“Journey” is a recurring theme in Scriptures. Abraham
was invited to go on a journey – leaving behind his
home and his former way of life and following a path
laid out by God. Moses led the Israelites on a 40-year
journey – an Exodus – from slavery in Egypt to freedom
in the Promised Land. Jesus is depicted in the Gospels
as journeying to Jerusalem where he would experience
the mystery of his Passion, Death and Resurrection. In fact, we are all on a journey.
Poets have mused that “Life is a journey, not a destination.”
Villa Maria Academy likewise has been on a journey. Since taking its first steps
under the nurturing guidance and leadership of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1892,
Villa’s journey has taken the school through some interesting, exciting and, at times,
challenging terrain. However, no matter how daunting that journey has been at
times, looking back we realize just how blessed we as a school have been.
Each year we welcome new students to Villa Maria Academy. As they enter
the hallowed halls of Villa as freshmen, they begin a four-year journey that will
transform them into responsible, capable, faith-filled young adults who, on
graduation day, are poised and ready to fulfill their hopes and dreams and to make a
positive difference in the world.
While each student’s four-year journey with Villa is relatively brief, they in so many
ways contribute to the continuing journey of Villa Maria Academy. When they
graduate, Villa does not really leave them nor do they completely leave Villa. Each
Villa student takes something of Villa with her as she embarks on her own life’s
journey, but she also leaves behind something of herself that becomes part of the
identity, collective memory and journey of Villa. It is for that reason that we refer to
this journey as a journey of blessings—blessings given and blessings received.
This edition of the Essence gives us pause to reflect on the many ways that God has
blessed the journey of Villa Maria Academy through its students, teachers, staff and
administrators and the Sisters of St. Joseph whose spirit and charism continue to
permeate the life of the school.
With God’s grace, Villa Maria Academy will continue on this journey of faith and
blessings for many, many more years to come, helping its students on their own
journeys until we all reach that final destination—the fulfillment of the Kingdom
of God.
May God bless each and every one of you for helping to make the journey possible!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Advancement Services Manager

VillaA Spiritual Journey of Blessings
COVER STORY
By Christine Eddy
C
ountless students have encountered blessings along their
journey at VMA. These blessings are from making lifelong
friends to connecting with their faith and being closer to God.
At Villa, students are given tools and opportunities along their
journey to engage with others and lift spirits. Our students
give of their time and talents and expect nothing in return.
Although there are many students at VMA who embody this,
we have selected a few to feature in this article.
Sarah Beaver ’15 turned 16 on
November 4, 2012. She’s not your
typical 16-year-old. She wasn’t
wishing for a car for her “Sweet
16.” Instead, she requested that
in lieu of gifts, her friends donate
to the Kanzius Cancer Research
Foundation. Beaver said, “I chose
the Kanzius Cancer Research
Foundation because they are
local and are making great strides
in finding a safer treatment for
cancer.” As a result, $600 was
donated to the foundation. Beaver felt blessed after raising the
money to help with cancer research.
Villa has helped to solidify Beaver’s faith through attending
morning Mass when offered, theology classes, and more
recently praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet every day before
lunch. Beaver said, “There are approximately 15 girls who get
together to say the chaplet. This has become more important to
me since I have attended Divine Mercy Encounter weekend in
November. I also love that we have a chapel available for daily
Mass and to pray. We are so blessed to have such a beautiful
chapel.”
Beaver is also very active in her youth group at Our Lady
of Peace Church. She said, “I also enjoy participating in
Eucharistic Adoration which is offered through our youth
group.” She went on a mission trip this past summer, and she
has assisted at retreats. At Villa, she is involved in Interact and
Campus Ministry.
Beaver wouldn’t trade her time at Villa for anything in the
world. She said, “The Villa experience is just amazing, and I
have made so many friends! I have always thought that at Villa
I can be myself, and people accept me for who I am.”

