Tire Rack Street Survival®, a national non-profi t teen driving program, teaches teens skills that will help them stay alive behind the wheel. Teenagers learn from knowledgeable enthusiast driving coaches how their actions govern a car’s responses, what the limits of their vehicles are and how to avoid accidents entirely. Unlike traditional driver education programs based on classroom theory and simple vehicle maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival® program improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations. Working with local members of the BMW Car Club of America, Sports Car Club of America, Porsche Club of America and other like-minded enthusiast organizations, Tire Rack Street Survival® utilizes local, knowledgeable volunteers to conduct a program that in 2011 will result in almost 100 days of instruction across the country.

TIRE TESTING
ON THE ROAD
We’re America’s largest independent tire tester and consumer-direct
source for tires, wheels and performance accessories.
Tire Rack’s team of 100-plus test drivers (our sales specialists, key product specialists and lead test drivers) evaluate tires from every major manufacturer. This behind-the-wheel experience along with extensive classroom training allows our sales team to provide you with expert product recommendations based on how, where and what you drive. Each year our team compares up to 40 different products, gaining fi rsthand experience with more tires in one season of testing than most drivers will own in a lifetime of driving. Our back-to-back test format allows our team to experience a group of products in a short period of time under controlled conditions. To assure each tire gets a fair comparison we use identical vehicles (except for the color), the same Real World Road Ride route and the same Performance Test Track course. During each evaluation the only things that change are the tires we’re testing. TIRE INFLUENCE ON VEHICLE
FUEL ECONOMY
Beginning in 2009, Tire Rack began measuring the infl uence tires have on vehicle fuel economy with our Prius test of eco-friendly low rolling resistance tires developed for hybrid and electric vehicles. Last year we expanded measuring fuel consumption to include all tires tested on our BMW 3 Series coupes and Porsche Cayennes.
Over the course of several days, each tire is driven for approximately 500 miles around our team’s Real World Road Ride route, covering a blend of 40 mph county roads, 55 mph state highways and 65 mph expressways. Since we want to compare the fuel consumption typical drivers would experience, our drivers run at the posted speed limits and maintain the vehicle’s speed using cruise control whenever possible. They do not use hypermiling techniques.
A 6.6-mile loop offers a variety of conditions to examine a tire's ride, noise and handling qualities.
REAL WORLD ROAD RIDES
Our 6.6-mile Real World Road Ride loop allows our team to experience ride, noise and light handling qualities across the variety of conditions our customers drive on every day. We include two-lane roads, four-lane roads and expressways, as well as surfaces that include asphalt (some very smooth areas while others are patched), chipped stone in tar (rough and irregular), and concrete (complete with expansion joints and some studded tire wear). The vehicle conditions that would affect the results are kept to a minimum with the radio off, windows up and climate control fan on its lowest setting. This allows us to focus on each product’s contribution to ride, noise and light handling qualities without unnecessary distractions. Our fuel consumption measurements follow consistent procedures designed to minimize variables that could infl uence the results, assuring all test vehicles in the convoy run under the same prevailing conditions. We use Linear Logic ScanGauge II automotive computers to record fuel consumption and Race Technology DL1 data loggers to record true distance travelled. We report the vehicle miles per gallon observed during our test, as well as extrapolate the number of gallons required to drive for a year (15,000 miles) at our observed rate.

PERFORMANCE TEST TRACK DRIVES
Our purpose-built test track located at our Indiana headquarters provides the Tire Rack team with a safe environment to fi nd out how tires behave under the extremes of emergency situations on the road. Our team members run multiple laps of our standardized test course to challenge the car’s steering response, handling characteristics, braking and cornering capabilities. We time selected track segments to quantify the product’s contribution to the vehicle’s handling and maximum cornering capability. In addition to recording lap times, our team provides subjective feedback on each tire’s behavior at the limit. At the end of the 2010 testing season, our test track received a makeover, adding a new layer of asphalt to freshen up the driving surface, and an extension to the paved area that will allow us to expand our standard course layout, improving the lessons we learn. We have also added an area dedicated to testing the hydroplaning characteristics of the tires we evaluate.
PANIC STOPPING TESTS
Life seldom depends on how fast you go. But how well you stop can really make a difference. And while today’s four-wheel disc and anti-lock braking systems often get the majority of the praise, it’s really the tires that convert those system’s abilities into actual stopping distances. To evaluate the contribution tires make, we conduct straight-line braking tests to accurately measure panic stopping distances. We stabilize the speed at 50 miles per hour and apply the brakes hard enough to engage the anti-lock braking system and bring the vehicle to a complete stop. We run multiple stops on each tire and use a brake performance analyzer to quantify the data and determine average stopping distances.
DRY AND WET ROAD CONDITIONS

