The fourth of Haydn’s Paris set of
symphonies is one of his finest. Three
stately opening movements give
way to a dancing, lighthearted finale.
The young Beethoven set out to
show all he was capable of as both
composer and pianist in his Piano
Concerto no. 1. The dynamic outer
movements, including trumpets and
drums for extra grandeur, frame a
rich, singing slow movement. The
first of Sibelius’ great cycle of
symphonies is a brooding and
powerful piece from the late 1890s.

Jack Bruce. The composer, the
singer, the multi-instrumentalist,
the legend. Hailed as one of the
most powerful vocalists and greatest
bassists of his time, his improvisational
skill and utterly unique, free-spirited
approach to composition and
performance forever changed
electric music.
His pioneering, full-toned, freewheeling playing on the electric
bass revolutionised the way the
instrument is used and influenced
the playing of countless bassists,
including Sting and Jaco Pastorius.
His work with bands such as Cream
and the Tony Williams Lifetime, as
well as his solo material, unlocked
the doors to a new approach to the
art of sound.

Jirí Belohlavek conductor
Beethoven’s last piano concerto is
his most brilliant and powerful. The
two extrovert outer movements are
balanced by the inward looking slow
movement, which moves into the
finale with a simple but magical
transition. The concert concludes
with three of the symphonic poems
from Smetana’s great cycle Má Vlast
(My Country). The whole cycle is one
of his most popular and successful
works, and of crucial importance in
the history of Czech music. The three
pieces are musical pictures of the
course of the great river Moldau,
an episode in the countryside, and a
dashing rebel leader, out for revenge
after her lover is unfaithful.

“For a long time I've been fascinated
with lullabies – for adults, hearing

What, for me, has come to light most
of all has been the hidden nature of
some of the richest of the traditional

They have been tucked away in song
collections, manuscripts and memories.
I'm excited to be giving new life to

Iván Fischer conductor
One of the world’s great orchestras,
the Budapest Festival Orchestra’s
programme begins with their
compatriot Dohnányi’s Symphonic
Minutes. This attractive piece, in five
short movements, shows the
composer’s mastery of the orchestra.
Beethoven’s youthful piano concerto
shows the composer advancing
confidently from Mozart’s model,
with a tender slow movement and
mischievous, sprightly finale. Brahms’
Fourth Symphony is the fruit of a
lifetime wrestling with the problem
of how to write symphonies after
Beethoven, and balance the dramatic
and contemplative sides of his character.
The four movements end with a
huge passacaglia, thirty variations
on a theme from a Bach cantata.
“The BFO is one of the great
orchestras and the playing was
exceptional.” The Guardian
As his new album's title relates,
Loudon Wainwright III is Older Than
My Old Man Now – his old man being
the late Loudon Wainwright, Jr., the
esteemed Life Magazine columnist
and senior editor. “Singer-songwriter
contemporaries of mine have recently
taken to writing memoirs and
autobiographies,“ notes Wainwright.”
I decided I would try to tell the story of
my swinging life in a three and onehalf minute song.”
He's speaking specifically of the
album's lead track The Here and The
Now, and this tour will bring you this
and more from the new album, plus
other well known and loved songs
from his huge back catalogue now
consisting of over 25 albums and
over 40 years of songwriting. All
delivered with Loudon's inimitable
wit, humour, timing and pathos. His
concerts are as individual as his songs,

Charles Dickens’ Old Curiosity Shop Revisited
Nell Trent lives with her grandfather above The Curiosity Shop, a vintage record store.
When the shop is repossessed by Quilp, a vicious loan shark, Nell and Grandpa are forced to hit
the road. Living rough they meet the usual suspects – con men, Good Samaritans, wide boys and
buskers – in cities and villages across England.
Imaginatively translated to the present day, Dickens’ story of love, human frailty and downright
wickedness has a fabulous cast of characters, from bent lawyer Sally Brass to wide boy rapper
Dick E. Swiveller. Playfully staged and featuring film and a soundtrack that takes in hits from
Bach to Bowie, Curiosity Shop shows England to be as much a cultural curiosity shop as it ever
was in Dickens’ day…
Theatre Alibi last visited The Haymarket with their wonderful adaptation of Michael Frayn’s Spies.

“Incredibly catchy, so seductive…
a new classic” Evening Standard
Pink Martini released their debut
album in 1997, but it was not until
the single Hey Eugene started
receiving regular airplay in 2007 that
the UK started to take notice. Their
style draws inspiration from music
from all over the world – crossing
genres of classical, jazz and oldfashioned pop. Founding member
Thomas Lauderdale says “All of us
in Pink Martini have studied different
languages as well as different styles
of music from different parts of the
world, so inevitably, our repertoire is
wildly diverse. At one moment, you
feel like you’re in the middle of a
samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and
in the next moment, you’re in a French
music hall of the 1930s or a palazzo
in Napoli. It’s a bit like an urban
musical travelogue.”