Beaver was nominated by her friend and classmate Maggie
Rutkowski and was chosen as one of WJET TV’s Good
Kids. Beaver is an excellent student and a standout citizen.
Beaver enjoying reaching out to others and enriching other
lives around her whether it be through her church or VMA
community.
For as long as she can remember,
Nicole Maxson ’15 always
wanted to go to Villa. She is
enjoying her journey every step
of the way with her family and
friends at her side. She said,
“Now that I am here, each year
I realize more and more what a
special place this is. I have had
teachers who have gotten to
know me as a person, not just as
a student.”
Maxson enjoys playing the sport that she loves…basketball.
The faculty and staff at VMA support her both in and out of
the classroom. She said, “There is nothing greater than looking
up in the stands and seeing faculty, staff, and administrators
there to cheer you on during a big game. They are my family.”
Maxson appreciates the opportunities that Villa has given
her to practice her faith every day. She said, “Through saying
the Divine Mercy Chaplet with friends before lunch, morning
Mass, and being able to go to confession, I have been able to
grow in my faith because of the people that I have met here
who support me.”
Maxson participated in the 2012 March For Life with some
of her classmates and brothers from Prep. They traveled to
Washington to stand up for the rights of the unborn.
Maxson’s journey has taught her
several things along the way. She
said, “I have learned that Villa
really lives up to the four pillars
on which it is built: faith, family,
excellence and tradition.”
Alison Cooney ’14 enjoys being
part of music ministry at Villa and
her parish, Our Lady of Peace
at Villa. She said, “I have met so many amazing people in the
past two years who have helped me reinforce my relationship
with the Lord by praying with me, encouraging me, and
teaching me about my faith. In addition, attending daily
Mass in the morning has allowed me to listen to God’s words
to reflect upon the entire day. I have had the opportunity to
actively participate in school liturgies to serve the Lord and my
school, which has done much for my faith.”
Church. Her faith is important to her, and this is one of the
ways that she can use her talent to serve God and strengthen
her faith at the same time.
Villa has helped her in her spiritual journey. She said,
“Villa helped me grow in my faith through my Villa family!
Through service hours and projects that Villa does to help the
community, it is clear to me that VMA is a very giving school
that I am proud to be a part of.”
Cooney said, “Villa has solidified my faith by watching Villa
come together as a community to help others and to see how
many kids at Villa are willing and want to help the community
and others.” Cooney is grateful to be at Villa. She has grown
in her faith by witnessing the faith of others at Villa Maria
Academy and their outpouring of support to continually help
others.
Like her VMA sisters, Alison Carson
’15 has taken full advantage of all
of the spiritual activities that Villa
offers. She attends morning Mass
each day with her classmates,
participates in Mass through reading
and/or carrying up gifts . She is
also active in her church and youth
group. Additionally, she and some
of her friends pray the Divine Mercy
Chaplet before lunch each day in the
chapel. She said, “It’s a powerful way
to keep God in our days. In the coming months and year, I
hope to participate in more retreats and activities with fellow
teenagers to deepen my faith!”
Two years into her VMA journey, Carson has learned so
much about academics, faith, leadership, priority-making,
and friendship. She has met new Villa friends who have
prayed with her and have talked with her about faith. As a
student council class representative and Interact member, she
has learned the importance of being an effective leader. She
said, “I have been challenged to juggle these extracurricular
activities, my schoolwork, and athletics, which has taught
me so very much about my priorities and time management.
Most of all, my experience at VMA has taught me the beauty
of friendship. I have had the pleasure to meet my best friends
at Villa, who have taught me what it means to be a true friend
and support one another. Through obstacles with friendship
the past few years, I have only grown as a person and have
been taught that companionship is one of the most beautiful
blessings from God and should be treated as such. I look
forward to learning even more as I complete my VMA journey
the next two years.”
Villa has been an amazing influence on Carson’s life. She
said, “I can truthfully say that Villa has been one of the most
incredible blessings I have ever received. Throughout my
first half of high school at Villa, I have received amazing
opportunities, such as meeting some of my very best
friends and several influential teachers, being a part of two
awesome teams (cross country and track and field), and,
most importantly, building an educational foundation for the
remainder of my life. I have learned to embrace the person I
have been created as, because—as trite as it sounds—at Villa, I
can be myself.”
The Villa journey is a lifelong asset that is built with strong
foundations of faith and academics that help shape the future.
All that matters is where the journey will take you and for
these students, the journey has taken them to great heights in
their relationship with God, teachers and friends.
Carson’s faith has never been stronger than while she’s been

the Cathedral Prep Library for the annual cocktail party
on Thursday, October 18, 2012 to celebrate an ending to another
fantastic philanthropic year. Many enjoyed the opportunity to get
together and share their passion and commitment for Villa Maria
Academy and Cathedral Prep with other members of the school
community.
The President’s Leadership Council was established to honor
the proud legacy of Villa Maria Academy and Cathedral Prep.
The council is composed of lead benefactors to the Fund for
Cathedral Prep and the Fund for Villa Maria Academy,
who through their generosity demonstrate a commitment
to the mission of Villa Maria Academy and Cathedral Prep.
Membership in the council is open to all individuals who made a
gift of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund prior to June 30, 2012.
Amelia Werner ’13 is thankful for her Villa experience. She

the most important foundation at Villa. Because of donations
from alumni, parents, and businesses, such as yourselves,
in addition to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, a new chapel was
constructed within the past two years. The chapel has given
my classmates and me the opportunity to connect to God on
another level and continue our spiritual journey.”
Cathedral Prep Senior Bobby Oehling spoke to the members
of the Leadership Council. He thanked them for their
continuous support. “I am so thankful not only to the Prep
administration and teachers, but to you generous donors, for
your charity that has made this all possible. You have given
many students, including myself, the opportunity to have the
best education in the country, who otherwise would not have
been able to afford it.”
Thanks to everyone for your support and commitment to Villa
Maria Academy and Cathedral Prep. The total giving in the
2011-2012 fiscal year was $1,267,349 for Villa Maria Academy
and $2,964,382 for Cathedral Prep.

Journey of a Champion
Becca Hart ’03
By Christine Eddy
B
ecca Hart was dealt a hand of cards that no one likes to be dealt. She was born
with familial spastic paraleglia. She is a Para-Olympian international dressage
rider and motivational speaker. She came to speak at Villa in February in honor of
PRIDE (People Respecting Differences Everywhere) month.
Hart represents the United States Equestrian
Federation at international competitions. She spoke
about how the disease affects her and how she
worked through it to achieve her goals. “Although,
you are stuck with the cards you are dealt, you learn
how to play them. I saw a roadblock and turned it
into an opportunity. I took my anger and turned
it into passion.” That’s exactly what Hart did and
developed a ferocious drive along the way.
Despite Hart’s disability, she has won many
accomplishments and awards. She holds the title of
United States Equestrian Federation National ParaEquestrian Champion in 2006, 2008, 2009 2010 and
2012. She is also a member of the 2003 & 2007 U.S.
World Championship Team—highest ranked U.S.
rider in 2007 and took 4th place in the 2008 Beijing
Paralympic Games.
She has been on Good Morning America with Ann
Romney who requested her as a guest in order to
highlight therapeutic riding. Hart presented the
awards at the American riding championships and
Olympic selection trials where she was National
Champion for the 5th time. Following the Olympics,
she attended the Olympic party at the White House
where she met President Obama (and also
Michael Phelps).
Hart credits Villa with her success. “Without my
VMA experience, I would not be the person that I am
today. This school started my horse adventure.
VMA was my springboard to go further in life.”
Hart shared some advice for Villa students who may be facing obstacles in their
lives. She said, “Everyone has obstacles. It’s important to make the most of it. If you
constantly battle with yourself, you are missing out.”
During PRIDE month, Villa students were asked to donate $5 for the entire spirit week
to take place in the planned activities or $2 per day to participate in the different
events that were scheduled. All proceeds will benefit the Sisters of St. Joseph and
their work to prevent human trafficking as well as the “Rainy Day Fund” for students
at Villa who may need help with certain expenses due to economic difficulties. Over
$1,200 was raised.

