Actually I was quite amazed at the large turn out and how punctual everyone was for a January meeting. Something about food being involved seems to create a draw. Again, I want to thank Steve Hammatt for putting the meeting place together and for Chris presenting the newly created DVD developed by the Horseless Carriage Education Institution. It looks like we have a good start on our yearly calendar of events with a few blanks for the months of August and October. If you have any ideas or suggestions for those months feel free to speak up and we will get something planned. That is a great time of the year for touring. It looks like the Ellis’, along with help from others, have a good start on our Fall Tour called “Panhandle Scramble”. As usual, Fred Cruger has come up with an awesome looking logo. As I ramble on here it is towards the end of January and February is quickly approaching. The way I view this time of the year is it is the beginning of the car auction season and February starts the swap meet season. In fact today we wrapped up attending a week full of exciting car auctions in Arizona. I know most of you have seen the Barrett-Jackson Auction on TV and many of you have attended. Did you know there are at least five other auctions going on at the same time? There were some very nice and desirable cars, some so-so cars and a whole lot of who-really-cares cars. By my way of thinking there were many cars I would like to have but they do not quite fit my budget, some cars that might fit my budget but I really don’t need and then the ones you could not give me. Among those cars sold that I would like to see in my shop and you might like also, included a 1911 Lozier and a 1913 Pierce-Arrow from the Craig McCaw collection. Perhaps you were one of the mysterious phone bidders. I saw Con Page - 3 - Fletcher there and he had his eye on that Lozier. I did bid on another car but backed off when I realized it would have been too nice and expensive to justify driving on the street, so I rationalized; if I wouldn’t drive it, I shouldn’t buy it. That logic saved me a lot of money. Hopefully we can get Chris to write an article about the auctions. If you are working on your calendar for the year you might consider two special Swap Meets coming up. Chickasha comes about the middle of March and Bakersfield the middle of April. We will try to have the February meeting on Saturday the 13th in Puyallup about 1:00. This should give you time to cruise through the Early Bird Swap Meet at the Fairgrounds. Ray Markley put this together, the details of which are found elsewhere in the newsletter. See you at the next meeting after the swap meet. May the Brass be with you! Harold Musolf III & Steve Hammatt have graciously agreed to work on this. Meeting was put on hold at this point to eat our lunch. It reconvened at 12:45 pm. Chris Brewer & Steve Hammatt showed a video produced by the Horseless Carriage Education Institution, on which Chris Brewer serves as secretary. The Institution’s mission is to educate the public about the brass car era, 1895-1915; not only about the automobiles, but also about the clothes and music. Chris is also helping to write curriculum to be used with the video in schools. Fred Cruger and Tom Brethauer received ‘highest honors’ for their efforts with the website and Brass Ramblings, respectively. They will receive awards at the National Convention in Florida. Congratulations Fred and Tom! Mark Shaw moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Bob Streiter. Meeting adjourned at 1:35 PM. Page - 5 - 1922 Ford Sedan (Centerdoor). 146,060 Sedans were produced in 1922 and sold for $645. I found this car a few years ago and it came from Keller Bros Ford, in Buffalo Springs, PA, approx. 35 miles east of Hershey, PA. Keller Bros Ford is a family owned business dating back to the early twenties and is still family owned today. Interesting thing about this dealership is they still possess approx. 100 cars they had sold and received back as trade-ins dating from the 1920’s up to approx. 1980. I hope to be close to having this car completed by the end of 2016. KISS Tour on Facebook The photo showing the building is the original Keller Bros Ford dealership building. When we were removing this car, there were (4) more T’s inside, including a 1920 Roadster, which was a low mileage original, which was nearly perfect condition, including side curtains. An airplane was also inside. There has been a Facebook public page created by Steve Schmidt for the KISS 1 and 2 cylinder tour, which will be from July 7-10,, 2016, in Waterville, WA, based out of the historic Waterville Inn (Note: venue will NOT accept reservations until March 18, 2016). Howard Musolf is coordinating this event. Please give him a call at 206-919-1949 to learn more. Keep in mind that you will need to have a Facebook account to view or join this group on Facebook. There are pictures and video of the last two tours, with more additions of photos anticipated, including updates on the upcoming July tour. This is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/9858420681 25544/permalink/985843288125422/ From within Facebook, you can also search for the title.... “Kiss Registry of the HCCA” You’ll know you’ve arrived if you see this main page logo: This car has no rust and body is very solid. I would not have planned on restoration, but they had sandblasted and primed the body, so this forces a restoration. Running gear has been all restored. So far, I’ve gotten the seats re-done. Next step is having the nickel work replated. Anyone with a 1 or 2 cylinder car and an interest is encouraged to come on this tour regardless of whether you join or view the group on Facebook. An Exercise In Title Transfer by Pat Farrell After purchasing our 1910 Kissel Kar model D 10 in November 2015, the seller didn't mail us our car's title until January 4th, 2016. In the State of Washington, one has 15 days to transfer ownership of a motor vehicle or a late fine will be imposed. My California seller was now living in Texas, and the Kissel Kar was still stored at his brother's home in Pasadena, CA. His brother was the one that had signed the Kissel's November "bill of sale" for $115,000. On January 8th, 2016, I went to the Sedro-Woolley DMV for title transfer and Page - 6 - I was told that my "bill of sale" was no good as I had made a correction on it. (I had accidentally dated the bill of sale 2010 instead of 