OLC MERCY MINISTRY GROUP In Support of Young Women Who Have Chosen Life You can become a part of this life-changing OLC Mercy Ministry by donating monthly Scrip gift cards purchased only for the following stores: Acme, Burlington Coat Factory, CVS, Kmart, ShopRite, Target, Walmart. SEPTA Token packs also can be donated. When you purchase the cards, inform the seller at the rectory that the gift cards are for the OLC Mercy Ministry Group, which will get them to the staff at the Blessed Margaret Home. If you need more info or would consider volunteering please contact Barbara Janiszewski 215-219-1430 or John Robbins 215-637-3876. Our Lady of Calvary will be hosting a clothing drive to benefit The Society of St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday, October 22nd from 9:00AM to 2:00PM. The Society will be using the services of GreenDrop to support their clothing drive. Look for the GreenDrop truck in the church parking lot where an attendant will be available to assist you with your donations. The following is a heartfelt “thank you” to Father Babowitch, Fr. Kirk, Fr. Kevin, and the entire OLC family from Melissa RizzoBilynsky, Executive Director of Blessed Margaret Castello Home for Crisis Pregnancies, for our continuing support of the women choosing life via donations of Gift Cards purchased through the OLC Scrip Program. The OLC outreach is led by our parish’s Mercy Ministry Group. Dear OLC Parishioners: I would like to express deep gratitude for the generosity shown by the OLC community in the month of September. Many of you responded to the request for gift cards and tokens for the Blessed Margaret of Castello from the Mercy Ministry. The staff, residents and other clients of the Home are truly humbled and touched by the great response. In just the first month 25 gift cards and a pack of tokens were donated through YOUR SCRIP program. We give the gift cards for participation in pregnancy, parenting and life skills classes. In the month of October we will be having classes on car seat safety, nutrition and financial literacy, which help our parents develop their skills, confidence and self sufficiency, which supports the healthy development of their newborn children. The Home enables women or couples experiencing a crisis pregnancy to CHOOSE LIFE by offering support. We will be able to provide gift cards for all five of our residents for five classes in October because of your support. Items that will be purchased include car seats, bouncy seats, diapers, wipes, formula. The use of gift cards empowers our clients and gives them an opportunity to use planning and budgeting skills. As a personal note my 3 year old daughter just started PreK at OLC and I am overjoyed to have her in a community of such generosity, service and love of neighbors. I am so excited for this wonder endeavor to grow as it supports the local community and parish school. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY – Following is the Prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy - Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. The man, Moses, is a great leader of his people. The woman, nameless, is a disenfranchised widow on the margins of society. Moses is standing on a mountaintop overlooking a great battle. The widow is boldly stomping into a law office every day waging a personal battle for justice. Both are pleading for something they desperately want from powers stronger than they are. Both are persistent. In fact, it is their persistence that stands out most. Moses prays for so long, he eventually has to sit down and solicit help from his friends. The widow pleads for so long, the judge finally gives her what she wants just to get rid of her. It would be easy to limit the lesson of these stories to this: if we are persistent in prayer, God will give us what we ask for. But experience tells us that prayer doesn’t always work that way. The duration of our pleading is no guarantee that we will get what we want. And that’s okay. In fact, it can be good. Why? Because there are other graces associated with persistence besides getting what we ask for. For one thing, persistence in prayer reminds us of our intrinsic incompleteness. It also keeps us in touch with our deepest needs and desires – like love, faith, justices, forgiveness, mercy. And persistence unites us with God. The responsorial psalm says, “Our help is from the Lord”. But God’s help sometimes comes in forms that surpass our pleadings. We plead for an end and receive the strength to endure. We beg for stability and receive the grace to change. We ask for more time and receive the gift of eternal life.
