Spring 2006 - Golf Card International
OFFICIAL MEMBER NEWSLETTER OF GOLF CARD INTERNATIONAL SPRING • 2006 • VOLUME 30 • NUMBER 1 INSIDE Scenic High Hampton Inn in Cashiers, North Carolina is host to one of four Golf Card Member-Guest Tournaments this Spring. Member’s Tee Member Ron Strayhorn was consistently hitting his shots to the right. So he targeted Golf Card’s exclusive Member’s Tee benefit and we got him aligned with noted teacher and PGA professional Tim Peightal, author of hundreds of instructional articles and coach to several LPGA and PGA Tour players. Through a few specific drills and getting Ron to understand why he was straying off target, Tim was able to straighten out Ron in less than an hour! 6 Golf Card Giveaway SPRING SLAM Wherever you live – east, southeast, midwest, west – we have a Golf Card Member Tournament scheduled nearby this May and June as part of our Spring Slam Series. Four tournaments will be held within a four-week span, starting May 17 with the Illinois Member-Guest at the four-star Rail Golf Club. On June 1, we travel to the Nevele Grande Resort, another four-star course, for the popular Catskill Member-Guest. This event sold out in 2005 when it was held at the Villa Roma Resort. From the Nevele, it’s on to North Carolina June 11-16 for the High Hampton Spring Classic or the Nevada Reunion Tournament in Carson City, also being held the week of June 11. By adding more tournaments and spreading them nationwide, we hope more members can benefit from these popular outings. They are a great way to meet other members, spend a day with friends, enjoy a little competition and indulge in some great food and fun. All for a speciallyarranged Golf Card price that is hard to beat. Below is a preview of each of the Spring Slam tournaments with complete registration information. The rescue curve. BRANFORD, CT – There may be an answer to those putts that curl out of the hole or miss by a few inches. On a beautiful golf course in this seaside town in Connecticut, sixteen golfers of various handicaps armed with eleven of the best putters in the game were ready to start a putting match when a bystander suggested they include his club in the competition. They agreed and a match of over 800 putts ensued. On average, the sleeper club was one-third more accurate than the other eleven. This caused quite a stir. Putts can account for 50% or more of a golfer’s total strokes. Increasing their accuracy by a third would drop scores dramatically. So everyone, including me, cornered the bystander to find out why his club was so effective. “What’s going on here?” we asked. His answer follows. Automatically corrects errors “ The Condor® P-4 (the club’s name) is the only putter in the world that automatically corrects putting’s four most common errors, a push, pull, chop and scoop. These tiny mis-strokes are probably the most costly errors in golf. The slightest turn of the club head at impact will push or pull a ball off course, a slight scoop or chop will cause it to bounce or skid. Any one of these errors will cost at least one stroke. “The secret’s in the curved face of the P-4. It’s almost too small to see. Here, run your finger over it. Feel the horizontal and vertical curves? The horizontal curve automatically rescues a push and pull; the vertical curve rescues a chop and scoop. No The Secret Scientific design of putter’s face automatically corrects errors in golfer’s stroke. Could drop scores dramatically. matter which of these errors you commit, within limits, the P-4 will rectify it by presenting a surface to How it works New design automatically corrects bad putts Push Pull the ball that remains on target. If the golfer scoops or chops his stroke, his putt still rolls smoothly. The vertical curve automatically compensates for the error. “This is powerful stuff, but it’s not the whole story. The long target line across the top of the club lets a golfer align his putt more accurately, and keeps his take-away on a straight line. The solid white blocks on either side of the sighting line tell him when the club head is parallel to the ground. This is critical on sloping greens. “I knew the P-4 would show up the others when I invited myself in, but by a third? And against their own putters! My company already guarantees a golfer must cut at least four strokes with it, or he gets his money back. We may up that to six.” No charge unless it works Want to challenge your own putter’s accuracy, and pay only if the P4 beats it? The company gives you 30 days to play the P-4 and, as the party-crashing bystander said, it will refund the price, if you don’t cut four strokes and return it. You can save about $30.00 off the club’s store price by calling the distributor direct at 1-800285-3900 anytime, or by clicking on www.ngcgolf.com. You can also mail your name, address