Three vivid examples of tone-painting
unite this programme under a
conductor famed for his conducting
of English music. In The Lark Ascending,
the solo violin soars above the
orchestra in increasing rapture.
Elgar’s affectionate piece includes
folk tunes the composer noted down
while on holiday. The success of
Vaughan Williams’ London Symphony
made him a composer of national
importance. The four movements,
while keeping to the traditional
symphonic outline, also create a vivid
portrait of a day in London, with a
particularly evocative introduction at
dawn and epilogue as the day fades

Murder In Play
by Simon Brett
Star cast to be announced
Written by Simon Brett, a prolific writer of whodunnits in the Golden
Age tradition of detective fiction, Murder In Play is a unique comedy
thriller which will entertain the audience with its wickedly clever
mix of eccentric characters, complex plot twists and gentle humour.
The dress rehearsal of Boris Smolensky’s production, Murder at
Priorswell Manor, is not going well. The actors are more interested in
their egos than the play, the props seem to have a life of their own,
and the director has personal problems!
Suddenly fiction becomes reality when Boris’s wife, Renee is
murdered on stage. Who is the murderer? Was it Ginette, Boris’s
pretty but not exactly clever mistress? Was it Renee’s acting rival
and former TV soap star, Christa? Or was it Boris himself?
Using a play-within-a-play device, the fictional theatre company
keeps the audience guessing with numerous clues about the
murderer until the final, thrilling denouement.
Mixing the intrigue of an Agatha Christie together with hilarious
characters and a sophisticated story-line makes Murder in Play a
great evening out for all ages.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard piano
Christoph von Dohnányi conductor
Brahms’ titanic concerto took a long
time to find the final form that
satisfied the composer. Stormy outer
movements are separated by a slow
movement of stillness and great
beauty. The Eroica symphony
expanded both symphonic form and
musical language in one astounding
blow. The emotional heart of the
piece is the famous funeral march,
and it ends with a set of variations
on a simple tune that overflows with
musical imagination.

Stravinsky Pulcinella
David Gibson conductor
Basingstoke Choral Society takes great
pleasure in performing, once again,
with the distinguished London Mozart
Players for an evening of superb music.
Mozart’s C minor Mass is a work of
conspicuous power and beauty where
vigorous choruses mingle with sumptuous
solo arias and ensembles of operatic
radiance. There have been many settings
of the Te Deum, but this version by Haydn
is a cheerful and glorious work, typical
of the composer. The neo-classical style
of Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella perfectly
compliments the work of Mozart and
Haydn. Based on melodies by Pergolesi,
Stravinsky managed to put his own
unmistakeable stamp on the ballet.

talented musicians, this thrilling

Woody Mann
Basingstoke
Symphony
Orchestra
Among guitarists and critics,
Woody Mann is considered a
modern master. While the blues are
his touchstone, he seems to draw
inspiration from every direction,
blending a myriad of influences with
ease and grace. Woody Mann
received his first musical schooling
in the living room of Rev. Gary Davis,
the now legendary blues, gospel,
and ragtime guitarist. Though Davis
died in 1972, his guitar mastery
proved to be an indelible influence
on his young student and friend.
The passion, energy and artistry of
Davis’ early work became a lasting
touchstone for Mann as he embarked
on his own musical journey. Since
then, he has pursued a rich and
diverse career, which ranges from
playing with jazz great Attila Zoller,
to accompanying songwriter Dori
Previn, and teaching guitar to
legendary recording artist Paul Simon.

Big Wooden Horse Theatre present
The Night
Before Christmas
On the night before Christmas, Emily stares
out of the window, hugs her teddy and waits
excitedly for the morning, while in the corner
a little mouse called Eddie can’t understand
why only humans are allowed to get presents.
So he sets off in search of Father Christmas to
find out for himself. Along the way he dodges
the family cat, gets directions from a cowardly
robot and is given some unexpected advice
from the magical fairy on top of the tree. Will
Eddie get an answer? Will Emily get her wish?
And what is that funny-shaped present sitting
under the tree?
The Night Before Christmas is the latest production
from Big Wooden Horse, creators of the hit
shows Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, The
Way Back Home and Aliens Love Underpants.
Great for families with children aged 2-7, and
perfect for school groups as a Christmas treat.