illa Maria alumna Donna Quadri-Felitti ’79 has been named
one of the “Top 25 Most Extraordinary Minds in Sales &
Marketing” for 2012. She is being recognized for her study of Lake
Erie Wineries and how they can enhance tourism.
In 2011, Quadri-Felitti spent time researching Lake Erie’s wine
country, and she returned periodically to the area throughout the
fall of 2011 to collect data.

contributions to the hospitality, travel and tourism industries, and will be recognized during
a private ceremony during the Adrian Awards Gala, which took place on January 28, 2013 in
Manhattan. Quadri-Felitti, a professor at New York University, attended the ceremony.
A panel of senior industry executives selected the 2012 “Top 25” recipients based on recent
work meeting the following criteria: creativity and innovation, cutting edge sales or marketing
campaigns, triumph in challenging situations, and sales efforts that resulted in dramatic gains.

A
uthor and sculptor, Gail Soliwada Cassilly ’65 made an appearance at the Erie Art Museum in November to
promote her book, “SALTWATER”. In it she writes about growing up in Erie and the adventures that led her to
where she is now. She resides in Saint Louis and is a sculptor, artist, and was cofounder of the City Museum.
Casssilly is thankful for her Villa experience. She said, “Villa is where I first came to
believe that I could accomplish things in life, that I was worthy of doing so, and capable
of doing so. I felt very much like I ‘belonged’ there and that sense of belonging was a
very powerful experience for me.”
Following graduation she joined the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (then
known as the White Sisters). She trained in Franklin, PA and prepared for a life working
in Africa. She said, “Before I could go there, however, the Congregation felt I should
receive a college education. My first year of college (as a nun) was spent living in
the dorm of Villa Maria College. After that first year I transferred to St. Louis and to
Fontbonne College where I obtained my BFA in sculpture. Many years later I received
my MFA there.”
Once she received her BFA, she was assigned to Malawi in East Central Africa. Cassilly was stationed in a
secondary mission school in Likuni where she
started the first-ever art program. She lived and
taught there for three years. While there, she had
an exhibit of her own sculpture at the American
Embassy in Lilongwe the capital city.
Cassilly left the convent after 10 years and
married a fellow sculptor. They adopted two
children.
The book signing was a success, and Cassilly was
overwhelmed by the support of her Villa friends
who came to see her at the Erie Art Museum.

Class of 1970 Helps Erie DAWN During Christmas
By Carolyn Beck ’70

embers of the Villa Maria Class of 1970
“adopted” clients-in-need from Erie DAWN
for this Christmas holiday. The families were
selected by Class of 1970 member, Maureen
Flaherty Dunn, who serves as Executive Director
of Erie DAWN, a local agency that provides
supportive services to Erie’s homeless women
and children.
The Villa alumni donated numerous gifts for
the families. This included clothing, books, and
toiletries for the single mother and her two
teenagers and for two additional homeless
women. Also included were age-appropriate
toys and games for the teenagers, a food gift
basket for the family, and household cleaning
and laundry supplies. In addition, there were cash
donations which were used to purchase AAA
memberships.
Pictured at Erie DAWN’s Christmas tree with the donations are
Cindy Maraghetti Taraszki, Barb Trocki Cullen, Carolyn Beck,
Nancy Gimelli Griffey, Meg Taft Mackey, Kathie Ruhl Rothrock,
Bridget Power Barber, and Maureen Flaherty Dunn.
This is the second year that the group of Villa girls, which has met monthly for the last seven years, has taken on
a Christmas charity.
Also making donations, but not available for the picture, were Mary Lou Vanchierri Reichard, Kim Webter
Wilkosz, Carol Snell Horner, Margo Fuhrman Kuhn, LaVaughn Alo Buchanan, Patty Bielinski, Jane Kofod
Rastetter, Donna Pedano Roberts, and Mary Kay McBride Szoszorek. Barb Cullen once again served as organizer.
Dunn expressed deep gratitude to the group, stating that these donations helped to brighten the holidays for
these families. “No one has ever cared about us like this before,” remarked one of the women as she accepted
the gifts.
Villa Class of 1970 Celebrates Milestone Birthdays
T
wenty members of the Class of 1970 united to celebrate a milestone: their collective 60th birthdays at The
Lodge at Geneva located in Geneva-on-the-Lake, OH. The theme for the weekend event in August was “‘70
Turns 60.” Activities included a wine-tasting tour, poolside relaxation, a late-night campfire, and a festive dinner
complete with birthday cake at local Martini’s Restaurant. The birthday girls also enjoyed their own hospitality
suite throughout the weekend.

Out to Lunch, Villa-Style
T
here’s nothing like getting together for lunch with
the girls! It’s even better when the lunchmates
are Villa Girls…and the venue is VILLA! Villa Maria
Academy has an open-door policy when it comes to
our alum. Many women have taken advantage of our
offer and joined us for lunch. They have dined in our
bright conference room, with a view of the new chapel
and the school’s back patio. They have caught up with
classmates they haven’t seen in a while. They have
reminisced about the fun times they shared when they
were students at “The Villa”.
Most of the guests are excited to tour the school to see
the state-of-the-art renovations and learn about some
of the programs that are new to Villa Maria Academy
since their high school days. They are thrilled that,
although many things have been updated to prepare
our students for the future, numerous traditions are still
in place. They enjoy seeing the current students “in
action.”
Class of 1946.
We welcome you to come back and visit any time
it is convenient to see all the good things that are
happening at VMA! If you are interested in lunch and/