2015 and I had made a correction.) Corrections on a "bill of sale" voids the "bill of sale". A late fine would also have to be imposed because the excessive delay in title transfer. Sales tax was now due on the car for either the "bill of sale" purchase price or on its appraised value, whichever was higher. As there wasn't anything listed in the DMV's Old Car's Weekly Price Guide for a Kissel Kar, DMV told me that I would have to have the Bellingham office of Washington Department of Revenue appraise the car for sales tax purposes. I was given their appraiser's phone number out of Olympia's Department of Revenue Office. After about 20 minutes on the telephone, and being switched from office to office, I finally had the correct person to talk to. He didn't have any information on our 1910 Kissel Kar model D10, and I explained to him that he wouldn't have any information because there wasn't but two of the model D10's left in the world. The appraiser Googled "1910 Kissel Kar" and he came up with a model D10 for sale in San Dimas, CA for $135,000. I explained to him that "it was the same car and that it had been for sale since February 2015 at $135,000. The seller had lowered his price to make the sale." I told him to "call the seller to verify that is what I had paid." The appraiser finally accepted my explanation, and then he called Bellingham to tell them what appraisal figure that he had arrived at. Making out a new bill of sale having a current date, being made out without any corrections, and having my California title in hand for the Kissel Kar, I paid my $10,000 sales tax in Bellingham, I did the title transfer in Mount Vernon, and now the car is in our names. Lots of leg work! Page - 7 - The car has a 350 cubic inch 50 hp rated engine with a 4 speed and is our first gas powered brass era car. Member Auto Profiled: By Keene Brewer My 1912, Abbott-Detroit is a seven passenger model 44, serial number 5074. During this time period Abbott-Detroit used the Continental engine, and mine is stamped with the date of 0929-1911. With a 4.5” bore and a 5.5” stroke the engine is rated at 45 to 53 horsepower. The three speed, H pattern transmission receives power from the engine through a multi disc clutch and transfers power to a Timken differential. This car is painted red (I cannot find a trace of blue anywhere), is brass, and has electric lights, a generator and a factory starter. It was my good fortune that Lorne Walters, in Chilliwack, B.C., was willing to sell me this Abbott-Detroit. Before I bought the car I contacted Fred Cruger and Gale Wilson, both owning a 1912 Abbott-Detroit model 44 in different configurations to help me authenticate what a 1912 Abbott should be. Although I found some 1912 Abbotts that were brass, my research told me most were nickel and painted blue. They did not come with a generator or a self-starter. The side lanterns and tail lamp came with a wick and reservoir for kerosene but also had an electric bulb in the back of the lanterns. Since the car did not come with a generator one had to recharge the battery after using the electric lights. In 1912, Abbott-Detroit’s were sold through John Deere Plow Co. dealerships. Apparently 1912 models were over produced or undersold as I have a letter dated June 13, 1913, from the John Deere Plow Co. in Dallas, Texas offering unsold cars to the dealers at a discount from $2050 down to $1400. The letter goes on to offer a dynamo (generator) for an extra $75. Speculating here, I think my car was built very late in the fall of 1911, as a 1912 model because of the brass, red color and engine date. It probably did not get sold and sat parked all year and into 1913. The factory came out with a selfstarter in 1913, which this car has. It is driven off the front of the crankshaft, as opposed to being driven off the flywheel, by means of a chain and Sprague clutch (sometimes called an overrunning clutch, engages in one direction as the car is started and then releases and freewheels as the engine starts). It also has a dynamo. Again I suspect the car was left over and in order to get it sold the customer demanded it have the latest options like a starter and generator or they would buy a 1913 model. California to Jekyll Island, Georgia 1985: Portland to Portland Tour, Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon 1986: New York to Vancouver, B.C. for the Expo ‘86 According to the newspaper articles I have, the 1976 event was touted as the “Around the World Auto Race” and sanctioned as a bicentennial event. The race was supposed to be a modern day rendition of the Great Race of 1908. Originally the cars were routed through Russia and China to complete the circuit, but the governments of those countries refused permission for passage of the vehicles, so the race was reconfigured. The cars were shipped to Istanbul, Turkey, to begin the race. May Beth Benore (Mary Elizabeth) accompanied her husband in the race and according to the articles they carried no spare parts. They raced across Turkey, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, West Germany, Belgium, France and England. In England the competitors and their cars boarded the Queen Elizabeth II and sailed to New York City to begin their race across America. This car has some unique history. It came from Ohio and it is thought to have been bought by a high ranking government official. I have the names of the owners back to 1921. This car was most actively toured from 1967 through 2002 when it was owned by Russell L. Benore, who was apparently quite the antique car enthusiast. He owned the Hobby Center Toy Store Chain headquartered in Toledo, Ohio. Under his ownership the car completed the following tours: 1976: The Tour of Europe and the race from New York to San Francisco 1979: Can-Am Transcontinental Tour, Key West, Florida to Halifax, New Brunswick 1982: Pacific to Atlantic Tour, Pebble Beach, Page - 8 - Along with the Abbott in the race there was a 1914 Dodge Touring, a 1911 Model T Ford and dropping out of the race in New York was a 1909 Franklin. The race was scheduled to finish in San Francisco on August 5th but the Abbott crossed the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco first on August 4, 1976, covering 6,157 miles. Prior to Mr. Benore’s ownership, the car had been owned for eighteen years by Gerald P. Openlander a former US Attorney, living in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, near Toledo.
