BMW Car Club of British Columbia
President’s Message
Greetings fellow bimmer and beamer
enthusiasts. By the time you’re reading
this edition of the newsletter, we will be
well into our summer season of events,
that have ranged from day drives, car
control clinics, tours, and tech sessions,
all designed to appeal to the broad cross
section of our membership and offer
something for everyone to enjoy and
participate in club activities.
Club membership continues to grow,
and our member numbers and associates
are well in excess of 400 people. Treasurer
Ian Clark reports that the club financial
position is sound, and this has allowed us
to “get ahead of the game” with purchases of club branded items, most
notably our very professionally produced
club grill badges, and a stock of club Tshirts, and sew on patches for hats and
jackets. All these items are available for
purchase at club events, or contact
Thomas Fink through the club website. If
you haven’t already “accessorized” your
pride and joy with a grill badge, it’s time
you did, they look great!
As I said, we’re well into our season,
and our “main event” the club Concours
is fast approaching for the 28th of August
at Waterfront Park on the North Shore.
Check out all the information on the
website, and plan to clean up your vehicle
and come out for the day. It promises to
be a fun family outing, with detailing
displays, dealer participation, Bavarian
brats, and a full range of fine machinery
in both display and judged categories.
Not much to report on club activities
at the National level, our club continues
to be represented with Rolf Drommer our
Member Services Director serving as
secretary to Club Canada, and Phil
Abrami, President of Club Canada serving
New Members
as Vice President-Automobiles, with the
International Council of BMW Clubs. It is
encouraging to report that the activity of
the International Council, through
Mobile Tradition, is raising the profile of
clubs around the world with BMW AG
marketing and dealership units, and we
hopefully will see a trickle down effect at
our own club level with better credibility
and support at the dealer level.
In closing, if we haven’t seen you at
any club events as yet this years, you are
missing out on some good times, and
good friendships. So do plan to come out
and participate. As we have often said, it’s
your club, and you get out of it what you
put in. Maybe see you at the Concours ??
As always Drive safely, and drive well

Member Day 2004
July 11, 2004
Park Shore BMW graciously made
room for us at their new facility in the
North Shore Automall for our 4th annual
member day event.
The day started with directors and past
directors showing up early to set up,
including a BBQ gas grill brought in by
Scott Gable. Thanks Scott.
By noon members started arriving,
just as the first batch of Bavarian Smokies
done to perfection by a team of directors
were sizzling on the grill.
The new facility at Park Shore
As the day progessed some 36 member
cars filled the parking area and over 56
members dropped by to enjoy the social
part of the day, and also to look at and
explore the new facilities at Park Shore.
(Park Shore has been at their new
location for a while but this is the first
club function meant to bring members to
their site.)
Many thanks to Park Shore for
helping make this another successful
member day. We hope to see more of you
at next year’s event.
President Jim Westmacott thanks Peter Ryce for Park Shore’s participation.
Editorial Policy
Ausblick is the quarterly newsletter of the BMW
Car Club of British Columbia. It is mailed to all
current paid up members, as well as select BMW
friends and to the editors of other BMW clubs in our
region. Ausblick reports on newsworthy events in the
club, including club events, and our annual general
meeting. It attempts to reflect all segments of our
club and our members. We welcome submissions of
articles, photos and news releases to Ausblick;
however, publication is at the editors’ discretion,
based on the criteria of news worthiness, relevance to
readers, length and balance. Ausblick attempts to
publish all letters to the editor, although they may be
edited for brevity and clarity.