and check (or cc number and exp. date) to NGC Golf (Dept. PF35), 60 Church Street, Yalesville, CT 06492. The Condor® P-4 costs $99.00. A second one can be bought at wholesale for only $69.00. S/h is only $14.95 for one or two putters. CT add sales tax. The clubs come with free head covers. PF-6 © NGC Worldwide, Inc. 2006 Dept. PF-35 3 JUST IN…PREVIEWS OF THE NEWEST GOLF CARD COURSES “Mass” Appeal The Legends of Massillon, one of Ohio’s top public courses, is now accepting the Golf Card from June-September at a reduced rate of $25 anytime on weekdays and after 2 p.m. on weekend/holidays. In May and October, the rate drops to $20. Rated 31⁄2 stars by Golf Digest, The Legends is a 27-hole facility with water on 22 of the 27 holes and more than 80 sand bunkers. Large greens and four sets of tees, however, make the course playable for all skill levels. Owned and operated by the City of Massillon, The Legends is conveniently located in northeast Ohio, an easy ride from Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown. The course staff is known for its excellent customer service. A new superintendent and more aggressive maintenance schedule are reasons to believe the Legends will regain the 41⁄2 star rating it held a few years ago. Reidy Creek Golf Course is a one-of-a-kind executive course featuring some of the best par-3 holes anywhere. Surrounded by rugged hills and grassy parkland in a rural Escondido setting, this new par-54 course is what more course owners should shoot for – challenging, unique and fun holes that everyone can enjoy. Measuring 2,621 yards from the back tees, the 18 holes play through a natural valley, providing the course with a rolling terrain that ensures each hole has its own identity. Fairways follow the naturally undulating landscape while the course's greens are protected by water features and sculpted bunkers. The Golf Card fee is $27 weekdays and $32 weekends. Arrowood Golf Club is a Ted Robinson classic, devoid of any surrounding houses or development – a true rarity in the San Diego area. With most of the course bordering protected natural riparian habitats, solitude and tranquility come into play as much as the undulating terrain, ocean breezes and water hazards. Robinson describes Arrowood “like running through rapids…that’s the feeling the design should give golfers. There are calm stretches allowing one to relax, punctuated by moments when the blood should be racing.” JC Golf operates and manages seven other courses in the San Diego area – six of which accept the Golf Card. Those six are: Twin Oaks GC, Oaks North GC, The Auld Course, Temecula Creek Inn, Rancho Bernardo Inn and Mount Woodson. Encinitas Ranch is also managed by JC Golf, but is not a Golf Card affiliate at this time. Unbelievable But Unranked George Peper is finally talking. The man who helped create GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 rankings now admits the system is flawed and that many courses included in the rankings probably shouldn’t be and vice versa. Peper, now a contributor to LINKS Magazine, details his reservations about GOLF Magazine’s system and other Top 100 rankings in the March issue of LINKS. Among his biggest concerns, Peper says raters didn’t visit enough courses and singling out 100 courses is too little. That said, Peper went on to recognize courses that he feels have been slighted – courses that haven’t earned Top 100 distinction, but probably should have. He includes two of Golf Card’s best – The Links of North Dakota and The Links at Crowbush Cove in Prince Edward Island. About Links of North Dakota, Peper says, “…those who make it to this distant outpost are rewarded. Though it’s not a true links, the windswept fairways and prairie-grass rough make for a reasonable facsimile. And while renowned Sand Hills may be more serene, the views here – overlooking Lake Sakawea – are better.” COURSE REVIEWS Spring is here and that means it’s the ideal time to play courses in North Carolina and the Middle Atlantic region – either on your way home from winter vacation, as a spring getaway trip or if you just live in the area. Here are some Golf Card courses that your fellow members recommend: NORTH CAROLINA Foxfire CC (Foxfire Village) “Somewhat out of the way but worth it. Course is marked well (yardage to reach water marked on tees, water marked with flags, yardages in fairways numerous). Fair test from regular tees, only play from tips if you are a single digit handicap. Beautiful setting, runs through development, but still not encroached upon. Beautiful views of Lockwood River. If in the Holden Beach/Myrtle Beach, Lockwood is definitely worth playing.” Longleaf G&CC (Southern Pines) “Wide open fairways, lovely area. Large, rolling greens. Deserves better than 3 stars by Golf Digest.” Twin Oaks GC (Statesville) “This is a great public