Journey of Blessings
By Sister Mary Drexler ’63, SSJ, Principal
W
hen I think of a journey in the spiritual sense, I am almost always drawn to the
story of Emmaus. This is the Easter story in Luke’s Gospel where Jesus joins the
disciples on the road to Emmaus and they share with him all that had happened to Jesus
(even though they do not know that they are walking with Jesus.) They are unable to
recognize him until he breaks bread with them. At that moment, their eyes are opened,
and they recognize Jesus and return to Jerusalem to proclaim that Jesus has indeed risen
from the dead.
Every day at Villa is a journey of blessings for me. My ministry of outreach to young
people is one of amazement. These young women share with others their generosity, their
thoughtfulness, their genuine concern. Oh, yes, they are still teenagers, and they struggle
with balancing homework, outside activities, and commitment to family, but they have
wonderful hearts that are open, creative, and inspiring. They have moments of struggle
with boyfriends, classmates and moodiness but that pales in comparison to their laughter,
delight and wonder. Each day my eyes are opened, and I see Jesus in the young women
who walk these halls.
The journey sometimes begins with Mass in our small chapel. Anywhere from 6 to 16 students gather at 7:45 a.m. to begin
their daily journey with Jesus in the breaking of the Word and the breaking of the Bread. Our day always begins with morning
prayer and our daily mantra, “May my mind think no harm, may my lips speak no harm, may my hands do no harm. God of
love, may the children of tomorrow bless the work I offer this day.” This mantra has been a part of the Villa community for as
long as I can remember. What better way to begin the journey of each day than to invite God into what we think, speak and do.
As we move through the day, students will bring concerns to teachers, guidance counselors or campus ministers who assist
them in any way that they can. They work hard in their classes, and they enjoy lunch together; however, the journey doesn’t
end when the final bell rings. After formal school hours, students gather in the halls to work together or “just hang out.” In the
gatherings of folks in the cafeteria, by the lockers, in the gym or around Miss Amy Oldach ’07 in the Admissions Office, I see
young women who desire to be a blessing to others and, in turn, to themselves. If you asked them, they probably wouldn’t say
that about themselves, but I see it in who they are and how they are with one another. They are on the journey of faith, and they
are truly blessings to themselves and to others.
When I tell people I am a high school principal, they look at me with wonder and surprise, often asking if I like what I do. My
response is always something like this. I am truly blessed to be at Villa Maria Academy with these young people who are bright,
intelligent, loving and faith-filled people. They make coming to work each day a joy and a spiritual blessing.
VMA Art Teacher Gets Work Showcased
A
Jessica Alesso.
rt Teacher Jessica Alesso had her artwork showcased with other artwork from teachers
who inspire students across the country to pursue an education in the creative arts.
The show ran from March 4-April 26 at the Pittsburgh Art Institute.
Alesso crafted this piece as part of her Master of Fine Arts thesis, which she completed in
December 2011. The series is called “Altar Your Perception” and includes iconic portraits
of women who have impacted Alesso’s life. The pieces are housed in altars or shrines.
There are twelve pieces in all, which is symbolic of the twelve apostles, twelve archetypes
and twelve tribes of Israel.
Alesso was thrilled to have her art on display. She said, “While I am incredibly excited
to exhibit my work, there is always some anxiety that people will not like it or that it will
be misinterpreted. But, I think that this is also one of the amazing gifts that art gives; you
are communicating a part of your mind, your imagination and your perception to others,
and you get to interact with people in a completely different way. It’s an opportunity for
growth too. Each time I exhibit work, I have the chance to feel less anxious about its
reception, or I learn how to deal with aspects that may not have been well received. That
is what I love most about art: the process.”

There were several highlights to the evening. The four
honorees humbly accepted their awards and spoke about
their love for Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy.
During the live auction, Father Scott Jabo was stunned
when Chris Hagerty, Director of Advancement announced
the creation of the Fr. Scott Jabo Fund in the Prep/Villa
Endowment.
Hagerty announced that the fund started with two
extremely generous benefactors. Dan Shipley ’59 and R.
Ted Weschler ’79 started the scholarship with $100,000
each. Thus, we entered the evening with $200,000 in
the fund. Guests were then asked to add to the fund and
the room was lit up with paddles raising an additional
$90,000!!!!! Father Jabo was overwhelmed with emotion.
The proceeds from the auction are used to keep Prep

Children of Eden
By Andrew Harrington ’13 (CP)
Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy continued their 2012-2013 MVP
season with the production of Children of Eden. This two-act musical is
based on the Book of Genesis and the novel by John Caird, with music
and lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz. The musical opens with the story
of creation, featuring Adam and Eve, the first humans. Everything is right
and just until Eve’s curiosity and a talking snake tempt her to eat from the
fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Act two picks up several generations later
with the story of Noah and the Ark, and adds several others story elements
not included in the Book of Genesis to keep audiences guessing what will
happen next.
This production was the first of its kind because it brought together alumni
and siblings of Prep and Villa students onto the stage. The siblings of
students were called to the auditions where many took advantage of this
opportunity, including theatre veterans and first-time thespians. As part
of the Catholic Schools Week celebration, the cast had the opportunity
to become one giant family regardless of age or gender. The entire cast is
worthy of praise for all the hard work they put in piecing together this
one-of-a-kind show. It’s definitely a family show, and it’s perfect for all ages.
Fortunately, audiences recognized the hard work we put into the show as
they came to Prep’s beautiful H. David Bowes Auditorium in droves over
the weekend. As always, Prep and Villa proved that their MVP Program
stands well above those of other schools.
Participating in Children of Eden, while playing the role of The Father, was
a true honor for me. Never before have I had the privilege of playing such
a powerful and rewarding character. The cast of Children of Eden was one
of the best that I have ever worked with; they made coming to rehearsal
every day a true pleasure for me. The cast was truly inspiring, and everyone
worked well together, both on and off the stage. In a story about love,
loss, betrayal, sacrifice, and forgiveness, it is no surprise that we all quickly
became true Children of Eden.

