Ladies and Gentlemen,
Allow me to present the latest edition of the Polish Film Institute's New Polish Films catalogue —
a showcase of what is to come in Polish cinema. In this catalogue, we present a selection of feature
films, some of which are sure to screen in competition and in other notable sections at international
film festivals.
2015 was an exceptionally successful year for Polish cinema. Paweł Pawlikowski's Ida received an Oscar,
while several other Polish filmmakers were nominated for this prestigious award. The Berlin International
Film Festival brought the Silver Bear award for Małgorzata Szumowska's Body/Ciało and an award
for The Performer by Maciej Sobieszczański and Łukasz Ronduda.
Today, I would like you to join me in opening a new chapter in the history of Polish cinema. The year 2016
begins with Polish films in official selection at Sundance and Berlinale. The year will also bring a number
of great surprises and fascinating discoveries in Polish cinemas. Polish filmmakers are always working
on new projects, many of which are made thanks to the endless efforts of the Polish Film Institute
to make Polish cinema versatile and memorable for audiences in Poland and abroad.
I'm sure the New Polish Films catalogue will assist you in discovering something intriguing, surprising,
and inspiring about Polish cinema. I encourage you to experience Polish cinema in all its diversity
throughout the year.

Kornel and Maks are spending their holidays in front of a computer monitor, with absolutely no intention of returning to the boring
real world. This changes when their uncle Dionizy, the black sheep of the family, comes to visit. The unpredictable Dionizy takes his
nephews into a world full of unexpected events and extraordinary individuals. They will lead the Adventurers’ Club on a journey
aimed at finding the treasure once buried by their great-grandfather Kornel. Things get complicated when a pair of criminals, Doctor
Kadryll and his sidekick, get wind of the treasure. A race against time ensues, filled with comic errors and surprising plot twists.

2002: Bark!
Based on a true story that created a media frenzy in Poland and abroad, turning into one of the world’s most famous trials, written
up by newspapers around the world, including The Guardian, The New Yorker, Time, and Daily Mail. The person of interest was
Krystian Bala, author of a book describing the perfect crime he had allegedly committed. The story was built like a masterful
psychological thriller, with multiple interwoven plots that played on the themes of love, betrayal, and uninhibited ambition. From
the beginning, we find ourselves asking the question of whether or not the author of the book is a killer, or a victim of his own
ambition and an unfortunate coincidence.

The film is based on a book by legendary Polish war reporter Ryszard Kapuściński. It is the story of a reporter, searching for the truth of
war. During his perilous journey across Angola, he is faced with events that force him to reevaluate his approach to his work, and to life in
general. It is the dramatic account of the three months Kapuściński spent in Angola in 1975, in the early days of its decades-long civil war.
The film’s narrative animation helps visualise past events and the surrealistic visions of war. The documentary scenes focus on aspects
that appear to differ from the animated plot, but ultimately share a common denominator and complement the story in a suggestive
and emotional way.

Ten-year-old Janis is a pioneer, living on a collective farm (kolkhoz) called ‘Dawn’ in what is now Latvia. His father, an opponent of
the kolkhoz system (and Soviet rule in general), plans to burn down the kolkhoz head office. Little Janis betrays his father by turning
him in to the police. The father kills Janis in revenge. Who is good and who is evil in this Soviet parable?
The film is based on a Soviet propaganda story; young pioneer Pavlik Morozov denounced his father to the secret police and was
later murdered by his family in revenge. Morozov’s life was supposed to serve as an inspiration for all the ‘righteous’ citizens of
the Soviet Union.

The story of Hafeez and Praveen, two accidental religious extremists who travel from India to Krakow with a suicide mission.
Their plans become complicated when the Polish police, hungry for publicity, get wind of the planned attacks and begin following
the terrorists-to-be. Beautiful pub-owner Rosie and crafty Tamim trying to make an easy buck — these are but a few of the array
of colourful characters who cross paths with the Indian terrorists, making the adventures of Hafeez and Praveen ever more exciting.
A film with a peaceful message; a light-hearted look at intolerance and lack of understanding for our fellow human beings.