course, considering some of the others I’ve played…Although not a world-class golf course, this is a great course for weekend warriors to maintain their game.” MARYLAND Ocean Resorts GC (Berlin) “We enjoyed this course so much we played it twice during our trip. We look forward to playing it again in 2006. A great course for the price!!!” VIRGINIA Packsaddle Ridge (Keezeltown) “I’ve played here three times and will return each spring. Beautiful view of the mountains.” The Links of Crowbush Cove, according to Peper, “unfolds on a range of seaside dunes. Nearby Highland Links has gotten all of the attention, including a berth on GOLF [Magazine’s] list, but this 12-year old Thomas McBroom design is in better condition and has earned the loyalty of the locals.” To read Peper’s full article, go to linksmagazine.com 6 Member’s TEE THE LESSON Tim had Ron warm up and asked him to go through his regular pre-shot routine. He started with a 7-iron and his ball was generally 10 yards right of his target. With his driver, he was regularly 25-30 yards right of target. Tim identified three obvious problems: PROBLEM NO. 1 Ron would position his body first, aiming at the intended target, and then position his club. Member on the Tee: . . . . . . .Ron Strayhorn (right in photo above) Instructor: . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Tim Peightal Location: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Pelican Bay Country Club (Daytona, Florida) Lesson: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Consistently hitting ball to the right of target About Tim Peightal Tim Peightal has students who currently play on the LPGA and Nike Tours. Starting his career with the Disney golf operations, he has worked with some of the top instructors, including Bob Toski, Jim Flick, Bill Strausbaugh and Davis Love Jr. Tim later worked with the 1928 U.S. Open Champion Johnny Farrell at the Country Club of Florida and the 1935 PGA Champion Johnny Revolta at the Evanston Golf Club (IL). Tim has written hundreds of articles on golf instruction and his tips can be found on various golf websites. Tim’s goal as a teacher is to find as many ways possible to make learning the game of golf fun. “After all is said and done,” he says, “it’s still just a game.” Tim feels that every golfer is an individual and that there is no one method that fits everyone. Ron’s tendency to hit his shots to the right starts with his alignment — his feet are aimed way right of the target while his shoulders are pointed in a different direction Solution: Tim explained that this was backwards – that he should position his club first, aiming it at the target and then position his body parallel to the club but to the left of the target. Tim suggested Ron think of alignment as railroad tracks with his ball and clubface on one track and his shoulders and feet on the other track. Both tracks are par- In order to get his alignment in sync, Ron worked on getting his shoulders and feet aimed in the same direction. allel to to one another, but the “track” that your feet and body are on is obviously left of the ball and clubface track. Tim suggested to Ron that his intended target should look to his eye that it's a bit to the right of where his feet are aimed. Drill: Lay two clubs on the ground parallel to each other, the right one (the ball) towards the target, the left one (your feet) just left of the target. Instructor Tim Peightal used two clubs to set up railroad tracks — an effective visual aid to help Ron position his feet and shoulders on a parallel target line to the club and ball. 7 PROBLEM NO. 2 Ron’s ball flight was decidedly left to right, generally caused by the closing of the face of his club on takeaway and then opening during the downswing. Solution: Ron needs to create a feeling of rotation in his arms during the forward swing, right hand over left. By adjusting his grip so his right hand is weaker and adjusting his swing so that it’s more of a horizontal swing, Ron will get the feeling of proper wrist rotation. 1 The other big reason why Ron consistently hit to the right was lack of arm rotation during the forward swing. He needed to feel his right wrist turning over his left to square the club at impact. To help Ron do this, (1) Tim weakened Ron’s right-hand grip (moved it under the shaft more), (2) worked on swinging the club horizontally so (3) the clubface opens on the takeaway and closes on the forward swing as the wrists roll closed. Finally, Tim had Ron (4) move the ball up in is stance so the (5) right hand rotates over the left at the bottom of the swing. 