TRUST AND HONESTY
ANDRIES VAN HEERDEN - CEO
Every edition of the “Afrimatters” carries a message from the
CEO. I have always attempted to keep the messages positive
and motivational whilst highlighting important aspects of the
group’s strategy. One aspect that is close to my heart is the
group’s values and the way it manifests in our everyday lives.
My message in the second edition of Afrimatters in 2013 was
devoted to our values, what they mean and why it is so crucial.
Unfortunately not everyone in the group is equally committed
to our values and living a life of integrity. We have witnessed
an alarming increase in the occurrence of theft and fraud.
The really upsetting part is that in many of the cases our
own staff members are involved. Cases vary from relatively
small amounts of diesel being stolen to very serious cases of
fraud and corruption. I am saddened by the fact that people
who we trust, who we saw as our colleagues and friends
turn out to be dishonest, choosing to enrich themselves at
our expense.
My dream for Afrimat is that it will be the greatest company
to work for in South Africa for all our personnel. This can
only be possible if we all accept the responsibility to look
after the interest of Afrimat, live our values and to abide by
the rules. We need to adhere to the group’s Code of Conduct
and as a group we will have no tolerance with offenders.
My request is that each of us familiarise ourselves with the
Code of Conduct. Please report any theft, fraud or corruption
that you become aware of on the Whistle-Blowing Hotline
(contact details overleaf) and help us to remove this cancer
from our great company.
Staff can access the Whistle-Blowing Policy and the Code of
Conduct from our website under the “Internal Policies” tab.

READYMIX CAPE TOWN
With the first quarter of 2014 already behind us, all indications are
that Readymix is in for a busy year!
There has been a general upswing in the Cape Town market and demand for concrete
has been high.
All our resources (both people and trucks) are being stretched and it has been a challenging
time for the division.
Whilst trying to supply every available cubic metre of concrete from our various plants,
the focus has been on the mobile divisions with both the Gouda and Vredenburg plants
running at full capacity supplying the wind turbine concrete bases which are being built at
these two wind farms.
A new plant will shortly be erected at Stellenbosch with the Group 5 Value Logistics
Centre in Joostenbergvlakte being the first big project planned from this site.
I am confident that my team will rise to the challenges ahead and that we will see the
higher volumes continue for the remainder of 2014.

GESKIEDENIS VAN
LANCASTER PRECAST
Richardsbaai.
‘n Kollega was Oliver Rissik. Oliver was bevriend
nommer NV11192. Die voertuig is intussen
gerestoureer en het ‘n ereplek by Afrimat
Concrete Products se kantore in Vryheid.
P. Lourens en P. De Wet het die Dyno as
kantoor, vervoermiddel en karweimiddel
gebruik.
P. Lourens hulle op ‘n hoenderplaas by
Camper Down gaan koop het.
Lancaster Kwarries)
SA BLOCK
Compiled by Davin Giles
In January, with a heavy heart, I boarded a plane for Johannesburg to commence work
at SA Block and Clinker supplies. I was leaving behind my own family and my Western
Cape family.
The silver lining was that, in time, I would be re-united with my family and a new adventure
lay ahead for us all. Furthermore I knew my Western Cape family was in good hands.
The first few days felt strange, and I put all my trust in my new best friend, Mr Garmin
GPS. Without him I would have been truly lost.
Following the warm welcome, I am getting to know my “new” family, and realise that
they are “Afrimat” people. This has made the transition so much easier and the support
offered with my new position, overwhelming.
Once settled, I will spend some more time on the sites getting to know our employees
on the frontline and look forward to discussing our future goals and providing further
information on Afrimat as a whole.
One can now understand the financial success of this business as all work together as a
dynamic team where the work ethic is something to experience. The “German Efficiency”
is clear with control systems in place that most accountants only dream of.
5.
The foundation of the business must be around the Clinker, managed by Ruan Smit.
This amazing and interesting product has properties very different from any aggregate
that I have worked with, and I believe that the full potential of this material is still to
be discovered.
The SA Block operation managed by Albert da Serra, is mind blowing to say the least.
To witness the production and sales (thanks Paul) of in excess of a million units daily
is a sight to behold.
SA Block and Clinker Supplies are an integral part of the Afrimat Group, contributing
a large portion of the annual profits. We see this growing in the future where it will
cement its position as the dominant contributor of profit in the group. If you have any
doubts, just ask Willem Hatting.
We look forward to the new financial year, somehow I think it may just be the best ever.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Saamgestel deur Marnus Dreyer
Jim Collins sê in sy boek “From Good to Great”, met verwysing na maatskappye wat van

