UN DÉBUT DE SIÈCLE PROMETTEUR
A PROMISING START TO THE CENTURY
Le 18 janvier, Numa Emile
Descombes et Ulysse Georges
Perret, horlogers loclois de talent,
fondent une société spécialisée
dans la fabrication de montres
compliquées. Cinq mois plus tard,
ils déposent un brevet pour l’invention d’une montre à 12 et 24 heures
avec disque mobile sautant instantanément. Rapidement, le commerce vers l’étranger se développe
et la production suscite l’enthousiasme. La grande aventure commence…
Au décès d’Emile Descombes,
en 1897, Perret s’associe à
Louis Edouard Berthoud pour
fabriquer des montres de poche
complètes. Un an plus tard, Perret
& Berthoud présente l’Universal
Watch Extra, chronographe doté
d’un compteur de 30 minutes.
Avec son chronographe-bracelet,
produit en 1917, l’entreprise sera la
première à réagir à la disparition
progressive de la montre de
poche… et à se tailler une place de
choix dans l’histoire de l’horlogerie.
On January 18 th, Numa Emile
Descombes and Ulysse Georges
Perret, two talented watchmakers
from Le Locle, founded a company
specialising in making complicated
watches. Five months later, they
filed a patent for the invention of
a 12 and 24-hour watch with
instant-jump mobile disc. An export
trade soon developed and production aroused considerable enthusiasm. It was the start of a grand
adventure…
Upon the death of Emile
Descombes, in 1897, Perret associated with Louis Edouard Berthoud
to make complete pocket-watches.
A year later, Perret and Berthoud
presented a chronograph equipped
with a 30-minute chronograph.
With its first wristworn chronograph, produced in 1917, the company was the first to react to the
gradual disappearance of the
pocket-watch… and to carve itself
a significant place in watchmaking
history.

Désormais installée à Genève, l’entreprise prend le nom d’Universal
Watch Co. Ltd. et connaît un bel
essor sous la direction de Raoul
Perret, fils du fondateur. Les
montres sont signées «Universal
Genève» et se distinguent par leur
élégance et leur technicité. Un style
est né, et avec lui des modèles
de légende. Que ce soit avec le
Compax, l’Aero-Compax ou le
Tri-Compax (1930-40), la Polerouter
(1954) ou le Microtor UG 66 (1966),
la marque se singularise par la
nouveauté de ses modèles et de
ses mouvements.
Now relocated in Geneva, the company was renamed Universal Watch
Co. Ltd and enjoyed a spectacular
boom period under the leadership
of the founder’s son, Raoul Perret.
The watches carried the “Universal
Genève” signature and were distinguished by their elegance and their
technical sophistication.
A style was born, and with it a
number of legendary models.
Whether through the Compax,
the Aero-Compax, the Tri-Compax
(1930-40), the Polerouter (1954)
or the Microrotor UG 66 (1966),
the brand stood out for the novel
inventiveness of its models and
movements.

Dès les années 1960, fidèle à
son esprit d’innovation, Universal
Genève se pose en précurseur de la
vague des mouvements à quartz et
lance, en 1975, le calibre de ce
type le plus plat du monde. Durant
les années 1980-90, la marque
jouit d’une réputation internationale
considérable et d’une présence sur
des marchés comme l’Asie du
Sud-Est, le Moyen-Orient ou encore
l’Italie.
Animée depuis 2005 par une nouvelle équipe de direction passionnée et forte d’une stratégie de
développement mesurée, Universal
Genève renforce chaque année ses
collections et réaffirme son style.
Ainsi, si les modèles 2005 et 2006
revisitaient intelligemment le design
maison tout en respectant l’esprit
Universal Genève, l’arrivée du nouveau Microtor et la production en
série du calibre UG 101 confirment
définitivement le renouveau de la
marque.
From the 1960s onwards, in keeping with its spirit of innovation,
Universal Genève played a pioneering role in the wave of quartz movements, and in 1975 launched the
world’s thinnest calibre of this type.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the
brand enjoyed an impressive international reputation and a strong
presence on markets such as
South-East Asia, the Middle East
and Italy.
Headed since 2005 by a passionately dedicated management team
building on a strategy of measured
development, Universal Genève is
steadily reinforcing its collection
and reaffirming its style. While the
2005 and 2006 models intelligently
revisited the House design and
faithfully reflect the Universal
Genève spirit, the arrival of the new
Microtor and the series production
of the Calibre UG 101 definitively
confirm the brand renewal.

marque lance le Tri-Compax. Ce chronographe à compteur d’heures, muni
d’un calendrier triple date et phases de
lune, est l’un des plus grands succès
commerciaux du 20 e siècle dans le