Maintaining Contact
by Rolf Drommer - Member Services
We have already completed over half
of the events the club has planned for
2004, and the attendance at events has
been great. We planned a total of 25
events for the year, which is down a bit
from some of the early years when we
planned as many as 29-30 events for the
year. In reality it seems that about 2 events
a month or 24 events a year seems to be a
good number. After all, most members
have a life and family and other things to
tend to, so keeping the list to about 24
good events a year seems to make sense.
share our love for the cars we enjoy. Our
members are the proud owners of some
460+ examples of BMWs finest, and
thanks to the BC climate we have a
wonderful cross section from rare vintage
classics, to beloved older daily drivers as
well as many new cars.
You can attend the Concours in
display mode, or you can get competitive
and compete for one of the 22 trophies to
be awarded in the judged classes. More
info on the Concours is available in this
newsletter on pages 9 and 10.
Speaking of events, have you been to
one lately? If you didn’t manage to attend
an event so far, be sure to try to attend one
of the planned events still available this
year. To date, we have had great turnout
at the events we have held so far. A total of
316 cars with 453 members their associates and family members have attended
the 15 events hosted up to mid August.
There are 8 planned events left in the year,
and we already have reservations for 26
cars and 34 participants in those events.
Check out the Road Ahead or the website
and plan to attend and event now.
Registration for all events is available online, or you can email me, or pick up the
phone and get yourself on an event list.
We continue to see steady growth in
membership numbers. Much of it is due
to members who tell friends about the
club. Currently we are unofficially the
largest member club of the BMW Club of
Canada with a voting membership count
of 455 members, which is composed of
339 master members and 116 associate
members. This issue contains the lists of
members who have joined the club since
last fall when we last posted a welcome list
of new members. Check the list that starts
on page 4 and finishes on page 17 to see if
you recognize anyone.
Events are what our club is and always
has been about. As you can see from the
event listings in this issue, we don’t do
meetings in some meeting room; we meet
at club events and have fun.
Most events are even suitable for the
entire family.
If you have not been to an event yet,
I’d heartily recommend you consider the
annual Concours and BMW Heritage
event on August 28th, it is local low cost
and can be attended and enjoyed by the
entire family.
The Concours event provides a great
way to get to meet fellow members and

Our BC 8 series owners continue to be
a very active part of our club, and in this
issue we have a mini feature on them and
some of the activities they have been
active in addition to normal club events.
They have formed a true SIG (Special
Interest Group) community that is active
both within our club and also extends far
beyond our club regions.
Our AGM is still several months away
(in November) but this is the time of year
that we get started looking for possible
candidates for directors to fill vacated
spots on the board. To that end, Stephen
Nemeth and Bob Balbirnie have volunteered to act as the nominations contacts
for members, as their terms are not up for
renewal until 2005. If you are interested
Volume 7 No. 2 2004
in serving as a director, or know of a club
member you feel may make a good
director, you can contact either of the
above with your comments and suggestions.
The BMW Club of Canada is undertaking an initiative to procure grill badges
with the national club emblem on them.
They will be of the same quality as the BC
ones we had made, as the plan is to use
the same German manufacturer. If you
are interested in a national grill badge,
contact Rolf or Thomas to get your name
on the list. Expected price will be about
$50 CDN and delivery may be the end of
this year, but may also extend into early
2005 depending on the response from the
other clubs.
That about covers if for updates as
seen from my perspective. As mentioned
in the last issue contributions and helpers
on the newsletter crew is always welcomed. It is a good way to a part of your
club.
I look forward to seeing as many
members as possible at some of the
upcoming events.
Rolf (member #005)
Are you on the email list?
We have a private members only
email list we use to send out event notices
and other pertinent club event information. It is a controlled list, and we work
hard to keep it up to date, clean and SPAM
free. We do not rent out or otherwise
distribute the list.
If you are not currently getting club
email announcements, it may be because
we don’t have your email address on file,
or the one we have is no longer current.

