Latin art has become a leading
voice to explore the richness of
the Latin spirit and culture. In
Latinas!, art created by women
and images of women heighten
awareness of the distinctive ethnic
and historic roles women have
played, particularly their
inextricable connection with
sustaining and nurturing life.
Artists represented include
Fernando Botero, Ana Maria
Martinez, Vik Muniz, Carlos Luna,
Adriana Varejao and much more.
Eye of the Beholder showcases six
of the most intriguing female artists
working today. Work by Nina
Chanel Abney, India Evans, Marilyn
Minter, Sara Rahbar, Christy
Singleton and Aya Uekawa will be
on view in a multimedia exhibition
that includes sculpture,
photography and works on paper
and canvas. What unites these
artists is their fresh, often
provocative, take on life. The
exhibition is curated for the
museum’s Contemporary Collectors
Circle by Elaine Berger.
The Subject is Women:
Impressionism and PostImpressionism offers a lavish
viewing of works by both genders
depicting women. This sumptuous
exhibition will demonstrate how
artists of these movements and
eras depict women. The works of
the show, many of them vibrant
oils, include renowned masters
such as Degas, Pissarro, Renoir
and many others.

A major exhibition that showcases
work by one of the most honored
Latin American artists working today,
Fernando Botero includes paintings,
drawings and monumental sculpture
that exemplify Botero’s most familiar
themes: commonplace scenes of
everyday life, life in the bedroom, life
of the streets and people rapt in
family activities or in the excitement
of music. Throughout, Botero’s
characters are seen in their “Boteroesque” girth and grandeur.

Advance Reservations are Required
Since space is limited, advance reservations are required for all NCMA
programs, events and trips. Reservations may be made up to three days
prior to an event online at nassaumuseum.org or by mailing a check to
Public Programs; Nassau County Museum of Art; One Museum Drive;
Roslyn Harbor, NY 11576. Call (516) 484-9338, ext. 12 for information.
A service fee is imposed for cancelled program reservations.
For the first time, works by Dubuffet,
Miró and Basquiat are shown
together, giving voice to the primal
symbols that characterize their works
in personalized types of graffiti that
exist in a timeless, unidentifiable
space. In the work of these artists,
signs and color erupt in a free
association of structure and rhythm;
the mysterious act of painting is
shown as wild and free, yet also very
exacting. The artists do not share
generation nor culture, but they do
share a confrontational antagonism
to the traditional and academic,
resulting in art that is raw, bold,
forthright and terribly exciting!
[
Fee For Online Reservations
There is a $2 handling fee for online
reservations. This charge is per
transaction, not per reservation.
All programs and events are subject
to change and cancellation based on
museum usage. Any fees paid for
cancelled programs will be refunded.

continued support of Nassau County, under County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi
and the Nassau County Legislature, the generosity of the museum’s board of
trustees, our members, the corporate membership program, museum sponsors
and foundation grants.
Nassau County Museum of Art is chartered and accredited under the laws of
New York State and the New York State Board of Regents as a not-for-profit
private educational institution and museum. It is operated by a privately elected
board of trustees that is responsible for its governance. The museum is funded
through income derived from admissions, parking, membership, special events
and private and corporate donations as well as federal and state grants.
Adult and young visitors alike are enchanted
by the whimsy and gentle satirical bite of
Tom Otterness’ Free Money. A gift from the
Contemporary Collectors Circle to the
museum’s permanent collection, this work is
one of the most popular in the Sculpture
Park. A group of school children are shown
gathered around Free Money; not seen in this
photo is a big bag of money, explaining the
joy of the dancing bronze couple.
Museum Members Mingle
with Artists and Art Collectors
Preview showings, where members meet and mingle with each other and with
collectors and artists, are among the most prized of member benefits. The opening for
Norman Rockwell: American Imagist had as special guests Judy Goffman Cutler, the
curator, and Laurence Cutler, the organizer of the exhibition. The Cutlers head the
American Illustrators Gallery and the National Museum of American Illustration.
To find out about the many benefits of museum membership, call (516) 484-9338,

