Allison Rosati
Anchor, NBC 5 News
Allison Rosati is co-anchor of NBC 5 News’ award-winning
news team at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. Illinois Broadcasters Association
named Rosati and Warner Saunders best anchor team in 2004.
Rosati joined the NBC 5 family as an anchor and reporter in
August 1990.
Viewers first got to know Rosati on “First Thing in the Morning.”
Five years later she enjoyed anchoring the early evening news.
And in May 1997 Rosati was promoted to co-anchor of NBC 5’s
10 p.m. newscast. In addition, Rosati also co-anchors the station’s weekday 6 p.m.
newscast, does a weekly segment called Wednesday’s Child and special reports.
Originally from Pine City, Minn., Rosati started her career in Rochester, Minn. in
1985. KTTC-TV hired her as a general assignment reporter and in less than a year,
promoted Rosati to producer and co-anchor of the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.
Committed to community service, Rosati volunteers her time for many Chicagoarea organizations. Whether it’s the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Infant
Welfare Society, the Ronald McDonald House, or the March of Dimes, Rosati enjoys
giving back whenever possible. Over the years she has also helped the Big Brothers/
Big Sisters organization, from sitting on the board of directors to helping with events
to raise awareness.
Rosati has received numerous awards for her work including a National Emmy for
the “Survive Alive” Station Project and Fire Prevention special. In 2004 she received
the Humanitarian Of The Year award from the Italian American Police Association,
who also named her Woman Of The Year in 2001. In December of 2002, Allison Rosati
received the Department of Health and Human Services Adoption Excellence
Award from HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. She also received an Excellence
in Communications Award from the Justinian Society of Chicago, and the David
Award for “Achievement in Broadcasting” and in May of 2001, she received the
prestigious Dante Award from the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans -an annual award to journalists who are “not timid friends to truth.” In 2000, she
was honored with a Chicago Emmy Award for her role as host in “NBC 5 Presents:
Millennium 2000.”
Honorary Chair
Ashley Hooks
Miss Illinois USA 2012
Ashley Hooks was crowned Miss Illinois USA 2012 on November
20, 2011. A native of the Chicago south suburbs, Ashley has
a demonstrated passion for public service and intends to
use her reign to help increase attention to youth education,
social justice and other important issues. In addition to being
Miss Illinois USA, Ashley currently works full-time as a Special
Projects Manager for the State of Illinois’ Department of
Central Management Services (CMS). A 2008 graduate of
the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), she recently
completed her graduate school entrance exams and plans to attend graduate
school for public policy and business administration and eventually pursue a career
in public service. Ashley has used the pageant as an opportunity to reach others
with positive messages about public service and achieving life goals.
Ashley thoroughly enjoyed representing Illinois in the nationally televised Miss
USA 2012 pageant in Las Vegas, NV in June. As she concludes her reign, Ashley
continues to support various causes including her priority causes, education and
breast and ovarian cancer research. Ashley’s mother was diagnosed with ovarian
cancer in October 2011, just a month before the 2012 Miss Illinois USA pageant. Her
mother’s health has since prevailed; and in April she was given a positive cancerfree diagnosis.
Above all, through her reign as Miss Illinois USA 2012, Ashley has hoped to inspire
others --particularly young people -- and to raise awareness of issues she sees as
vital to the future of young women in Illinois.
Though Rosati grew up in Minnesota, she was born in Dover, Del., while her father
was stationed in the Air Force.
In 1985, Rosati graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a double major
in speech and communications and received cum laude honors. Gustavus has
honored Rosati with its First Decade Award and its Distinguished Alumni award for
her achievements in journalism.
Rosati and her husband have four children.
Meet Ashley Hooks!
The beautiful Miss Illinois USA 2012 will be helping out
today, at the Gifts That Give table.