AFRIMAT LEARNERSHIP
PROGRAMME
Compiled by Anthea Adams
When the Afrimat Learnership Programme was initiated, a vision for this programme
was set: “to create and nurture a highly skilled workforce through specific in-house
and external training”.
The goal was then to achieve this vision by recruiting the most suitable candidates,
to train them and place them in the appropriate workplace according to their respective
trades and talents. This programme takes place over a minimum period of 3 years.
Over the years the recruitment procedure for the Afrimat Learnership Programme has been
a huge success. Placements of Learnerships within Afrimat has been done nationwide.

THE DEADLY SINS OF
THE TONGUE
“DEATH AND LIFE ARE IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE,
AND THOSE WHO LOVE IT WILL EAT ITS FRUIT.” (Prov. 18:21).
This article was adapted from a chapter in Robert Morris’ book The Power of Your Words.
There are so many challenging nuggets of wisdom in Proverbs relating to our speech, so
let’s look at a few of them.
DEADLY SIN # 1: Lying - Telling the Untruth:
In the list of the seven things the Lord hates, the second one is a lying tongue (Prov.
6:16-19). Even though this is one of the most common, widespread sins that people
commit, that doesn’t mean God approves of it. Proverbs 12:22 tells us that “lying lips
are an abomination to the Lord.” God hates lying!
DEADLY SIN # 2: Strife - Stirring Up Division:
Another item on the list of the seven things the Lord hates is one who sows discord
among brethren, or stirs up strife. Proverbs 6:15 warns us that these people will be
destroyed suddenly, broken beyond all hope of healing.
DEADLY SIN # 3: Gossip - Dishing the Dirt:
A gossip is a person who habitually spreads intimate or private rumours or facts. The
Bible warns us about such people: “A gossip tells secrets, so don’t hang around with
someone who talks too much.” (Prov. 20:19). Don’t gossip!
DEADLY SIN # 4: Slander - Passing Along False Information:
Slander is worse than gossip because it is a false, malicious statement about someone.
Proverbs 10:18b says, “whoever spreads slander is a fool.” The Bible warns us not to
keep company with a slanderer (1 Cor. 5:11).
22.
DEADLY SIN # 5: Tale-bearing - Breaking Confidences:
“A tale-bearer reveals secrets, But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.”
(Prov. 11:13). In the church, people should feel safe to confess their sins to one another
and know that what they share will be kept in confidence.
DEADLY SIN # 6: Contentious Speech - Habitually Speaking Strife:
Someone who is contentious is argumentative, combative or quarrelsome. “It is better
to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a contentious wife in a lovely home.”
(Prov. 21:9). God doesn’t want us to be argumentative.
These are only a few of the ways that we can speak death into other people’s lives.
But don’t forget that we also have the power in our tongue to speak life, encouragement, affirmation and blessing into people’s lives, too!

FLAKINESS INDEX. (FI)
Test method B3T in the TMH1 : (Standard methods of testing road construction materials)
DEFINITION
The Flakiness Index of a coarse aggregate is the mass of particles in that aggregate,
expressed as a percentage of the total mass of that aggregate, which will pass the slot or
slots of specified width for the appropriate size fraction. The width of the slot are those
of the sieve opening through which each of the fractions passes. (See table).

Vredenburg and our new quarry Kliprug in Cape Town. We also have between 5 - 30 sub contractor’s trucks also running from us at any given time.

