Beauty &
the Beast
Welcome to LIVE’s biggest ever issue. At 84
pages, it is a beast. It seems only right to have
local beauty, Eden Bristowe, gracing our cover.
You can read all about Eden’s incredible rise as an
international fashion model, starting on page 64.
LIVE also did our own fashion shoot for this issue’s
Spring Fashion feature. Check out the talent of our local
styling team and models, from page 50.
Spring is a time to enjoy Taranaki’s famous gardens
during the annual Powerco Taranaki Garden
Spectacular, which was known for years as the
Taranaki Rhododendron Festival. The whole event has
become very professional with six Gardens of National
Significance in our region - and one of international
significance. Most of the garden visitors come from out
of Taranaki and organisers are urging locals to re-visit
this world-class event on our doorstep. Go online, or
pick up one of their free brochures (at the i-site and
most cafes) and plan at least one day of garden visits
during the ten day festival (page 8).
LIVE FEEDBACK
Dear Ed,
Good article on child obesity, but let’s not pretend that
throwing money at the problem will make any real
difference. There are numerous government agencies doing
just that, and ironically, many report to Gerry Brownlee.
Enough said.
Andrew Small
Dear Mr Small, I’m not sure which government agency you
are thinking of, as Gerry Brownlee is Minister for Canterbury
Earthquake Recovery, Leader of the House, Minister of
Transport, and Minister Responsible for the Earthquake
Commission. I can’t think why any of those ministries
would be “throwing money at child obesity”- especially as
the Canterbury kids had the lowest rates of obesity in the
country.
Dear Ed,
In the recent election, realistically we had two choices in
New Plymouth. As a first time voter i was intrigued to see
that one was a Mr Young, and the other a Mr Little.
Mr Young was not young and Mr Little was not little.
I felt duped.
Angela Roberts
Dear Ms Roberts, Ahh, but is Mr Young old? And is Mr Little
big? I did notice James Gray (Act) was not.
When I arrived at John and Carole Lynskey’s stunning
new home overlooking the Tasman Sea to write about
it, I had no idea about the circumstances that had lead
them to build their dream home. A major health scare
and a horse, had a lot to do with it. Check out Roger
Richardson’s beautiful photography too, starting on
page 24.
I’ve also enjoyed checking out New Plymouth’s new
hospitality offerings in recent weeks, with the opening
of Deluxe Diner (page 72), lunch at Mexico (page 21),
and wine and platter at Nice Hotel’s new house bar
(page 19).
It was Terry Parkes at Nice Hotel who convinced me to
give LIVE a Facebook page. So I did it that night and am
planning on offering readers little insights into what
goes in to each issue of LIVE.
I’m already getting valuable feedback and story ideas
too so please keep them coming.
We have had a website up now for a couple of years
and you can download the entire issue there (www.
livemagazine.co.nz). Hundreds of people have already
taken advantage of this, including ex-Taranakians now
living oversea.
During October we will be planning our last
issue for the year, due out the weekend of
6/7 Dec. If you know of a story idea you
think would be perfect for LIVE, hit me up
on Facebook!

I am heading on a cruise soon and want to pack
very lightly, any tips on how to do so?

My best advice is to plan well. Start right away by making lists and store
them in a place where you will regularly look at them for ease of adding
and editing.
Pack one or two colours as your base or layering garments. Black is the
preference because most of us have black shoes and accessories. This
means you only have to take one black handbag and two accessory
looks; a long black necklace for current casual looks and a short option
with a bit of shine or sparkle for special occasions.
You will need a dressy and a casual shoe that coordinates with black
basics, one pair of jeans and one winter weight coat if required. Pack
lightweight pieces such as a layering top and a cardigan - they keep you
warm and minimize the need to take heavier items. Your cardigans and
light outerwear is where you can add a bit of colour.
Pack blouses, tops and tunics in fabrics that do not crease. High quality
polyester is lightweight and easy care - the last thing you want to be
doing on your holiday is ironing! Lastly don’t forget your lightweight
rainproof jacket. Bon Voyage!

OUTDOOR COURTYARD
PERFECT FOR SUMMER
As the weather warms up, people are looking for more outdoor dining
options - somewhere sheltered from prevailing winds, with some sun
shelter and an inside option “just in case”. The courtyard at the rear
of Our Place is perfect for alfresco dining during the warmer months.
It’s also ideal for private parties and functions this summer.
75 Devon St East, New Plymouth. Phone 758 8444
The courtyard comfortably caters
for 100 people. A new bar and toilets
are being installed in the courtyard,
making the space even better.
Food-wise, Our Place can cater for
whatever the client wants, explains
co-owner, Mark Louis.
With head chef, Erua Stockman, who
spent 13 years at the iconic Andre’s,
and sous chef Alex Mansell, who spent
four years at the much-loved French
restaurant, Our Place customers can
expect excellent food quality.
Their new dinner menu has a focus
on seasonal produce and flavours,
which features dishes ranging from
BBQ pork ribs to Thai green curry.
“At Our Place we’re focused on
creating classic dishes with a modern
twist,” says Erua. “Our Place’s new
menu is not overly influenced
by a specific cooking style. It is
contemporary New Zealand food to
suit all palates. We want the style of
the food to suit the venue.”
All of its dishes are made onsite,
including its house-made sauces, and
most of the menu can be made gluten
free, plus there are vegetarian options.
The restaurant has a reputation for
generous portion sizes, so it is good
value for money, with great service in
a casual, relaxed atmosphere.

The seven new gardens include a subtropical inner city garden with soaring
palms, a tranquil Zen garden and an
organic country garden. They are Kairau
Lodge and Vineyard in Waitara, Tropica
and Pendarves House both in New
Plymouth, Korurata in Oakura, Greenhills
in Stratford and two South Taranaki
gardens – Oughton Farm Garden in
Okaiawa, and The Hidden Dell in Hawera.
And the added bonus of visiting the
gardens is meeting their owners for NZ
Gardener magazine editor, Jo McCarroll
who has been a regular visitor to
Taranaki gardens.
“Gardeners right around New Zealand
are jealous of Taranaki’s soil and great
gardening climate,” says Jo. “The people
are also what make Taranaki gardens so
good. There are so many talented and
pioneering gardeners in Taranaki, and it
seems that everyone who lives or moves
there becomes a gardener sooner or later!
“So it’s no wonder that many Taranaki
gardens have featured in NZ Gardener
magazine over its 70 year history. I have
visited the festival several times and it’s
always exciting to see the new gardens
each year.”
And with King Garden gaining Garden
of Significance status from the New
Zealand Gardens Trust, there are also
13 gardens ranging from gardens of
Significance to National Significance
including one of International Significance.
With an impressive array of diverse
gardens and inspiring events, this year’s
festival is set to “awaken the senses”,
says festival manager, Lisa Ekdahl.
“Our programme for 2014 is an
enjoyable synthesis of some idyllic
pleasures in life,” says Lisa.
“It is a feast of food, fashion, art,
inspiring speakers and 49 of the some
of the best gardens in New Zealand
opening their garden gates. Our
Landscape Design Project this year
will wow the senses.”
Also in the event line-up are two
speaking events by Jo McCarroll on
Garden Trends, cooking seminars with
Masterchef 2014 winners Karena & Kasey
Bird, Tai Chi in the Garden, a garden
speaker series of events and the everpopular “Frocks on Bikes” event to wrap
the festival on Sunday, November 9.
“Our garden line up, events, landscape
design project, house and garden tours
will offer a tasteful experience for most,”
says Lisa.
“WOW that was wonderful is the
sentiment that we would like all our
visitors to this year’s festival to go
home with.”••

GARDEN FESTIVAL
Festival addiction
for a garden-aholic!
Residential Design
Jacq Dwyer freely admits she is happy to take a
couple of days off work to feed her festival garden
addiction. Being a self-employed interior decorator
means that’s not so difficult for the self-confessed
garden-aholic. So her next task is to get a group of
friends together to share her passion with.
“We will make a New Plymouth garden trip for the day or
a Stratford garden trip for example,” explains Jacq.
“We take the gardens in at a leisurely pace – five would be
the most in one day. After that, you start to forget what you
have seen. I usually check out the new gardens, and then
some old favourites. And we always pick a garden that we
can have lunch at and a cup of tea.”

Garden-aholics unite! From left: Molly Cole,
Clare Ford, Emma Cole, Robin Carter, Jacq Dwyer
Taking it all in and being inspired is what visiting festival
gardens is all about for Jacq whose own garden was in the
Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular for five years. Called Te
Rata, it’s a two-acre farmhouse garden in Kakaramea, South
Taranaki – just about the most southern garden in the festival.
“When I was in the festival I would only get to see about two
gardens,” remembers Jacq. “Now I can get to see a lot more
gardens which I find really inspirational. Even though I have an
established 60-year old garden, I see other festival gardens and
feel there is always something new I can do in my garden.”
Having spent countless hours working in her garden getting
it ready for the festival, Jacq also really appreciates the hard
work gardeners put in to present their gardens.
“It’s really nice to wander around and talk with the
gardeners – they are so generous opening up their private
gardens – it’s like opening up their private world,” says Jacq.
“Talking with the gardeners brings it all to life. You can get first
hand advice about where they got this or that plant and about
planting techniques. You get to learn a lot of plant names!”
A huge benefit of visiting any one of the 49 gardens in this
year’s festival is that there are plenty of different types of
gardens to sit down, enjoy and admire without having to
worry about all the things that need doing.
“I’m a garden-aholic – it’s a good addiction!” says Jacq. “It’s
physical therapy – I don’t have to go to the gym for a start.
My gardening philosophy is don’t look at what you have to do,
look at what you have done. And the simple recipe is that the
more plants you have the less room there is for weeds!”••

Masterchef Sister Act
Comes to Taranaki
They wowed New Zealand with their youthful energy as well
as their fresh culinary skills over 27 tension-packed episodes
to win the Masterchef 2014 competition and now they are
coming to Taranaki for the first time as must-taste events
within the Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular.
Winning the fifth series of Masterchef –
and the first featuring duo teams – has
been a life-changing experience for
Karena (25) and Kasey (23) Bird from the
small Bay of Plenty town of Maketu.
With no formal cuisine training, prior
to Masterchef, Kasey was studying
accounting and Karena was a quality
control coordinator at Poutiri Trust.
Following their win, the sisters are now
developing their own cook book, making
numerous television guest appearances
and hosting cooking seminars all around
the country – and now in Taranaki.
“We have never been to Taranaki
before so we aren’t that familiar with
the area,” the sisters told Live. “So we
are really excited to get down there and
see what Taranaki is all about. We are
looking forward to meeting everyone
and sharing some of our cooking and
also a little bit about ourselves.”
The sisters have explained their
cooking relationship as Kasey being “the
voice of reason” while Karena “has all
the crazy ideas”. Known for their downto-earth style, the girls are holding
two cooking demonstrations as part
of the Garden Spectacular over the
opening weekend and say they will be
demonstrating the secrets to a range of
their dishes.
“We will be presenting a few different
dishes,” explains Karina. “There’ll be a
mix of both sweet and savoury dishes,
some of our tried and true favourites
and also some new recipes made up
especially for the show. We hope that
the audience feel entertained and have
hopefully learnt something new at the
end of a class.
“We enjoy getting to interact with
everyone. We are still quite new to this
so it is always really exciting and a
little bit nerve-wrecking making sure
everything goes to plan – fingers crossed
no disasters!”
The first demonstration is being
held under The Falling Garden in
the Alexandra Room of the TSB
Showplace from 7pm to 8.30pm on
Saturday, November 1, and the second
the following day at Hollard Gardens
event centre from 11am to 12.30pm.

