Battle of
Bulltown
Reenactment
set for
October 11
The U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers and the
Stonewall Jackson Re-enactment Unit will take you
back in time to 1863 as the
Union and Confederate
troops clash at a reenactment of the Battle of
Bulltown October 11, at 2:00
p.m. at Burnsville Lake.
The reenactment occurs every two years as
visitors get to relive an
important part of Braxton
County History.
The event will include
living history demonstrations October 10 and 11,
including soldier programs,
guided tours of original
structures built in the
1800s, wool spinning, apple
butter making and live
music. Admission and
parking is free. The enactment will take place at the
Bulltown Campground-Historical area.
Take Interstate-79,
exit 67 (Flatwoods), turn
left at the traffic light.
Travel approximately 11
miles, then turn left onto
Millstone Road. Travel approximately 1 mile, then
turn left to Bulltown Campground-Historic Area.

Burnsville Lake receives
$1.9 million in Stimulus money
As reported in last
week’s Citizens’ News,
the US Army Corps of Engineers received $1.3 million for improvement to
the Sutton Lake Recreational
areas.
That
project was not the only

the northern portion of the
county. The bulk of the
money will be utilized in

Bulltown and Riffle Run
Campgrounds. Electrical
and sewer installation
and upgrade are currently
underway at over 250 of
the facilities’ camp sites.
Water and sewer serveral
will be added to camp sites
on C,D,E, and F loops at
Bulltown. In addition
many of the locations will
see improved electrical
service as the capacity
will be increased from 30
to 50 amp hookups.
Like Sutton, most of

November 30. The immediate areas around the
playgrounds will be closed
beginning October 5

date. The remainder of
the facilities will remain
open during this process.
A portion of the
money will be utilized to

“We are very pleased
with the work force we
have hired and the improvements that will be
made to our facility,” says
Pingley. “We are also working on other projects that
may be funded with additional ARRA monies that
may become available.”

search and rescue system
utilizing radio transmitters and electronic tracking equipment to locate
Alzheimer patients, autistic individuals, or those
with down syndrome or
traumatic brain injuries
who may become lost. “Before Project Lifesaver, the
only option available to locate these individuals was
to conduct an extensive,
costly and potential lengthy
search that often involved
hundreds of personnel from
local law enforcement
agencies, fire departments
and rescue squads. These
searches could take up to
several days or even
weeks,” Patalano told
County officials. “Project
Lifesaver relies on proven
tracking technology, combined with specially
trained search and rescue
teams, to return adults and
children who have wandered to their loved ones,”
she added.
The representative
said a grant from John
Reese of Morgantown provides $50,000 per year to
purchase equipment to establish the program. She
said the program was active in nine West Virginia
counties. The only cost to
the county would be purchasing the tracking
transmitter, which cost
approximately $300 each
for start up and/or distribution to those who
couldn’t afford to privately
purchase them. She also
said the only ongoing expense is regular replacement of batteries and
bracelets which is usually
handled by a monthly
maintenance fee of $10.

talked to community organizations and businesses
and felt the financial support would be present in
Braxton County to support
the program. The presenters told the Commission of

amounts of time and re-
sources had been reduced
to mere hours where the
system was in use.
Following the presentation, Mike Chapman
made a motion that the
Commission contribute
$2,000 in startup costs
from the Coal Severance
Fund to implement Project

raw sewage discharge

Kevin Lilly, a Department of Environmental
Protection inspector, came
before the board to report
that Chris Garrett, Braxton
County sanitarian, had received a complaint concerning the discharge of
raw sewage into Elk River.
As a DEP inspector, Lilly
was called to assess the
situation in the Sutton
Moose Lodge area. A dis-
covery was made that the
discharge was coming from
an undetermined source
through a section of 8-10
inch terra cotta pipe and is
discoloring the river water
making the water quality
questionable. A discussion
of the best possible resolution to the problem ensued.
Fred Hypes of Dunn Engineering gave the opinion
that dye testing be done in
that area to determine the
source of the raw sewage
and add that area to the
Phase II sewer project. Impact of the addition would
be minimal to the overall
cost of the project and the
additional cost could be
paid out of contingency
funds.
Hypes also reported
that smoke testing had
been done in the Sutton
and Gassaway areas in regard to the CSO Project,
which was a portion of the
sewer agenda. The smoke
testing report unofficially
revealed that storm drains
and some culverts were
still tied into the sanitary
system in both municipal
areas. More access points
are needed in the town of
Sutton and a new sanitary
system in Gassaway is
needed as well as replacement of storm sewers.
Fred Hypes and Attorney H. Wyatt Hanna led the
discussion of financing scenarios for the Phase II sewer
project. Applications for the
project funds were not submitted in time for stimulus
funds. It was reported that
the DEP was expecting more
money in 2010 and there
may be reallocations of several surrounding states’
money if it is not used. Since