HOUSE OF HOPE
Compiled by Dawie Schroeder
It is with great pride that I give feedback on the “House of Hope” community project run
by Afrimat Worcester. I want to first start off by thanking the two main drivers of this
project - Davin Giles an Frans Conradie. “House of Hope” is a place of safety for victims
of abuse against women and children. It is a big farm house on a piece of land that is
owned by Afrimat.
Last year Mr. Giles and Conradie took it upon themselves to get this project off the
ground, and it has since been a massive success! There are a lot of moms and children
in the house and it helps people as far as Cape Town.
They mostly live off donations and any help in any form is much appreciated - especially
by the children. It was a very humbling experience when myself and my son dropped off
29.
some old toys, bicycles and food to them this morning. It truly shows a person how privileged
we actually are. This is a true reflection on how our company makes a big difference in many
people’s lives!
HOUSE OF HOPE NEWSLETTER
Worcester, December 2013
Greetings to all our Worcester House of Hope friends. What an exciting year we’ve had. So
many blessings and even the challenges were an opportunity to grow.
HIGHLIGHTS
We experienced major problems with our draining system on the farm. The system could
accommodate 6 people but now we had 15 people in the House. Afrimat graciously blessed us
with a whole new draining system. This is a great improvement. Afrimat, we want to assure
you that we appreciate the help.
Worcester Valley Church renovated one of our bathrooms by re-doing the bathroom floor.
This has also been a great help because we could now use both bathrooms (imagine using
one bathroom between 15 people).
Worcester House of Hope was blessed to receive donations/financial contributions from
both Worcester Rainbow Chickens and Afrimat during their annual golf days in October. We
used the donation from Rainbow to buy a new freezer and fridge and that of Afrimat for
the essential needs of the residents.
SERVICES RENDERED TO OUR WOMEN/CHILDREN
During August the women and staff attended a Plumbline course which focused on inner
healing to help them process traumatic experiences and turn them into meaningful opportunities.
30.
In November they attended the opening event of the “16 Days against woman and child
abuse” held by the Premier’s office in Rawsonville.
Afrimat hired a professional catering company “Sticky Fingers” to treat us with an early
Christmas lunch. This event had a dual function. Davin Giles wanted to introduce the Worcester
House of Hope project to his colleagues, both locally and from Head Office in Cape Town.
They were very impressed by what is happening in Bethel and we shared a wonderful day
with them. Not only were we blessed with a lovely lunch, but each child received a gift bag
with sweets and a toy.
STAFF MATTERS
In August Erena van Deventer, our Social Worker of the past three years, ended her services
as a full-time staff member to follow her calling at Kibbutz El Shammah, although she is still
supporting us and is available as a volunteer.
Cornee Claassen who has been a board member and lately a staff member, left us at the
end of November. Together with her husband they are moving to Graaff-Reinet where both
accepted new jobs. The Forerunners are no longer under the leadership of Worcester House
of Hope and has moved to Kibbutz El Shammah with Erena van Deventer.
Our Social Auxillary Worker Ilse Steenkamp joined the House of Hope staff in August. She
is leaving us to continue her career at Department of Social Development in Laingsburg
at the end of December. Verna Conradie succeeded Erena van Deventer as Social Worker in
September and in November Ingrid Cloete joined us as Administrator. We welcome them both!
Tommy Louw joined the team as a General Worker and is doing an excellent job in our garden.
We have 13 beds in the House and all of them are always occupied with the women and their
children. Once again we were blessed with the birth of a baby on 29 November 2013. Mother
and baby are both doing well.

ACHIEVEMENTS
AFRIMAT SUCCESS STORY
Compiled by Johan Burger
As Afrimat is creating a culture of upliftment, performance driven and self-development,
some of the staff members took on this challenge with both hands and worked their way
towards these goals. One such member is Valerie
Hickley from Western Cape, Worcester.
She started working on the 29th April 2008 as a
general cleaner/tea lady at the Worcester office.
She also helped with administrative work in the office
in her spare time. During January 2012 we gave her
a chance to work in the laboratory where she
learned all about the material produced by Afrimat
and testing of it. She learned all the testing methods
as well as specifications of aggregates.
On the 1st of July 2013 she was promoted and started working at Brewelskloof quarry,
where she learned to work on the weighbridge. She now helps to organise trucks and
loads and work directly with the clients. She is very successful in her field and the quarry
manager Mike Coad is treasuring her with great admiration.
DENVER QUARRY
VERONICA MAJOKA
Veronica Majoka started working at Afrimat Aggregates
Eastern Cape in July 2007 as a cleaner/tea lady.
She was registered on the ABET programme and has
successfully completed ABET Level 4.

