Tall Pines is Officially Accredited In past newsletters we’ve shared with you our journey toward the accreditation process. We are excited to inform you that Tall Pines Conservancy has officially achieved accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Commission! Many, many thanks to the TPC board, advisory board (past and present) and all those who contributed to the achievement of this milestone. The Accreditation Seal is a trademark owned by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission and is used under license. Having Fun While Raising Awareness for Land Conservancy On April 22nd, friends of Tall Pines Conservancy celebrated Earth Day at Sweet Mullets Brewing Company during our 2nd Annual Beer Tasting Event. In addition to enjoying locally brewed beer, attendees of this sold-out event had the opportunity to sample wines courtesy of Sonoma Cellars of Oconomowoc and gluten-free sparkling cider from Island Orchard Cider of Door County, Wisconsin. A delicious buffet, comprised of locally-sourced food with a secret key ingredient BEER– was enjoyed by all. Attendees saluted Tall Pines’ recent National Land Trust Accreditation, and brief remarks highlighted the role Tall Pines Conservancy and its area partners play in preserving our local land and water resources. Many thanks to our host – Sweet Mullets Brewing Company – and our sponsors, which include Badgerland Financial, the Kathy and Bruce Rosenheimer Family and Koepke Farms LaBelle Cheese. SnowSki at Camp/Quad Ag Resource Day More than 50 local landowners attended Ag Resource Day at the Ashippun Town Hall on Wednesday, March 11th. The Wisconsin Farm Center shared important considerations when planning a farm business succession or transition. The City of Oconomowoc discussed information about new efforts to partner with farmers in the Oconomowoc River Watershed to improve water quality. In addition, representatives from Dodge County, Waukesha County, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Tall Pines Conservancy, City of Oconomowoc, Clean Waters Alliance and Rock River Coalition were on hand to share information and answer questions. If you would like information regarding these important topics, please contact Tall Pines Conservancy at 262-369-0500 to obtain additional resources. Talk about luck! The frigid artic weather took a break for one day and provided the ideal snow and weather conditions for another successful SnowSki event at Camp/Quad on Saturday, February 21st. A great time was had by all 50 + energetic Wisconsinites who explored the land on their own via snow shoeing, cross-country skiing or hiking. Afterward, lively conversations were conducted in the Warming House over sizzling hot chili and other refreshments created by our Chef Earl Gesling, specializing in locallysourced food creations. Many thanks to Quad/Graphics for their continued support of Tall Pines Conservancy. Special thanks to our hosts and sponsors: Oconomowoc/Ashippun Agricultural Enterprise Area, Badgerland Financial, Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C, and Digested Organics. The application was accepted and we closed on the Oconomowoc farm in October of 2014. In addition, we anticipate closing on a 300 acre farm along the Rock River in Ashippun with FRPP funding in the third quarter of 2015. Our work continues on the Mason Creek Watershed Management Plan together with the North Lake Management District, SEWRPC, WDNR, Trout Unlimited, the Town of Merton and Carroll couraging landowners to sign farmland preservation agreements; furthering the creation of a Purchase of Development Rights program; and encouraging the Town of Ashippun to adopt farmland preservation zoning. TPC partnered with many outstanding non-profit organizations and governmental partners in 2014 to work together to meet mutual goals in land preservation activities including the Mid-Kettle Partners, Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, the Rock River Coalition, Town and Country Resource Conservation & Development, Greener Oconomowoc, The Nature Conservancy, the Waukesha County Land Conservancy, Pro-Health Uses of Funds Sources of Funds Increase in Net Assets 36% Contributions 84% Sources of Funds Contributions 84% Special Events 14% Investment Income 2% Total Program Services 30% Special Events 14% Management 16% Investment Income 2% Fund Raising 11% Amount $320,272.00 53,030.00 8,063.00 $381,365.00 University. In 2014, we embarked on an ambitious project with the City of Oconomowoc called “adaptive management.” Within this project, we partnered with the City to apply for the National Regional Conservation Partnership Program grant. This grant would allow us to work with national programs to assist landowners within the watershed in implementing sustainable land management practices in order to reduce phosphorus levels in our rivers, lakes and streams. We continue to work diligently with both the Town of Oconomowoc and Ashippun on the Agricultural Enterprise Area; en- Special Events 7% Uses of Funds Amount Increase in Net Assets 36% Program Services 30% Management 16% Fund Raising 11% Special Events 7% Total $136,746.00 115,615.00 59,698.00 42,699.00 26,607.00 $381,365.00 Westwood, Benjamin Goss Birding Club and Carroll University. With the help of a grant from the Kettle Moraine Garden Club, we have partnered with the Town of Merton to plant a butterfly garden at the Oconomowoc River Conservancy. Land Management We continued to work on adopting policies to meet best practices standards of the Land Trust Alliance and in preparation for accreditation. Our outreach strategies included working with landowners in the Towns of Oconomowoc, Ashippun, Merton and Delafield. We continued our