4 3 5 Drill: Practice swinging the club on a horizontal plane, like a baseball bat, and feel the club opening on the backswing as the wrists roll open and closing on the forward swing as the wrists roll closed. The first 25 percent of the backswing should result in the clubface being perpendicular to the ground. PROBLEM NO. 3 In addition to the lack of proper wrist rotation, Ron’s open clubface at impact was due in part to his ball position, closer to the middle of his stance. Solution: Tim asked him to move the ball position forward and to try to feel the fastest point in his swing at or right before impact. 2 Drill: Set up with ball in normal place, move club back three inches to the right, then move feet three inches to the right as well. At the bottom of the swing you should feel a real snap in your arms as the right hand rotates over the left. Over time, this should result in a right to left ball flight. TIPS TO REMEMBER 1. Alignment – set club first, body second. Your feet and shoulders should be aimed left of the intended target. Think railroad tracks. 2. Watch your right hand grip – make sure it is not too strong preventing the club from rotating properly 3. Rotate arms, right over left during the downswing 4. Get the club square at impact. Try to imagine the toe of the club getting to the ball first. MEMBER’S TEE is a benefit that allows Golf Card members to write in with swing problems or flaws. We will review these submissions and choose one to be addressed in each issue of Golf Traveler. It’s our intention to have experienced PGA professionals at Golf Card–affiliated courses provide in-person, step-by-step lessons — with detailed photos — to help correct the swing problem or flaw. So if your swing or some aspect of your game is letting you down, simply e-mail us at [email protected] with the problems you’re experiencing. Please include a brief description of what your swing tendencies are and what you’d like to see corrected. We look forward to your submissions and helping in any way we can. GOLFERS! M y husband and I love to golf and with the Golf Card it’s much more affordable. We have played almost all the courses in our home state and a few when we traveled. We enjoyed savings at Tomacy’s in Adams, NY. Partridge Run in Canton, NY. The list goes on and on. We play with family members and friends that have the Card and have never been disappointed in a course. We have a funny story to tell. While playing C-Way golf course in Clayton, NY, we were playing with my cousin and her husband and were having a wonderful time, that is until her husband hits one right into the woods. He goes in to find the ball and his wife decides to hit her ball and not wait for him. She hits, it goes into the woods and HITS HIM on the arm. He comes out yelling of course. Well, we take a few minutes to settle down and seeing his arm is bothering him, he decides to let her drive the cart. He is in the process of putting his clubs in his bag when she puts the cart in REVERSE (we think by mistake) and BACKS into him. He is mad at this point as you can imagine and takes over the driving. Well her golf bag comes loose and falls off the cart, and so now they are both out of the cart, picking up clubs and balls and not very happy with one another. Naturally he is saying she is trying to kill him and she is saying he doesn’t care about her clubs, so the next time she got up to hit, he takes her clubs off the cart and leaves her with us to finish the game. He goes back to the clubhouse. She had just hit an amazing drive and wants to keep on playing — she doesn’t care if he is mad or not, she wants to see what score she gets, and the course if beautiful. So we finished playing and she came in with the lowest score she has ever had. She got a 44 and was one happy golfer. When we got back to the clubhouse he has fallen asleep in his truck and she never told him how great she golfed until weeks later. Austin The Golf Card welcomes Jimmy Clay Golf Course, Roy Kizer Golf Course, Lions Golf Club and Morris Williams Golf Course – all part of the well-run City of Austin (Texas) Parks and Recreation Department. All four courses will offer Golf Card members 2 for 1 greens fee (carts required). The current rates are $22 weekday and $30 weekend. The cart fee is $22. So two Golf Card members can play during the week for $22 per person with cart and $30 per person on weekends with a cart – an excellent value! Kizer Golf Course is considered Austin’s premier municipal course. Designed by noted Texas architect Joe Finger on an abandoned wastewater plant, the links-style layout, spreads over almost 200 acres and is bordered by cedars, elms and oaks. More than 35 acres of lakes and 22 acres of wetlands have been created for resident and migratory waterfowl. Despite the large amount of water, Kizer is suitable for players of all levels. With Kizer, Jimmy Clay Golf Course is part of a 36- hole complex designed by Finger. Shorter and flatter than Kizer, Clay is more of a parkland setting surrounded by trees. The course is characterized by its