Eight years ago, L’OCCITANE discovered an extraordinary
plant growing wild in Corsica, with great potential. It owes
its name, immortelle, to its exceptional longevity – for even
after being picked, the flower never fades. The essential
oil obtained from Helichrysum italicum is renowned for its
anti-aging benefits.
The almond tree is a strong symbol of the Provençal
landscape. However, in recent times, its presence has been
threatened by more profitable crops. Working with the
Alpes de Haute-Provence administration, L’OCCITANE
has helped to revive the cultivation of the almond tree by
sourcing its almonds directly from local producers. With
a focus on preserving the ecological balance of the region,
we use apples that are grown in accordance with the rules
of organic farming: no pesticides, synthetic fertilisers or
GMOs – and picked when they reach maturity.
The butter extracted from shea nuts is renowned as a
universal, irreplaceable treatment that protects the skin.
To soothe the most delicate skin, L’OCCITANE has
combined the protective properties of shea butter with
the softening properties of organic cotton in its Shea &
Organic Cotton range.
Traceability
Ever since the discovery of this flower’s incredible
properties, the picking of wild immortelle has increased,
threatening the beauty of the landscape of Balagne,
in Corsica. And so, in 2003, L’OCCITANE launched a
program to grow and cultivate immortelle in Corsica using
organic farming methods. There are now eight farmers
involved in this program, who have planted organic
immortelle in the region of Aléria and in Balagne. Its
quality and traceability are guaranteed from the harvest
to the distillation of the plant, which is carried out by three
distillers. At present, this program covers 27 hectares
of land. By 2011, this figure should reach 50.
Patented effectiveness
Anti-aging
Immortelle essential oil has been patented by
L’OCCITANE for its anti-aging effectiveness at three
levels (in vitro tests):
• It multiplies collagen production by six, thus improving
skin firmness and smoothing out wrinkles
• It boosts skin microcirculation, promoting cell renewal
• It protects against free radicals, to prevent skin aging
Traceability
The almonds that we use come from orchards in the south
of France, such as the one owned by Monsieur Jaubert on
the Valensole plateau. In the mill belonging to Emile Noël,
the almonds are cold pressed to yield a rich oil. The apples,
meanwhile, are cultivated in the region around Gap, where
Monsieur and Madame Mégy are among our main suppliers.

To meet the needs of women aged 25 to 35, our laboratory
developed a patented complex that uses almonds and
apples from Provence to smooth and protect the skin. This
unique combination provides a comprehensive solution to
help the skin protect itself against the effects of aging.
Traceability
In the early 1980s, L’OCCITANE set up a co-development
program with the women of Burkina Faso. Our Shea
Butter range has been so successful that there are now
over 11,000 women working in cooperatives to produce
this ingredient for our products.
The organic cotton we use comes from Turkey.

A symbol of strength and vitality, the olive tree is capable
of surviving in arid conditions. Its resistance to dryness is
due to its leaves, which have an amazing ability to regulate
water. L’OCCITANE combines the lasting moisturizing
powers of olive leaf extract with olive oil and olive water –
obtained by cold pressing the fruits.
The famous Camargue red rice was discovered at the foot
of the Montmajour Abbey. Rich in Vitamin E and natural
anti-oxidants, it boasts exceptional nutritional properties.
At L’OCCITANE, we discovered that this red rice also
offers benefits for the skin.
Cade, or wild juniper, grows wild in the scrubland of
Provence. When heated, its wood yields an oil that was
used by shepherds in the past to protect their faces and
hands from the wind and sun. Today, we use cade essential
oil in our range of skincare products for men.

Our organic olive tree extracts come from Provence.
The olives are picked with special combs and then cold
pressed to produce a water and oil of exceptional purity
and quality. The leaves are gathered during the olive
harvest or when the olive trees are pruned.
We chose to work with «Heureuse Camargue» (Happy
Camargue) – a group created in 1960 whose objective is to
help the Camargue find an economic base for sustainable
development that respects both the environment and local
communities. «Heureuse Camargue» works with about
fifteen rice producers who grow organic rice.
The organic cade that we use comes from the Monts du
Vaucluse, near the village of Saumane. The harvesting
of cade contributes to the upkeep of the land and the
prevention of fires. The trunks are cut up into small chips
and then distilled to produce cade essential oil. In January
2009, we obtained Ecocert certification for our cade wood.
This change will apply to our formulas in 2009.

chooses its ingredients from organic