MacBeth
By James McCormick ’13 (CP)
MacBeth is a show about a Scottish thane named MacBeth
who seizes the Scottish throne through treachery. MacBeth
(played by Nick Burch ’13 (CP), is walking with his comrade
Banquo (played by Simon Schoeber ’13 (CP) when he
stumbles upon three witches (Antonia Flamini ’13, Angela
Malaspina ’15, Hannah Kirschner ’14, and Bridget Hoag ’13
who convince him to kill his king, Duncan (Seamus Clerkin
’16 (CP). In the end, MacBeth kills Duncan, takes the throne,
and is then killed in a revolt against him.
This show is considered cursed in theater. Many actors
won’t even say the name of it. They prefer to call it “that
Scottish play.” Luckily, the MVP Department didn’t have any
accidents! The show went off without a hitch in the Villa
auditorium, and it was a big hit! The production was one to
be proud of. It had an exciting stage design and a really great
cast!
MacBeth being over doesn’t mean our MVP department is
finished though. Our theater department is putting on a
record five shows this year, and they’re all outstanding! More
recently, the MVP department has put on Children of Eden,
Our Town, and Frankenstein. The MVP department is still
looking forward to putting on In The Heights. MacBeth was
an outstanding production and a true indication of what our
theater program is capable of!

Our Town
By James McCormick ’13 (CP)
Last month, the Prep and Villa MVP Program put on Our Town. Written
by Thorton Wilder, Our Town is an American classic. When it came out
in 1937, Our Town changed American theater. It was a break from the
extravagance of the theater at the time. All Our Town called for was two
tables, two ladders, and some chairs. The show focused on the story rather
than the set. And what a story. Our Town tells the tale of every American
family. It speaks of life, death, love, and marriage. Everyone can relate to Our
Town because it’s a show about everyone.
The show follows the story of a girl, Emily (played by Antonia Flamini ’13
through her entire life. Our Town shows her growing up and falling in love,
it shows her getting married, and it even shows her struggles with accepting
her death.
The Prep and Villa production of Our Town was directed by Father Mike
DeMartinis and Father Tom McSweeny ’63 (CP).
In the production, James McCormick ’13 (CP), played the stage manager,
Mr. Gibbs was played by Nicholas Burch ’13 (CP), Mrs. Gibbs was played
by Natalie Prischak ’15, George Gibbs was played by Marco Montefiori
’13 (CP), Mr. Webb was played by Sean Taylor ’14 (CP), Mrs. Webb was
played by Mary Katherine Hoag ’13, and their daughter Emily was played by
Antonia Flamini ’13.
The show went off without a hitch and met rave reviews.

Frankenstein
By Christian Burch ’15 (CP)
Cathedral Prep’s stage was the site of
an exciting production this past March.
Frankenstein proved to be a new and intense
experience for both the audience and the
cast. Fr. Mike DeMartinis, the director,
decided that the play would be performed
“in the round,” with the audience on the
stage itself, surrounding the cast. Not only
did he direct the Frankenstein that Prep and
Villa put on, but he also wrote it, basing it upon the novel by
Mary Shelley. In addition, Fr. DeMartinis added extraordinary
visual effects such as rainfall, fog, and eerie sound and lights.
These factors combined to bring the classic story to life in a
new way never before seen by other audiences.
Fr. DeMartinis’ stage adaptation of the novel Frankenstein
stays true to book, following the success of Victor
Frankenstein’s toils that quickly leads to his misery and
eventual demise. Victor, played by Nick Burch ’13 (CP),
pursues his fascination with the power of electricity that was
engraved in his mind from a young age; he seeks to restore life
into a lifeless human form. His work comes to a conclusion
one night when he manages to bestow life upon the being
he has created. This Creature, played by Christian Burch ’15
(CP), explores the world around him, but is rejected by his
creator when Victor is repulsed by how hideous the monster
is. The Creature leaves, seeking acceptance in the world, but
is met only by more rejection and flees to Ingolstadt. Victor,
shaken by his experiences, seeks the counsel of his friend
Henry Clerval, played by Joe Weibel ’14 (CP), only to find that
misfortune has befallen his brother William, who was found
murdered.
Sickened by this news, Victor returns to his father’s house
in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is informed that Justine
Moritz, played by Bridget Hoag ’13, a family friend, has been
accused of his brother’s murder. Victor knows in his heart that
the Creature killed William, but with no way of explaining
that a monster committed the heinous deed, Justine is
condemned to death. Seeking solitude to escape from his
misery, Victor goes for a walk in the mountains where he
meets the Creature. After Victor lashes out at his monster, the
Creature convinces him to listen to his story before destroying
his wretched life. He recounts his experiences of discovery,
rejection, dashed hopes, of the murder of William while trying