Poland’s first film about refugees. Beginning in 1994, in the days immediately preceding the beginning of genocide, and ending
in 1997, the film tells the story of a Polish ornithologist researching the decline in the population of vultures in Rwanda. When
the genocide begins, she – somewhat accidentally – saves the life of a young Rwandan girl, the daughter of her Tutsi co-worker.
She brings her to Poland. But after arriving in Poland, the two women are distraught and incapable of leading a normal routine life.
They try desperately to get past their horrific experience. A story about friendship, forgiveness, and the power of nature.

A little known episode from the life of Stalinist security police office Julia Brystiger. Her nickname Bloody Luna was a reference
to her incredibly brutal methods of interrogation. In the early 1960s, she appears in a centre for the blind on the outskirts of
Warsaw, a place often visited by Cardinal Wyszyński, whose imprisonment in 1953-1956 Brystiger supervised personally. During
a difficult and heated discussion with the cardinal, Brystiger denounces the communist ideology and begs for forgiveness for
her crimes and for guidance in her search for God.

The story of Prussia’s von Krauss family and the love affair between a young Kashubian man named Mateusz and a German aristocrat
named Marta. The complicated fate of three nations in the old Polish-German region of Kashubia, where the artificial line of the border
drawn at Versailles after the First World War divided not only the land, but also the people: Germans, Kashubians, Poles. The film
spans four decades, depicting the complicated choices forced upon the people who lived here. Prussia’s anti-Polish sentiments were
set against Kashubian patriotism, which led to the 1939 mass murder of thousands of Kashubians and Germans in the forests of
Piaśnica. The historical background is brought together by an emotional bond that manages to thrive in the face of adversity.

a happy life – she has to pretend to be someone she’s not. One day Zośka is forced to face the harsh reality. Betrayed, she loses her job,

There is a place in Mexico where people have discovered that disappearing is not that bad after all. You only truly die when no one
remembers you. Can we connect the life and afterlife through dreams and memories? Seven characters wander between dream and
memory, searching for the ones they lost. Interwoven destinies bring us an intimate and moving answer to this question by fulfilling
their innermost dreams and connecting with the ones they love. What happens to the ones we love after their death? Can we bring
them back? Can we keep them alive through our memories? Or perhaps by placing them in an imaginary afterlife world? In its
various imaginative forms and visions around the world, Journals explores the question of existence and the afterlife. It is about
the parallel life – a life we can dream of, but cannot touch.

Spanning a period of 28 years, the film tells the story of the Beksiński family. The main protagonists are: Zdzisław, head of
the family and acclaimed painter; Tomek, Zdzisław’s son, prominent music journalist and film translator, and Zofia – extraordinary
woman, wife, and mother. The story begins in 1977 when Tomek moves out of the family house. His hypersensitive and unnerving
personality gives his mother constant cause for concern. Meanwhile Zdzisław tries to dedicate himself to his art. After Tomek’s
suicide attempt, his parents need to try fighting not only for his son, but also for regaining control of their lives. When Zdzisław signs
a contract with France-based art dealer Piotr Dmochowski and Tomek starts working for the Polish Radio, it seems that the worst of
family troubles are behind them. But a strange series of ill-fated events is yet to come.

works. Loving Vincent is the world’s first feature painted animation. It is the story of the life and controversy surrounding the death
of Vincent van Gogh, told by the characters in his portraits. A devised plot allows for the mystery surrounding the death of this artist,
so under-appreciated in his time, to be solved. Was it really suicide?

with neon lights and sequins. But these are no ordinary girls; they are mermaids, trying to understand what it means to be a woman
in the world they live in. They join a band called Figs & Dates, becoming an instant sensation of the city’s nightlife. In the throes of
love and budding passions, they briefly forget their true nature. But all it takes is one broken heart for the situation to spin out of
control.

The story of an extraordinary woman, forced to leave her homeland and move to France to begin the scientific career that would bring
her global acclaim. In all written texts on Marie Skłodowska-Curie , she would be presented only in terms of her genius. Until recently,
the tragic death of Marie’s husband and her subsequent affair with Paul Langevin were never addressed in public. When Marie’s affair
with her married colleague comes to light following an intrigue by Paul’s betrayed wife, the tabloids launch a ruthless smear
campaign, protesting against Skłodowska-Curie being awarded the second Nobel prize. Skłodowska-Curie, whose humble and
noble life had always been dedicated to her work, is suddenly accused of wrecking a model French family and bringing disgrace to
the name of her beloved husband.

