Victoria’s Spring Racing
Carnival is one of the
world’s greatest sporting
and social events which
attracts more than 650,000
visitors each year from all
parts of the globe.
The racing is unrivalled and incorporates an
array of high-profile feature events as well
as a number of sensational country cups
with a combined total of $55.5 million in
prizemoney on offer for connections.
The Spring Racing Carnival is not just
something you watch, it’s something you
feel and we look forward to hosting you
trackside during the 63-day extravaganza
where visitors can enjoy the best Victoria
has on offer in hospitality, fashion, social
interaction and great sporting moments.
This year’s Carnival will begin with Carnival
Preview Day at Caulfield on Saturday
20 September and conclude with the
Sportsbet.com.au Ballarat Cup on Saturday
22 November.
The $3 million Crown Golden Ale Caulfield
Cup, the $3 million Sportingbet Cox Plate
and $6.2 million Emirates Melbourne Cup
form the centre-piece of the Carnival,
among 19 Group 1 events.
The deeds of unbeaten superstar Black
Caviar and jockey Luke Nolen have been
immortalised in a new brand identity for
Victorian thoroughbred racing which will
first appear throughout this year’s Spring
Racing Carnival.
Global interest in the Spring Racing
Carnival continues to soar, with a
significant number of international
gallopers expected to travel to Melbourne
this year to battle it out against Australia’s
best.
The overarching brand will front
racing.com – an exciting new multi-million
dollar digital platform for Victorian racing
which will launch in September.
The spread of international entries are
particularly strong with England, Ireland,
France, Germany, Japan and Hong Kong all
represented at this stage of the Carnival
The platform will provide fans with a
one-stop-shop for everything they need
to know about the Spring Racing Carnival
– from how to plan a day at the races to
in-depth form analysis, so make sure you
visit racing.com.
This media guide includes information
on key statistics, events and race days
throughout the Carnival, as well as profiles
on our turf heroes which we trust will be of
use to you.
It is pertinent to pay tribute to some of the
sport’s heroes who sadly won’t be with us
this year. Hall of Fame jockey Roy Higgins
left us in March but he also left an indelible
mark on the racing industry through his
generous deeds both on and off the track.
The racing community also still feels a
sense of loss following the death of young
jockey Nathan Berry in April this year.
We wish his twin brother Tommy all the
best as he embarks on a promising spring
campaign in Melbourne.
Thank you for your continued support
of this wonderful event and we wish
you a fantastic Spring Racing Carnival
experience.
Bernard
Saundry
Racing Victoria
Chief Executive
We’d also like to pay respects to the horse
that opened the international floodgates to
the Spring Racing Carnival in 1993, Vintage
Crop. The Dermot Weld-trained stayer, who
was the first European-trained winner of
the Melbourne Cup, passed away in July at
the age of 27.

SPRING RACING
CARNIVAL FASHION
AND COMPETITIONS
FASHIONS ON THE FIELD HISTORY
In 1962 the VRC introduced
a competition to “woo more
women to the races”. Today
that concept, Fashions
on the Field, is not just an
institution of the Melbourne
Cup Carnival, it’s recognised
as one of the largest and
most prestigious outdoor
fashion events which has
inspired other racing clubs
world-wide.
Judging Criteria: Walking before an expert
panel of fashion, media and celebrity
identities, Fashions on the Field entrants
will be judged on their overall outfit,
millinery accessories, attention to detail,
seasonal appropriateness and deportment.
Here’s a breakdown of competitions in
Victoria.