members, hospital staff
and guests. The festivities were held on September

Gassaway Fire House.
Entertainment was provided by Jenny Crites
while those in attendance enjoyed a delicious
meal prepared by Jeanne
Jackson.
Following lunch,
Auxiliary

Beatrice Crites, elaborated on the monetary
support provided in recent years to Braxton
County Memorial Hospital. Special recognitions
included the Volunteer
of the Year award presented to Ruth Skidmore
and acknowledgment of
volunteer hours.

of the event, District

Simmons, expressed her
gratitude for the invitation to attend this annual event. Layton
Heckert delivered an
eloquent closing benediction.

PATH meeting…
Long time readers of this column have often
heard me complain about deadlines. As I have
said before, deadlines often present challenges
and sometimes get in the way of doing what one
would prefer to do. That was the case last Monday
when the West Virginia Pubic Service Commission held two public hearings pertaining to the
PATH project at Flatwoods. Readers probably recall
that PATH is a high voltage transmission line that
will cross our state and county to carry power from
the John Amos Power Plant in the Kanawha Valley
to the heavily populated areas of the East. The local
gatherings are part of a statewide process.
The project has created a huge amount of
discussion and controversy. I wanted to attend
one of the meetings held at the Days Hotel to
learn more about the project. Unfortunately both
meetings that were held locally occurred on a
Monday, which is our publication day. Mondays for
me start early and end late. There was no time to
leave the office. I did discuss the meeting with
some who attended. I also read accounts of the
meeting in the Charleston Newspapers.
The attendance probably didn’t truly reflect
the interest from our area. The timing was not
good for common people to attend and express
their opinions. From those I spoke with, as well
as the accounts I read, there did not seem to be
much, if any support for the project. Most of the
objections centered on the question of whether
the project was needed or not and the cost to rate
payers.
Unless someone comes up with a new approach that I have not yet heard, I agree. I have
not heard a good case that clearly identifies a
need. The biggest thing that I don’t like is the
fact that our State will take the blunt end of this
project on the chin and what do we get for it? Our
electric bills will go up and we won’t even be
utilizing the power.
I oppose this approach by all utilities that
attempt to use it. I don’t think the existing rate
payers should pay for expansion that doesn’t
benefit them… in most cases the stock holders
are the benefactors. There certainly are those
who make that argument about this project.
There has to be an end to it… the public can just
stand so much. It is obvious that there are alternatives. I think we should investigate them
further before giving AEP and its partners our
blank check.
The only good thing that I have heard pertains to the sale of coal. Yes, our state relies on
the jobs provided by the coal industry. One of the
only items I read last week pertained to the
largest power rate increase in history. What was
their reason? The utility has been paying higher
prices for coal. I don’t want to see anyone unemployed. However, I don’t want to see anyone forced
to choose between paying their electric bill and
buying the medicine and/or food that is necessary to keep them alive. I believe PATH is a bad
idea. If you disagree, let us know. Please remember that it is a long standing policy of this newspaper that we must carry the signature of those
who wish to present their ideas in these pages.
While I invite and encourage you to write us, I
would simply add that it will be a waste of time to
send me an anonymous letter. I seldom read
them, and we never publish them.

Dear Editor,
On September 28 I
attended the Public
Service Commission
hearing in Flatwoods
regarding the P.A.T.H.
It was disheartening to
see how few people
were there. This
project will affect all
West Virginians in a
negative way. It is
another example of
outsiders “walking all
over” West Virginia
with no benefit to our
citizens. From listening to comments at the
meeting, we will see
higher electric bills
since someone has to
pay for this project. We
will pay even though
this project is for other
states’ electricity. The
health and environmental issues will be
with us for years.
Besides the operation
of the power lines, the
upkeep using powerful
herbicides will cause
health concerns for all
West Virginians,
especially our children
and grandchildren. We
owe them a better
legacy than this
P.A.T.H. More hearings
are scheduled: October 2, 12:30 and 6:30

Charleston, WV; October 13, 12:30 and 6:30
PM, Canaan Valley

I would urge people

information or to express their opinion on
the P.A.T.H. These

peoples’ opportunity to

Little Birch Days...