SUCCESS STORY
BOKANG BOTSANE
My name is Bokang Botsane (19). I matriculated in 2013 at Vusisizwe Senior Secondary
School with a Bachelor’s merit. I managed to get an aggregate of 70.2% for my efforts.
39.
I achieved all this because of a program
that Afrimat assists with at my school. After
being financially assisted by Afrimat, it
helped me relieve stress and boosted me to
work even harder. Through this programme
I managed to obtain 96% in maths in the final
exam. Afrimat played a huge role in my life
since 2012 when I started doing mathematics
with assistance of the Afrimat Mathematics
Awards programme. It was at the Grade 11
Award Ceremony when I was told that I was
to receive the award for Best Maths student.
I applied to study at the University of Cape
Town to do a course in Actuarial Science,
but I did not meet the requirements of 75%
and my application was unsuccessful.
I remember a quote which I lived by during my matric year and I quote as follow:
“The roots of education are bitter, but the fruits thereof are sweet”
We need more people to do what Afrimat does to our lives as students. This year I will
further my studies at U.W.C in B.Com. Accounting. My biggest dream is to be a Chartered
Accountant.
A special thanks to my teachers M. Reggie Ceaser and Shaun Harmse.

TOP WORKPLACE SAFETY TIPS
Maintain a clean work area. Not only will you remove
many hazards from a work area by keeping it clean,
but you will also provide a more productive work
environment for yourself and your employees.
Use guards and engineering solutions wherever
possible instead of relying on PPE (Personal Protective
Equipment). PPE is hard to police and uncomfortable
to wear. Find a way to prevent the exposure in the first
place. Your employees will be much more productive
if they are comfortable.
Assume your employees want to work safely and give
them that chance. Many safety incentive programmes
seem to be based on the idea that employees want to
get hurt and you have to bribe them not to stick their
hand in the machine. If you have that idea, then these
tips are not for you.
Give clear work instructions. Make sure
your employees know the right way to do
what you expect of them. Don’t just give
them a list of things not to do. Include
safety instructions in every procedure
you write.
Maintain the machinery in good working order. Many
times employees get into dangerous situations by
having to compensate for a machine defect or wear.
In the case of wear, it may have occurred so gradually
that they think it is normal.
A strong preventive maintenance programme makes
for a strong safety programme.
Spend time getting to know the work your employees
do. Even if you once did that job, it is likely it is done
differently by different people. Look at what people
are actually doing and compare this to what is written
in procedures. If the procedures are different from
the actual practice, find out why.
43.
Avoid unnecessary hazards. Look for new materials
or equipment that can eliminate the hazards your
employees are exposed to.
Maintain a clean work area, see the first workplace
safety tip above. Potential exposures to hazardous
material and conditions can be dramatically reduced simply by keeping the work area
clean. And the benefit in employee productivity and morale is worth the effort even
without the safety incentive.
HEALTH CARE
General Medical Scheme Information
WELL-INFORMED MEMBERS CRUCIAL TO MANAGING COSTS
Medical schemes, their members and service providers all have a part to play in controlling
medical inflation and a lot of this has to do with staying informed.
A big problem in the healthcare industry is a lack of balanced information and medical
scheme members are often in a weak position relative to consumers in other industries
regarding this.
A large part of a medical scheme’s responsibility is to provide members with information,
but it’s also a member’s responsibility to learn as much as they can. The medical scheme
44.
industry is complex and this is why it’s crucial for members to access as much information
as possible.
NEGOTIATING WITH SERVICE PROVIDERS:
Whilst medical schemes need to make every effort to educate their members properly about
benefits and the medical scheme environment, service providers in turn need to play their
part in not over-charging for their services. Schemes have a contract with their members,
but members must take responsibility for understanding and monitoring their own medical
expenses.
It is in members’ interest to negotiate pricing with service providers, so they can avoid
payment shortfalls.
This is very important in cases where doctors charge more than what a member’s product