Under The Big Top
January 10 through May 24
NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART / JANUARY 2010
With its color, daring and explosive fun,
the circus has always been a theme that
intrigues and inspires artists. In Under
the Big Top, NCMA’s MiniArtMuseum for
Children presents reproductions of
circus art by Seurat, Léger, Prendergast,
Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Chagall and
others, showcasing them alongside
displays that will guide the museum’s
young visitors through explorations of
circus skills, endangered animals and
memory games using circus characters
and activities. The Clown College station
includes wall panels that will assist
children to master the skills involved in
pantomime, juggling and creating a
clownish costume. Roomboxes will
include miniature circus animals; wall
titles assist visitors in identifying which
are endangered.

Majestic Painting of Matinecock
Indian Chief Joins NCMA Collection
NCMA is now home to an extraordinary and historically significant painting of a
Matinecock Indian chief that once hung in the Locust Valley branch of Bank of
America. The 1928 oil painting by George de Forest Brush commemorates the
importance of the Matinecocks to the history of our region.
The painting came into the museum’s collection through an unusual
public/private collaboration in which Locust Valley residents rallied to keep the
painting in the area when Bank of America was closing the local branch. They
contacted their legislators who launched discussions between bank officials and
the museum board that resulted in an agreement that keeps the painting in the
community. We thank Bank of America for its generosity in donating this work to
us and we also are grateful to former County Executive Tom Suozzi and Nassau
County Legislator Diane Yatauro for the critical roles they played in facilitating a
very happy outcome that benefits the whole region. Said Suozzi: “Generations
from now, Nassau residents will still be able to enjoy this magnificent work.”

EDUCATION
NCMA Recognized with
Major Federal and State Grants
Through a significant grant awarded to us by the Institute of Museum and Library
Services, NCMA will be participating in a new and innovative program that uses
the visual arts to build verbal and written skills for people whose first language is
not English. Our partner in the program is Queensborough Community College.
Acting Director Constance Schwartz said that the program “will create a dynamic
focus for immigrant families seeking to integrate into the mainstream of society.”
Two grants from the New York State Council on the Arts will help fund our work
with elementary schools in the Westbury and Glen Cove school districts. Here too,
we’ll be using visual arts activities to promote language skills for English language
learners. These activities are based on the successful PALS program which was
developed by our director of education, Patricia Lannes. We expect to be able to
assist several hundred first and second graders and their teachers.
We’ve just graduated a class of ten new
certified docents. They will join the valued
group of docents who lead public gallery tours,
facilitate conversations in the museum galleries
with school groups, engage families in the
process of looking at art and reach out to
community members in various venues..
We always
knew that the
museum’s
Education
Department
was absolutely
the tops in its
field. Now the
department
members’
peers have also

Visit Museum
Educators of all disciplines visited
the museum and its exhibitions as
part of last November’s Balanced
Mind Curriculum Conference. They
also were offered instructional
workshops led by members of our
Education Department.
Jonathan Seliger’s Contemporary Gallery
installation comes in for close scrutiny by
teachers participating in the Balanced Mind
conference.
Balanced Mind is an annual professional development day that draws hundreds
of Long Island teachers. The events of the conference are designed to acquaint
educators with strategies to employ performing and visual arts activities to boost
student performance.

Plan Your Children’s Special
Celebrations at the Museum
Our Twilight Pumpkin
Spectacular has become
Long Island’s biggest and
best annual Halloween
celebration. In 2009 we
hosted thousands of children and their
families. Groups including infants to
grandparents toured the lit pathways
with 3,000 illuminated pumpkins on
display. In the Spooky Circle, they
enjoyed Jonathan Kruk’s storytelling
and fabulous demonstrations with live
birds and snakes. None of this would
have been possible without the
incredible support of our lead sponsor,
Bethpage Federal Credit Union; our
sponsor, Bank of America; and our
supporter, Apple & Eve. Don’t miss out
on this spooky, but never too scary
holiday fun. Make sure you put the
2010 Pumpkin Spectacular in your
family calendar right now.
The MiniArtMuseum for Children provides the perfect setting for tea parties,
birthday parties and other elegant events for children. Contact
[email protected] to request a tour, or for further information.