The BMW Car Club of British Columbia Invites You to Our
7th Annual Concours and BMW Heritage Celebration
An event for all BMW owners and enthusiasts to celebrate our cars
10:00 am to 3:00 pm
Waterfront Park, North Vancouver, BC
The purpose of our ‘Concours’ or
gathering is to recognize and appreciate
the wide variety of much loved BMW
vehicles that are proudly owned by our
members.
Participants are encouraged to bring
their BMWs and proudly show them at the
largest BMW gathering in BC.
Whether your car is a daily driver or
an exotic, or heaven forbid even a garage
queen, we have a place for you and your
car.
Most folks will probably just enter the
display class to show their beloved car.
However some like to really keep their
cars clean, and for you we have a judged
class where you can compete for one of
the 22 trophies that will be available (see
the class breakdown on page 10) Because
BMWs are meant to be driven, our
Concours is not a finicky true concour
d’Elegance like Pebble Beach and others,
however the competition can get very
tough, as we try to level the playing filed
by offering bonus points for mileage and
age.
As a bonus, all paid judged and most
display entries (first 60 cars entered) will
receive a commemorative dash plaque.
Host Dealer
In addition to all the member cars on
display, we’ll have a BMW display provided
by our host dealer, and a short detailing
info session hosted by Autoglym. We also
expect to have some other vendor displays.
We have also arranged for a German
Hot Dog Vendor so you won’t go hungry
during the course of the event.

BMW Car Club of British Columbia
Register Now for the 7th Annual Concours
BMW Car Club of BC 7th Annual
Concours and Heritage Celebration to be held at Waterfront
Park in North Vancouver BC on
August 28th.
Why should you attend and participate
in our Concours and Heritage Event? Good
question, here is some info taken from an
email sent to an enthusiast who asked just
that question.
The event is open to all, but for a car(s)
to be in a Judged class where you can
compete for trophies the owner(s) must be
members of the BMW Car Club of BC or one
of the other locally affiliated and recognized
BMW clubs such as the BMW CCA PSR, the
Vancouver Island Chapter of the BMW Club
of Canada etc..
The reason for this is we really want to
try to stop one time drop ins with show show
cars that are just on a trophy hunt.
The display category is open to all BMW
enthusiasts whether club member or not as
we want them to find out about our club and
enjoy the community we have built in our
club.
Cost for Judged entries is $20 CDN per
car and pre-registration is mandatory.
Membership [$40 year] can also be purchased at the time of registration up to 3
days prior to the event. No on site memberships for judged registrations will be
processed as we don’t have the facility to
prepare the judging and entry forms needed
for a car on the day of the event.
Cost for Display entries is $10 per car. In
both cases the fees go to defray our event
costs which are not insignificant due to the
$1800 cost of trophies and other event costs
for the day. Even at that, the club normally
has to call on sponsors and also contribute
some member funds to subsidize the event.
The Judging categories are based on the
population of cars in our club. This year we
will again have 7 categories
10
Ausblick
The 7 categories for display and judged
cars to be in are:
• Heritage
• /// M Cars (must have the M car
VIN)
• 3 Series E21, E30

Parking for vehicles at the Concours is
determined by category and whether or not
the car is going to be judged. Judged cars
and display cars are kept separate to make
the work of the judges a little easier and so
they don’t have to go hunting for the cars
they are to judge in a sea of BMWs.
We try to keep all similar category
display cars together. They will be in a
circle surrounding the paddock of judged
cars.
If you are not a member yet, I’d suggest
browsing our web site some more to find
out what the club is all about, and I’d
invite you to an event, but we don’t have
any local get together events planned prior
to the Concours. You can usually get a
good feel for what the members and the
club is all about at one of our local day
drive or get together events.
The Concours is also a fun social event,
There will be dealer displays, a detailing
tech session, and a German hot dog vendor
as our concession stand.
We encourage all enthusiasts and BMW
owners to consider participating in this
event.