GARDEN FESTIVAL
Under the spell of
The Falling Garden
Literally thousands of flowers will be carefully suspended from the ceiling of the
TSB Showplace Alexandra Room to create The Falling Garden – this year’s wonderful
International Landscape Design Project funded by the TSB Community Trust.
The garden is being created by London-based installation
artist Rebecca Louise Law who is known for her
transformation of spaces using hundreds and thousands of
suspended flowers at promotional events for international
brands such as Hermes, Cartier and Gucci.
The Falling Garden is her first installation in New Zealand,
and Rebecca describes it as a “floral dreamscape”.
“Most of my installations are reflecting what’s happening
in nature by looking at plant patterns or observing the way
something grows,” says Rebecca.
“Then I imagine these themes in real life and times that
by a thousand so that it becomes a fantasy.”
Each year, the Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular adds
something completely new and inspiring with its Landscape
Design Project, says festival manager, Lisa Ekdahl.
“Last year’s creation was the Wandering Willow Elephant
Family which literally wandered to different locations around
Taranaki and were hugely popular,” says Lisa. “They enjoyed
an outing at this year’s WOMAD near the Bowl and in the
near future, the elephant family will wander to the
Brooklands Zoo for a more permanent grazing ground.”
Installed in the TSB Showplace’s Alexandra Room for
the duration of the Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular,
viewing the installation will be free, and open to the public
daily from 9am until 5pm.

says Lisa.
The Alexandra Room and The Falling Garden will also be
the venue for two events during the festival.
2014 Master Class TV show winners Karena and Kasey Bird
will be hosting some cooking classes of their classic as well as
innovative dishes on Saturday, November 1 from 7 to 8.30pm.

“We define kinetic art as works that
move due to natural forces or mechanical
devices,” explains Ms Haskell. “These can
include works that are powered by the
sun or light, water or rain, air or wind or
by human motion or electricity.”
“Kinetika is an exciting opportunity for

The new
bar in town.
I’d heard the Nice Hotel had opened this New York style cocktail and wine bar, and thought ‘if
anyone can do it, Terry can.’ Quite where he had located it in his establishment, I was curious
to see. When some friends from Wellington arrived for their first visit to New Plymouth in 31
years, we figured it was a good time to try something Nice. Words Irena Brooks Photos Roger Richardson
Plush furniture and fittings in rich dark
hues impart a sumptuous atmosphere.
Velvet brocade and chandeliers make
the bar feel like it has been here since
the building itself (1860). A select wine
list and imported beers are on offer,
along with some Taranaki flavours and
frivolously fun cocktails.
Soft music (jazz or classical) plays in
the background, where it belongs. This
is one of the few bars in New Plymouth
you can actually hold a conversation.
No screeching or clattering furniture
on concrete or wooden floors here
thanks very much.
I love that it’s small. It comfortably
contains 15 people. Bring in a few
friends and the place becomes ‘yours’.
There were a couple of other small
groups there on the evening we visited
and each group was happily chatting
away - no shouting required.
While the men opted for a drop of
Mike’s Mild Ale (made in Urenui), we
wives chose a bottle of Central Otago
red. Accompanied by a hot platter
featuring scallops, Tempura prawns,
warmed bread and Cajun chicken
sliders (amongst other things) one of
these would be easily enough to feed
two. Even with four people, it lasted us
for the entire evening.
Terry came over and explained that
you don’t have to be a dinner guest or
house guest to enjoy a drink and or
platter in the bar.
“There’s a flow that happens, as some
people head through to the restaurant
for dinner, while others might go on
to a show, or head home after winding
down from work,” Terry explained.
nice HOTEL • TABLE
The bar is Terry’s pride and joy (for
now anyway!). He and his staff have
come up with a new cocktail they have
dubbed the Taranaki Tango, which I
think should be on the list of Taranaki
must-dos, along with Pukekura Park
and the Wind Wand.
One of these cocktails is the perfect
prerequisite for viewing Terry’s Don
Driver art collection, in a little gallery
next to the bar.
The bar itself isn’t the only change
at the hotel.
If, in the past, there has been
any confusion about which door is
the entry to Nice Hotel, Terry has
cleared that up with his unique take
on ‘subtle’. A new smoked glass door
has been installed, with the words
ENTRY HERE, etched into the glass. A
glass canopy leads guests to the door,
retaining visible cues and protecting
customers from any inclement
weather.
Once through, you are immediately
in the bar.
On gorgeous spring and summer
evenings, bar guests can head through
to the tropical garden bar with drinks
and platters on the deck.
If things evolve and you still happen
to be at the bar come dinnertime, you
can dine at Table. If you can’t face the
drive home, get a bed for the night.
With Christmas approaching, a
dinner voucher or even a dinner, bed
and breakfast option, would be a nice
gift for locals. To be a ‘tourist’ in your
own town is an experience most of us
don’t ever try. It gives you that holiday
feeling, without all the travel.
06 758 6423 71 Brougham St New Plymouth
NEW CORPORATE HOUSE
In addition to the opening of the
bar, Terry has recently purchased a
contemporary three bedroom, fullyfurnished, home next door to the hotel.
“It is available for short or long-term
lease,” says Terry. Plus it adds to the
options the Nice Hotel has available
for weddings, small conferences and
corporate events.
With four self-catering suites at Best
Suites, nine rooms in Nice Hotel itself,
the award-winning Table restaurant,
the new house, plus the new bar and
garden bar, Terry has not rested on his
laurels as he continues on his quest for
hospitality excellence.

LOCATION HOMES
For local couple Campbell and Hannah Mattson, life is never dull. With two lively children
and number three on its way, they have a few projects on the go, including developing a
property, undertaking the feat of getting their home and garden ready for a family wedding
in January, at the same time as running their businesses Morph Construction and Location
Homes, and building a national franchise.
In June 2006 Campbell and Hannah
bought into a local timber and
hardware company, and began Morph
Construction, which carries out work
in the education, dairy, commercial, &
residential markets and has continued
to evolve. They are now the Taranaki
agent for Formsteel Technologies,
manufacturers of high quality wide
spanning steel buildings. Today the
majority of Morph Construction’s
work is large-scale commercial and
warehousing projects.
In 2008 the couple bought the Location
Homes Taranaki franchise.
“Some of the key benefits realized
in buying the franchise were
comprehensive & accurate pricing
software, an in-house design team, a
fresh & unique design portfolio and
highly competitive national pricing
agreements with key suppliers,” says
Campbell. The couple saw it as a
great addition to the business as it
complimented the commercial offering
of Morph Construction.
After three years as a franchisee, the
opportunity arose to take over the entire
Location Homes NZ company, which is
growing throughout New Zealand. In
2012 they became the Location Homes
Group and moved the business to new
premises on the corner of SH3 & Corbett
Road. At the same time they brought
on Franchise Partnership Manager
Dean Eggers.
Over the last two years Campbell and
Hannah have invested in developing the
franchise company, including changing
the direction for the company’s position
in the market, rebranding, developing
their business plan, national growth
strategy, operating procedures, and
client support processes.
“We have had a very specific vision of
the people who we want on board, and
we now have a fantastic team helping
to grow the business,” says Hannah.
Campbell and Hannah’s vision
for Location Homes is to provide a
bespoke design & build service for
the discerning client who desires an
architecturally inspired home, but who
may not have the budget or inclination
to proceed down the architect design
and manage route.
“We have sought to combine all the
qualities and benefits that come with
great architectural design, while at the
same time minimizing build costs and
timeframe risks,” Campbell explains.
“We achieve our client’s budget and
design brief by first establishing which of
our three design and build options that
we offer are best suited to their project.
“Option one involves looking for
design inspiration in our archive of over
700 house designs and pairing it with
the client’s brief, along with any minor
changes.
“Option two includes either
significantly adapting one of our existing
plans or creating a new design with our
in-house design team.
“Option three is a full architectural
design service utilizing the extensive
talents and resources of a team of local
award-winning architects.
“Because Location Homes has input
and oversight in the design process, we

are able to work closely with the client
and architect to ensure that the brief
is met while at all times monitoring
construction costs. This process
significantly reduces the chance of
budget blowouts or disappointed clients
who may end up with a house design
they love but cannot afford to build,”
Campbell adds.
Tying in with the design and build
options that they offer, is Location
Homes’ focus on providing Affordable
Luxury to their clients regardless
of budget.
“We will establish your top three
luxury requirements– the features you
really want in your home – and work
within your budget to achieve them for
you. When designing your home, we
carefully weigh the balance between cost
and benefit,” says Campbell. “It’s about
paying attention to the detail and those
little things that make the difference, in
the most cost effective manner. We also
carry out a value engineering study on
each project to identify cost efficiency
benefits that return savings to the client
and ensuring that customers are offered
the most robust and innovative building
techniques available.”
“We are excited about the opportunity
we have in growing our local and
national businesses,” says Hannah,
“and are proud to be growing a national
company based in our beautiful Taranaki
province.”

Authentic Mexican food and liquor in a uniquely themed setting is proving a winning formula
for the recently opened MEXICO restaurant. Located in the former Andre’s building on Brougham
St, MEXICO offers lunch and dinner options for people who have a taste for adventure, enjoy
the exotic, and possess an appetite for the unknown... Words Shelley Landon-Lane
Cross the threshold of one of New
Plymouth’s oldest buildings and you
are cast in a street scene in Mexico.
The new restaurant, named after the
country, is cleverly depicted utilising
the existing structure to resemble the
streets and alleyways of Mexico.
The scarred wooden floor, high
ceilings, sweeping staircase and
mezzanine bring together a dramatic
backdrop that is painted in bright
colours including hand painted murals
as well as an impressive collection of
Mexican-inspired paraphernalia.
Every square inch is adorned with
art and images including religious
icons, Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary,
artist Frida Kahlo, political leaders,
bulls facing bull fighters, sombreros,
donkeys, prints, tapestries, mounted
blocks and mirrors. Variations of
feminine skulls abound as the
referential motif of La Catrina
symbolising death and tied up with
the Mexican Revolution.
A shrine at the foot of the stairs
burns many candles in memory of
loved ones and wax has been purposedripped to add to the devil-may-care
attitude this restaurant exudes. The
furniture is very plain in contrast with
the surroundings. Simple wooden
tables and pew seating sit close
together designed for communal
dining and sharing. Candles inside jars
are moodily effective at night.
Overhead large metal upside-down
baskets act as lampshades.
1970s posters feature behind the bar
which hosts over fifty different types
of premium Tequila made from 100%
Blue Agave. Mexican beers are on offer
as well as Sangria and Margaritas. The
Civil Unrest wine selection can be
bought by the glass or carafe.
Lydia Jensen, who has been
bartending and waitressing since
Mexico opened in May says “there
is nowhere else like this in New
Plymouth. It’s refreshing and a
different style of dining.”
She often dines at the restaurant
with friends, never tiring of the
dishes and mentions the Mexico Fried
Chicken as the hot favourite. “It has
this magic powder that’s smoky and
spicy and tangy all at the same time.”
Manager, Nick Russell has enjoyed
the positive feedback so far and
believes that New Plymouth needed
something like this.
“The food is fresh, made on site,
authentic and palatable.”
He too, mentions the Mexico Fried
Chicken saying it’s a “life-changer.”
Every three months 85% of the
menu changes to suit the season
with the firm favourites such as the
Fried Chicken and Churros remaining.
The new spring menu has just been
launched and brings to the table
soft Tacos with a selection of fillings
such as the BBQ Pork pibil in achiote,
picadillo of pineapple & peanut crema
or try the Pipian Chicken, candied
pepitas, queso blanco, chilli & lemon
confit. Don’t worry if you can’t
pronounce the words let alone wonder
what they mean, the staff are very
helpful!
As well as Tacos there are also
Snacks, Quesadillas, Salads and
Specialities including Ancho-rubbed
prawns, Gorditas, Ceviche with pork
crackling, Flautas with pumpkin
amongst others.
Pricing is friendly, with soft shell
tacos at just $6, with specialties and
quesadillas at around $15, salads
just $12.
Talking to one of the five owners,
Nick McCaw, the philosophy behind
Mexico involved a love of food
especially the street food of Mexico,

