Welcome from the President
Howdy from Big D!
Plans are under way to ensure the 2014 Texas Counseling Association (TCA) Professional
Growth Conference being held in Dallas on November 12-15 will be the best conference
ever! Our goals are to provide high quality professional development sessions, fabulous entertainment, professional
retreat and rejuvenation, and a professional family reunion.
Our conference theme, Many Voices, One Song, is intended to inspire reflection on our individual
uniqueness coming together through a united professional identity and to focus on the role of advocacy in the
profession. To support these goals, the Dallas Conference planning team has selected outstanding professional
development opportunities. On Friday, motivational speaker Mike Purcell will challenge us to set our sights on our
desired results, both personally and professionally, and to find the courage and motivation to change our habits,
attitudes, and thinking in order to reach our greatest potential in life. Additionally, more than 170 program
opportunities will be offered through Breakout Sessions, Poster Displays, Learning Institutes and Post-Conference
Workshops. Programs selected reflect the diversity of interest, practice, and talent that is the strength of our
profession, providing our members the opportunity to share their knowledge, research, and skills with you.
Dallas is a big city with a big pride that exemplifies the Texas spirit! And the
conference will embrace that attitude. The Opening Kick-Off Celebration on
Wednesday, November 12, will set the stage for an action packed conference
filled with entertainment, food, fellowship, and professional growth. Take
advantage of the entertainment planned throughout the conference and various
other social events that best address your professional and personal interests as
a time to enjoy the company of colleagues and friends.
The Sheraton Dallas Hotel has been selected as the host hotel and is
conveniently attached to the conference center. Register early and take

Changing Your Hat
Mike Purcell
Mike brings together an entertaining mixture of all of his talents as a speaker and humorist to deliver his
simplistic yet high impact message as a keynote or after dinner presenter. You will be highly entertained,
inspired and motivated as Mike takes you on a memorable journey through the use of humor, touching
stories, and perhaps even some of his original cowboy poetry. Mike’s audiences consistently say that they
enjoy his plain-spoken, common sense thoughts on the powerful transformation that can occur within
individuals and teams when you become willing to change your HAT (habits, attitudes and thinking).

A. TACES Presents: Development, Evaluation and
(When Needed) Remediation of LPC Interns
Topic:
Counselor Education & Supervision
Presenters: Marcella Stark
Keith Walker
Supervisors of LPC Interns serve an essential role in the
preparation of the next generation of counselors and function as
gatekeepers for the profession. Supervision involves more than
weekly “How’s it going?” chats. In this session, attendees will
learn methods for individual and triadic supervision, as well as
how to develop a supervision plan that includes supervision
objectives, assessment of intern skills, remediation interventions
when needed, and evaluation of supervision.
B. DSM-5 Update
Topic:
Mental Health Counseling
Assessment & Testing
Presenter: Casey Barrio Minton
As we settle into life with the DSM-5, professional counselors
need to update diagnostic knowledge and consider implications
for practice. This presentation will include an overview of the
most salient changes to the DSM-5 including (a) layering of
dimensional and categorical assessment philosophies;
(b) removal of multiaxial reporting; (c) introduction of dimensional
and cross-cutting assessment tools, (d) addition of new mental
disorders, and (e) major revisions to diagnostic criteria.
C. Applied Ethics A to Z: Understanding and
Applying Ethical Codes to Confidentiality, Counselor
Education, Supervision, Professional Responsibility
and the Entire 2014 Code of Ethics
Topic:
Ethics
Counselor Education & Supervision
Presenters: Michael Moyer
Charles Crews
Confidentiality, Professional Responsibility, Counseling
Relationship, Distance Counseling, Counselor Education and
many more. Attendees will not only come away with a better
understanding of the new code of ethics, but also their own values and how those values affect their interpretation of ethical
codes.
D. Essentials for Directors of Guidance: Maintaining
a Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and
Counseling Program in a House Bill 5 Environment
Topic:
Elementary School Counseling
Secondary School Counseling
Presenters: Brenda Jones
Ernest Cox
Deborah Healey
Victoria Bustos
Marty Rossi
Jessica Snyder
As a result of ever-changing and prevailing community and
societal issues, many children, adolescents, and their families
grapple with balancing success in their academic environment
with mandated educational initiatives and disruptive,
heartbreaking realities in their social environments. Directors of
Guidance, while providing leadership for school counselors and
the school district, have a constant focus on assisting school
counselors in tailoring their programs to meet a myriad of student
needs—educational, vocational, emotional, physical, and social.
This is done while Directors and school counselors are simultaneously being faced with conflict, ambiguity, and redefinition of
the counselors’ roles. The goal of this session is to assist Directors in their efforts to proactively build, implement, and advocate
for their district guidance program and clientele while assisting
the campus in addressing initiatives such as the Texas College
and Career Readiness Standards and improving academic
advisement and career exploration in the House Bill 5
environment. This learning institute will be delivered by a panel
of individuals who will share their experience and expertise on
the subject. Participants will be engaged in didactic and
experiential activities.
This program takes participants through the entire 2014 code of
ethics in a fun-filled, interactive format. Participants will work
through real world dilemmas on topics such as Supervision,

