A larger than life figure whose work often attracted controversy as much as acclaim, he should be remembered as one the country’s most pioneering and bold filmmakers.Perhaps forgotten – or at least underrated – by current generations, the flamboyant Russell is perhaps best known for h is Oscar-winning 1969 film Wo men in Love, adapted fro m the DH Lawrence novel. The film, which also starred Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden, was a challenging and intelligent film, and when Jackson won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance (Russell was no minated as Best Director) the director found himself propelled into the limelight and able to take h is pick of edgy films. In 1971 he followed up with The Dev ils, ag ain starring Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed.Inspired by Aldus Huxley’s book.In the 1970s Russell continued to make d istinctive and varied films, with releases including his 1975 film version of The Who’s rock opera To mmy, starring Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Oliver Reed (who worked with him on a regular basis) and Jack Nicholson; the period musical The BoyFriend (1972), which starred model Twiggy, and the 1977 film Valentino, a biop ic of silent film star Rudolph Valentino. In 1986 he made Gothic, starring Gabriel Byrne, about the drug-soaked night Mary Shelley told the tale of Frankenstein, and in the 1988 cast Hugh Gra nt and Amanda Donohoe in the wild and weird The Lair of the White Worm, based on a Bram Stoker novella, which has now become something of a cult oddity. Ken Russell was a bold and daring filmmaker never afraid of a challenge...and he should be remembered as one of the greats of Brit ish cinema. OUR FAVOURITE TEAMS CORNER Liverpool F.C. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the English football club. For other uses, see Liverpool F.C. (disambiguation). Liverpool Football Club is an English Premier League football club based in Liverpool, Merseyside. Liverpool has won eighteen League titles, second most in English football, seven FA Cups and a record seven League Cups. Liverpool has won more European titles than any other English club, with five European Cups, three UEFA Cups and three Super Cups. Liverpool was founded in 1892 and admitted into the Football League the following year. The club has played at its home ground, Anfield since. The most successful period in Liverpool's history was the 1970s and '80s, when Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley led the club to eleven league titles and seven European trophies. The club's supporters have been involved in two major tragedies. The first was the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, in which charging Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse, killing 39 Juventus supporters. In the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in a crush against perimeter fencing. Liverpool has long-standing rivalries with neighbours Everton and with Manchester United. The team has played in an all- red home strip since 1964. The club's anthem is "You'll Never Walk Alone". The Story of St Nicholas (the original Santa Claus) The real St. Nicholas lived in Turkey, he was bishop of the Turki sh town of Myra in the early 4th century. It was the Dutch who first made hi m into a Christmas gif t-giver, and Dutch settl ers brought hi m to America where his name eventually beca me the fa miliar Santa Claus. Long long ago, in the days when Saint Nicholas was alive, there lived a kindly nobleman. He had a beautiful wife and three pretty young daughters, and all the money his fa mily would ever need. But one day, the mother of the fa mily, who was a sweet gentl e woman, beca me very ill. The nobl eman was frantic! He summoned the town's only doctor, a very old, very wise woman, who knew all there was to know about herbs and magic. The old woman tried all the cures she knew, but she could do nothing to save the poor woman. Finally he called for the priest to come, but by tha t ti me his poor wife had passed away. The nobleman was in despair! He missed his wife so much tha t he lost his head. He wasted all his money away on silly projects and useless inventions. He became so poor tha t he had to move his fa mily out of their castl e and into a li ttle pea sant's cottage. Meanwhile hi s daughters were growing up. Poverty was difficult for them, but they remained c heerful and strong. They soon learned to do their own cooking, cleaning and sewing, and they took ca re of each other. All three girls were very pretty. In ti me each of them fell in love and wanted to get ma rried. But they couldn't because their fa ther was so poor. He had no dowry (a sum of money or some valuable property) to give to the prospec tive husban d's fa mily. He fel t he had failed his own children, and he beca me even more sad and gloomy. Now, Saint Nicholas happened to live in the sa me area. The kindly saint had dedicated his whole life to doing good deeds, and was always on the lookout for someone i n need. One night the saint ca me riding through the town on his whi te horse looking for the house of the nobleman and his three daughters. He rode up to the cottage and peeked in through a chink in the wall. Tha t sa me night, the daughters had washed out their clothes by hand, and hung them up in front of the fireplace to dry. There were the stockings, three pairs, hanging right on the chi mney. Inspira tion struck Saint Nicholas. From his pouch he took out three li ttle bags filled with gold coins. One by one he threw the bags down the c hi mney, so they landed in the stockings of the three daughters. The nobleman, worried about hi s daughters' futures, had terrible trouble falling asleep a night and was still awake. He heard the clip clop of the white horse as the saint was leaving, and peeked out of the door. He called out to Nicholas, but he had already disappea red into the dark night. When the daughters woke in the morning, they found their stockings filled with plenty of money for their dowries. When they went to tell their fa ther, they found hi m sleeping peacefully with a smile on his face. Saint Nicholas had taken care of all his worries. And so, through the goodness of Saint Nicholas the three daughters were able to ma rry the men they loved, and the nobleman lived on to be a happy grandfa ther. The tradition of hanging up the stocking is still followed in the Bri tish Isles. It is lef t out on Christmas Eve, along with mince pies, sherry and carrots for Santa and hi s reindeer, and even today most c hildren are in bed way before midnight waiting for Santa to visi t The stocking is opened by excited children on Christmas morning. Nowadays the gif ts Santa Claus brings can be quite elaborate, in Victorian ti mes i t was traditionally fruit, nuts, sweets and coins.
