When Marc moved to Pittsburgh, he didn’t expect to
be filling his walls with local art but that’s exactly what
has happened. From the bold blue Mia Tarducci Henry
piece in his living space to the fun Terry Boyd Spice Girl

pop to white walls and more of his personal aesthetic

Newly installed protected bike lines in
Downtown/Strip District, Greenfield &
Schenley Park mark a major milestone in
Pittsburgh’s cycling renaissance.

spring, Pittsburgh will become the first city in the U.S.
to launch a bike-sharing program with 4th generation
technology. Although many have been chomping at the bit
for the launch, in this case patience has been a virtue. The
4th generation technology is more affordable and offers many userfriendly features including: Pay-as-you-go passes that never expire
and never impose penalties on users no matter the length of the trip,
on-board locks so riders can secure the bike to any standard rack
while grabbing a coffee or shopping, as well as online and mobile
reservations that guarantee users can get a bike when they need one.

‘Bike-sharing is about increasing personal mobility,’ says Bart
Yavorosky, executive director of Pittsburgh Bike Share. ‘For literally
less than a penny per minute, people will be able to use the system
to get where they need to be, when they need to be there, 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week.’ The new GPS technology will also provide
valuable data for tailoring the network to best meet the needs of
users. ‘If we see people stopping at a certain coffee shop or market,
we will work with those business owners to add racks nearby so they
can best serve their customers,’ said Yavorosky. Although the initial
network will include 500 bikes and 50 stations, Pittsburgh Bike
Share plans to expand to 1,500 or more bikes in the coming years,
providing Pittsburghers a low-cost, active alternative for getting
from A to B without being tied to a car.