I wish to congratulate all those hard
working people who
have made “Little
Birch Days” possible.
Each year my sister
Carol and I travel from
Akron, Ohio to enjoy
the festivities there.
That is where we
spent our childhood.
Each year, we see
some friends from our
past and it is wonderful.
Meanwhile, a well
planned program of
entertainment is going
on, such as: The dog
show, wet frozen tee
shirt contest, antique
car show, clogging,
BCHS Marching Band,
fashion show, Hillbilly
Stompers, singers and
much more.
This year we had
the joyful surprise and
excitement of being
entertained by Rocky
Elvis and his helpmate
Kay. We loved his Elvis
songs, the dancing and
scarves he gave to
some of us lucky ladies.
We are having a great
time dancing and the
children danced nonstop. I understand
Rocky Elvis will return
to LBD’s in 2010. We
are looking forward to
it!

My general health has been
exceptional, especially for my age.
Having my family doctor in Charleston for years, I had thought any
surgery I would have would be in
Charleston, but circumstances and
confidence in our local surgeon
changed my mind. After symptoms of
gall bladder problems, I consulted our
local hospital and surgeon Dr. Ronald
Pearson.
On September 23 rd, I was the
first on the list for surgery after all
the pre-lab and paper work. The
operation went very well and the
nursing care was excellent. My
follow up with the surgeon will be
Monday the 5 th of October. I was
expecting pain and all the discom-

Todd Dingess presented the financial summary for July 1, 2009 thru
August 31, 2009. Since revenue was down for water
operations

Weyerhaeuser cutting production, John Gibson moved
that the Public Service Commission rate case as related to Weyerhaeuser be
reopened and Eldred Drake
seconded the action. Sewer
operations finances are considerably better than water
operations finances, where
expenditures are still exceeding income.
Under new business
Rodney Pritt discussed the
work session concerning
employee insurance. A representative from the Braxton County Commission attended the work session and
explained their policy on insurance. On a motion by
John Gibson and seconded
by Eldred Drake, all future
full time employees, effective October 1, 2009, will pay
10% of their health insurance cost and retirement
health insurance costs with
Flatwoods-Canoe Run paying the remaining 90%.
This plan is similar to the
Braxton
County
Commission’s procedure.
The discussion of longterm employee wage scales
was tabled to a work session,
where an in depth look at
wages will be done.
Steve Sanders presented an unresolved right
of way issue concerning the
Clyde Putnam property.
John Gibson made a motion
authorizing the relocation of
a gas line and up to $1000
for right of way acquisition.
Eldred Drake seconded the
motion.
The meeting was ad-
journed on a motion by Mr.
Gibson and seconded by Mr.
Drake.

Dr. Richard N. “Rick”
Butler,
age
57,
of
Normantown, went home
to be with the Lord at 5:06
p.m. on Tuesday September 22, 2009 while doing
what he loved, working on
the family farm.
Rick was born April 3,
1952, in Braxton County, to
the late William Jennings
and Lucille Smith Butler.
He was a 1970 graduate of
Gilmer County High
School, a 1974 graduate of
Glenville State College,
and later received both
Masters and Doctoral degrees from West Virginia
University.
In 2007, Rick retired
Braxton County, WV
after 33 years of public
school experience. During
his career, he served the
students of West Virginia
as a teacher at Gassaway
Middle
School,
Parkersburg High School,
Hamilton Junior High
School, and Franklin Junior High School. He also
served as assistant principal at Franklin Junior
High School, principal of
Gilmer County High
School, and as a faculty
member in the Education
Department at Glenville
State College. Rick concluded his life-long career
as superintendent of
schools in both Gilmer and
Ritchie County.
Knowing Rick meant
knowing a Christian who
lived what he believed. He
was an active member of
the Sand Fork Baptist
Church, where he served
as not only the worship
leader, a Sunday School
teacher, and trustee, but
also as the church liaison
for building projects.
Rick was a loving husband and father whose
quick wit, sense of humor,
and respect for others
made his priorities clear:
his faith, his wife and children, education, and the
family farm to which he
returned in 1991 to raise
his children.

build several buildings and
shelters for the club’s
campground. Lee continued serving his community and country as a member of the American Legion