to gain him as a companion, and of the framing of Justine
as his murderer. The Creature then reveals to Victor what
he desires of him; he demands that Victor create a female
creature like himself to join him in his misery, in exchange
for his flight from the world of men. Victor at first refuses
but finally consents, promising to create a female being, and
begins his gruesome task.
Victor wishes to be married to Elizabeth, played by Kate
Cooney ‘13, but knows that he must first complete the
second creature. His work takes him to Scotland, where he
destroys the unfinished female creature upon the conclusion
that it is not his right to bestow another evil creature
upon mankind. The furious Creature confronts him and
declares that because Victor has broken his promise, he
will wreak his vengeance on the day of Victor’s wedding.
In a state of horror Victor attempts to leave Scotland, but
is stopped when suspected of the murder of his friend,
Henry. It is obvious that this is the Creature’s doing, and
so in a desperate attempt to protect his family, Victor
returns to Switzerland, only to find his father, played by
Kyle Bowden ’13 CP), in poor health. He soon passes, and
it is only a short time before the day of Victor’s marriage
arrives. They complete the ceremony in peace and begin
their honeymoon without problems but then Victor’s
fears are confirmed when he finds Elizabeth dead at the
hands of the Creature. Now completely miserable and
heartbroken, Victor vows to pursue his creation until one
of them perishes. In the icy realms of the north, the creator
and created wander until at last they face each other; Victor,
weakened by his ordeals, dies at the monster’s feet, and
the Creature, although embittered by Victor’s continual
rejection, is devastated by the death of his creator and
departs from his father with a final farewell, seeking a
release from his misery through his own eventual death.
Alums Share Love of Theatre with Students
S
haring time, talent and treasure with your alma mater
are welcome attributes of any alumni. Having the perfect
opportunity to match your gifts to your high school makes
this giving even easier. At the invitation of Fr. Mike DeMartinis,
director of the theatre program, four alumni have had the unique
experience of sharing their love of theatre, theatrical experiences,
and points of view with the students of Villa Maria and Cathedral
Prep this school year.
Bill Lacey ’49 (CP) directed MacBeth on the Villa stage in
November 2012. Bill knows Prep opened doors and gave him the
foundation for his education when, 64 years ago, he appeared in
his first Prep/Villa production. “It was an epiphany for me. I was
teetering between a career as a lawyer or entering the seminary
when I discovered theatre. Subsequently, my career began.” Bill
is Professor Emeritus at Boston University and was Director of
Theatre there. He directed with Boston Shakespeare, Western
Playhouse in Vermont (one of the oldest summer theatres in the
country), and was a founding member of Saratoga Shakespeare
Company. He also taught professional Shakespeare in master
classes at Harvard and Skidmore. Some of his international credits
include guest master teacher and director at Trinity College in
Dublin, Drama Studio in London, and American College of Greece
in Athens.
Bill firmly believes acting is not just speaking the words; there is
a relationship with voice and speech and the physical to acting.
“I was so happy to work with these 30 brave Prep and Villa
students as they tackled ‘the Scottish Play’ last November. With
Shakespeare particularly, I have found over the years, when you
spend time with the text before you get on your feet, the thing
takes off. I like the kids; they were really good to work with. “
Nate Dahlkemper ’08 (CP), set designer, and Almitra Clemente
Clerkin ’81, codirector and cochoreographer, spent January on
the stage working side-by-side with Fr. Mike and 60 students and
alumni to produce and rehearse a perfect musical for our school,
Children of Eden.
“It was great to come back to Prep/Villa to design another set,“
said Nate. “My first set design was for All Shook Up my senior year.
Since then, I have designed over 20 productions. I moved into
the world of film where I’m working on TV shows, including The
Vampire Diaries, Second Generation Wayans, Tyler Perry’s The Haves
and Have Nots, and a new CBS pilot called The Surgeon General.”
Nate knows being at Prep was the best place to start his career.
“My career is taking off, but my roots will always be back in my
hometown at the Erie Playhouse and Prep. Almi cast me in my
first Youtheatre show at the age of seven, and Fr. Mike gave me
my first set design job which got me into college. Coming back
to design Children of Eden seemed like the perfect opportunity to
bring my talents back to the people and place where it all started.”
Almi performed in two shows
at Villa and one show at Prep
as a student and directed
30 shows on the Villa stage
from 1985-2005. “When I
was a student, we did a show
every other year. Now the
students have an opportunity
to work on 16 shows during
their four years!” As past
Youtheatre Director (19922006) and current Executive
Director (2006 to present)
of the Erie Playhouse, Almi
knows the value of theatre
in a young person’s life. “We
all know the arts are vital in
building self-worth, excellent

physical stamina. Learning
time management is also an intrinsic value of doing theatre.
Balancing the theatre workload with the full-time role of being a
student is tough, but totally doable. Our Prep and Villa theatre kids,
both onstage and behind the scenes, are blessed with parents
who support their work on- and off- stage every step of the way.”
Monsignor Tom McSweeney ’63 (CP), directed Prep and Villa’s
March show, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, with 30 students.
“Fifty years ago to the month, I was on stage with Tom Ridge and
Fr. Wally Packard in Arsenic and Old Lace. I have wanted to come
back and was happy to accept Fr. Mike’s invitation to direct
Our Town.”
Msgr. McSweeney is in his 18th year as religion analyst from
MSNBC, was the national director of The Christopher’s in NYC,
and founded Gannon University’s Department of Theatre and
Communication Arts.
“It was especially touching to be working with the kids who have
the opportunity to perform and work on a beautiful stage. The
actors and technicians are all developing real skills. Those who
have been in five to six shows are collegiate material already.”
Msgr. McSweeney was also impressed with the students’ sense
of discipline and aura of professionalism. “They were eager to
respond to what I had to impart. They paid attention to the
characters and not to themselves, accomplishing a lot of this
without being told.”
Msgr. McSweeney summed up what all our theatre alumni believe
–we are eager and are looking forward to the next time we can
be involved!