VISUA
As part of our push to
modernise and simplify the
presentation of the sport,
Racing Victoria and the
state’s key racing clubs have
come together to create an
exciting new unified brand
for Victorian thoroughbred
racing.
Represented by a redeveloped visual
identity, the new brand – which is simply
called Racing – will fill the role currently
played by Racing Victoria, which will cease
to be a consumer facing brand and play a
regulatory role only.
The bold and modern new visual identity,
which has been developed to convey the
thrill, excitement and exhilaration of racing
by Canyon in conjunction with Naked
Communications, incorporates an image
of a horse and a rider raising his left arm in
a winning salute, framed by a commanding
shield and incorporating dynamic blue and
magenta colouring.
It pays tribute to the deeds of racing’s
champion mare Black Caviar, unbeaten in
her 25 starts, and her jockey Luke Nolen.
The brand will feature on Racing Victoria’s
newly developed digital platform, racing.
com, as well as across a new Spring Racing
Carnival marketing campaign and on
various collateral moving forward.
RACING.COM
Racing Victoria, Country Racing Victoria
(CRV) and metropolitan clubs Victoria
Racing Club (VRC) and Melbourne Racing
Club (MRC) – the host clubs at Flemington
and Caulfield respectively – have joined
together to present racing.com.
The new state-of-the-art digital platform,
which will continue to be expanded
beyond its September launch, will unite
the partners’ websites under racing.com
and provide a wealth of information on
Victorian racing under one umbrella.
The product has been designed to provide
anywhere, anytime access to best-practice
aggregated racing data information, news
and video through an ever-evolving digital
platform.
“RACING.COM is a first for
Australian Racing and it’s something
I’m pleased to endorse.
It will provide a fantastic central hub
of information for racing fans, owners,
punters and those who simply want to
plan a day out at the races in Victoria.
Consolidation of racing’s media assets
is absolutely necessary and from my
perspective I’ll be able to use the site
extensively to further analyse horse
profiles, map programs for my stable
and keep abreast of significant news
and updates.”
Australian Hall of Fame Racehorse
Trainer, David Hayes (Lindsay Park
Racing)
Whether you’re an industry participant,
punter, racehorse owner, social racegoer or
general racing enthusiast, this is your onestop shop for everything you need to know
about thoroughbred racing in Victoria.
Trainers and Owners will be provided with a
dedicated planning tool, which includes the
ability to match a thoroughbred to eligible
future races, making it a significant step
towards superior programme planning.
We have also built a dedicated MobileApp
featuring field, form analysis, news, video
and the ability to track one’s ‘favourite’
jockeys, horses and trainers.

COX PLATE CARNIVAL
Now in its third year, the
Cox Plate Carnival at The
Valley offers a unique twoday meeting which starts on
the Friday night featuring
the $1 million Sportingbet
Manikato Stakes and
concludes the following day
with the running of the $3
million Sportingbet Cox
Plate.
The atmosphere at the home of Night Racing
is electric due to the intimate setting and
amphitheatre style of the racecourse, so
you are never far from the action.
This year’s weight-for-age championship
promises to be of even greatest interest
with international horses targeting the
race, including Hong Kong’s Dan Excel and
Ireland’s Adelaide.
Trained by son of legendary Australian
jockey George Moore, John declared the
Cox Plate as Dan Excel’s next challenge
following his Group 1 victory in the 2014
Singapore Airlines International Cup
(2000m) under Tommy Berry. The two-time
Group 1 winner is now in Australia and looks
set for a big showing.
Following Adelaide’s last start win in the
Group 1 Secretariat Stakes over 2000m at
Arlington in the United States, connections
of the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt has
confirmed his participation in the $3 million
feature adding further depth to the field.
12
One of the Carnival’s most popular
events, the Cox Plate Ladies Luncheon
on Wednesday 22 October, will feature
entertainment by Anthony Callea and Tim
Campbell and showcase key racewear
trends for the Spring.

MELBOURNE CUP
CARNIVAL
The Melbourne Cup Carnival
is one of the world’s most
renowned and successful
horseracing events,
attracting more than
330,000 racegoers to
Flemington over four days
each year.
The $6.2 million Emirates Melbourne Cup
is the richest prize in Australian sport, and
the world’s richest handicap race. But it’s
much more than just a horse race; it is a
153-year social and cultural tradition that
literally brings Australia to a standstill.
Known as “the race that stops a nation”,
because most people stop to watch
the race at 3pm on the first Tuesday of
November each year, Cup Day truly is
spectacular and if you’re in town the day
before, head to Melbourne CBD to watch
the famous street parade celebrating the
race’s trainers, jockeys and owners.
While the Melbourne Cup Carnival attracts
some of the world’s best horses to take on
the locals, it also attracts a serious fashion
and social scene with an atmosphere like
no other.
With over $400,000 in prizes, the iconic
Myer Fashions on the Field is a stunning
sight and continues to grow, attracting
competitors Australia-wide.
Over the years some of the world’s most
fashionable people have graced Flemington
including the late Princess Diana, Nicole
Kidman, Sarah-Jessica Parker, Philip
Treacy, Elizabeth Hurley, Kim Cattrall, Kate
Bosworth, Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger,
Eva Longoria, Naomi Campbell, Dita Von
Teese and Kate Upton.
The famous Flemington Birdcage has
evolved from a humble car park to
14
arguably the world’s most lavish temporary
facility for VIPs and VRC Members. A
mini-metropolis is erected with sponsors
creating remarkable boutique buildings
which have become a hallmark of the
Melbourne Cup Carnival.