Sutton High School in
1943. Out of high school,
she worked as a Spot
Welder in the Shipyards in
Baltimore, MD. She then
worked for the two Dr.
Eakles in Sutton, WV. She
moved to Grafton in 1947
with her husband. After
his passing, she worked
and retired in 1987 from
Valley Community Mental
Health as a Community
Worker in Taylor County.
She was a member of the
Church of the Good Shepherd, B & O Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary,
and volunteered at the
Mothers Day Quilt Auction
where she was fondly referred to as “The Bag Lady.”
She enjoyed any opportunity to spend time with her
family sharing love, laughter, and good times. Many
of those wonderful hours
were spent on her back
porch. She will be deeply
missed by all who had the
pleasure to know and love
her.

cookout were to be held today at the home of Pastor

had a wonderful time. If

Joseph’s Hospital this past
week. She was discharged
on Saturday morning and
insisted that her family

a delightful, feisty ninetyfour-year-old wonder! We
all love her and marvel at
her continued positive influence. When told a while
back that the doctors at
Ruby would not operate on
her heart because of her
age, she told them they
would too! She would not
take, “NO,” for an answer.
She survived beautifully!
Attitude has got to be a big
percentage of what it takes
to survive life’s troubles.
Martha Kerns wrote
that she “wanted to let you
know that I enjoy reading
your very informational
column . . . Also, I am a
former employee of Weston
Hospital and it is great to
see some of the names of
employees that I knew
when I worked there. For
instance, Libby Ferrell and
others. I worked in the
Accounts Payable Dept.
from May 1971 and retired
November 1, 1994. It was
originally known as Bookkeeping Dept. and later
updated to Accounts Payable. It is amazing that the
hospital was so large that
there were a lot of people
who worked there that I
might have known but had
no idea they worked there
because I never saw them.
Some I saw due to processing travel expenses etc. or
passed them in the hallway. I worked in four different offices in the old
building due to moving
from one to the other. I was
so glad that I got to work
from March to November in
the new Sharpe Hospital.
It was like going from a
model T to a Cadillac.

from the old cookbook that
I have told you about.
English
Coffee
Braids-Mrs BF Loyd, Sutton,
WV
1 ¼ cups milk, scalded
¼ cup shortening
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cake fresh or 1
package granular yeast
2 lightly beaten eggs
4 ½ cups flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1 ½ cups seedless raisin
Combine milk, shortening, sugar and salt; cool
to lukewarm. Soften yeast
in this mixture. Add eggs.
Add flour sifted with cinnamon and raisins, mix to
soft dough. Knead lightly
on floured surface until
smooth and elastic. Place
in greased bowl; grease top
of dough. Cover and let
rise until doubled…about 2
hours. Punch down, let
rise again until doubled.
Divide into 2 equal parts;
roll each part into rectangle ½ inch thick, cut
rectangle lengthwise into
3 strips. Braid 3 strips in
loaf form. Place on greased
baking sheet; cover and let
rise until doubled in bulk.
Bake in moderately hot
oven (375) for 30 minutes.
Brush with icing-(1 ½ T
milk to 1 C confectioners’
sugar) and sprinkle lightly
with nut meats. Makes
two 4x12 inch braids.

Cinnamon-Apple Pork
Chops Recipe
Ingredients
· 4 boneless pork loin
chops (4 ounces each)
· 2 tablespoons reduced-fat butter, divided
· 3 tablespoons brown
sugar
· 1 teaspoon ground
cinnamon
· 1/2
teaspoon
ground nutmeg
· 1/4 teaspoon salt
· 4 medium tart
apples, thinly sliced
· 2
tablespoons
chopped pecans
Directions
· In a large skillet
over medium heat, cook
pork chops in 1 tablespoon
butter for 4-5 minutes on
each side or until a meat
thermometer reads 160°.
Meanwhile, in a small
bowl, combine the brown
sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg
and salt.
· Remove chops and
keep warm. Add the
apples, pecans, brown
sugar mixture and remaining butter to the
pan; cook and stir until
apples are tender. Serve
with chops. Yield: 4 servings.