relatively large, elevated greens, and forgiving tee shots. Lions Golf Club was actually built by the local Lions Club in 1928, making it one of Austin’s oldest courses. It has long been considered the city’s most popular course and has hosted such notable golfers as Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. While the “old muni” has changed over the years it remains a very playable, challenging test. Very short by today’s standards at just over 6,000 yards, its relatively narrow, tree- lined fairways and small greens keep all players honest. Morris Williams Golf Course opened in 1964 as Austin's third municipal Course. Designed by Leon Howard, one of the most prolific golf course architects of the time, the course features small, slightly elevated, contoured greens. These features combined with the rolling terrain probably make Morris Williams Golf Course the most difficult of all of the City's courses. However, the recent addition of ladies tees and the improved turf make the course playable for all levels of golfers. Morris Williams Golf Course was named after Morris Williams Jr., potentially the best golfer ever developed in Austin. He won everything in Austin area, as well as, the Texas Junior Championships and the National Air Force Trophy now named in his honor. He lost his life as a young man during the Korean War in a Florida jet plane crash. Framed by trees, Jimmy Clay Golf Course is a classic parkland layout. Morris Williams served for many years as the home of the University of Texas golf teams under legendary coaches Harvey Penick and George Hannon. During this time the 13 Making Contact Austin Jimmy Clay Golf Course 512-444-0999 • www.ci.austintx.us\parksgolf Golf Card fee: 2 for 1 Roy Kizer Golf Course 512-444-0999 • www.ci.austintx.us\parksgolf Golf Card fee: 2 for 1 Kizer Golf Course is one of Austin’s best, a links-style design by renowned Texas architect Joe Finger. University won 2 NCAA Championships with teams that featured Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. Houston Brock Park Golf Course and Gus Wortham Golf Course, two venerable and popular courses owned by the City of Houston have also joined the Golf Card network. Brock Park Golf Course is considered one of the “best kept secrets” in Houston after undergoing renovations in 2004. Owned by the City of Houston since 1972, Brock Park is a tightly-routed, rolling layout that traverses the Bayou River. Better golfers appreciate the challenge of the small greens and narrow, tree-lined fairways while higher handicappers can enjoy the fairness of its relatively short length. Gus Wortham Park Golf Course is situated along Brays Bayou in the south central area of Houston, just minutes from downtown. Elevation changes and three consecutive par fives on the front nine distinguish Gus Wortham from other Houston-area courses. Generous fairways appeal to all levels of golfers. ì The Lions Golf Club 512-477-6963 • www.ci.austintx.us\parksgolf Golf Card fee: 2 for 1 Morris Williams Golf Course 512-926-6539 • www.ci.austintx.us\parksgolf Golf Card fee: 2 for 1 Houston Brock Park Golf Course 281-458-1350 • www.houstontx.gov/municipalgolf Golf Card fee: 2 for 1 Gus Wortham Park Golf Course 713-928-4260 • www.houstontx.gov/municipalgolf Golf Card fee: 2 for 1 14 NEW AFFILIATES (Since January 2006) CALIFORNIA ESCONDIDO Reidy Creek GC (760)740-2450, 2300 N Broadway Web www.jcgolf.com Facility Daily Fee Fee Wkdys $27, wknds $32 Holes 18 Yardage 2582/1658 Availability Anytime, not valid for hol, tournaments or groups, rates subject to change #Rounds Unlimited OCEANSIDE Arrowood GC (760)967-8400, 5201A Village Dr Web www.jcgolf.com Facility Daily Fee Fee MonThu $50, Fri $58, wknds $78 Holes 18 Yardage 6721/5861 Availability Wkdys anytime, wknds after 11am, not valid for hol, tournament or groups, rates subject to change #Rounds Unlimited COLORADO LA VETA Grandote Peaks GC (719)742-3391, 5540 Highway 12 Web www.grandotepeaks.com Facility Daily Fee Fee Apr-May & Oct 20% off green fee, Jun-Sep 50% off green fee, cart required Holes 18 Yardage 7085/5608 Availability Mon-Thu after 10am #Rounds 2 FLORIDA OCALA Lake Diamond GC (352)687-8500, 16 Golf View Dr Facility Semi-Private Fee $20 +tax Holes 18 Yardage 6650/5135 Availability Anytime #Rounds Unlimited ILLINOIS WHITTINGTON Rend Lake GC (618)629-2353, 12476 Golf Course Dr Web www.rendlake.org Facility Municipal Fee 2 for 1 green fees Holes 27 Yardage 3419/3442/3393/2430/2415/2395 Availability Tue-Thu 10am-3pm #Rounds Unlimited INDIANA CLAYTON Deer Creek GC (317)539-2013, 7143 S State Rd 39 Web www.deercreekgolfclub.com Facility Daily Fee Fee $25 Holes 18 Yardage 6510/5033 Availability Mon-Thu anytime, Fri-Sun & hol after 1pm #Rounds 2 MARION Arbor Trace GC (765)662-8236, 2500 E 550 N Web www.arbortracegc.com Facility Daily Fee Fee Wkdys $20 -