Le style Universal Genève est reconnaissable entre tous. C’est la troisième
année que les designers de la Maison
s’attachent à le faire revivre. Après la
mythologie et l’universalité, la nouvelle
collection s’oriente vers un retour aux
sources, dans les deux sens du terme.
Le design des nouveautés joue les traits
d’union avec celui des garde-temps historiques de la marque, avec pour thème
l’eau, symbole de vie et de plénitude.
Aux familles de garde-temps pour
hommes lancées en 2006 – Microtor UG
100, Okeanos Compax, Okeanos AeroCompax et Okeanos Moon Chronograph
– s’ajoutent des nouveautés toujours
plus horlogères: le Microtor UG 101 en
acier, le chronographe Uni-Timer et le
Timer Chronograph. Si les modèles pour
hommes se font plus horlogers, l’Anthea
se fait plus joaillière avec une version
sertie de 46 diamants taille brillant et
une de 132 diamants taille brillant,
assemblées notamment sur des bracelets en galuchat.
The Universal Genève style is immediately recognisable. This is the third year
that the in-house designers are dedicating their talents to giving it a new lease on
life. After the themes of mythology and
universality, the new collection sees a
return to roots, with the design of the new
releases reflecting that of the brand’s
historical timepieces and inspired by
water – a symbol of life and plenitude.
The men’s watch lines launched in 2006
– Microtor UG 100, Okeanos Compax,
Okeanos Aero-Compax and Okeanos
Moon Chronograph – are now enriched
by even more distinctly horological new
models: the Microtor UG 101 in steel,
the Uni-Timer chronograph and the
Timer Chronograph. While men’s
watches are becoming more technical,
Anthea is adopting a more jewelleryoriented approach in a version set with
46 brilliant-cut diamonds and another
with 132 brilliant-cut diamonds, fitted
among other options with a stingray
strap.

Tous les modèles de la collection 2007/
2008 bénéficient de l’amour des matériaux nobles et du travail parfait cher à
Universal Genève. Les boîtes des
montres hommes ont vu leurs formes
redessinées afin d’offrir une esthétique
plus contemporaine et une plus grande
ergonomie: les cornes ont été légèrement allongées et les lunettes affinées,
laissant au cadran une plus grande
ouverture. Tous les modèles Uni-Timer,
Timer Chronograph et Moon Chronograph
sont équipés d’un nouveau rotor revidé,
gravé en relief et doré, dont le décor –
un soleil – est cohérent avec le thème de
l’universalité cher à la marque.
Petit détail esthétique non négligeable, le
Superluminova fait son apparition sur les
aiguilles, conférant à certains modèles
un aspect sport chic. Enfin, Universal
Genève a conçu pour son fermoir
déployant un design de boucle exclusif:
une coiffe intégrant deux boutonspoussoirs latéraux. Unique car fabriquée
spécialement pour la marque, chaque
pièce constitue un gage de qualité et
une signature. Le design de la coiffe
reprend exactement le dessin de la bouclette ardillon des modèles or de la
collection 2006.
All models in the 2007/2008 collection
benefit from the love of noble materials
and of perfect workmanship cherished
by Universal Genève. The cases of the
men’s watches have been treated to
redesigned shapes in order to give them
a more contemporary aesthetic appeal
and enhanced ergonomics: the lugs have
been slightly extended and the bezels
trimmed down to ensure a broader
dial opening. All the Uni-Timer, Timer
Chronograph and the Moon Chronograph
models are equipped with a new
hollowed, relief-engraved and gilded rotor
featuring a sun motif entirely consistent
with the theme of universality upheld by
the brand. Representing a significant
new aesthetic detail, the hands of
some models are now coated with
Superluminova to give them a sporting
chic look. Finally, Universal Genève has
designed an exclusive buckle design for
its folding clasp: a kind of cap incorporating two lateral pushbuttons. Unique in
that is specially built for the brand, this
cap represents a token of quality and a
genuine signature feature. Its design
exactly echoes that of the pin buckle on
the gold models in the 2006 collection.

années 1930, les horlogers de la
Manufacture présentent une
montre-bracelet pour hommes
dotée du calibre UG 138, affichant heures, minutes et petite
seconde.
The Universal Genève watchmakers were among the pioneers in
the development of self-winding
movements, particularly by
means of an integrated microoscillating weight that made
these calibres ultra-thin and gave
them a unique aura of elegance.
In the 1930s, the watchmakers of
the Manufacture presented a
men’s wristwatch equipped with
the UG 138 movement and displaying the hours, minutes and
seconds.

