MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT
The Christmas season closes this Sunday
with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a
sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany.
Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a
manifestation of the Spirit of God in
Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his
baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the
scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104
highlights the Spirit of God creating and
renewing the earth, while the reading from
Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In
Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord
the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And
the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy
Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also,
through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6).

TEMPER AND PRIDE
Temper is what gets most of us into trouble.
Pride is what keeps us there. -Anonymous
Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting
with some folks today. They may wonder if you
have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended
Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a
previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is
solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in
some strands of the Christian tradition it
represents the clearest manifestation of the
mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day,
for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue
of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of
Christ shining through our humanity precisely
in his baptism.
At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated
first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than
most other ancient people, the Egyptians
understood the life-giving properties of water.
On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so
central in the history of their people, and
reserved it in honor. Many other places copied
the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of
people in Antioch gathering at midnight to
collect flowing water into vessels they brought
from home since “today there is a blessing on the
water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the
table with beautiful bowls of water and white
candles, toast one another with goblets of
sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in
the window one last time.

Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also
the Lectionary's Year of Luke, for Luke's
Gospel highlights God's mercy in finding
the lost, healing the sick, restoring the
broken, comforting the sorrowful,
forgiving the sinner through Jesus'
ministry. But before doing, Luke's Jesus is
always praying. As practical moderns
programmed to measure worth by
productivity, we instinctively appreciate
the Jubilee's call to embrace the practical
challenges of our baptism. But today Luke
focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but
on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we
pray to become the disciples we are called
to be, that the Spirit empower us to do
what disciples are called to do. Imitating
Jesus' openness to the Spirit will enable us
to cooperate with the grace that transforms
us into "beloved sons [and daughters] . . .
in whom the Father is
well pleased," living out,
in this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, the extraordinary
potential of our baptism.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
An epiphany is a manifestation of God in visible form.
Today’s scriptures are replete with references to ways that God
was made manifest. Isaiah sees “the glory of the Lord . . .
revealed” in the visible form of God renewing the covenant by
bringing the Israelites home from exile (Isaiah 40:5).
Psalm 104 presents God’s “manifold works,” singing: “When
you send forth your spirit . . . you renew the face of the
earth” (Psalm 104:30). The reading from Titus takes up
this theme of renewal as a manifestation of God. It mentions
three “appearances” of God—in the person of Jesus, in glory in
the fullness of time, and in our baptismal “renewal by the
Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). Finally, God was made manifest
in Jesus’ baptism when “the Holy Spirit descended upon him
in bodily form like a dove . . . [a]nd a voice came from
heaven” (Luke 3:22).
BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE
Did the first reading from Isaiah sound familiar? It was also
heard on the First Sunday of Advent in December of 2008. I
suppose it could be a reminder that John the Baptist appears at
the beginning of the Advent/Christmas season and at the end. In
Advent we were preparing for Jesus’ coming at Christmas. Now
we are preparing for his coming at any time.
The reading from Isaiah talks about the Lord coming in mercy to
the people whose “guilt is expiated” (Isaiah 40:2). The
mountains and hills will be leveled, symbolic of making an easy
way to the Lord. In other words, the Lord is approachable. With
our sins forgiven we need not fear asking God for help: “Fear
not to cry out” (Isaiah 40:9). The Lord comes in power, not to
strike sinners down but to shepherd them and lead them.
In the second reading, St. Paul has a similar theme. Jesus gave
his life for us on the cross so that we could be free from sin and
able to reject evil desires. We are free to give ourselves in love as
he did. And he does this, not because we did anything to
deserve it, but from his own love and mercy for us. Think about
that. No matter how bad I was in the past, the Lord loves me
enough to forgive it all, and even better, to give the Spirit to
help me stay close to God.
How do we prepare for this? We can start by hearing the words
of the readings today, letting them sink into our hearts and
minds. Read them again at home, and remind yourself that you
have been forgiven, that you can live as a person “eager to do
what is good” (Titus 2:14). Ask the Spirit to help you see what
things are keeping you from being like Jesus and to give you the
strength to say no. And look for ways you can be more loving
with your family, then with your friends, and eventually with
anyone who needs your help.
When we let that Spirit guide
us, we become like Jesus in
that we can listen for God to
say, “You are my beloved
child; with you I am well
pleased” (see Luke 3:22).

Understanding Family Systems and Their Influence on Ministry: April 23, 9:00am - 4:00pm
We bring our families with us everywhere we go and so does everyone we interact with in
ministry! Grow in your awareness of your own family system and those of the people to whom
you minister. Sr. Ann Perrin, cnd, lmft, adjunct professor in the Graduate Counseling
Department at University of Scranton, will provide a practical and informative look at family
systems, their developmental cycles and relational dynamics. This day will include lecture, selfreflection, practical application and small group sharing.

Diocesan Pastoral Center, 330 Wyoming Ave, Scranton
Lisa Rigau, RN, MS, sports and wellness nutritionist, will share the importance of self-care for
good ministry. She offers training in the practice of loving kindness and self-compassion through
contemplative prayer, mindfulness, mindful eating and conversation. This workshop will involve
teaching, discussion and trying out what you learn. Participants are asked to wear comfortable
clothing.

LENTEN PREPARATION SESSION
The Office for Parish Life will be holding a regional Lenten
Preparation Session on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at St. Vincent
de Paul, 101 St. Vincent Dr., Milford at 6:30PM for all those
involved with the preparation of liturgical seasons, especially
music ministers, liturgy committees, art and environment
committees, or anyone wanting to deepen his or her
appreciation of the Lenten season and the Paschal Triduum.
In an effort to help these liturgical leaders network with
neighboring parishes, the Lenten Preparation Sessions will
include faith sharing on the scripture readings for the season, a
brief overview of some of the traditional practices of Lent, a
discussion of different themes and music selections that parishes
are using, and sharing ideas for the liturgical environment.

The Diocese of Scranton will again participate in the worldwide
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which is celebrated each year
in January.
The Diocese of Scranton will host an Ecumenical Celebration of
God's Word on Monday, January 25, 2016, at 12:10 p.m. in the
Cathedral of Saint Peter, Scranton. There will be no 12:10
p.m. Mass that day in the Cathedral. All are welcome to
attend. In addition, CTV: Catholic Television will broadcast the
service live.
The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of
Scranton, will preside, and Bishop Jeremiah Park of the
Susquehanna Conference, Methodist Church will deliver the
homily.
Clergy and representatives from various Christian traditions and
ecumenical agencies will be present. Liturgical music will be