St. Jude Special Guest
Maggie Cupit
21 years old • Mississippi • Ewing sarcoma
An ambitious college student with a packed
schedule, Maggie had only a couple of weeks
off between the end of her spring semester and
the beginning of her summer study program at
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in 2010.
Getting picked for the program at St. Jude had
been an honor. Only a select few students from
her college were awarded slots; as a chemistry
major planning to pursue a medical degree, Maggie was thrilled to have
been chosen.
Maggie had a few things to cross off her to-do list while she was home. For
one thing, she needed an MRI to determine the cause of her nagging leg
pain – it seemed like no big deal. She underwent the MRI, and later drove
with a friend to find out the results. What she learned in the doctor’s office
that day was devastating: Maggie had cancer. The next time she entered St.
Jude, it would be as a patient and not as a student. She was terrified.
“I started weeping,” said Maggie. “I was very dramatic and out of control. I
kind of had a panic attack in there.”
Maggie was found to be suffering from Ewing sarcoma. Ewing sarcoma family
tumors are small, round cell tumors that arise either in bone or soft tissues.
Maggie’s tumor was located in her right tibia bone and the surrounding soft
tissue. At St. Jude, Maggie began receiving chemotherapy. She then had
surgery to remove the tumor-ravaged bone. Her tibia was replaced with a
metal rod, and once she recovered, she began physical therapy to help her
gain strength and mobility. Her chemotherapy continued for several months
after that.

To keep herself busy while she went through treatment, Maggie wrote and
took guitar lessons. She also focused on learning how to cook and learning
Japanese from a St. Jude fellow. Still, she says, there were times when she
had to work hard to overcome the physical effects of chemotherapy. When
she felt especially bad, she practiced breathing exercises and imagined
herself being larger than the molecules that make up the drugs.
Maggie is grateful for her care team at St. Jude. And as strange as it may
sound, she has happy memories of the hospital. “St. Jude is not a place of
mourning,” Maggie says. “It’s a happy, positive place full of people all going
through the same thing. And every doctor, every nurse, every person behind
a desk is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.” Maggie has finished
treatment, and is continuing her college studies.

St. Jude Quick Facts
• St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® opened in 1962 and was founded by
the late entertainer Danny Thomas. Its mission is to find cures for children with
cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world.
• No family ever pays St. Jude for anything.
• In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most
common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate
for this once deadly disease is 94 percent, thanks to research and treatment
protocols developed at St. Jude.
• The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.8 million, which is primarily covered
by public contributions.
• During the past five years, 81 cents of every dollar received has supported
the research and treatment at St. Jude.
• St. Jude has treated
children from all 50 states
and from around the world.
• On average, 7,800
active patients visit the
hospital each year, most of
whom are treated on an
outpatient basis.
• St. Jude maintains 78
inpatient beds and treats
upwards of 260 patients
each day.
• St. Jude is the first and
only pediatric cancer
center to be designated as
a Comprehensive Cancer
Center by the National
Cancer Institute.
• In 2011 and 2012, St.
Jude Children’s Research
Hospital was named one
of the country’s “100 Best
Companies to Work For,” by
FORTUNE magazine.
• St. Jude is the first
institution established for the
sole purpose of conducting
20
basic and clinical research and treatment into catastrophic childhood
diseases, mainly cancer.
• St. Jude was the first pediatric cancer research institution to place doctors,
scientists and patients “all under one roof,” creating a worldwide model
for “bench-to-bedside” research and treatment of childhood cancers and
other life-threatening diseases.
• St. Jude has developed protocols that have helped push overall survival
rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital
opened in 1962 to 80 percent today. The current St. Jude survival rates
for selected childhood cancers now include:
Current St. Jude
Diagnosis

94%
Hodgkins disease (cancer of the lymph system)
95%
Medulloblastoma (a type of brain tumor)
85%
Wilms tumor (kidney tumor)

• St. Jude has 2.5 million square feet of research, clinical and
administrative space dedicated to finding cures and saving children.
• St. Jude revolutionized pediatric cancer treatment around the world
with its groundbreaking use of a combination of chemotherapy,
radiation and surgery to treat childhood cancers.
• St. Jude patients are referred by a physician, and generally have a
disease currently under study and are eligible to be enrolled in a current
research protocol or clinical research trials.
• In addition to childhood cancers, St. Jude researchers and doctors are
treating children with genetic immune defects and pediatric AIDS, and
are using new drugs and therapies to fight infections.
• The hospital’s International Outreach Program transfers the progress
achieved in the treatment of childhood cancer in developed countries
to those with limited resources. As of August 2012, St. Jude has 20
partner sites in 14 countries, and more than 32,000 registered users from
185 countries have accessed Cure4Kids.org, an Internet-based distance
learning initiative. In addition, St. Jude trains thousands of medical
professionals around the world through consultations, faculty visits to
St. Jude and Cure4Kids.org.
• St. Jude was the first institution to produce a cure for sickle cell disease
with a bone marrow transplant and has one of the largest pediatric
sickle cell disease programs in the country.
• St. Jude is a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Studies
on the Ecology of Influenza Viruses in Animals and Birds.