E. AchieveTexas College and Career Initiative: A
Framework for Developing Career Plans that Best
Fit Your Students
Topic:
Career Development & Employment Counseling
College Student Development & Counseling
Presenters: Karen Alexander
Cynthia Miller
HB 5 stresses the importance of students creating a personal
graduation plan that connects their high school experience to
college and career plans. In this full-day learning institute, you
will learn how the AchieveTexas framework and resources can
be the basis for your local comprehensive guidance plan that
supports students in making wise college and career decisions.
Examples of best practices of local implementation of the
framework will be shared throughout the day.
F. Todays Ethical Challenges - Avoiding the Traps of
Clinical Practice
Topic:
Ethics
Professional Issues
Presenter: Kim Hatley
Let us help you construct an ethical framework to create a
successful clinical counseling practice! The presenter will share
time tested as well as new information to help you set-up or
ramp-up your counseling practice, whether you are in private
practice, an agency or a group. Come learn about the misguided
and unintentional traps that helper professionals fall prey to, while
practicing a profession we love. We will provide clear solutions
and resources to shore up your professional foundation.

Ticketed Events - Post-Conference Workshops
Post-Conference Workshops will be held on Saturday, November
15, 2014 at the Conference Center from 8:30a-12:00p. Tickets
may be purchased in advance with your registration, or onsite.
All pre-purchased tickets will be included in your onsite
registration packet. Conference registration is not required to
attend a Post-Conference Workshop. 3.5 CEUs will be awarded.
G. Mental Floss - Stress Management for
Counselors
Topic:
Wellness Issues
Professional Issues
Presenter: Betty White
As conscientious counselors, we all want to embrace good
ethical practices. What we sometimes forget is that our ethical
codes, both from ASCA and ACA, specify that attending to and
managing our own mental health is an ethical REQUIREMENT.
This experiential workshop will help you to examine your life
balance, review and revise your attitudes and beliefs about your
practice, and gain skills to help you take care of yourself. You will
laugh, engage with other practitioners, and leave renewed!
J. HIPAA VS. FERPA - Piracy Practices for
Counselors in Educational Settings
Topic:
Ethics
Professional Issues
Presenter: Kim Hatley
Learn WHY you must now know State and Federal HIPAA Laws
and how they apply to your work setting as a counselor in an
educational environment. Hear the basics of HIPAA requirements
and how those laws apply with FERPA laws. Learn HOW to apply
policies and procedures to protect the privacy of personal
records in your setting. Understand the consequences of
ignoring the new laws. This training satisfies new laws mandating
HIPAA training, for professionals handling protected health
information.
H. The Intersection of Ethics and the Internet
Topic:
Ethics
Presenter: Gay McAlister
Development and use of new technologies is proceeding at a
pace that makes it difficult for counselors to fully understand
the ethical implications of their activities on these sites. The
ethical issues of internet use as well as potential dilemmas for
practitioners will be defined.
I. Counselor as Consultant
Topic:
Consultation & Collaboration
College Student Development & Counseling
Presenter: Enobong Inyang
Although consultation role in counseling is not new, few
counselors consult. In the era of reduction in services resources,
consultation is significant to counseling for remediation and
prevention. This workshop will examine the essentials for the
development of a counselor's identity as consultant
