What New Members Are Saying
FINANCIAL ADVISER
“In terms of what ‘s most valuable to me about Union Club membership,
it’s a tie between the convenience of the club’s location and the quality of the
members. The biggest benefit of membership is definitely the opportunities
it provides to meet and develop friendships with fellow members.
What has amazed me is how quickly the staff has come to know me by name.”

From the General Manager
Welcome to the Club
Meet New Members
Dear Members,
After 18 years at the
club, our “goodwill ambassador”
will say farewell when he provides his
last haircut on March 29. Dave Painter,
our club barber, is retiring, and we will
dearly miss him. We all know Dave for
his great sense of humor, quick wit, and
the heartfelt belly laughs he provokes
at our lunch table every day. No one
escapes his humor at work, and everyone gets a good dose of it if they walk
by him! Dave has been one of the club’s
assets and consistently made meeting
a Union Club staff person a positive
experience. We wish him many wonderful years and satisfying new ventures.
Please join me in congratulating Dave!
See you at the club,
Claudio Caviglia

Just Lunch Plus
Discover the Best Books From 2012
Wondering what should be on your nightstand or
e-reader? Book critic Karen Long will return to the club
at noon on Tuesday, March 26, to present her list of
the best books from the previous year. “This annual
luncheon is always sold out. Karen has many fans,” said
Katherine Friedell, chair of the Engaging Women’s
Committee, which sponsors the Just Lunch Plus series.
Long recently left her 34-year career at the Plain
Dealer to manage the 77-year-old Anisfield-Wolf Book
Awards as a consultant to the Cleveland Foundation.
The awards are given annually to honor books that
address racism and diversity. “I hope to coax more readers
to discover these prizes, read the recipients, and join the
conversations they engender,” Long wrote in her Plain
Dealer farewell column.
Plan to attend this popular luncheon.

More than 70 members and their guests
turned out for the Fitness Center’s recent
Grand Reopening Party. “Attendees enjoyed
a smoothie bar donated by Mary Ellen
Carney and Louise Dempsey, healthy hors
d’oeuvres, and cocktails, and the normal
Fitness Center feel was in the air – fun, laid
back, and low key,” said Fitness Center
Manager Christina Smelko.
The event heralded upgrades to the
center that include a streamlined layout,
new fitness equipment, high-definition TV
monitors, and wireless technologies. The
Health and Wellness Committee, headed
by Robert Bostwick, orchestrated the
improvements. “The real credit goes to
Christina and Sha’Da (Taylor) for keeping
us organized and updated throughout the
process,” he said.
“It’s exciting to see the club’s focus on
fitness,” said Carney. “The grand reopening
emphasized that we are listening and want
members to see the gem that is right here
inside the Union Club.”

Cover Story
Engaging Women
Continued from page 1
The Engaging Women’s Committee
meets on the second Thursday of each
month and hosts what it calls Just Lunch
on the last Tuesday. “Just Lunch is typically in the Tap Room and is open table.
Members and their guests are welcome
with no real need for reservations,” said
Friedell. From Just Lunch, the group
conceived the idea of hosting quarterly
luncheon presentations called Just
Lunch Plus. This month’s visit by Karen
Long – former Plain Dealer book editor, now a consultant to the Cleveland
Foundation-administered Anisfield-Wolf
Book Awards – is an example.
"Our mission is to provide
women opportunities
to socialize, learn,
and build relationships."
Katherine Friedell,
chair of the Engaging Women’s Committee
“Just Lunch Plus offers terrific programming and has a strong following,”
Friedell said. Highlights from the past
two years include an expert dialogue on
prospects for the Middle East, a fashion
and beauty series, a presentation by an
acupuncturist and herbal therapy expert,
and a health and wellness series.
“We are grateful to Linda Olejko
and Mary Lynn Laughlin, who were
instrumental in nurturing the idea for
the Engaging Women’s Committee,”
said Friedell. “Linda was the first committee chair, followed by Lisa Berger,
and my tenure began in 2010. As Louise
Dempsey often says, we are friends now
but never would have gotten to know
each other without the committee.”
What about those pajama parties?
Last month’s Girls’ Pajama Soiree,
organized by Sheila Niles, was the
committee’s second such get-together.
“We meet in the evening in the Reading
Room, where we have a fire and a great
time. We stay in the guest rooms, and in
the morning, the club provides a wonderful continental breakfast,” Friedell
explained. “It’s an opportunity to have
a lot of time to talk, instead of the sometimes rushed conversation at a meeting
or event.”

Arts and Culture
Celebrate Arts Prize Exhibition
Pay tribute to many of the city’s finest artists
at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, at a
reception celebrating the club’s yearlong
exhibition of works by winners of the
Cleveland Arts Prize. The show’s first
installment, hung in January, featured
works by winners from the 1960s and
1970s. April 17 marks the opening of the
second installment, dedicated to works
by winners from the 1980s and 1990s.
The Union Club Foundation and the Arts
and Culture Committee are the exhibition’s sponsors. Part of the evening’s
proceeds will benefit the foundation’s
mission to preserve and advance the
club’s and the region’s artistic legacies.