Summer. Late 1970s. Twelve-year-old Piotrek lives in a small provincial town. At the beginning, we follow the first days of the summer
vacation he is spending with his mother, and observe the very strong bond between them. When his mother is at work, Piotrek likes
to go to the local lake in search of company. It is there that he meets the charismatic Skowron and his gang; together, they engage in
crazy, careless fun at the lake. At the same time, Piotrek’s mother starts going out almost every night, claiming to be meeting with
a female friend. Seeing his mother’s changing behaviour, the boy becomes increasingly worried.

A day in the life of three Seamstresses in a sewing room located in the basement of an old tenement house – a story that is at times
tragic, grotesque, and filled with black humour. Inside the sewing room, they are accompanied by Krojczy, a philosophy major, and
Maria Miracle, a mysterious stranger who decides to descend to the low classes and help those who are at the bottom of the social
ladder. A stain on the mouldy wall, which grows throughout the day and begins to take on on unnerving shapes, helps find
the solution to the Seamstresses’ dark secrets. Other tragic secrets are to be found in the garbage dump and under the floorboards
of the sewing room, where human moans and cries can be heard over the hum of the sewing machines.

A portrait of teenagers in the modern world. The script was inspired by real events that took place over a decade ago. The film is set
in an average small town in present-day Poland. It is a day in the life of three 13-year-olds who are getting ready to celebrate the end
of the school year. At first, the film shows each of the three characters in their home environment, carefully following their everyday
routine. What begins as an innocent story leads to an unexpected and terrifying ending. Playground is a reserved contemplation of
evil in today’s world.

A 40-year old actress (single and strong, yet lonely), her sister (an emotionally unstable schoolteacher whose married-with-kids life
appears more orderly) and their domineering father, who gradually loses control over his family due to his wife’s sudden illness and
his own health troubles; these are the three individuals at the heart of These Daughters of Mine, a touching story about the strength
of family ties in a situation of imminent danger. A tongue-in-cheek story about life-and-death questions.

The end of the analogue age. Leonard, an introvert technician, is asked to dismantle the local phone booths. He and his wild driver
Ben set off on a journey to the end of an era. A film about the inability to communicate between loved ones, about the pain that
accompanies this inability, and the troubles that go with reaching out to another human being. It is also the story of an attempt to
build relationships; without relationships, life is empty and barren — not unlike the land where Leonard and Ben live.

Set in Poland’s mountain region of Podhale in the early 20th century. The quaint life of a small village is disturbed when torrential
rains destroy the crops and hunger begins to loom over the villagers. The hardened mountain people claim that it is the wrath of
God. Redemption will surely come after a statue of St. Anthony is erected. Marcin Mudroń volunteers to sculpt the statue. This is
the opportunity for a better life for this single father raising his children in poverty. But his noble gesture, rather than being
welcomed by the mountaineers, results in opening old wounds. The demons of the past return to disturb the quiet life of the village.

An investigator sent to work in a police archive re-opens an unsolved murder case from years before. At the age of 50, he tries to redefine
himself and prove his worth in a new reality where morality from the past no longer matters. Demoted from his police investigator
position, he begins investigating a case that could discredit the current chief of police. What makes Jacek believe he is able to take
on the entire judiciary system? Frustrated with his work and his personal life, all he can do is prove that he deserves a place in this
new, advanced society. A society that generously offers everything to everyone, claiming that if anyone fails in life, they have only
themselves to blame.

An epic period piece. Set over the course of six years, the story mostly takes place during World War Two in a small village in
the eponymous region of Volhynia – a village inhabited by Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews. The life of this small community is then torn
apart by history. In the spring of 1943, a wave of ethnic cleansing sweeps over the region. In a sea of brutality and hate, the film’s
protagonist Zosia Głowacka tries to save the lives of her children and her own.

A simple story about reconciliation. A breakthrough at the age of nine or ten. The young human being crosses a threshold, finally
realizing that the world is more complicated than it seemed before, and that simple divisions don’t always reflect the complex
emotions that are starting to appear. How do we deal with them? How do we assimilate them? How do we process them?
What is better, which attitudes are best suited for life? Is it those that focus on deluding ourselves, on immersing ourselves in our
own imagined world? Or is it those that are more realistic, more brutal, but at the same time allow us to have a more solid footing?
Is it even worth it? And can this be determined at all at the age of ten?