Le 27 mai 1955, l’entreprise dépose le
brevet no 329805 pour une montre à
remontoir automatique très plate comprenant une micro-masse avec axe de
rotation excentré: le 1er Microtor (calibre
UG 215) produit par Universal Genève
est né. Il n’affiche que les heures et les
minutes. Cette innovation technologique
majeure est rendue possible par les proportions parfaites des mécanismes de
démultiplication du remontoir automatique. La micro-masse, couplée à un
barillet de grand diamètre et pivotant
dans les 2 sens, permet une réserve de
marche de près de 48 heures.
La technologie du Microtor ne cesse
d’être améliorée. Ainsi le 30 janvier 1957
la Manufacture dépose un nouveau brevet pour un mouvement automatique
avec mobile de seconde au centre, comprenant une masse rotative avec axe
excentré. Ce mouvement dispose d’un
système de remontage automatique
simplifié, réduit l’épaisseur et améliore le
confort au porté grâce à l’absence de
choc au niveau de la masse oscillante.
Le réglage fin est néanmoins absent.
On May 27 th 1955, the company filed a
patent Nr 329805 for an extremely thin
self-winding watch comprising a microoscillating weight with an off-centred
rotation axis: the first Microtor (Calibre
UG 215) produced by Universal Genève
was born. It displayed only the hours
and minutes. This major technological
innovation was made possible by the
perfect proportions of the mechanisms
dedicated to the reduction of the automatic winding. The micro-oscillating
weight, coupled with a large-diameter
barrel pivoting in both directions,
ensured a power reserve of around
48 hours.
The Microtor technology was consistently improved. On January 30 th 1957,
the Manufacture filed a second patent
for a self-winding movement with central
seconds wheel and pinion, comprising
a rotating oscillating weight with offcentred axis. This movement featured a
simplified self-winding system, reducing
the thickness of the movement and
enhancing wearer comfort thanks to the
absence of shocks on the level of the
oscillating weight. It did not however
enable fine adjustment.

En 1966, à la Foire de Bâle, Universal
Genève présente une nouvelle gamme
de montres équipées du calibre automatique Microtor le plus plat du monde –
28 mm de diamètre pour 2,50 mm
d’épaisseur: l’UG 66, affichant seulement les heures et les minutes. La famille
des calibres UG 66 évoluera tout au long
des années 1960 et jusque dans les
années 1970, avec la création de deux
nouveaux Microtor, l’UG 71 et l’UG 72.
At the Basel trade fair in 1966, Universal
Genève presented a new range of
watches equipped with the world’s
thinnest self-winding Microtor movement measuring 28 mm in diameter and
a mere 2.50 mm thick: UG 66, displaying only the hours and minutes. The
family of UG 66 movements developed
throughout the 1960s and on into the
1970s, with the creation of two new
Microtor calibres, UG 71 and UG 72.

ans de recherche et de développement,
Universal Genève présente un mouvement Microtor – calibre UG 100 – d’une
conception résolument nouvelle. Ce
calibre-hommage à remontage automatique par micro-masse excentrée est
certifié COSC. Les composants étant
fabriqués selon des critères de qualité
très rigoureux, le mouvement a gagné en
précision. L’UG 100 est le plus petit
Microtor (11 1/2 ligne ou 25,60 mm) doté
de fonctions similaires qu’Universal
Genève ait jamais produit.
Baselworld 2006. After over two years of
research and development, Universal
Genève presented a Microtor movement
– Calibre UG 100 – featuring a resolutely
new conception. This “tribute” movement with automatic winding via an
off-centred micro-oscillating weight is
chronometer-certified by the COSC.
Since the parts are made according
to extremely rigorous quality criteria,
the movement has achieved considerably enhanced precision. The UG 100
is the smallest Microtor (11 1/2 lines
or 25,60 mm) endowed with similar
functions that Universal Genève has
ever produced.

Dérivée d’une petite seconde à 3h sur
les calibres précédents, la seconde est
ramenée au centre. De plus, un axe
spécifique permet d’atténuer les vibrations lors de l’avance de la grande
seconde, d’éviter l’utilisation de roues
intermédiaires et de réduire l’épaisseur
du mouvement. Le pont de balancier
est muni de deux vis pour un réglage fin
et d’un système d’absorption des chocs
empierré. Fonctionnant à la fréquence
de 28’800 alternences/heure, le mouvement dispose d’une réserve de marche
de 44 heures.
Derived from a small seconds display
at 3 o’clock on the previous movements,
the seconds are brought back to the centre. Moreover, a dedicated axis makes it
possible to diminish vibrations when the
large seconds hand is moving forward,
thereby avoiding the use of intermediate
wheels and reducing the thickness of
the movement. The balance-bridge is
equipped with two screws enabling

The heart of the Uni-Timer beats
to the rhythm of the self-winding
UG 71.5 chronograph movement.
It indicates 60 seconds in a counter
at 3 o’clock, 30 minutes in another
at 9 o’clock and the date in a
trapeze-shaped aperture between
4 and 5 o’clock. The unique
impression of depth created by the
highly structured dial called for no
less than 40 operations and four
different levels of colour. The
ruthenium-silvered dial features a
classic “Universal Genève blue”
minute-circle. The parfil chronograph hand is tipped with a hollowed triangle filled with white
Superluminova, itself extended by
a red-varnished decorative fillet.

The Timer Chronograph houses
the self-winding UG 71.6 chronograph movement, equipped with a
finely decorated rotor. It displays
60 seconds in a counter at
3 o’clock and 30 minutes in a
counter at 9 o’clock. A careful
observer will note that the 12-hour
counter at 6 o’clock is larger than
the two others in order to enhance
legibility. The case is slightly
(about one millimetre) more slender than previous chronograph
models. The sapphire crystal,
glareproofed on the inside, features an accentuated convex