monitoring program with newly trained PAGE 4 volunteers, and conducted an invasive species removal work day. We received a generous grant from the Clean Water Festival to work on shoreline restoration at North Lake that we’ll kick off in 2015. Public Awareness and Fundraising The Sixth Annual TPC “Ride to the Barns,” a cycling event that highlighted local farms and local food, was very well received and attracted over 425 cyclists. In June, we also conducted a meditation hike at Camp/Quad for our members. We also presented our first “SnowSki” event in February at Camp/Quad, which was attended by more 50 attendees, as well as our first Earth Day “Beer Tasting” of Tall Pines Heritage Beer. The event, held at our local brew pub Sweet Mullets, attracted more than 60 guests. Our annual meeting was held at Monches Farms in July with more than 60 people in attendance. With the assistance of an LTA leadership grant, our website was entirely rebranded, we created a quarterly e-bulletin and a new newsletter format. Our Carroll University intern created videos that we posted to our website on each of our projects. (continued on PAGE 5) 2014 Goals & Accomplishments... (from PAGE 4) We continue to sponsor the Chamber’s Winter Market in Oconomowoc, that attracts over 400 patrons per market in the winter months, where we were featured one month with a presentation. And we hosted tables of TPC information at the Clean Water Festival event, the Green Team’s market in Wales, and adopted a night at Summerstage, Lapham Peak. We conducted presentations at Kirkland Crossing, Three Pillars, and to the Oconomowoc Kiwanis Club. In 2014, Tall Pines continued to work on the Land Conservation Partnership Fund, with the goal of raising $1.5 million to fund future preservation projects. And we kicked off our fundraising plan for “The Charlie Brumder Preservation Fund” with a goal of $200,000 to be raised for Stewardship. Our current membership stands at approximately 500. Our board has participated in a number of fundraising trainings. Organization Tall Pines was awarded assistance with an organizational assessment by the LEAP program run by the Land Trust Alliance and Gathering Waters. This assessment was completed in 2012 and is a pre-cursor to applying for accreditation. Tall Pines worked on the implementation of the recommendations of the organizational assessment throughout 2013 and then applied for accreditation in April of 2014. The staff and accreditation committee worked diligently to answer and defend our application to the commission throughout 2014–with accreditation achieved in early 2015. With the assistance of an LTA leadership grant, we hired a strategic plan consultant and began working on a new strategic plan for 2015-2018. Our Executive Director was named to the Board of Gathering Waters, Wisconsin’s land trust association. And recently, she became Chair of the Land Trust Council of Gathering Waters. PAGE 6 Oconomowoc Watershed Protection... (from PAGE 1) Role As an in-kind partner, TPC will be working with willing landowners to place Conservation Easements on their properties. These easements offer not only land protection in-perpetuity but also require the implementation of best management practices. Boy Scouts Get Hands-On Ecology Lesson from TPC On Saturday, April 18th, our Tall Pines Conservancy staff spent the day offering educational tours to 230 Boy Scouts who set up camp for 3 days at Camp/Quad in Washington County. It was a day of mentoring with Eagle Scouts, while teaching the younger scouts necessary life skills. The theme was “Leave No Trace.” Tall Pines Conservancy contributed by highlighting the many plant communities The most popular activity proved to be the station where the scouts could scoop up water critters and identify them with provided nature guides. Many different species were identified including numerous varieties of snails. A few of the scouts lined up three snails for a small race to the water. That is the beauty of Nature... it triggers our imaginations! Much fun was had by all. Funding The City of Oconomowoc has received a grant from the Regional Conservation Partnership Program and funds will be dispersed to landowners through the existing NRCS programs as well as through newly developed programs. Over 30 Partners The application included TPC as their major partner, as well as 30+ other stakeholders and partners including lake management groups, governmental bodies, private landowners, land conservation districts, producers and crop consultants, environmental groups and universities. on the property. Ecology principles were discussed, such as the need to protect critical wetlands and associated uplands for amphibians to be able to complete their full life cycle. The boys were able to see the remnant site where the rare Blandings Turtle may reside. The scouts also toured the large interior forest, which provides safe nesting for rare birds such as Scarlet Tanagers and Cerulean Warblers. Board Transitions TPC wishes to give a great big thank you to Ray Peebles for his dedication, support and numerous hours of labor at our events during his tenure as our President. Under his leadership, we acquired new conservation easements on farms in the Town of Ocononowoc, and achieved the monumental task of national accreditation. We are fortunate that he will continue to share his time and expertise through continued service as a board member. Kevin Flanagan has assumed the role of Board President, with Don Gallo as Vice President. Nancy Bonniwell has joined the Executive Committee as Secretary. New Advisory Board Members are Katie Brumder, Laura Gralton, Ted Rolfs and Bruce Rosenheimer. Thank you for your commitment to Tall Pines Conservancy!