their culture, their passion and fun
for celebrating and despite a hard life,
their will to be positive.
“Mexico has lots of elements
and layers such as gangsters and
Catholicism, Tequila, beer, their food
and festivals; we wanted to deliver
that experience to create the themed
space, make interesting fresh food and
offer value for money along with great
service.”
While it has been difficult and
challenging to maintain the
consistency throughout their stable
of seven NZ-owned restaurants
it is rewarding to see their efforts
appreciated by customers who seek
out this experience.
Local breakfast announcer, Anna
Richardson (More FM), best sums up
what Mexico means to her,
“Mexico is one of my favourite
places to go if I’m out with friends or
even just me and my hubby, I always
push for a Mexico visit! They always
welcome us like old friends ... maybe
that’s because we go so often!
“The chefs, Troyden and Heidi Waters
have an excellent reputation behind
them and I think that really makes a
difference knowing you have some of
the top chefs in Taranaki cooking for
you…my favourite thing on the Mexico
menu however, has to be the Tinto
Sangria, the tastiest drink I’ve ever had.
“I think ultimately when you add
Mexico to the mix, you are adding a
little bit of magic to your night and
you will leave feeling wonderful…that
could be the tequila but we always go
back for more!!”

BEING DAD
RICHARD HOBO
Moving the People
There comes a point in every man’s life when he finally has
enough money to buy himself a sports car. Something fast and
impractical with only two seats and possibly a soft top. Porsche
911, Ford Mustang; heck, even a Mazda MX5 or a Toyota GT86.
Of course, if said man has a family, he will instead wind up
spending his hard-earned sports car fund on a family car.
This is the decision that was recently
discussed between myself and Lorna,
so instead of looking at cars for sale on
the internet as a way of not watching
Home and Away and Shortland Street, I
began looking with actual interest.
Due to the fact that we are all taller
than average, we decided that we
wanted a people mover. I’ve always
liked the first generation Toyota Previa.
They’re big and comfortable and for
some strange reason, really quite fast.
I drove one for work in the UK, which
was almost twenty years ago and
consequently, most of them now have
a zillion kilometres on the clock and
have been possessed by smelly hippies
and foreign backpackers. Other models
were discounted on the fact that their
rear doors opened outwards instead
of sliding or had horrendous fuel
consumption. It seemed everything
had an issue and there was nothing
we agreed on. If I did find something
that looked good on the internet, it
was always in Nelson, Whangarei or
Invercargill. Turns out there a lot of
great cars in Invercargill. This was a
task that was turning into a complete
mission. Night after night, I trawled
the internet like an addict and in the
mornings, my eyeballs were tinged red
with fatigue and desperation. It seemed
that this was a search doomed to
stretch on forever.
22 I LIVE MAGAZINE I SPRING 2014
One night, Morgan and Madeline
happened to be looking over my
shoulder and asked what I was doing.
When I told them I was trying to find a
new car for us, their eyes widened with
excitement and anticipation.
“Really?”
“What kind of car?”
“Will it have a
swimming pool?”
A swimming pool? In a car? Rather
than point out to them that they might
not quite be grasping the concept, I
decided to let them run with it and
design the car they wanted. Apparently,
the ultimate family car should have
an apple tree, a banana tree, a tomato
vine and a swimming pool too, of
course, so that then we wouldn’t have
to drive to the pools when we felt like
a swim. You should be able to type
into the computer where you want to
go and then the car will drive there by
itself. It should have a mermaid house
full of water, complete with mermaid
tails for Lorna and the girls and a
shark outfit for me. Maybe a lolly shop
for Maddie and a shop selling beautiful
stones for Morgan. A table for the girls’
iPads, iPods and iPhones and a huge
umbrella instead of a roof. Two sets of
double decker beds, so we can all have
a sleep while the car is driving us to
where we want to go. Not to mention
a magic engine that spits out sparkly
bombs as we drive along. The seats
should be in the shape of love hearts
and be in all different colours with
baddies popping out of them, so the
girls can fight them with the swords
they keep in their seat pockets.
It sounded like the girls were more
interested in building a fun park than
buying a car and I immediately felt
that I’d been taking the whole task
far too seriously. Then one day, Lorna
mentioned that friends of ours were
selling their Mazda MPV in order to
trade up to a zombie-apocalypse SUV. I
agreed to go have a look at this car one
night after work and when I arrived,
the night was dark and howling with
wind and rain. The car had been driven
through some road works and was
covered in filth. We went for a short
drive and came back and wandered
around with torches, looking at all the
important things you look at when
buying a car. The back seats were
populated by boosters and baby seats,
so I couldn’t sit in any of them and
check for things like headroom and
legroom.
No swimming pool, no bunk beds,
but the girls love it anyway.

House
Just a few weeks after the shock
discovery, John had the tumour
removed and after a few check-ups
he was given a clean bill of health.
It was the nudge they needed to get
their plans for a new house underway
pronto.
“We had always been planning to do it
and actually bought the section seven
years ago,” says John. “We realised it
was time to get on with it.”
The first port of call was an appointment with architect Murali Bhaskar.
Murali designed a house for a
friend of theirs and they had seen his
work around Taranaki
“It was kind of a given really,” says
Carole, that they would use Murali.
Builder Chris Bell was an unknown
quantity however.
He started as a builder and ended
up as a darn good friend,” says John.
“Better than the other way around,”
he laughs.
The shape of the section dictated the
shape of the house, along with various
council regulations. The plot isn’t
huge and you can only build on threequarters of your land. John admits the
complexity of the build astounded him
- it was very different to when they built
their farm house 30 years ago.
Carole did a “bit of a sketch” of what
she wanted, plotting out the rooms
and living areas they were after. The
finished product is basically what
she sketched out - “but with Murali
touches,” Carole describes it.
As an architect Murali thrives on
a good design challenge - and this
was a doozy.
“We were presented with a
challenging narrow section on a cliffface street, forever in the line of severe
weather,” he reflects. “The organisation
of the house is a direct response to
the constraints of the site. It’s true
that pressures such as a difficult

He and the Boon Goldsmith Bhaskar
Brebner team worked hard to try to
maintain clear design principles in the
planning and design of the building.
The envelope is designed both to
exploit the views of the sea and the
mountain whilst also seeking to
maintain privacy.
“Carole and John wanted their home
to look unique and innovative on the
street front. We created a striking

robust materials (cedar, concrete,
glass), clean lines that are easy on the
eye and a built form that is linear and
respects the scale of its surrounds.
The layout ensures that natural light
penetrates into all spaces.
“The swimming pool is a key feature
of the design because the clients (in
particularly Carole) are keen regular
swimmers. By cantilevering the pool
towards the street front and providing
it with a glass front, it brings drama to
the façade.
“Although modern in style we worked
with John and Carole’s personal tastes
and drew inspiration from elements
of their farmhouse that they have
been living in for the past 25 years.”
The couple moved in Queen’s
Birthday weekend this year - twelve
months to the day since construction
began.
The exterior is predominantly
cedar clad, with varying horizontal
and vertical sections. A striking feature

by stonemason Andrew Benton is
adjacent to the main patio - a popular
option on windy days which still gets

stone. “He’s so gifted,” comments John.
Carole and John knew they would
miss the Oeo farm they had spent so
much of their lives building up, so
Carole found ways to bring bits of it
with them.
Photos of the ‘all black’ cattle they
breed, mountain views, the sign at
the gate with the farm’s name on,
flowers and favourite scenes from
her half acre garden, have all been
incorporated into the splashback in
the kitchen. There’s also a photo of
their racehorse Tobouggie Nights, who
has become a key part of their lives.
“Well he has paid for part of all this,”
points out John.
They have used similar earthy
colours to what they had at the farm,
in the main living area of the new
house, and an antique farm gate
originally acquired from Carole’s
grandparents’ farm in Sussex, has
been incorporated into the landscape
design.

and comfort, as if it had already been
home to generations of one family.
It doesn’t matter that the couches
don’t match. An authentic Turkish rug
contains the colourings that bring the
whole look together.
A brick feature wall adds warmth
and texture to the room and works
well with the wood of John’s liquor
cabinet.
The kitchen provides oodles of
work space, while a scullery acts
as a second kitchen, but keeps all
the workings away from view when
entertaining. Back here is a stainless
steel fridge with double doors plus
a freezer drawer and ice maker set
into the door on one side. A stainless
steel dishwasher, sink and six drawer
‘food tower’ sit on one side, while six
touch drawers and shelving to store
appliances and cookbooks, are on
the other.
“It’s been fun - not stressful at
all,” says Carole. “The builders were
amazing. If something came up they
were unsure about, they’d ring us and
we’d talk it over with them.
“In fact, many of the contractors
came up with ideas for different
aspects of the house and often we’d
incorporate those ideas,” says John.
“It was great to have that sort of buy-in
from the contractors.”
The fact Carole and John speak so
highly of their builders is even more
impressive given that they had to
live with each other for the last three
months of the build.
“I thought I’d miss them when they
were gone,” muses Carole, “but no, I
haven’t,” she laughs.
While the main floor is all earthy
tones, complemented with dashes of
colour, the top floor is all about the
sea and sky, with blue and white the
predominant hues.
The view part-way down the
staircase connecting the two floors,
is one of Carole’s favourites. “The seas
seems so full,” she says.