COUNTR
COUNTRY RACING
The Spring Racing Carnival
is celebrated outside the
metropolitan area with as
much gusto as it is within
and each year more than 50
feature country days are
held during the Carnival.
The Sportingbet Geelong Cup continues
to provide a pivotal guide to the Emirates
Melbourne Cup with many internationals
using the race along with the Jayco Bendigo
Cup as crucial lead up races before the first
Tuesday in November. Five international
horses have won the Geelong Cup en-route
to tackling the Melbourne Cup.
The Ballarat Cup race day will also feature
the state’s only clockwise flat race with the
Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) is
held for two-year-olds.
At tracks from Bairnsdale to Dunkeld,
Manangatang to Balnarring and everywhere
in between, country towns come alive with
spring racing fever, with many clubs holding
their premier annual meeting during the
Spring Racing Carnival.
This year heralds a new era for the Horsham
Racing Club when the Miller Contractors
& Plant Hire 2014 Horsham Cup is run on a
Friday for the first time, the $50,000 cup
over 1800m will be held on Friday October
31st.
Country towns enjoy a surge in population,
tourism and the local economy thanks to
spring race days with Fashions on the Field
competitions just as popular as the racing
itself.
Fashion
This year more than 30 race clubs including
five picnic racing clubs will hold race days
during the Spring Racing Carnival.
This year marks the inaugural Saturday
running of the Sportsbet.com.au Ballarat
Cup as a standalone meeting. After 3
successful year’s trialling the standalone
concept during the Autumn at Bendigo,
Ballarat have the chance to close out the
spring carnival in style.
16
In addition to the beautiful relaxed settings,
racing excitement and a great day out,
country racing offers a smorgasbord for
fashion enthusiasts.
Showcasing some of the best regional (and
metro) millinery and fashion styles, all 27
feature country cup days will play host to
a Fashions on the Field competition, with
prizes valued at up to $50,000 for women,
men and children.
Registration for all events takes place
on-course, approximately 2-3 hours prior
to competition commencement.

Edward Lynam first took out a licence in
February 1984, having previously developed
his skills under renowned horseman Jim
Bolger. Based in Ireland’s County Meath,
Lynan has had particular success with
sprinters, namely Group 1 winners Sole
Power and Slade Power, who have taken
the 52-year-old to international racing
carnivals in Hong Kong and Dubai.
It will be with Slade Power, a winner of the
Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m)
and Group 1 July Cup (1200m) in England,
that Lynam will attempt to extend his
success, with the sprinter for the Group 1
Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on 8
November.

working in his father’s Hong Kong stable
more than four decades ago.
He took out his own training licence in 1985
and won the Hong Kong Trainers’ Premiership
six times and trained champion horses
including Viva Pataca, Xtension and Able One.
Moore’s hopes of success in Melbourne
this spring rest with dual-Group 1 winner
Dan Excel in the $3 million Sportingbet Cox