Driving schools.....if the first images
you recall are the challenges of parallel
parking or a questionable eye exam, its
time for an attitude adjustment and a
more positive experience! You should
consider checking out one of our club’s
several enthusiast focused courses. After
all, the reason most people are in the
BMWCC of BC is because their cars and
driving are important to them. Many of us
spend a significant (my family says
inordinate!) amount of time, effort and
money maintaining, and in some cases,
modifying our cars for increased performance and enjoyment. The single greatest
improvement you can make in your
driving performance or experience is to
allocate a small amount of that focus and
spending on the most critical component
in your automobile, the driver. Remember, the best tools do not make an artisan,
it is attitude and training. While we all
consider ourselves above average (or
excellent!?) drivers, only frequent and
proper instruction in a suitable environment can allow someone to develop and
improve their skills.
The BMWCC of BC driving courses run
by the professionals at Driving Unlimited
provide a fun, safe, and highly effective
way to explore and learn the capabilities
and limits of both your vehicle and
yourself. The entry level course focuses on
skills such as vision, understanding
fundamental car dynamics, and controlled collision avoidance techniques
among others that will help anyone
become a better driver. More advanced
courses reinforce these learning and
provide opportunities to explore higher
performance thresholds in a legal, noncompetitive setting.
Besides personal learning and
satisfaction, the schools are a great social
event with like-minded enthusiasts who
can share their experiences over a catered
lunch. The often eclectic collections of
cars are great conversation starters and I
have enjoyed many opportunities for rides
in some awesome vehicles (even nonVolume 7 No. 2 2004
BMWs!). The next scheduled event is
August 22nd, so please consider signing
up for an unforgettable, and possibly
addictive, experience. If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me!

BC 8’s: A BMWCCBC SIG
Within the BMWCCBC, there are a
number of Special Interest Groups where
specific models and owners of our beloved
BMW’s participate in events focusing on
their specific cars. The BC 8’s is a SIG
devoted to the E31 and is growing at an
amazing rate. The BC 8’s have at this time
21 E31’s registered in their SIG.

kindly offered to put up a transient

Berkeley Ca to have the world famous
GregK super duper ant-sway bars installed
on Red #1. Ultimately a 6 hour exercise,
the install goes off without a hitch. Escape
Berkeley and Napa at rush hour then on
to Santa Rosa to crash at Steve Cohen’s
beautiful home in the Santa Rosa
foothills. Saturday morning we prepare
for the arrival of 29 E31 owners and their
significant others and a pot-luck breakfast! Then off we go to a few hand chosen
wineries to sample their (future) wares
and partake in the copious amounts of
free snacks at each location, finally
stopping at the Gallo-Sonoma Winery,
open for the first time as part of the tour.
Then back to Steve’s for another pot-luck

yet pleasant day. The guys spent a few
hours examining each other’s cars before
being hauled off to lunch at the Bedford

a very good lunch, we were off to the Fort

and wine tasting. Many bottles of bubbly
were purchased by the group, and a good
time was had by all. This event was an all
likelihood the largest ever gathering of
E31’s in B.C and in Canada.

the new 3 series on the wet oval skidpath,
new Z-4’s on an autocross track against
the clock and each other, X5’s on a
specially designed off-road course, new
M3’s on another autocross track and
finally, 4 different configurations of the
new 6 series, a 745iL and an X3 on the
largest autocross course. Pedal to the
metal everywhere (except the off road
course) and I suspect new tires installed
on all vehicles every night. The new 6 is
impressive to drive aggressively and I had
a great time on all courses. At the end of
the day, the Instructors took all who were
willing on an enlarged course in their
M5’s. The object of this ride was to scare
the pants off those of us brave enough to
venture out with the instructors. Most of
the time the M5’s were sideways under
power with smoke pouring off the tires….
And after the demonstration was over all
participants emerged with huge smiles on
their faces and laughing. What a great
day!
Saturday was devoted to a drive thru
the Blue Ridge Mountains and trying to
keep up with the lead car, a beautiful E31
CSi. The afternoon was filled with tech
sessions designed to cover a lot of
common problems suffered by the E31,
yet easily fixed. Wrap up dinner Saturday
night was filled with giveaways from the
event sponsors.
While not as large as the West Coast 8Fest held last September in Garberville
California, (84 E31’s in attendance) this
event surpassed the previous year’s Spring
Fest held in New York.
July 10 2004
The day after the Concourse at
Oktoberfest 2004 saw a Wrench Fest held
in Irvine California attended by more
than 35 E31’s. This is the 5th in a series of
West Coast events designed to get E31
owners to get some items addressed on
their cars and meet a number of other
owners, all with a common interest. This
event was attended by owners from
California, New Mexico, Washington and
B.C. Canada. While it was a long drive to
participate (21 hours), the days spent in
Southern California furthered my E31
education and knowledge base.
July 24th 2004
The Puget Sound Region BMWCCA
Concourse saw the E31 as the featured
model for the first time. Representing
E31’s from the BC 8’s were Paul Brill, Tom
Carter, Tony Thomlinson and Walter
Cunningham. In all, 26 E31’s (including
2 CSi’s and a twin turbo) were displayed
on the grass. Best in Class was Don
Dallenbach’s Calypso Rot 1991 850. Also
in attendance for the event was a large
contingent of Oregon E31’s.