The house is secure from the street,
with an intercom and buzzer system
to allow entry for visitors.
Up a flight of concrete stairs you
get to the front door. To your right is
a feature pool with stepping stones,
which continue once the pool ends
and take you round to the garden at
the back of the house.
Entry to the house is into an area
by the main kitchen and lounge, with
stunning uninterrupted views of the
Tasman immediately to the left.
Massive sliding glass doors open
out on to a wooden deck with glass
balustrades. On a clear day, you
wouldn’t even know they were there.
Comfortable outdoor furniture with
puffy squabs issue a sub-conscious
invitation to sit down with a wine and
take in the view.
As you ascend the stairs to the top
storey, your gaze is drawn through
the 14 metre high windows to the
feature pool and its stepping stones.
A red urn sits in one corner and will
soon be overflowing with water once
a red light has been fitted inside and
pebbles scattered over the bottom of
the pool. John can’t wait - “it’ll look
28 I LIVE MAGAZINE I SPRING 2014
amazing,” he declares, and you can’t
help but agree.
Downstairs at street level is a
double garage, complete with drying
room and filter room, housing all the
paraphernalia for the lap pool. This
area is screened from the house by
commercial grade glass doors, as is
the impressive wine cellar next to it.
John and Carole have obviously
recognised they will need a fair bit
of wine now they have a total of six
decks and a patio to sit out in - all
with sea views.
The cellar holds 47 dozen bottles.
That’s a lot of sitting and admiring
of the views. They have a specially
conditioned fridge in the kitchen
which holds another three dozen.
John’s planning a computer system to
help him keep track of where different
labels are, and has taken an idea
from Hour Glass (formerly Montrose),
providing lockable wine cabinets for
each of his adult children.
A curved wooden ceiling imparts
a cosy feel to the room and a table
made by John’s Italian grandfather
adorns the room.
Across the hallway is a room
containing the beer fridge, as well as
the workings for the elevator, so if
mobility becomes an issue for John
and Carole in later life, they won’t
have to move.
There is also a bedroom with direct
access to the street, which is perfect
for visitors. The way the room has
been set out means it can also be
used as an office. An en suite has
been tiled in white, with a wide strip
of contrasting tiles at eye level to add
some interest.
The top floor can operate as a selfcontained apartment.
The master bedroom takes in the
stunning Tasman sea view out front,
plus the view up the coastline to
the north and the port with Paritutu.
Various windows ensure John and
Carole get a view in every direction,
whether laying down in bed, or sitting
in one of the two Stressless chairs.
The room itself is massive by bedroom
standards. Not only does it contain
the two chairs, a decent sized double
bed and custom headboard, but also
a piano! There’s still room for about
forty guests to waltz around the room!
It must be just abut the only bedroom
REAL ESTATE
TIPS FOR
MOVING HOUSE
My wife Joan and I have just completed our
15th house move. Call it an occupational
hazard! I am now fully-reacquainted with the
hassles of moving. So while it’s all fresh in my
brain, here are a few tips and tricks we’ve built
up over the years, to make moving easier.
Tape up your drawers - instead of unpacking the
drawers and putting the contents into boxes, just slide
out the drawer, tape some newspaper or plastic over
the top, and put in the vehicle for transporting. Once
you get to the new house, simply take the covering off
and slide the drawer back into its receptacle.
You might want to number the drawers and the slots
they go in to, as it is only when you go to put the
drawers back in your dressers or tallboys, you discover
that the slots they slide in to are not of a uniform size.
Put the wrong drawer into the wrong slot and you could
end up with a drawer that sticks every time you open it,
and another one that comes out completely every time
you open it.
Get a good mover. These guys know what they are
doing and are well worth the money. Let them do all
the big stuff like the beds, couches, wardrobes, fridges,
pot plants, tables and chairs. You’ll save yourself a heap
of chiropractor visits and believe me, after a day of
moving house, the wife is in no mood to give massages.
Arrange the final reading of your power and gas meters
Redirect your mail and newspaper
When unpacking, and you’re not sure where everything
goes, ask the wife. Somehow, she just knows. Or she
decides. Just ask her - it’s easier in the long run.
The absolutely first thing you need to do when
unpacking, is make up the bed. That way, once you run
out of steam, you can collapse into it. Nothing worse
than unpacking until midnight, then hunting around
for all the components of your bed, plus the linen, and
having to put it all together before you can go to sleep.
When reconnecting TVs, computers, phones, stereos
and other technology, again, get in the experts. You’re
going to have enough other stuff to do, and it only takes
these guys five minutes. You can puzzle over it all for
hours, or days even, and you’re still going to have to
get them in anyway to fix your stuff-ups. In fact, it may
take them longer if you have a go first. So just get them
in from the get-go.
Even with the most careful of packing, labelling and
planning, stuff will get temporarily lost. Relax. It will
turn up. Enjoy your new home.

in the city with a deck on three sides,
each with it’s own personality and
function. The couple like to sit on the
main deck out front with a bottle of
wine. If there’s a sports match John
wants to watch while enjoying the sea
view, he simply swivels the TV around.
“People walk past and yell out to us
“you lucky bastard,” John grins. Just like
the downstairs front deck, there is no
impediment to the view, with plain
glass panels acting as a clear wall
along the deck.
A massive walk-in wardrobe
provides easy access and storage of
clothes and footwear. There’s even two
boot drawers to keep boots upright.
John loves the rain head shower in the
en suite, while the separate toilet can
also be accessed from the hallway.
At the southern end of the hallway
is a small country kitchen, dining
table, lounge and John’s office. The
couple usually has their breakfast
here. A large picture window frames
the view of the mountain, while John
can sit at his desk and also look up
the hallway and out to sea.
There’s a deck with artificial grass
which is great for the grandkids to
play on, and another deck off the
other side of the lounge with a view
up the coast.
The dining table is from the farm and
a china cabinet from Carole’s mum
and dad have been integrated into
the decor, along with a 70 year-old
mirror.
An Irish window juts out into one
wall, an idea that came from Carole’s
scrapbook of ideas she presented to
Murali at the design stage. Every time
she came across something she liked,
she’d rip the page from a magazine
and slip it into a Clearfile pocket.
The upstairs kitchen has touches of
duck-egg blue - on the two walls, the
fridge and the plate rack - plus knickknacks picked up on their travels, of
various blue hues, sit on the shelves or

Below this living area, on the main,
middle floor, are two more bedrooms
(one with it’s own patio and two
established puka trees that naturally
filter the morning sun), the main
bathroom and laundry.
The bathroom doesn’t have a main
door and features a window set into
the large mirror that sits above the two
basins. Two doors lead to the separate
shower and a toilet.
Along this hallway are large doors
concealing massive storage cupboards,
culminating in a sandblasted glass
door that leads out to the garden.
Carole has had a section of stained
glass she found at a demolition yard,
incorporated into the top part of the
door, creating further interest.
With 330sm of floor space, there
are four bedrooms, two lounges, two
kitchens and a scullery. Though
there’s three bathrooms, there’s not a
single bath.
“We’re not bath people,” says John.
Large walk-in tiled showers with
rain-head fittings are preferred.
John comments that after spending a
weekend in Wellington recently, it was
just so good to come back to their clifftop house.
The lap pool and water feature reflect
the sunlight (and moonlight) creating
patterns of light inside and out.
Solar heating gets the 13 metre pool
to 18 degrees, with the gas heating
increasing it to the 25 degrees it is set
at. Carole went for her first swim in it
on the shortest day of 2014 - 21st June.
“I got out pretty fast though,” she grins.
She has since been for several swims
during those first few balmy weeks of
September.
“When I’m swimming,
I can’t get the grin off
my face,” she reveals.

GRANITE BENCHTOPS
Unveiling Lapitec
A new product which unites the aesthetic design appeal and superior
mechanical and physical properties of ceramics with the elegance, colours
and typical finishes of natural stone, has just been unveiled by Murray
‘Stretch’ Millynn at Granite Benchtops.
“It’s like a massive porcelain tile,”
clarifies Stretch. “You can just cut a
slab to suit the job you are doing.”
Structurally strong, and lighter than
granite, Lapitec takes a lot of heat so
is perfect for kitchen bench tops. Its
non-absorbent surface, makes it stain
resistant and hygienic, easy to clean as
well as bacteria and mould repellant.
Biotech technology also gives Lapitec
“self-cleaning” properties, degrading
organic matter with oxidisation, and
hydrophilic properties promoting a
washing effect to remove polluting
particles from the surface.
Available in a range of colours, Lapitec
also has three different finishes: Satin
(a silky sheen soft to touch), Lux (a
polished mirrored surface effect)
and Vesuvio (leather-look), giving the
designer a choice of 48 different colour/
design solutions.
Though kitchens and bathrooms are
the obvious place to use Lapitec, it
can also be used outside. It is ideal
for outdoor areas, barbecue areas, fire
surrounds and round the pool or
wherever you need a stone effect
with anti-slip properties. Commercial
options like building exteriors and tiled
floors in shopping malls are seeing the
product being picked up by innovative
architects and builders.
Made in Italy, the Lapitec range
incorporates that innate Italian sense
of style. It is environmentally inert, in
that it doesn’t release any substance
into the environment. It also offers
improved thermal insulation when
used for cladding, is resistant to acids,
impact resistant, non-flammable, thaw
and frost resistant and insensitive
to UV rays. It is mould resistant and
scratch resistant too, meaning the
strong, clean lines of Lapitec can be
expected to last.
Samples of Lapitec and further information
on this new and innovative product, can be
seen at Granite Benchtops new showroom,
on the corner of Molesworth and High
Streets, in New Plymouth.

WHY NOT ALL
MEDICAL INSURANCE IS EQUAL
We’ve been touched by several articles in the media about New Zealanders who are fundraising for their
lives – literally. Many critically ill patients are not able to access the drugs they need to give them the best
chance of survival, which is forcing them to fund the cost themselves. Having medical insurance can help
protect you from the stress of funding private care, however having the right policy is vital.
One story in particular which featured
in the NZ Herald recently, really touched
us. It was about 24 year old Sally Xu
who is battling against an aggressive
form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and is
trying to raise $150,000 for a new cancer
drug. Unfortunately PHARMAC (the NZ
agency that decides which medicines are
subsidised) does not fund this particular
drug here in New Zealand. So Sally’s last
chance for survival is to fund the cost of
the drug herself.
While this is a heart-breaking
situation for Sally and her family, it’s
also amazing that there is still hope at
all. As modern medicine continues to
advance at a rapid rate, more illnesses
will become treatable by medication in
future, you just need to be sure that you
can access it when you need it. In reality
the Government only has a limited
amount of funds available for drug
subsidies - they simply can’t afford to
fund each new drug which comes along.
While we can’t yet cure cancer before
it takes hold, we can help to ensure that
we are able to access the treatments
we need. One way we can do this, is by
having good medical insurance cover.
There are several medical insurance
policies available on the market which
include cover for non-PHARMAC drugs,
however you need to be aware that
when it comes to medical cover - not all
insurers are created equal. In fact, New
Zealand’s “largest” medical insurance
provider only allows for up to $10,000
towards non-PHARMAC cancer drugs.
In a case like Sally’s, that amount isn’t
going to go very far.
Please don’t let this be your story. If
you’re unsure of whether your medical
insurance covers you for non-PHARMAC
drugs (or to what amount) then please
ask us and we’ll find out for you. Also if
you don’t have medical insurance and
would like to see how inexpensive it can
be, get in touch!
We are so moved by Sally’s story
that we’ve given a little to help her to
continue her fight. If you’d like to help
Sally, please go www.givealittle.co.nz/

I like how Moturoa has evolved into
almost a women’s side, and a men’s

the most shops.
Though just like every married

maybe that’s how Tim got this side of

Also on the ‘women’s side’ there’s
the bank, of course, and the recently

The new owners have rebranded as
an independent pharmacy and the
sliding front door has been replaced
making it so much easier to open

With cosmetic lines, fragrant soaps,
vitamins and essential summer items

Between Ngamotu Beach and the ‘end’
of the Coastal Walkway, is Breakwater
Bay - a hub of seaside businesses.
The New Plymouth Sportfishing and Underwater Club, and
Gusto restaurant, share similar stunning views across the
harbour. While Gusto is open to the casual diner daily from
10am (9am in the weekends) until late, the Sportfishing
Club can be hired out for events, and is also home to
Marlin’s Cafe, which is open from 4-8.30pm Thursday Sundays.
Once you’ve got the important issue of refreshments
sorted, you can stroll to the end of the Lee Breakwater and
get some fabulous views of the bay and mountain. Chat to
the numerous fishermen and boaties, maybe hire a kayak or
pedal boat, or take a trip with Chaddy’s Charters. You might
be inspired to have a go at fishing yourself. Great news - you
can get everything you need right in Breakwater Bay at
Taranaki Hunting & Fishing. You could also arm yourself
with all the gear needed to hunt some wildlife - just in case.
Lost?
No worries, there’s the big sign at the end of the Coastal
Walkway to get you back on track - just don’t take it too
literally - it is art after all.