Cavalryman is no stranger to Australian
racing, having run 12th behind Green Moon
in the 2012 Melbourne Cup for trainer
Saeed Bin Suroor and jockey Frankie
Dettori.
Dan Excel was one of the best of his
age in Ireland, running under the name
Dunboyne Express when trained at the
Curragh by Kevin Prendergast. He was a
Group 3 winner at two and three and was
sold to Hong Kong after a respectable
fourth behind So You Think in the Group
1 Irish Champion Stakes (2000m) at
Leopardstown.
Despite always showing above average
ability, 2014 has been a breakout year for
Irish sprinter Slade Power who will continue
his Global Sprint Challenge quest down
under during the spring.
But the eight-year-old galloper will return
to our shores in 2014 in career-best form
after capturing some of Europe’s feature
staying races this season.
The son of Halling landed the Group 3
Nad Al Sheba Trophy (2800m) in Dubai in
March before returning to Europe to defeat
a handy field in the Group 1 Princess Of
Wales’ Stakes (2400m) at Newmarket.
Cavalryman again prevailed at Group level
at his following start, defeating stablemate
Ahzeemah and Brown Panther in the
Goodwood Cup (3200m), a race that has
traditionally provided a reliable source of
potential Melbourne raiders.
The inform stayer will ensure he is a force
to be reckoned with in Melbourne this
Spring.
It took a while for Dan Excel to make an
impact in Hong Kong for trainer John
Moore and owner, ex-pat Australian David
Boehm, but he broke through at the top
level in May 2013, winning the Group 1
Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. He
followed that two weeks later with an
excellent second behind his high-class
stablemate Military Attack in the Group 1
Singapore International Cup (2000m) at
Kranji.
In 2014 Dan Excel has improved further by
recording his most significant win yet; the
Group 1 Singapore International Cup at
Kranji on May 18, when ridden by Australian
jockey Tommy Berry.
Slade Power booked a trip to Melbourne
with an explosive win in the Group 1
Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m), the same
race Black Caviar won in 2012, on the final
day of the Royal Ascot Carnival in June.
The Eddie Lynam-trained sprinter again
sounded a warning shot to Australia’s
leading sprinters with an impressive
win in the Group 1 July Cup (1200m) at
Newmarket, a leg of the Global Sprint
Challenge.
Purchased by Darley after that win with
an eye to standing the son of Dutch Art as
a dual-hemisphere stallion next season,
Slade Power will chase a third leg of the
lucrative Global Sprint Challenge, and a
$600,000 Victoria Racing Club bonus,

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Blue Diamond Stakes (2014)
The early part of the spring will determine
where Melbourne racing fans get to see
Earthquake this Spring Racing Carnival.
The brilliant filly was arguably the standout
juvenile of her generation as a two-yearold, scoring a sensational win in the
Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield
before heading to Sydney, where she
won the Group 2 Reisling Stakes before
a meritorious second to Mossfun in the
Group 1 Golden Slipper.
One of the biggest posers facing Godolphin
this spring, however, is whether the
daughter of Earthquake is purely a sprinter
or has the versatility to stretch out to
1600m.
Those questions will be answered in the
first couple of runs in Sydney.
If she looks capable of running a strong
mile, the Schweppes Thousand Guineas
will be her major Melbourne aim, but if it’s
a sprinting program she’s on the Coolmore
Stud Stakes (1200m) will be the goal.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Champagne Stakes (2014)
Not many two-year-olds made the
progression of Go Indy Go last racing
season.
South Australian co-trainers Leon
Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas did not
produce the filly until the Listed Cinderella
Stakes at Morphettville on 10 March, in
which she finished a well-beaten second,
but just three starts later was being feted
as a Group 1 winner.
And a mighty impressive one at that.
The daughter of Bernardini confirmed the
high opinion Macdonald – a Hall of Fame
trainer – had of her when she unwound a
paralysing sprint from last at the top of
the straight to win the Champagne Stakes
(1600m) in Sydney.
It was a performance that ensured she
was prominent in early markets for the
Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m)
and had her at the head of betting for the
Crown Oaks (2500m).
Some suggest she might even be able to do
what only one filly – Surround, in 1976 – has
been able to achieve and win the Cox Plate.