Braxton County Memorial Hospital will also be
providing additional
blood screenings at a
very low cost.
Approximately 200
flu vaccines were administered last year at
no charge to the health
fair participant due to
the generosity of local
sponsors and donations.
Over 300 individuals
took advantage of the
many vendors available
that were on-hand to offer information on the
services they provide.

met for their monthly
meeting at 10 a.m.
Meeting was called
to order by President
Sandy Samples, followed
by the Pledge to the flag
and the Christian flag.
Also, in attendance were

fill our lives but God Himself! Missy read from
Ecclesiastes 1:1-14.

minutes from our last
meeting. Gloria gave the
treasurer’s report. We
brought tissues and
hand sanitizer to give to
the school. We will deliver them soon. We also
made up a Welcome Basket for our new neighbor
Tharon Todd. Sandy will

We discussed our up
coming Spaghetti Dinner which will be on September 26, 2009 at 4:30

TRUTH OR TRADITION?
“God will accept any and all worship as long as we are
honest and sincere”
Truth or Tradition?
The Right to Worship. In a letter to the editor of a
county paper some time ago, a woman made the comment that we have a God-given right to worship as we
please. While it is true that our constitution grants us
that right, does God? Has God ever, since the beginning of time, given man the right to worship as he
pleases?
Cain. There is no reason to doubt Cain’s honesty
and sincerity when God accepted Abel’s offering, and
rejected Cain’s. His sin was in offering the fruit of the
ground rather than a blood sacrifice. Genesis 4:1-8.
Nadab and Abihu. Neither have we any reason to
question the honesty and sincerity of these two sons of
Aaron, when they offered “strange fire” unto the Lord.
Fire came down from God and destroyed them, apparently because they got fire to light the incense from
some place other than the altar of burnt offering.
Leviticus 10:1-2; 16:12-13.
The Prophets Of Baal. The prophet Elijah once challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to prove the
true God. Each was to build an altar, prepare the wood
and sacrifice, and then call on their god/God to light
the sacrifice. The prophets of Baal were to go first. All
morning they jumped and leaped about their altar calling on Baal to hear them. In the afternoon they became even more fervent as they cut themselves with
knives and lancets till the blood gushed out upon them.
No question of their honesty and sincerity, but Baal
never answered. 1 Kings 18. Do you think the God of
heaven accepted the worship of those prophets?
Jesus Taught: “Not everyone that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but
he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we
not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast
out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful
works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew
you: depart from me.” Matthew 7:21-23.
Have we any reason to question their honesty and
sincerity?

held their annual Achievement Day at Hope Baptist
Church in Frametown, WV
on Friday, September 18th at
10:00 a.m. This special
event gives the members of
Braxton County a day to reflect and give themselves a
pat on the back for all of the
community service they
provide each year focusing
on education for the community, family heritage and
value, and support to other
community works, such as
supporting local firehouse
activities, cancer aware-

Education Committee, reported on the Breast Cancer
Awareness campaign that
will held on October 5, 2009
at all local post offices. Mary
Ellen Sergent reported on
the Member and Marketing
committee stating that all
volunteer hours for the
clubs in Braxton County
were turned in to the extension office in Morgantown.

The speaker for the
day, Pat Nestor, representing Jackson’s Mill, he is an
advisor to the Marketing
and Member State Committee, and is a Specialist in
Volunteer Development,
updated all members on the
happenings and improvements at Jackson’s Mill. His
talk, “Planting for the Future”, “Are You
Looking For Me” was
both informative and interesting. Mr. Nestor explained
how volunteers like ourselves can impact a community and make a difference and create a positive
community force.
An installation ceremony was held for the Secretary, Janis Young, and
Treasurer, Lucy Stalnaker,
with guest Ann Nestor, our
Area Representative performing the pledges. She
also read a poem, “The History of Aprons” and talked
about the new financial best
practice program that is now
in all clubs in the state. A
wonderful lunch was enjoyed by all clubs, and every
club had an opportunity to
talk about their achievements in 2008-09. Fun and
fellowship was enjoyed by
all. Anyone can become a
member of the CEOS by contacting the extension office