DIY TRAV EL GUY
Absolutely Flabulous
Every so often Shelley gets what she calls brainwaves. I think of them more as
annoying potholes in the highway of life. “We should eat more healthy foods,”
she’ll announce as I’m chomping on a steak, cheese and bacon pie.
The next few weeks are always hard.
Shelley will send me to the shop for
roughage or some sugar-free, salt-free,
fat-free, gluten-free, meat-free, tastefree sausages and I’ll only have the
short two minute drive home to down
a pie then clean up the flaky mess from
the front of my shirt, from the driver’s
seat, from the floor and, most difficult
of all, from all the nooks and crannies
of the centre console (I tend to be a
somewhat chaotic eater). If I’m really
onto it, I’ll remember to brush my teeth
with my tongue so she can’t see bits of
steak and kidney stuck between them.
Next it will be something like, “We
should clean out our wardrobes”. By
this she means it’s time I threw out
the faded, droopy tee-shirt I’ve been
wearing for the past ten years or the
flowery Hawaiian shirt with the Lion
Red logo I won at pool. I never take any
notice of her clean-out brainwaves so
eventually the offensive clothing
simply vanishes.
“Have you seen my Hawaiian shirt?”
I’ll ask.
“You haven’t lost it have you? You loved
that shirt. What a pity.”
So it was with some trepidation that
I recently agreed, after another Shelley
brainwave, to exercise as a couplesome.
Shelley was reading a book titled All the
horrible and unfortunate things that
will go wrong with your body when you
get old and floppy. The book convinced
her that we should fix things now before
they go wrong in the future.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t
touch it,” I said as I flexed
her a bicep but Shelley
was unimpressed.
“We’ll start off slowly with stretching
exercises,” she said, “but first we need to
learn to breathe.”
It seems I’ve been breathing wrong
my whole life. It’s a miracle I haven’t
died of hypoxia while concentrating
on sex or food or music. Apparently,
proper breathing involves pushing your
stomach in and out rather than puffing
out your chest. It doesn’t look manly
and it doesn’t come naturally.
Next I had to stretch parts of my

anatomy that haven’t stretched in
many a long year. The first exercise
involved strengthening our pelvic floors
(something I didn’t know I possessed and
which seemed to be working fine despite
my ignorance). This entailed squatting,
butts only inches off the floor, then deep
breathing through our stomachs while
counting to sixty.
I found firstly, that I can’t squat,
breathe, and count simultaneously
and secondly, that my knees no longer
work. So while Shelley squats, breathes
and stretches her way to pelvic floor
perfection, I lie on my back, drag my
knees up around my ears and huff
and puff like some demented birthing
instructor. Any vestiges of manliness
have left the building.
Not only do my knees not work but
my hamstrings aren’t long enough,
my hips don’t rotate, my abs
resemble more a beer barrel than a
six-pack and my bum muscles are
in dire need of strengthening. We
can never have strong enough bum
muscles, can we?
“This is fun,” said Shelley, “and
next week we’ll start the real
exercises.”
I’m desperate. Shelley needs a
new brainwave. I’d appreciate if
someone emailed her an article
extolling the benefits of belching
or a scientific report that lists the
virtues of beer and meat pies and
their positive influence on a

THE ACCOUNTING ROOM
Business growth is a sure sign you’re doing something right. It’s something Anthony
Vincent and Ian Nicholas of The Accounting Room work on with their clients. Their own
business has continued to grow over the past fifteen years, with fifteen people currently
employed there. “We’ve grown along with our clients.” comments Anthony. Now the
company has rebranded from Everest Vincent to The Accounting Room. Words Irena Brooks
“People would confuse our company
with McDonald Everest, the insurance
brokers,” Anthony comments.
The new name conveys what the
company does and sets it up for further
growth, no matter who is at the helm.
Their striking building is the old Boon
Bros. structure on the corner of Gill and
Gover Sts.
“So many of our clients comment
that they used to work in this building,”
says Anthony of the offices constructed
in 1926.
ACCOUNTING PEOPLE UNDERSTAND
Ian and Anthony believe that what sets
them apart from other accountancy
firms is their approachability, availability
and plain English explanations of
accounting terms.
“People don’t have to wait weeks
on end to see us. We also schedule
timeframes for people to get their endof-year accounts in to us to speed up
turn around time. We team our clients
up with one of our people so they have
a chance to really understand their
business and develop a good working
relationship. And we prepare financial
statements our clients can read and
understand.
“We’re upfront with our fees so people
know what they are dealing with and we
also recommend appropriate accounting
software that is the best fit for use in
their business and help get it installed,”
says Ian.
“Sometimes clients can be
apprehensive about upgrading their
technology but after a month or two we
often get really positive comments back
about how awesome it is,” he adds.
FROM TAX TO BUSINESS ADVICE
The Accounting Room has a large
commercial client base, business
professionals, retail, rentals, farms and
the oil industry.
In addition to the bread-and-butter
accounting work, like the preparation of
financial returns, annual reports, GST
and tax returns, The Accounting Room
provides business advice to its clients.
“Some clients just want to know how
much tax to pay and that’s it, while
other clients want to find out if there
are any improvements they can make to
their business,” says Anthony.
Budgets, cashflows and financials are
all part of that as people seek to expand
their businesses, or maybe take on a
new business or look to sell off part of
their existing business.
“The great thing is you don’t know
what sort of calls you’re going to get
each day,” says Anthony.
IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY
Being business owners themselves,
means Anthony and Ian often face
similar situations as their clients.
Retaining good staff and keeping pace
with technology are a couple of areas
they know they have done well with.
“A flexible working environment
ensures staff longevity,” Anthony states,
with several of their staff members
having worked at the company since the
early days.
Part of that flexibility includes
working from home from time to time,
which means embracing technology and
the ability to work remotely.
Plus increasing cloud services makes
remote access even easier.
All of the team also have two
computer screens which greatly
increases efficiency.
The Accounting Room was one of
the first businesses to sign up to
ultrafast broadband when it arrived in
New Plymouth a couple of years ago.
“We’re always looking at improving
our technology,” says Ian.
“The accounting profession has
come a long way from twenty years
ago when you’d have five or six people
in an office sharing one computer,”
Anthony observes.
They have also strived to ensure
a comfortable working environment,
with sliding glass doors available in the
open plan areas so staff can make their
own “office” when they need complete
concentration or privacy is required.
Each sliding door has been given
a sand-blasted art effect, depicting
a local scene, like our mountain, Te
Rewa Rewa bridge, the Wind Wand,
or Paritutu.
It’s a good blend of contemporary
with the nearly century-old features
of the building.
Now that they have changed to
“The Accounting Room” Anthony and
Ian can offer clients a perspective on
rebranding too!

SPORTS EVENTS
TARANAKI Cycle Challenge
The decision last year to combine Taranaki’s two around the mountain bike rides has
resulted in a single strong event, which is already seeing growth.
“We had over 1100 participants last
year and we’re expecting even more
this time round,” says organiser,
Selwyn Brown.
The Taranaki Velodrome Committee
receives funding from the event for
ongoing maintenance and running
costs of the Taranaki Cycle Park at
Bell Block.”
Other beneficiaries are the Taranaki
Kids Sports trust, which donates
funding received from the event to
local kids to realise their sporting
dreams, and CanTeen.
Timed for Saturday, 24th January
2015, training for the 150km ride, starts
now for most entrants.
An elite men’s race for registered
national riders is again being
sponsored by AWE, with entrants
expected to come from all over the
country.
The bulk of entrants however will
be everyday people who want to tick
off this iconic event from their ‘bucket
list’ or better their time from previous
years.
Solo entries, relay teams and a
two-person relay, offer riders of every
level a chance to participate. The ECL
Accumulator, where one rider starts
the race and collects another rider
from his or her team, at each relay
transition is a great way for cyclists
of varying abilities to take part. “It is a
perfect option for businesses who want
to do some team building,” says Brown.
Every entrant gets a great starter
pack, along with a food and drink
voucher to use at the completion of
the ride. A live band entertains all
afternoon leading up to Prize Giving.
The prizes at this event have always
been an attraction, and this year there
are two trips for two, to Hawaii, thanks
to Hawaiian Airlines and Boutique
Mondo Travel.
There’s also a scooter from Energy
Honda, new Trek bikes, a LG G3
smart phone and a 50” Panasonic
LCD television, from Harvey Norman,
a weekend escape to Picton, Bolle
sunglasses and a season ski pass at
Mt Ruapehu to be won.

Taranaki Steelformers Around the Mountain Relay
Being held over the 7th and 8th of November, Events Taranaki spokesperson, Selwyn Brown,
is expecting a field of over 2000 walkers and runners for the annual Taranaki Steelformers
Around the Mountain Relay.
This year there are two new options
for budding ultra-distance runners.
“We’re including a solo 50 mile race
this year, and also a 100 mile twoperson relay, with each person doing
50 miles of the course.”
But the bulk of competitors will
comprise teams of between 10 and up
to 16 members completing the 152km
course. There are 21 legs between
3 and 11km, and teams must have
a minimum of 10 members with a
maximum of 16.
“It’s a fantastic team building event,”
says Selwyn, of the Around the
Mountain Relay.
It starts from the TSB Stadium on
Friday night and will culminate with
a prize-giving on Saturday November
8th 2014 at 6.30pm.
There are several prizes up for grabs,
including trophies to the first Business
House and non-Business House teams
in the Walker, Composite and Runners
category, plus over $50,000 worth of
spot prizes.
The Taranaki Steelformers 100 mile
solo event generally attracts a dozen
or so hard-core ultra-distance runners
who usually complete the course in
15-16 hours. There’s a $1000 prize
to the first male and female home
(conditions apply).
An inter-secondary school trophy
is also up for grabs, sponsored by
Sport Taranaki. Last year it was won
by Feilding High School, and Selwyn
is keen to see a Taranaki school take
back the title this year.
Spectators should start gathering at
the TSB Stadium around 11.15am on
Saturday to watch the first runners
team cross the finish line, with other
teams and solo runners expected
WELLS New Plymouth HALF 2015
On Saturday 7th February 2015 the WELLS New Plymouth
Half will be based at New Plymouth’s Port Taranaki.
Consisting of a 2km swim, 90km bike and 21km run, the
course will embrace the Harbour, Surf Highway 45 and our
world-famous Coastal Walkway.
“It’s an honest course,” says organizer,
Selwyn Brown. “It’s more testing than
the Tauranga course, which is flat and
a bit of a draft-fest.”
A business house challenge in
the relay section will see local firms
putting their best athletes forward.
This is the fifth year for the event
and Selwyn has instigated several
options for people wanting to take
part, but not up to doing the Half
Ironman distance.
The Daily News sprint category
will encompass a 750m swim, 20km
bike ride and 5km run for teams and
individuals. There’s also the Wells
Quarter event, comprising a 500m
swim, 20km bike and 5km run for
teams.
The Frontrunner Half Marathon will
be run on the same day, starting just
before the first waves of swimmers
begin. Runners and walkers will
complete three laps of the 7km lap
Half Ironman circuit via Bayly Rd,
Whiteley St, Hine St and the Coastal
Walkway. This will give spectators at
the beach the chance to see athletes
regularly throughout the event.
This year the Half Marathon
distance can also be done by relay
teams of three runners, or three
walkers, with each team member
doing a lap each, with male and
female relay teams.
There is also a 7km run/walk option,
which is just one lap of the course.
The big screen will be operating at
the start/finish line, capturing the
all-day action, so bring the family
down to the beach and be part of a
fantastic day.