Graduation Projects-A Journey of Spirit and Faith
By Sr. Marianne Stuckert, SSJ
E
very year, VMA’s talented students decide to embark on a
journey, through the Graduation Project program, which
explores and showcases their talents and sense of community.
As an independent study, the Graduation Project allows
students to work by themselves or with another person to
create and execute an interdisciplinary project. This can be a
project that betters Villa, aids other schools, raises awareness
and funds for charitable organizations, or displays the specific
talents of the student. The Graduation Project expands the
knowledge or pride in the individual student(s) while also
creating a sense of community. The project can be completed
during the sophomore, junior or senior year.
After going to Kentucky on a mission trip, Jessica Beeler ’13
did a collection of food and clothing and delivered the items
personally to the Lewis County Food Pantry in Vanceburg, KY.
Several students wanted to raise money for causes that are near
and dear to them, from helping out an orphanage in Costa
Rica to helping to raise funds for Shriners Hospital right here
at home. These students put their heart and soul into their
projects by making a difference in the lives of others. A total
of 22 students completed Graduation Projects this year.
Because they love softball, Maria Colt ’15 and Emily Luteran
’13 organized a Homerun Derby to help the people served by
the Erie City Mission.
What do the children at Villa Maria Elementary School in Erie,
Pa. and the Costa Rica Asociacion obras del Espiritu Santo
Orphanage have in common even though they are over 1,200
miles apart? The answer is Villa Maria Academy. Both VME
and the Orphanage in Costa Rica have been served by students
doing a Graduation Project at Villa.
Ellie Bloomstine ’13 organized a gently worn shoe drive with
Soles4Souls, an organization that works to keep footwear out of
landfills and put them on the feet of someone in need.
Jaclyn Colish ’14 and Rebecca Patterson ’14 organized a “NoTap Bowling Tournament” to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis
Foundation. Because Jackie’s mother has MS, they raised
money to help find a cure for this disease.
Katherine Cooney’s ’13 project “Trick or Eat” collected almost
1,000 pounds of food for the Emmaus Soup Kitchen. Villa
students went out on Halloween to collect food in various
neighborhoods.
Antonia Flamini ’13 and Allison Gens ’13 wanted to do
something creative to raise money for Shriners Hospital for
Children. They made fascinators in various styles and colors
and sold them at various Villa functions.
During Disabilities Awareness Month, Emily McGovern
taught the first graders at VME about different disabilities and
how to approach someone with a disability.
Rebecca Easly ’13, Kayla Murphy ’13, Amanda Mason ’13
and Samantha Taylor ’14 went to the Orphanage when they
were in Costa Rica on a Spanish trip. Easly and Murphy
organized a Cornhole Tournament, and Mason and Taylor
brought back bracelets from Costa Rica to sell in Erie.
Sarah Beaver ’15 and Stacey Valimont ’13 organized a
fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings. Money raised was donated
to a student who is in foster care and who is going to pursue
post-secondary education. Both Beaver and Valimont were
adopted and wanted to help a student who is in foster care.

Alexa Haverly’s ’14 love for animals inspired her collection for
the animals at the Northwest Pennsylvania Humane Society.
By going around her neighborhood and writing to various
companies, Alexa collected 5,000 items.
Gloria Lose ’13 and Lacei Hubbart ’13 wanted to work with
the elderly and organized activities for the residents of St.
Mary’s Home of Erie.
Kayla Schlosser ’14 and Allison Trocki ’14 organized a cross
country race for grade school children. They donated their
profits to the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation to help
create national and global awareness of the potentials of the
Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Treatment.
Grace Wang ’13 came to Villa in 2012 from China. She raised
awareness and money so women farmers in China can start a
small business so they can support their family She sold items
that she personally brought back to Erie from China.
All in all, the projects that these students undertake require
a lot of work and dedication. At the end of the journey, they
learn many things and walk away with a happy memory that
they will always recall.

Villa Senior Organizes Food/Clothing
Drive for People of Appalachian,
Kentucky
Each year the seniors at Villa Maria Academy organize a senior
project. After attending a mission trip to Appalachian, KY,
Jessica Beeler was inspired by the people there to help out.
She took it upon herself to collect gently used clothing and
nonperishable food items for a food pantry in Lewis County
(KY), where close to 30% of the population is in poverty.
She collected healthy food items such as vegetables, pastas,
macaroni and cheese, canned fruit, cereal, and peanut butter.
Beehler collected 50 boxes of clothing, three bags of winter
coats and blankets, 40 boxes of food, and $270 in cash
donations that the food pantry will use for food. The collection
took place September 24 through October 5. Items were
dropped off at Villa Maria Academy. Beehler housed all of the
items in her garage before sending them to the food pantry.

Villa and Prep Homecoming Weekend –
Celebrating New Traditions
All the components were present for the perfect Homecoming
night at the Cathedral Prep Events Center! September 28, 2012
marked the beginning of a new Homecoming tradition at the
CPEC. Alumni, parents, students and friends were invited
to kick off the evening with a tailgate in the west end zone of
Dollinger Field. The sun was shining brightly as guests clad
in Villa blue and white and Prep orange and black, gathered
for delicious picnic food and lots of Victor and Rambler
camaraderie.
After the tailgate, the Cathedral Prep Ramblers faced
opponent Youngstown Ursuline at 7 p.m. The Villa and
Prep Homecoming Court, voted by the student body of
each campus, rode around the CPEC track at halftime in
convertibles, while each student was introduced from the
press box. Use of the convertibles was generously donated by
David Hallman and Hallman Chevrolet and Mr. and Mrs. Rick
Gotkin. The Ramblers football team ended the night with a
win, by the score of 47-7.
To round out the Homecoming Weekend, Villa and Prep
students celebrated together at the Homecoming Dance on
Saturday, September 29. The dance was hosted at the Avalon
Hotel and Conference Center.
We hope to make the Homecoming festivities a longstanding
tradition for the student of Villa Maria Academy and
Cathedral Prep!
Seniors Jennie Fustine and Conor Colpoys were selected as Homecoming Queen and King.

VMA English Classes Collect Over 500
Boxes of JELL-O for the Food Bank
I
By Sr. Mary Ellen Plumb, OSB
D
uring Catholic Schools Week at Villa Maria Academy,
January 28 through February 1, we adopted the National
theme for Catholic Schools Week: Catholic Schools: Raise the
Standards. Each day, beginning with our seniors on Monday,
we focused on and celebrated a particular class of students,
ending with a faculty and staff appreciation day on Friday. On
their particular day, each class was able to dress down, and we
blessed these students during our morning prayer together as
a school community. By integrating our own standards of faith,
family, tradition and excellence with the overall theme of the
week, each day we celebrated a particular theme with a quote
that upheld the particular value highlighted through that day.
We celebrated an all school liturgy together mid-week with
readings and music that highlighted the privilege and grace of
a Catholic education and called each of us to our subsequent
responsibility to be witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The
next day, the classes competed at a fun assembly, with a variety
of relays and team games on stage for all to enjoy. Finally, we
ended the week with an Honors Assembly, underlying the
purpose of the week which is to highlight the solid and faithfilled education available every day to those who attend Villa
Maria Academy.
RAISE THE STANDARDS
“What we are is God’s gift to us.
What we become is our gift to God.”
– Eleanor Powell
TRADITION
“To leave the world a better place … to
know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.”
– Ralph Emerson
FAITH
“The value of consistent prayer is not that
God will hear us, but that we will hear God.”
– William McGill
FAMILY
“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner
fire goes out. It is then brust into flame by
an encounter with another human being.
We should all be thankful for those people
who rekindle the inner spirit.”
– Albert Schweitzer
EXCELLENCE
“The best techers teach from the heart,
not from the book”

n the fall, the Second Harvest Food Bank of
Northwestern Pennsylvania sent out a challenge to
local schools asking for 3,500 boxes of JELL-O to help fill