Driving into a long pool of water held to a constant depth, we’ll fi nd out how tires behave when they encounter standing water, and at what speed they ultimately lose contact with the road. Many of today’s tires deliver similar dry weather handling and performance, but the real tie-breaker can be when the roads are made slippery by a rain shower. Our test track features a sprinkler system that allows us to evaluate traction, handling and braking distances under consistent wet road conditions. We also test tires in the snow when Mother Nature obliges and on the ice of a hockey rink.

We have found that our team’s driving experience and insight refl ects the diversity of our customers – they’re a combination of racers, autocrossers, enthusiasts and everyday drivers whose evaluations provide an excellent overview of the variety of products we test. No one likes the sudden surprise of the hard tug at the steering wheel you feel as you encounter unexpected standing water on the roadway. Worse yet is when the tire hydroplanes completely, literally lifting off the road on a wedge of water as the tire is no longer able to channel the water through its footprint. Thanks to our recent track expansion, we’ve added a dedicated area to evaluate the Following every Ride and Drive, we compile the subjective impression of our team, to score comfort and performance on a 10-point scale. Additionally, we record each driver’s lap times during the Performance Track Drive and the fastest laps are averaged to help quantify each tire’s performance capabilities on the track. After all, experience really is the best teacher.

CHECK TIRE PRESSURES
Maintaining the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure is the single-most important thing you can do to protect your tire investment. Improper infl ation pressures can cause uneven tire wear, upset vehicle handling and reduce fuel economy, as well as lead to permanent internal damage. Most of today’s tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) will not warn a driver until tire pressures are 25% below what’s recommended. There are potholes everywhere, debris on the roads and plenty of
obstacles to avoid. Properly maintained tires can generally handle the
bumps and scrapes, but inevitably one unforeseen road hazard can leave
you with a tire in need of repair or replacement.
Because of this, many drivers desire the additional security and peace of mind that a Tire Road Hazard Service Program provides.
Tire Rack supports the tire manufacturers’ warranties for all of the tire brands that we sell. Those warranties apply to tires that become unusable for any reason within the tire manufacturer’s control, typically covering materials and workmanship. However, these warranties do not apply to causes and conditions beyond the tire manufacturer’s control, such as road hazards. Road hazard damage occurs when a tire fails as a result of a puncture, bruise or break incurred during the course of normal driving on a maintained road. The BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW-2 (Key feature: Dry and Wet traction, we
added the “2” to identify that this version uses BFGoodrich’s second-generation
“New Tread” design) was developed for drivers of hot sports cars, coupes,

The Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 (Key feature: Mud traction, with the 2 to identify that this version uses BFGoodrich’s
Krawler T/A KX-inspired tread design) is developed for off-roaders driving full-sized, lifted trucks who participate
in rock climbing and/or other challenging off-road driving. The Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is designed to combine more
traction and mud-clearing ability than its predecessor with a smoother ride and less road noise than normally
expected from an aggressive tire.

The Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 symmetric tread design
features deep, self-cleaning, independent tread
blocks and linear transverse flex zones to provide
the elasticity to conform to off-road obstacles when

lugs, cut- and chip-resistant sidewall compounds and
a TriGard carcass (three-ply polyester construction)
that is up to 33% stronger than the previous MudTerrain T/A KM tire.