some pretty awesome efforts over the
years,” says Selwyn.
SPLASH ‘N’ DASH
SUMMER SERIES
This summer, Events
Taranaki are holding a 6 race
series of Splash N Dash races
through the summer starting
on Wednesday 26th Nov
2014 and finishing on 25th
February 2015.
The solo Splash N Dash distance is
500m swim + 2km run, or you can opt
for the longer distance of a 1km swim
with 4km run. We are also planning
a shorter distance, and are looking at
starting groups closer together, which
will condense the night and allow an
earlier prize giving.
There is also a Business House

There’s never been a
better time to pay online…
I can’t think of too many reasons why you wouldn’t consider embracing
technology and using internet banking for both personal and business
use – unless of course you are one of the minority who doesn’t have
access to a smartphone, computer device, internet, or bank account!
Statistics suggest New Zealand will
have 90% smartphone and 78% tablet
ownership by 2018. More than 72% of
us have already entered our financial
information on line to buy or pay for
something. Age has been no barrier
so far. So the only real show stopper
could be limited or no internet access in
remote areas.
It should be no surprise to learn that
the cheque book is in its last years of
life and our NZ Postal delivery service
is also facing change. Not only will
internet banking become the normal,
but much of our communication and
documentation will be electronic,
available to share and access from
almost anywhere.
New Zealand has always led the
way in banking technology with very
sophisticated security systems. Now
in the era of collaboration, we see
the banking sector partnering with
software and service providers to offer
very smart ways of doing business.
Some of the questions that you as a
business owner may want to think
about:
• Are you using internet banking to
make payments and receive deposits?
• Are you using the internet banking
capability fully in your business?
• Are you using cloud/online capable
accounting and payroll software?
• Does your accounting software have
the ability to integrate with other
software required in your business,
ie workflow, job costing, customer
database?
• Are you using technology to connect
to your customers & suppliers?
• Are you filing your GST, FBT and PAYE
electronically with IRD?
• Are you making it easy for your
customers to do business with you?
What benefits will internet banking
and technology create for your
business?

processes & creating efficiencies

CHANGES AT THE IRD –
MAKING TAX PAYMENTS
Even the IRD are getting on board
promoting the payment of tax
obligations online. From 1 October
you’ll need to ensure Inland Revenue
receives your cheque payment on or
before the due date to avoid penalties
and interest.
Paying on time
Its important that your payment and
return reaches Inland Revenue on or
before the due date to avoid penalties
and interest. This means you’ll no
longer be able to post cheques on the
due date. You can however, make
payments online up to and including
the due date – but please check with
your bank regarding processing times of
payments if paying on the due date. We
recommend you pay using the “pay tax”
function provided by most New Zealand
banks. To make an online payment or

Taranaki
One of New Zealand’s largest investment advisory and management firms, Craigs Investment
Partners (CIP), continues to develop its operation in New Plymouth. To service clients more
effectively the business has decided to move to a new, more modern location.
New Plymouth branch started in 1984
when Michael Regan joined his father
Arthur’s firm (Arthur Regan & Co),
prior to becoming a franchise office
under the Craig & Co brand in 1996. In
2001 Craig & Co developed into ABN
AMRO Craigs and later into Craigs
Investment Partners. Today, the branch
has five Investment Advisers and three
support staff.
Michael Regan, Investment Adviser
highlights, “The changes to our
business over the last 30 years have
been dramatic. When we started we

service. Private Wealth management
is now our core business. We offer
a comprehensive range of services
to suit a wide range of clients,
including investment advice, portfolio
management, sharebroking, fixed
interest and retirement services.
We use these services to develop
tailored investment solutions for
creating, growing and sustaining our
clients’ wealth”.
“The environment in which we
operate has also evolved with
additional regulation and compliance
requirements, and this shapes our
business practise continuously,”
Michael adds.
The office opens for business on
6 October from 9 Young Street, New
Plymouth.
“This is an exciting next step for our
branch. We look forward to moving into
the new building that can service our
growth for years to come and provide
an inviting environment for hosting
and client interaction. The cornerstone
of our firm is building long-term
relationships with our clients and we
remain committed to New Plymouth
and the clients we service,” Investment
Adviser Colin Clarke says.
The New Plymouth branch is
part of the wider network of Craigs

Urban retro chic, monochromatic tones,

There are no rules, no obvious ‘must haves’ - just a passion
for colour, from pretty pastel tones to outrageously fun
electric hues verging on ‘pass-me-some-shades’ neon. And
just to prove it’s not all about colour, there’s plenty of
monochromatic black and white looks too.
“This season, spring fashion is classier, more dressy and
less casual than it has been in previous years,” says Laura
Crombie, of boutique New Plymouth clothing store, Katwalk.
“There’s more tailoring, skirt lengths are longer and
material is more structured and textured.”
In previous years, fashion for the warmer months has
presented a multitude of short skirts. This year there are
more longer options, including pencil skirts to the knee,
often teamed with a flirty cropped top that offers a hint
of midriff.
Skirts out-number dresses, though the maxi dress is still a
favourite this year.
“There are amazing fabrics,” Laura continues. “We have a
couple of dresses coming made from wetsuit material. It’s
all about shape and structure. The feeling this season kind
of reminds me of Melbourne Cup Day.”
In contrast to the tailored glamorous look is the Bohemian
festival look - perfect for music festivals, ideal for WOMAD.
A splash of sixties and a dash of nineties is this season’s
perfect cocktail, with head-dresses, metallic heels or boots,
and leather wooden wedges mixing it with mesh layered
over black or a bolder neon, and iridescence formed with a
holographic dress or skirt.
If you’re a hippy at heart, you can wear the fringe with
pride this season, either with a statement fringed poncho, or
a more subtle handbag.
Layering is another feature, with beautiful lace and sheer
tops, layered over other tops or just over lingerie.
Looking to keep it simple? Full skirts with voluminous
silhouettes add glamour, geometric prints abound, or a
simple block or pastel colour will tantalise the tastes.
The classic white blouse is ever popular, but reinterpreted
with neckline detailing and embellishments creating a new
twist on the basic essential. Pair with a power suit, and you
will have a revitalised office wardrobe. Your suit can range
from bold prints, to subtle pastels, wool to leather, the wide
range of fabrics available make it easy to create
your statement.
The floral print is still popular, either as an edgy bold
pattern, or in subtle pastel chiffon. Flowers feature on full
dresses, high waisted shorts, or beach attire.
For the discerning fashionista, jumpsuits & pantsuits are
making a comeback.
“They are a true fashion statement piece,” reckons Paul
Scouller of Kudos.
“Sports Luxe fabrics feature through most ranges in some
shape or form. The sports luxe look has come from the
popularity of the sports fabrications within the marketplace.
These garments offer styling from fitted dresses, which

A touch of Hollywood glamour in this

are coming in longer - in some cases to, or past, the knee.
Often they have mesh inserts or mesh detailing within the
garments, creating layering or mixing fabrics & textures for
a chic look.
“There’s a little of that old Hollywood Glam this season
too,” says Paul.
“Full A-Line Skirts in luxe fabrics with matching structured full tops that also A-line off the waist, are a real
trend.”
He has also noticed a return of floral prints, from micro
to large floral prints - and in bright colours. “That’s what
summer is about - celebrating colour.”
Janet Wheeler of Janet’s Fashions loves that colour is so
strong this season.
“It’s not only a pick-me-up for the soul, but it really
adds to your look when you get a colour that suits your
complexion, or sets off the colour of a person’s eyes or hair.”
She too has noticed an increase in dress and skirt lengths.
“Anything goes really - it’s all in how a person wears it.”
With unpredictable Taranaki weather, it’s always handy
to have a selection of light jackets, shrugs or cardigans that
go well with dresses, skirts, and pants for those special
occasions, work dos or summer parties.Kimono throws are
another option, ranging in length from hips, to knees to full
length, they add colour and texture, while providing a bit
of warm of breezy days, and skin protection on relentlessly
sunny ones. They’re also great for disguising any body bits
that aren’t quite ‘summer-ready’!
Repertoire is also catering to the fashionable woman who
likes to keep warm and dry when spring weather takes a
turn for the worse, with their Tropic Trench available in
four colours, to add warmth and create a layered look.

“Perforated fabrics are hugely important this summer.
The mesh and layered look channels the sport luxe trend
which is trending right through to accessories, and one of
the strongest trends this year,” says Repertoire’s Meghan
Maher.
“Clashing strong tribal prints have had a huge comeback
on the catwalk internationally, influenced from African
hot savannah prints to the tropical Amazon tribal prints,”
she adds.
“White has made a comeback and is the most important
colour for this season. Strong white blocking against
vibrant colours is a huge look and is being picked up by
magazines nationally in their fashion spreads. If you are
not comfortable wearing it, white accessories and shoes
are just as important.”
For a more casual approach, try a luxe sweatshirt with
bold splashy patterns and colours, or black and white
asymmetrical contrast.
Athleticism is also key this season, using baseball
caps, tennis-inspired dresses and jackets - wear them
separately or together for an urban casual approach.
The team at Seasons have also noticed the luxe athletic
style this year offering comfortable style that will help
you get moving and look good while doing it!
90’s nostalgia is big, with hi waist Wrangler jeans or
shorts worn with a cropped tee.
“Sheer fabrics, lace, stripes and big prints with attitude
are hot this season,” says Candace Smith.
With the 60s and 90s influencing today’s fashions,
find yourself some truly authentic touches at recycled
clothing shops. The Dressing Room on Liardet St is
a ‘once-loved’ clothing boutique selling upmarket and

FOOTWEAR
There’s plenty of colour in this season’s
shoes, from subtle sorbets to bright
monochromatic styles in shades of
lime, watermelon and peach.
Floral patterns team beautifully with cool white dresses
and pants, giving that pop of colour that is an essential
spring thing.
Feet will breathe a sigh of relief with the trend to flats,
kitten and middy heels, often with ankle straps.
“Use your footwear to speak volumes about your
outfit and be comfortable in the wedge of Kloser or
rock the one of the season’s biggest trends, the loafer,”
says Robyn Marshall of Footloose. “There’s loud prints,
metallic leathers, perfect pinks and monochrome mixes it is all about colour this summer.”
“Whatever you choose, Footloose ensures that you
will make a statement and be fabulous and fun in our
summer footwear!”
For the younger set, pretty dresses and tops can be
teamed with Dr Martens or Vans, while the humble
mule has had a youthful makeover and you can’t go
past a comfy pair of skate shoes to match your attire.