Going into last year’s Spring Racing
Carnival, Lankan Rupee was a horse only
hard-core racing fans would have heard of.
Twelve months on, he can lay claim to being
the highest-profile racehorse horse in
Australia.
Since being gelded, Lankan Rupee has been
beaten just once in eight starts, in a heat of
the Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge,
after which he was found to be suffering
from the thumps.
He won his subsequent six starts, starting
with two support sprints races at the end
of last year’s Spring Racing Carnival. His
first start of 2014 produced victory in the
Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m), he then
broke through for Group 1 success in the
Oakleigh Plate (1100m) before following
up with victory in Victoria’s biggest sprint
handicap – the Newmarket Handicap
(1200m).
He then won the richest sprint race ever
conducted in Australia, the $2.5 million T.J.
Smith Stakes (1200m), at Randwick.
The five-year-old has been set on
optimistic spring path, starting with the
Group 1 McEwen Stakes (1000m) – Moir
Stakes (1200m) and Manikato Stakes
(1200m) – before a crack at the Group 1
Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTs
Doncaster Mile (2013 & 2014)
Sacred Falls emulated a couple of all-time
greats of Australian racing when he won a
second Doncaster Mile at Randwick earlier
this year.
Multiple wins in Australia’s biggest handicap
mile was a feat previous achieved by only
eight horses, including legends Super
Impose and Sunline.
Those Hall of Famers also adorn the
Sportingbet Cox Plate honour roll and that
is the race champion Sydney trainer Chris
Waller is targeting with the former Kiwi
entire.
The five-year-old son of O’Reilly competed
at last year’s Spring Racing Carnival, where
he had little luck when third in the Crystal
Mile on Cox Plate Day before a fifth placing
in the Emirates Stakes.
But he rose to another level in the second
half of the season when he lumped 56.5kg
in his repeat Doncaster success and the
following week beat home all bar It’s A
Dundeel – who started favourite in last
year’s Cox Plate – in the rich Queen
Elizabeth Stakes.
STARTS 26: 10-3-2, $2,792,032

CAREER HIGHLIGHT The BMW (2014)
From the time Silent Achiever dominated
her local three-year-old features,
highlighted by a stunning win over the boys
in the 2012 New Zealand Derby (2400m),
she has been touted as one of the possible
stars of Australasian racing.
And the daughter of O’Reilly has competed
well at the Spring Racing Carnival
previously, including victory in the 2012
Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate
Day, but had been unable to exert her
influence at Group 1 level.
That all changed last autumn, when she
made the leap from potential star to bona
fide A-lister.
After Group 1 victory in the New Zealand
Stakes (2000m) in her homeland, the Roger
James-trained mare headed to Sydney
where she won the Ranvet Stakes (2000m)
and The BMW (2400m), also at Group 1
level.
She is being trained to peak for the $6
million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m)
on 4 November, but a mark of her versatility
is that she is also considered a leading
contender for both the $3 million Caulfield
Cup (2400m) – a race she finished eighth in
last year – and the $3 million Sportingbet
Cox Plate (2040m).
STARTS 17: 6-2-3, $1,173,629
GROUP 1 WINS One
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Sydney Cup (2014)
The Offer no stranger to winning Spring
Racing Carnival features, having won the
main race at the final meeting of last year’s
extravaganza – the listed Ballarat Cup.
But Gai Waterhouse is eyeing much bigger
prizes with her imported star this year, who
entered the 2014/15 season favourite for
the Emirates Melbourne Cup and second
favourite for the Caulfield Cup.
He held such a rating because of his deeds
during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The
son of Montjeu, a six-year-old by Southern
Hemisphere time won his final three starts
of the campaign, culminating with an
emphatic victory in the Group 1 Sydney
Cup (3200m).
He will not only be looking to give
Waterhouse back-to-back wins in the
Melbourne Cup, following the Hall of Fame
trainer’s win last year with Fiorente, but
also join immortals Carbine and Makybe
Diva as the only horses to win the Sydney
Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same
calendar year.

Cup week with Boban, Red Tracer and

2013/2014 Waller trained seven Group 1

Vibrant, colourful and highly successful,
Waterhouse is Australia’s first lady of
racing. Her ability to transcend racing and
reach the broader community is without
peer.
Waterhouse is the daughter of legendary
Hall Of Fame trainer T. J Smith and has
been one of the most dominant trainers of
the last 20 years. She first won the Sydney
trainers’ premiership in 1996-97 and has
repeated this feat on numerous occasions.
2013 provided Waterhouse with her biggest

took out the Melbourne Cup. Waterhouse
will again be targeting the world’s richest