The Villa Maria Academy English Department rose to the
challenge, encouraging Villa students to bring in boxes
of JELL-O, demonstrating the mission of our school’s
founders by being generous and helpful. Villa students,
through a friendly class competition, brought in over
550 boxes of JELL-O products. The Class of 2014 alone
donated almost 300 boxes.

Villa & Prep Students March for Life
President Fr. Scott Jabo with Prep and Villa students at the “Right to Life March.”
By Marielle Trucilla ’13
Students from Villa and Prep took to the streets of Washington, D.C. to “March for Life” on January 24 and 25. Both groups of students
joined forces with people from all over the world to gather to be a voice for the voiceless, including; the unborn, those living in poverty,
the abused and anyone who has been marginalized by the rest of society. January 22 marked the anniversary of the landmark 1973
Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion throughout our country.
The group stayed at St. Thomas Becket church overnight where they attended Mass in the morning. The church provided the group
with dinner and breakfast. Students enjoyed walking around Washington and viewing the sights. They visited the Lincoln and Vietnam
Memorials and the American History Museum before marching to Congress. Their last stop was Arlington National Cemetery before
returning home.
The march was a great experience to be a part of. This is my second year going, and each year I am touched by the number of people
that attend and feel as passionate about pro-life as the Villa and Prep students. Prep and Villa students will continue to take a stand for
life when the lives of innocent people are increasingly threatened.

This year was a new one for Villa and Prep Academic Sports League
and Academic Decathlon. For the first time, we fielded one team
as one school, composed of students from both Villa or Prep. This
was also the first time in years that a Villa or Prep team attended
the regional competition. Most of the team consisted of people
new to Academic Decathlon, and the team certainly did not expect
any miracles the first year it was truly back on its feet. However,
we met success at the regional competition and placed well
enough to continue on to the state competition at State College.
Andrew Wilcox, Shaun Evans, Nicholas Ng, Christopher Konzel,
Daniel Macaluso, Sheryl Chang, Olivia Bannister, Grace Wang, and
Victoria Manzano were the team members at the regional and
state competitions. We competed well at all competitions, earning
medals in many subjects, including mathematics, economics,
science, essay, and interview. Medalists at the state competition
included Grace Wang, Nicholas Ng, and Shaun Evans, with medals
in mathematics, interview, and economics, respectively. We
ultimately had a very successful year, made some new friends
along the way, and look forward to competing again next year.

and sophomore Christine Matson were named 1st time AllMetro. The team also competed in the Western Pennsylvania
bowling championships competing in both singles and team
play. Congratulations to Coach Doug Klick and the entire bowling
squad.
The Basketball team finished unbeaten in region play, winning
their first title after moving up to AAA from AA. The team was
led by Senior Karlee McBride, who will play at Indiana University
(Bloomington) next year.
Competitive Cheerleading is popular sport throughout the
nation, and Villa Maria got itself off on the right foot. Competitive
cheerleading, sponsored for the first time by the Pennsylvania
interscholastic, Villa’s exciting new program competed in local
competitions and the 1st ever District Ten Competition. A senior
cheerleader, Kelli Kunz had this to say about our exciting new
sport:
“Competitive cheerleading was an amazing experience. Competing
our senior year was the best. We worked with Erie’s Cheer Vibe to
make our routine the best it could be. We worked hard every practice
to better our jumps and tumbling and also to make our stunts higher
and more difficult. Going to competitions is the best feeling. You
are not only cheering on your school with school spirit but you get
to show the crowd how hard you have worked throughout the year.
We went to 3 competitions and took home two 1st place trophies.
As captain of this squad I am beyond proud of every one of my
teammates.”
Congratulations to Kelli, Senior Co-Captain Amelia Wisinski, and
the entire team.

Kayla McBride Named
Big East Tournament
Outstanding Player
Add another accolade to Villa Maria
Academy’s Kayla McBride. Kayla, a junior
at the University of Notre Dame, was
named the Big East Tournament’s Most
Outstanding Player as the Irish defeated
UConn for the Big East Title.
It has been a pretty good year for
McBride. Kayla has averaged 16 points
and 5 rebounds per game for the Irish,
who are ranked #2 in the nation, and are the Big East regular
season Champions. Notre Dame is looking to get to the NCAA
Final this year, and are currently the number 1 seed in the NCAA
Tournament’s Midwest Regional. At Press Time, Kayla had just
scored a career-high 28 points in the Golden Domer’s second
round win over Iowa.
The Swim team, led by second year coach Sonya Whitman
and assistant Erin Benson, made a huge splash in the Erie pool
scene, defeating McDowell for the first time in over 20 years and
garnering a Region Championship!
The team did not stop there and it was on to districts and states.
At the district Ten Meet, the Victors won the 200 Free Relay and
placing second in the 200 Medley Relay.
The Medley relay included Christine Uht, Marielle Trucilla, Abby
Quinn, and Abby Fessler.
The District Ten Champion Relay included Meghan Simon, Helen
Tullio, Abby Fessler, and Christine Uht. The two relays set school
records, along with Abby Quinn, who set a new record in the 100
Butterfly.