PROFESSIONAL MOUNT AND BALANCE
Tires and wheels are mounted using state of-the-art, scratch-free mounting machines. Hunter GSP9700
balancing, the most accurate and precise balancing system available, is also used. Many dealers charge extra
for this service, but we don’t! Adhesive balancing weights are hidden for the best wheel appearance. The
GSP9700 simulates a road test with a unique load roller that applies up to 1,400 pounds of force against the
rotating assembly. The roller measures the loaded run-out of the assembly (deflection while under load) and
automatically recommends corrections when needed.
Balancing is only a small portion of wheel vibration. The GSP9700 tests each wheel for excessive lateral and
radial run-out before it is used. If the tire/wheel assembly never came in contact with the road, then simple
balancing would be sufficient. A square wheel can be balanced, but it will not give a smooth, vibration-free ride.
INSTALLATION HARDWARE
• Lug Nuts or Lug Bolts If your wheel purchase requires special lug hardware we include it at no
charge. Most wheels are provided with lug hardware but some applications are designed to use your
Original Equipment lug hardware (this will be indicated on your printed invoice). McGard locking lug
hardware is available for most applications for a small additional cost (call to order).
• Centering Rings If a centering ring is required to properly fit the wheels on your car then they are
provided free of charge.
• Valve Stems Included with all Tire & Wheel Package purchases. Many other dealers charge
$1 to $3 each for rubber valve stems.

What if Your Vehicle has a
T IRE PRESSURE
MONITORING
SYSTEM?
Maintaining the correct tire pressure for a vehicle
is the variable in how much load its tires can safely
carry. The correct pressure will carry the weight
without a problem. Too little tire pressure will
eventually cause tire failure. It’s been estimated that
about 25% of vehicles on the road are running on
underinflated tires. Attempts from auto manufacturers
to counteract the lack of inflation have resulted
in two common systems: direct and indirect tire
pressure monitoring.
Indirect systems use the vehicle’s antilock braking
system’s wheel speed sensors to compare the
rotational speed of one tire versus the others. If
a tire is low on pressure, it will roll at a different
number of revolutions per mile than the other three
and alert the vehicle’s onboard computer. Indirect
systems (except for the TPMS on several 2009+

where all four tires are losing pressure at the same
rate, such as the effects of time

Direct systems attach a pressure
sensor/transmitter to the vehicle’s
wheel. An in-vehicle receiver warns the driver if the
pressure in any tire falls below a predetermined
level. Direct systems are typically more accurate
and reliable and most are able to indicate which tire
is underinflated.

While all brake pad friction material generates dust as it stops a vehicle, some brake pads produce more visible dust than others. Generally, a pad with higher friction levels and operating temperature range will produce higher dust levels. Pads that produce
lower amounts of dust will receive the highest
scores in this category.
WARNING: BRAKES ARE A SAFETY-CRITICAL PART OF A MOTOR VEHICLE
Brake components should be installed by a competent mechanic in a professional manner. Any incorrect installation of brake components can cause a major safety problem or an accident. If you are not a competent, qualifi ed mechanic you should not attempt to install these products, but should take the vehicle to a vehicle dealer or competent automotive mechanic for their installation. In some cases, servicing or replacing brake hardware at the time of rotor installation may also be required. Brake rotors are wear items and as such, should be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary. Street and Highway Use: Brake pads should typically be replaced when approximately 1/8" to 3/16" of friction material remains on the steel backing plate. Brake rotors should be replaced before their thickness has reached the prescribed “Worn Rotor Minimum Thickness” limit (expressed in mm) engraved on the edge of the brake disc. Plain rotors may be turned on a brake lathe to remove scoring and to true the disc surfaces until this minimum thickness has been reached. Drilled and slotted rotors may not be able to be turned and should be replaced if they become scored.
Track and Competition Use: Due to the extremes of heat and pressure encountered by brake systems used for track and competition applications, all brake system components (pads, rotors, calipers, lines, hardware and fl uid) must be compatible and should be inspected between sessions. Brake pads and rotors should be replaced before they reach the wear limits described above.