Spring and Summer is going back... right
back!!! “ according to Paul from Kudos.
“Think resort casual look from the 70s with retro Hawaiian
prints ... but NOT those ghastly Hawaiian shirts worn
around in the 80s,” he hastens to add. “These are retro
postcard style prints and you’ll see them in shirting, chinos,
shorts, tees & even footwear. If these prints scare you, opt
for a shirt with subtle Hawaiian print detailing inside
collars or cuffs etc.”
There will be washed-out pastels in shirting and in
chinos for that relaxed weekend look, which is now
acceptable for right through the week. Un-ironed shirts in
washed-out breathable cotton fabrics teamed with chinos,
shorts or denim and a slip-on loafer is a key look.
Chinos are still strong in pants & shorts but denim is

rolled-up cuff teamed with a cool printed tee & canvas

This summer’s male will have that ‘rough n ready’
to go look but with a chic casual resort influence.

Plastic Jeans?
Musician Pharrell Williams has worked with Dutch
fashion brand G-Star Raw to create a denim collection
made from waste plastic scooped up from the ocean.
G-Star RAW made the garments in the RAW for the Ocean
collection from materials created by Bionic Yarn, which
transforms recycled plastic into textiles.
“Working with G-Star was an obvious choice, because they
have a legacy of pushing the boundaries of fashion and
denim forward,” said Williams, Bionic Yarn’s creative director.
“Bionic Yarn is a company built around performance, and
denim is the perfect category to show the world what Bionic
Yarn can do. Everyone has jeans in their closet,” he said.
Collections for men and women include jeans, shirts,
coats, jumpsuits and hats all made from the recycled
denim. Some of the garments are patterned with lightercoloured designs across the fabric.
Non-denim sweatshirts and hoodies are printed with
messages explaining the idea, as well as other positive
slogans.
An illustrated squid has been used as the motif for the
range and features on some of the items.
As well as the new range, G-Star RAW is also integrating
the textiles into garments from its existing lines. The
collection is now available online.
New Plymouth store Kudos, will have its first shipment of
G-Star products arriving in November, with jeans plus mens
and women’s fashion. ••

Meet the LIVE Styling Team
A boxing champ, the New Zealand ‘face’ of an international cosmetics brand, a photographer recently returned
from London and a local hairdresser all combined to bring you this issue’s fashion photo shoot.
After several weeks of sunny balmy
weather, it came as no surprise when
the day we’d chosen for our fashion
shoot dawned cold, blustery and pelting
with rain!
Luckily, once Michelle Mowat and
Annalee Muggeridge had finished with
our models’ hair and make-up, the rain
had stopped.
We arrived at Tupare with a variety of
clothes and shoes from local retailers
and Rochelle (the gardener) let us in
to ‘John’s room’ in the basement of the
fabulous Chapman-Taylor house on the
grounds. This was the changing room for
our two models, Kirsty Honeyfield and
Vita Hansen, during the next few hours.
Laura Crombie, or ‘Champ’ as she was
known for the day after winning her
boxing match a couple of nights earlier
at Fight for Life, was the organiser
and stylist. She owns local retail store
Katwalk, and sorted the looks for each
model while working with photographer
Aimee Kelly to get the right background,
look and angle.
Make-up artist, Annalee Muggeridge,
is fast forging a name for herself as a
talented make-up artist through her
Facebook page “MakeUp with Annalee”.
She’d just found out she had won a
national competition to be ‘the New
Zealand face’ of Collections Cosmetics,
so we were all buzzing with her success
(see story below).
Photographer, Aimee Kelly, arrived
back in Taranaki three weeks earlier,
after working at fashion internet site
Net-a-Porter for the previous two years.
She’s just set up her own photography
business in Taranaki, specialising in
e-commerce (product shots for people’s
websites), fashion, weddings and
portraits.
Hairdresser Michelle Mowat styled the
models’ hair for each outfit, changing
it up from Hollywood glam to 50s
rock’n’roll.
Our two models were terrific to work
with - Kirsty a seasoned pro and Vita on
her first time doing a shoot.
After photographing six outfits, we
headed to new eatery, Deluxe Diner, to
shoot some 50s-style dresses from local
label, Mavis & Bob.
Our thanks to the owners, staff and
customers for working around us on a
busy Sunday afternoon. Thanks too to
the weather gods who held off with the
rain until we’d finished!
New face of cosmetics line
Annalee Muggeridge is about to see her face everywhere. She has just won a competition in
Cleo magazine to be the New Zealand face of Collections Cosmetics.
She was at work doing make-up for
her friend Michelle Mowat when the
call came through.
“I was expecting it to be along the lines
of ‘thanks very much, but you haven’t
won’ and I’d already prepared myself
that hey, I’d made the ten finalists
out of 600 girls who had entered the
competition, and that was amazing
in itself. Then they said, ‘we’ve got
some amazing news and you’re our
winner!’ I kind of just screamed then,
and asked if they were serious. I even
broke down crying. These sorts of things
don’t happen to me. It was kind of like
winning Lotto!”
As part of her prize she won a trip
to Auckland to get a makeover and

BRISTOWE
Taranaki’s 16 year-old International Model
Words Irena Brooks Photo peru I bebe inca by Bird and Knoll
64 I LIVE MAGAZINE I SPRING 2014
At the beginning of this year, 15
year-old Bell Block youngster, Eden
Bristowe, made the decision to leave
school and begin her career as an
international model.
She packed her bags and travelled to
Sydney where she took up residence
in her first flat. Six months later she
had featured in dozens of campaigns
and she’s now on the cover of the
current edition of Fashion Quarterly.
During September and October,
Eden will be in the three fashion
capitals of Europe - Paris, London and
Milan, where she graces the catwalk
at their respective Fashion Weeks.
With her first show in London, the
now 16-year-old caused a stir when
she opened for British designer,
Vivienne Westwood.
Andrea Plowright, the owner of
Eden Bristowe’s agency, 62 Models and

twelve years with the company that
a model from the agency had walked

It all started for
Eden on a trip to
Sydney to see her
dad last year.
That evening Kerry and Eden looked
up the 62 Models website and filled in
an application form. Kerry took a plain
photo of Eden without make-up, as
requested, and sent it off.
The next day they had an email
stating the agency liked Eden’s look
and asking if they were planning on
making a trip to Auckland in the near
future, as they would like her to call in
to the agency.
Eden and her mum traveled up soon
after and met the team there. Kerry
discovered she used to go to school
with one of the ‘bookers’ which helped
mother and daughter both feel more
at ease. Eden signed with the agency,

She was having to take a few days
off school to do various modelling
assignments, and at the beginning of
this year Kerry and Eden had a chat
with the school about Eden’s options.
“The school was very supportive,”
remembers Kerry.
In February of this year, Eden signed
with Australian agency Chic through
her connections with 62 Models. She
left NPGHS and was soon on a plane
to Sydney, where continued school

by correspondence in between her
modelling assignments.
“We took a lot of guidance from the
agency,” says Kerry. “They have really
looked after her.” Including finding a
suitable place for Eden to live.
Eden has had to grow up fast. She’s
had to learn how to cook a decent
meal - her livelihood depends on her
being able to properly nourish and
care for her body, while her face can’t
afford to have break-outs.
“We pointed out to her that she
hasn’t left school for nothing. She
needs to make this work,” Kerry
emphasises.
Consequently, chicken salad has
become Eden’s ‘go-to’ meal.
“It’s so easy to make and doesn’t
take long,” says Eden.
She doesn’t have her driver’s
license yet (she only became eligible
to get her learner’s license in August),
so she has become adept at using
public transport to get to her various
assignments. The running around
and impromptu sprints to catch
buses and trains, helps keep her in
shape, though she also schedules in
time for plenty of exercise.
Her Kiwi work ethic has held her
in good stead and she is recognised
for being prompt and getting on with
things, no matter what the conditions
are like.
This includes working through
what is colloquially known as
Fatima’s Revenge while doing the
Fashion Quarterly shoot in Marrakech
for a week during June. She also
had to sit astride a camel and the
temperatures sat well into the 30s.
The resulting photos had Eden
starring in a 12 page feature, as well
as getting the cover shot of Fashion
Quarterly’s Spring 2014 issue.
“Everyone loves her because she’s
so polite and professional,” says Kerry.
“People often describe her as ‘a breath
of fresh air’.
“People love New Zealand and
Aussie girls,” reckons Eden, “because
we’re humble.”
Eden is loving the work so far
and is learning a range of new
things about the industry. Last
November she was selected to be a
representative for the Elite Model
Look in China, which is essentially, a
worldwide model competition. The
winners get contracts with Elite
Model Management.
Though Eden didn’t place at the
event, she gained a lot of exposure
and also learnt how to walk the
runway.

She has since signed with Elite
Worldwide and Society of New York
modelling agencies.
Bird & Knoll, a trans-Tasman
business specialising in luxurious
oversized cashmere-blend scarves,
chose Eden as their ‘muse’ and it is
her you see in all their advertising.
You’ll also see Eden’s image at
Glassons and Wild Pair.
She was back in New Zealand in
September for New Zealand Fashion
week, where she was one of the most
sought-after models, often booked
back-to-back for the various shows.
Prior to that she worked two weeks
solid back in Sydney.
Her favourite assignments are
generally doing fashion shows.
“The atmosphere of it all, the models
and make-up artists and hair stylists.
It’s always a really good vibe.”
With fashion shoots, “you’re usually
either really hot or really cold,” Eden
confides, as winter fashions are shot
during the preceding summer, and
summer bikinis and the like are
shot in the depths of winter. Even
studio shots are usually baking hot or
shiveringly cold.
Sometimes Eden admits she doesn’t
recognise herself when given different
looks by the hair and make-up people.
“They change the structure of my
face with the way they apply the
make-up and do my hair.”
The former tomboy never thought
she’d be a model.
“I thought probably a beautician.”
She admits she misses her friends
but keeps in touch via Facebook,
Instagram and Skype.
“They are grounding and so
supportive,” says Kerry. “They just
treat her the same as they always
have.”
Eden admits it was a bit scary
when she first arrived to live in
Australia.
“I didn’t know anyone, or where
anything was. I was a bit lonely to
begin with. But the more jobs I did,
the more people I got to know and
that made it a lot easier.”
Andrea Plowright of 62 Models
comments that it helps having a
super supportive family.
Once Eden has finished her current
assignments, she’s planning on
coming home for Christmas, and
then she’ll likely go to live in London
or Milan.
Pretty heady stuff for a 16 year-old