E30 Hella Headlight Conversion
by Bob Balbirnie
I decided that I was going to upgrade the
lighting in Rita’s car from the stock sealedbeam halogen’s to some nice Euro spec
Hella’s…
The high/low beam lamp is installed
and working quite well however the high
beams when installed cause the high-beam
fuses to blow...
Checking through the Bentley wiring
schematic made it quite obvious that my
upgrade was not going to be as simple as I
first thought... the high-beam fuses are only
7.5 amps per side. With the Hella’s each
drawing 55/60 watts that makes for almost
10 amps per side... doh... wonder why that
fuse blows...
There are a couple of options that come
to mind...
1. Install a 15 amp fuse in the highbeam circuits, the wiring all meets specifications for 15 amp loads but wondering what
may have been tried by others.
2. Install a relay for the high-beams
to pick up the second light on each circuit
with a separate 7.5 amp fuse for each side.
3. Cut the wire feeding the high/low
combo light from the high-beam circuit so
that instead of 4 lamps on high beam only 2
(the dedicated high-beams) would be lit.
So naturally I posted a message on the
club forum:
Does anyone have any thoughts on this
and has anyone “been there, done that”
for this particular issue?
I have the same set up and simply
have higher rated fuses in the high beam
fuse sockets.
to the location of the 2 phillips head screws
that hold the bottom of the headlight
surround.
I can’t recall if they are 10 or 15
(they are green I think, I’m too lazy to go
to the car and check right now), but they
work fine.
Next shot shows the high beam lamp
being removed from the headlamp bucket
assembly. Note the headlamp retaining ring
is still on the removed lamp as is the supply
wiring. This step is just an “out with the old
and in with the new” procedure.
Haven’t had a problem in 7 years of
ownership.
Rolf
--------Hi Bob,
At one point I was going through the
fuse box on the M3, and I changed a lot
of fuses to the correct rating for that fuse.
I switched both headlight fuses back to
7.5 from 15 and they promptly blew. I
put back 15A fuses and they’re fine. I
have no idea how long they’ve been 15A,
but over 5 years of me owning the car
they’ve been fine (except for that 0.1
second with the 7.5A fuses).
Dean
So… based upon this sage advice I
continued the conversion of the H1 Lamps
in the car following Option 1 noted above
(why make it hard if you don’t have to?).
This time I took a few pictures to assist
those that may come after me with this
relatively simple job…
Thanks for any assistance...Bob
I took a shot of the drivers side front
with the hood up and some arrows pointing
out the upper keeper-clips on the headlight
surround.
And the replies started arriving:
Hi Bob
Next is a picture of the front of the car
with the hood released and down pointing

Volume 7 No. 2 2004
An important shot is one of the original
fuse installation in the fuse box. The two
fuses that need replaced are Fuses 1 and 2
(pointed out by the little arrows). The
original installation was 7.5 amp in each
location and this modification requires 15
amp fuses in their place.
I also took a shot of the fuse replacement
process.
And last is the new H1 high beam lamp
nicely installed beside the H4 high/low
combination lamp.
These beauties throw a lot of light and
protect the oncoming drivers from undue
glare associated with some North American
HID lighting.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the
“conversion”, it took approximately 1 hour
to complete the job and after doing it the
one time it would probably be able to be
accomplished within 1/2 hour total. In
retrospect the shopping took more time than
the installation. Here are the part numbers