HEAT CYCLING
New DOT-legal competition tires
require a break-in period to
achieve maximum performance
and durability. Running new
tires through an easy heat
cycle first and allowing
them to relax (24 to 48
hours) allows the rubber bonds to relink in a more uniform manner than
they were originally. Tire Rack’s heat cycling procedure turns a tire
against three rollers for 10 to 15 minutes. All of the heat generated as the
tire turns is the result of deflecting (stretching) the tire within its normal
operating range. There is no “artificial” heat added or wear incurred.
SHAVING TIRES
Tire shaving is an effective means of permitting more of a tire’s
performance capability to be realized early in its life. Tire shaving
removes tread rubber and reduces tire weight by several pounds. A
shaved tire’s tread profile will usually result in a slight increase in the
width of the tire’s contact patch putting a little more rubber on the
road. The resulting shallower tread depth reduces the tire’s slip angle,
increases its responsiveness and helps stabilize its cornering power
by minimizing tread block squirm. In many cases, shaved tires used in
competition actually have a longer useful life than tires that begin being
run at full tread depth.

NATIONAL SOLO PROGRAM
The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) offers one
of the most accessible and cost-effective ways to
experience the thrill of competing in a vehicle by
simply strapping on a helmet and buckling your
seatbelt. The SCCA Solo program separates cars into
classes based on their performance potential and
offers driving enthusiasts over 1,500 local events
across the country to participate in.
Solo or autocross competition allows drivers to run
one at a time against the clock (hence the term
“Solo”) on courses typically defined by traffic cones
in a large, open, controlled, paved area, i.e. a parking
lot. Since the risks are relatively low and maximum
speeds are those of normal highway driving, Solo is
an excellent way for drivers to safely refine their skill
at the limit of their vehicle’s performance.
The 2011 season marks Tire Rack’s 17th year as
the title sponsor of the National SCCA Solo program.
Throughout the year the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National
Tour brings larger National Tour and ProSolo
events to venues around the country that give

local members a chance to pit their skills against
other drivers from their region, as well as national
competitors. The National SCCA Solo series events
focus on “Tire Rack SCCA Championship Road
to Lincoln” and the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National
Championship and Tire Rack ProSolo National
Championship held at the Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln,
Nebraska a 60-acre site that is perfect for hosting
the World’s Largest Motorsports Championships with
over 1,100 competitors from across the country.
Supporting the Tire Rack SCCA National Solo
Program is the Divisional Championship program
and the addition of the Eastern/Western States
Championship, designed to further support the
drive towards the year-end championship events in
Lincoln. As an additional enhancement, the SCCA has
also instituted the Triple Crown award to recognize
competitors who win a Divisional Championship,
Eastern/Western States Championship and National
Championship all in the same year.
Sanctioned by the BMW Car Club of America,
this door-to-door racing series takes place at the
most challenging racetracks across the country
and is open to BMWs that have the proper safety
modifications for competition. By running under
vintage racing rules that penalize overly aggressive
driving, the club attempts to minimize the risk of
vehicle damage normally associated with track
racing. Under these rules, any single or multi-car
incident that involves damage can result in exclusion
from the event, a probationary period or suspension
of racing privileges for an extended period of time.
The 2011 Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing Series,
now in its 13th year, has over 30 series events
planned across the U.S. and Canada with over 800
licensed racers involved.

CANNONBALL
ONE LAP OF AMERICA
Tire Rack One Lap of America is eight
days of competition featuring some of the
fastest street-legal cars on a number of
America’s most challenging racetracks! The
2011 Tire Rack One Lap of America is the 28th
edition of Brock Yates’ extreme challenge for driving
enthusiasts. This year’s event will test the endurance of the vehicles and
their drivers as they transit from venue to venue for over 3,500 miles at legal
speeds, as well as their performance during timed competition.
This year’s event will begin at Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana with
registration on Friday, April 29th. Competition starts the following morning at 9:00 a.m. when Tire Rack will host
One Lap of America competitors to a Wet Skid Pad Challenge. Finishing positions in the Wet Skid Pad Challenge
are awarded by measuring and averaging the maximum cornering forces each vehicle generates driving laps in
both directions on the test track’s 200' diameter wet skid pad.
Competitors will begin their weeklong trek stopping off at many of America’s premier racetracks for timed
competition, including the Daytona International Speedway. They will return to Tire Rack for the final competitive
event on Saturday morning, May 7th from 9:00 a.m. until noon for a Dry Skid Pad Challenge (with Mother Nature’s
cooperation), which will be followed by the now infamous victory tire burnout celebration and awards.
Spectators are welcome to visit Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana to see the cars during their final preparation
while they are completing registration and to watch both skidpad events. Admission and parking are free.