allows for, as most products only pay up to medical scheme rates and any shortfalls will be
for the member’s personal account.
Making use of service providers with whom the scheme either has agreed tariffs, or a
knowledge of what they charge, is a good way to make benefits last longer. In addition
to this, paying a service provider in cash and then claiming from the scheme is also a
useful negotiating tool.
CHRONIC MEDICATION
Members who require chronic medication and treatment are usually more aware of what
their medical scheme covers and their annual expenditure.
Members can also save by asking their doctors to prescribe medicines included in a scheme’s
formularies. By using a preferred provider pharmacy the dispensing fee will be paid in full
by the scheme.
If members who don’t require chronic medication spoke to their doctors about using
generic medication where possible, it would also help to make their benefits last longer.
HOSPITALISATION
When it comes to hospital pre-authorisation, members should obtain first-hand ie. from their
medical scheme, information about any disclaimers and exclusions that may result in having
to pay co-payments and/or any shortfalls.
Some members believe that all categories of benefits should be exhausted by all possible
means. This type of mind-set is detrimental to the rest of the scheme’s members as it will
result in reduced reserves and an increase in subscriptions for all members.
45.
PATHOLOGY AND RADIOGRAPHY
Other areas of saving are pathology and radiology which contribute significantly to medical
inflation.
Duplication gives rise to unnecessary expense. Often diagnostic tests are repeated because
a member goes to a GP and then to a specialist and because results aren’t shared, the tests
are repeated.
X-rays and laboratory results are the property of the patient and members should inform
their doctor of any recent tests. Members are also entitled to clinical records from previous
doctors that may do away with the need for additional tests.
PATHOLOGY AND RADIOGRAPHY
Medical schemes can’t second-guess a treating doctor’s clinical opinion, but it is important
for doctors to be aware of the cost implications of their treatment decisions. Most doctors
agree with this; however there are some who don’t!
Medical schemes can assist with cost savings by analysing information they receive from
claims and then disseminating the findings to members via various information-sharing
mechanisms.
Medical schemes can operate more efficiently by trying to keep administration costs
within an acceptable range, even though medical costs increase faster than general inflation.
This then has a positive impact on overall subscription increases.
GLEN DOUGLAS MINE
Wellness Campaign
9 - 11 December 2013. Compiled by Ronel Rossow
• The aim of the campaign was to get the employees involved in their own health.
• 182 employees, Managers and contractors on site attended and went through various sessions.
• There were groups of 25 employees per session. Half of the group did formal training on
the wellness wheel with Care Works. The other half did screening.
46.
The wellness wheel included, physical health, psychological, spiritual, financial and sexual
health. Each participant had to evaluate themselves, and work on their wellbeing based on
this evaluation. This provided valuable information regarding a lack of knowledge amongst
employees with regard to these issues, and we based our posters on this information to
inform them.
• Out of all participants, 146 employees did HIV testing.
• Only 36 employees did not undergo the test.
• 26 of them already knew their positive status, and they are on a programme or already
on treatment.
• Only 10 employees did not know their status by the end of December 2013.
• The screening was done to test for different diseases.
• Hospice tested for High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, HIV, TB and Diabetes.
• Midvaal Local Authority provided the test material for the HIV and TB tests.
• CANSA did the PSA tests (prostate gland) for males above 40.
• One on One was in charge of weight, height (Body mass index) hip waist ratio and muscle
fat distribution.
• One on One also presented a fitness challenge, and about 85% of the entrants participated.
• On Site X-Rays did the 3 yearly chest x-rays.
• Noise banns serviced the employee’s Noise-Banns.
• The WPE’s (Workplace Peer Educators) helped Sr. Ronel Rossouw with a small presentation
in the form of dramas and plays throughout the campaign.
They also helped with the co-ordination and fluency of the programme.
• Everyone received juice and health bars at the end of their session after handing in their
Wellness Passport.
• It was very informative and the employees enjoyed the sessions.