But something she’s fast getting
used to. ••

Outstanding Service at Stratford Pharmacy
Omotenashi. It’s a Japanese word
that broadly speaking means
‘service’ - but not just ordinary
service. It’s more about anticipating a
customer’s needs and it is thoroughly
embodied at the Shiseido counter of
Moss Rocard & Smith Pharmacy on
Broadway in Stratford.
Chris Jordan and Sonya Joyce live
‘omotenashi’ with their knowledge of
the Shiseido product range, and the
value and thoughtfulness they give to
their clients.
Like free half-hour facials every two
weeks. Truly!
With regular Shiseido clients who
buy a jar of the Shiseido facial massage
cream ($91), Chris and Sonya name
their, jar, keep it at the store, and give
them a free facial massage with it
every two weeks.
“It’s a great way to repay customer
loyalty,” says Chris, pointing out that it
also ensures customers are getting the
most benefit from using the range by
having a regular facial massage.
70 I LIVE MAGAZINE I SPRING 2014
“Shiseido products contain
ingredients that are as close to skin’s
natural properties as possible,” Chris
adds. “This means we have very few
people who get any sort of reaction to
the range.”
That range encompasses skin care
and make up.
The latest product from the Shiseido
range is Ultimune. This power infusing
concentrate goes beyond current skin
concerns by giving skin the strength to
fight against all kinds of damage on its
own. The result is smooth, supple skin,
that is trouble-resistant, with improved
firmness and resilience, making
wrinkles less visible.
“Ultimune has been 20 years in the
making,” says Chris. “No-one else has a
product like it.”
You don’t have to be using the full
Shiseido range to try it and experience
Ultimune’s benefits.
The omotenashi concept continues
with free skin care analysis, makeovers,
make-up lessons, or a private session
for women who would like to update
their look.
You can also book Chris and Sonya
to professionally do make-up for
weddings and special occasions. It
all takes place in their purpose-built
beauty room.
With free courier and postal service,
the pharmacy regularly sends parcels
out to customers throughout Taranaki
- including New Plymouth.
“We have many customers who
regularly come to Stratford and stop in
and see us,” says Chris. “Or others who
can’t get into town all the time, who
give us a call and let us know what
they would like, and we can just send
products out to them.”
If you are interested in trying the
new Ultimune product, or maybe
updating your make-up and look for

Happy Days
A long-held dream, with a combination of timing and the
right people, has resulted in the latest addition to New
Plymouth’s hospitality sector. Words Irena Brooks Photos Roger Richardson
Deluxe Diner is a 50s style American
diner, with generous portions and
affordable family prices. It’s already
proving to be a successful recipe
as the place is constantly bursting
at the seams since it opened on 1st
September.
With it’s cherry red furnishings and
formica tables, Deluxe Diner is straight
out of Happy Days. Eighteen neon
signs glow from the walls amongst
50s era posters and classic American
memorabilia.
Black and white tiles line the floors
with seating switched up from booths,
to tables to bar leaners and counter
seats.
It’s a relaxed family milk bar
atmosphere, somewhere people can
call into again and again, for breakfast,
lunch or dinner, a coffee, a snack or
a treat. What used to be called “a
hang out”.
Owners Bill and Chere Bailey and
Ralph Arnold worked flat-out for
eighteen 7-day weeks to get Deluxe
Diner ready for its grand opening.
“Diners were places people went to
when they couldn’t afford to go to
a restaurant,” says Bill. “They were
born around the time of the Great
Depression, when food service
operators offered low-cost, homecooked meals.”
Ralph Arnold is the head chef and
believes in cooking with love, using
the freshest and highest quality
ingredients.
With a host of niftily named
options to try in both the eats and
drinks departments, customers can
steadily work their way through the
breakfast (8am - 11.30am), lunch and
dinner (11.30am - 10pm) menus for
weeks without eating the same
thing twice.

a Deluxe English big breakfast.
For the super hungry, there’s the
Texas Steak Deluxe, with steak,
onion rings, bacon, eggs, potato rosti,
portabello mushrooms, tomato and
toast.
Just want something tasty to get you
through to lunchtime? Grab a Bacon
Butty for $8, or Biscuits and Gravy for
just $5.50.
Breakfasts start from 8am and with
bottomless coffee (Cuppa Joe) and free
WIFI, you can catch up on work or
your social life, as you take in fuel for
the day.
With its close proximity to town and
free parking, Deluxe Diner is also a
great stop for business meetings.
LUNCH AND DINNER
DAILY SPECIAL & CUP OF JOE
The most popular items are already
the burgers and American hot dogs.
The portions are American-influenced
as well. Lighter eaters can easily cut a
burger in two and share it. Same story
with the hot dogs, which are close
to a foot in length and cost $14 - $18
including fries and diner slaw salad.
Around $10 buys you a classic burger,
while $20 covers most deluxe options,
which come with a heap of tasty
golden fries.
There’s two vege burgers and gluten
free options as well.
But there are so many other meals
to try.
American sandwiches and toasties,
bagels and garlic bread, tacos and
nachos, pork ribs and chicken wings,
steak and salad.
Then there’s the Blue Plate special of
the day with a cup of joe, for $15.
This is the chef’s choice and changes
daily. It might consist of something like
Biscuits (they’re like hot scones) and
gravy with sausages and poached egg.
The ‘cup of joe’ was popular before
the advent of Espresso machines. Pay
$3.50 and you get a bottomless cup of
filtered coffee. Not as strong as Espresso,
many people prefer it as they don’t get
so wired.
DRINKS & SWEETS
On the Drinks and Sweets side of the
menu, you can really go nuts.
There’s the milkshakes in a range of
traditional flavours, floats made from
classic American sodas like A&W Root
Beer or Cherry Cola, and three different

Or you can tackle a VIP Shake,
with flavours like Nutella, Oreo
Cookie and Jelly Tip.
Desserts start with authentic
American fare like circular doughnuts,
Sweet Pie and cream, Chocolate
Brownie with hot fudge sauce and ice
cream or a classic New York cheesecake.
Ice Cream sundaes can have a
sprinkling of lollies added to them, like
marshmallows, pebbles, flake bars, or
crushed oreo cookies.
Maybe one of the Knickerbocker
Glory flavours is more your style.
These decadent sundaes include
Brownie Fudge - made of brownie,
chocolate fudge sauce, custard, vanilla
ice cream, chocolate chip sprinkles
and a chocolate flake. There’s also
Bananarama, Berry Blonde on Fire, Jelly
Tipp, Oreo Orbit and Peaches & Cream
to try.
For the over-18s, there is a bunch of
Alcoholic Milkshakes like the Deluxe
Money Shot, consisting of Stolen rum,
ice cream, chocolate brownie, vanilla
liqueur and topped with cream.
American beers, organic Taranaki beer,
spirits and liqueurs, cocktails and wine,
are all on offer.
Or you could just have an espresso
coffee, chai or cup of tea.
KIDS MEALS
At just $8, kids’ meals are truly
affordable for the average family. Pies,
chicken tenders, fish ‘n’ chips, mini hot
dogs and burgers, it’s all the stuff kids
love. A Kids Combo of meal, drink and
ice cream is $12, while you can pick
up a kids’ hot chocolate for just $2.50.
Fluffies are free.
WHAT ESLE?
It’s the attention to detail that really
gives Deluxe Diner the fabulous
fifties feeling it is infused with.
The booth seats are prefect for a
group of friends or family to gather
into. Staff are friendly and helpful,
while the service is quick. Music and
noise are at the right level - you can
enjoy a conversation across the table.
Deluxe Diner seems to appeal to a
range of people - grandparents, over

Looking Good
The first ever Look Good Feel Better Charity Auction and Dinner
was held on Saturday 13th September at the Devon Hotel. Look
Good Feel Better (LGFB) is a free service offered to women and
men undergoing treatment for cancer. They help restore and
enhance the appearance of cancer patients during and after
treatment by offering free pampering makeovers.
Rachael Lind who has been the LGFB
tutor for New Plymouth since 2009 has
been overwhelmed with the support
from the community regarding the
event. “Not only do people want to
raise awareness, but they clearly want
to help raise money to ensure this
great service continues. My goal
has always been to make sure as
many men and women facing cancer
treatment are aware of the work we
do and that they have the opportunity
to attend one of these uplifting
workshops. What started out as ‘a bit
of an auction’ to raise some money just
blossomed into this fabulous occasion.”
We would like to sincerely thank

ANDY BASSETT
THE ETERNAL
BLUE DANUBE
At the end of the introduction, the orchestra paused
for a second or two before gently, slowly moving into
the oh-so-familiar waltz. Above their heads, a beautiful
young woman glided across the stage, held aloft by her
tuxedoed partner, the folds of her blue dress swirling
a second or two behind her, her long, graceful arms
drawing arcs in the air. And then it occurred to me –
we had been in Vienna for over two days and, aside
from briefly crossing it on the train in from Prague, we
hadn’t actually seen the blue Danube.
We had another train to catch the following morning, so
were unlikely to see it again before we left. No matter - we
were heading to Budapest, which is also on the Danube. The
train was a high-speed one, clocking up 160kph on the way.
We reached Budapest in two and a half hours, in time for
lunch, though it took another hour to get to our hotel, half
of which was spent finding a legitimate taxi. By that time we
were seriously hungry. In Hungary.
It was Sunday afternoon, so we took it easy, sussing out
the cafes, bars and restaurants of our neighbourhood, on C
the Pest side of the river. The next day, we ventured into the
M
baking sun to cross the Danube via the Chain Bridge, into
Buda. Sustained by lemon sorbet, we climbed the steps upY
to the hilltop Fisherman’s Bastion, with spectacular viewsCM
across the city. We then braved the direct sun again, to reach
Budapest History Museum, housed in Buda Castle. It was MY
closed on Mondays.
CY
With an afternoon to kill, we switched to our Tuesday plan
CMY
- a cruise on the Danube. Pre-recorded voices related the
K
rather fraught history of Buda and Pest. We went upstream,
towards Margaret Island, which is notable for two things.
One, Margaret Island is its new name – only since the 13th
century, after St Margaret, who lived there in a convent and
died in 1270. Prior to that it was Nyulak Szigete, or Rabbit
Island. The other point of interest is Margaret Bridge, completed in 1876, which has a 165-degree kink in it, with an
extra branch turning off onto the island, due to its original
design rather presumptuously factoring in a planned extension to the island, not completed until twenty years after
the bridge was built. We spent ninety minutes on the island
itself, which is, in fact, pretty boring.
Two days later, we were on another train, only not highspeed. We faced a fifteen-hour journey to Bucharest. Almost
as soon as we left Budapest, the landscape turned yellow.
Fields of sunflowers stretched as far as we could see. By
mid-afternoon, to our right appeared a spectacular lake. We
were travelling along Romania’s southern border and on the
other side was Serbia, where we could make out some industrial port towns. Then suddenly the lake stopped. It had
been dammed – it wasn’t a lake at all, it was the Danube.
Arriving in Bucharest at 11:00pm, we walked to our hotel.
The next morning we had a quick look around, trying not to
be alarmed by an apparent invasion of military helicopters
flying extremely low over the city. That afternoon, a train
took us to the north-east, across more fields of sunflowers,
to Galati, where we were to attend a wedding. As we neared
the city, a huge body of water drew closer to us. It looked
like the Mississippi delta although, of course, it wasn’t. We
had crossed three countries, spending over twenty hours on
trains. And we were still on the blue Danube.