record to 3-0. Commenting on the important victory, coach John Park
said, “We really needed
this win. It puts us in
control of where we play
for our LKC North/South
matchups.”
Braxton and Wirt remain the only unbeatens
in league play and that
sets the stage for a showdown on October 15 as
Wirt comes to Braxton.
“If things stay the same,
this [the October 15
match-up] should be a
great game. This match
could determine if we
play for an LKC championship,” Coach Park explained. “The girls would
love to see the gym
packed for this match,”
he added.
In the October 1
match against Roane,
the Eagles won the first
game 25-20 and then, in
two very tough games,
took the second 25-23
and the third 27-25.
The Lady Eagles
junior varsity squad continued their dominance
in the south by defeating
the Lady Raiders JV.
Coach Park described
the action, “Roane came
out and took us out of
our game plan in the first
set, but we regrouped,
got back to doing things
our way, and took the
next two sets.”
Scores of the October 1 junior varsity
match against Roane
saw Braxton go down 2125 in the first game, but
the Eagles came back to
win the next two 25-21
and 25-14.
Last Saturday, the
Lady Eagles junior varsity showed their determination in a tournament at Nicholas. Coach
Park said that his squad
was “pooled with three
AAA schools,” but added
that he “ {enjoys] the
challenges of playing bigger schools.” The Lady
Eagles junior varsity
proved equal to the challenge issued them as
they “hit the win column”
by
beating
Morgantown in two sets.
The Eagles’ first victory came with a score of
25-20, and they won the
match by taking the sec-
ond game 25-22.
The next match did
not go so well for Braxton
as Spring Valley handed
the Lady Eagles a hardfought two-set loss.
Coach Park explained
the loss, “We got rattled
and never got back to
playing our game.
Our serves were off,
our passes were not to
the setter, and we squandered opportunities that
we normally would capitalize on. But we challenged [Spring Valley]
none the less.” The Lady
Eagles lost those two
games 22-25 and 21-25.
Following the loss to
Spring Valley, Braxton
faced a win-or-go-home
situation, and the team
responded. They defeated host Nicholas in
two straight sets to advance to semi-final play.
“We knew what had to be
done if we wanted to continue playing, and we did
the little things that got
the job done,” Coach
Park noted.
Braxton won that
match in straight sets
with convincing scores
of 25-18 and 25-12.
In semi-final play,
Braxton met Pool A winner Greenbrier West.
The Braxton coach commented that he felt “[the
Lady
Eagles]
were
slightly intimidated by
the size of their players
heading into this match.
They had four girls
that looked down on our
tallest players.” However, according to their
coach, Braxton gave GW
“all they could handle as
[the match] went to
three straight sets” to
determine the winner.
“We played hard and
made some tremendous
hustle plays that kept us
in the match. I’m very
proud of the girls. They
matured greatly with
playing in this tournament.”
Coach Park went on
to comment, “A few of
these girls are adjusting
to losing for the first
time since they were
sixth-graders. We are
trying to overcome that
fear of making a mistake and then not getting past it to play the
next point.”
After losing 21-25 in
the first game against
Greenbrier West the
Lady Eagles came back to
take the second game
26-24. GW won the third
match 15-9.

for two more as AAA Nicholas outscored Braxton 28-0
last Friday night to hand
the Eagles, now 3-2, their
second consecutive loss.
Braxton coach Matt
Rollyson attributed the loss
to “turnovers and field position.” He explained, “We
had three turnovers, two of
them unforced, and our
special teams allowed
Nicholas excellent field position three different
times.”
One of the Grizzlies
scores followed a Braxton
fumble deep in their own
territory. Nicholas took
possession and quickly
scored. At times, according
to
Coach
Rollyson,
Braxton’s “special teams
were in good position to
punt but twice, the punts
didn’t total thirty yards,
and Nicholas gained possession at midfield.” He
concluded by saying, “Our
problems basically were
self-inflicted. We moved
the ball pretty well, and
Nicholas really didn’t do
anything spectacular.
They just took advantage of
our mistakes.”
Statistically, the Grizzlies passed for 173 yards
and carried the ball 39
times for 126 yards and a
total offense of 299 yards.
Their leading ground
gainer was Mayes, who
carried the ball 13 times
for 50 yards. Hogan, the
leading receiver, caught 5
passes for 72 yards and two
touchdowns.
Jake
Ferguson also had five receptions for 70 yards.
Braxton’s offense totalled 166 yards, with 43
yards coming in 17 carries
and 123 yards on Jordan
Lacy’s 15 of 24 completed
passes. Braxton’s leading
receiver, Tyler Cottrill,
picked up 47 yards on two
receptions.
The Eagles held
Nicholas to one first-half
touchdown, scored on a
four-yard run by J.T.
McClung, but Mayes went
to work in the second half
and took his team to their
fourth win of the season.
With 8:54 left in the
third quarter, Mayes
scored from eight yards
out. Jordan Hogan, who
was 4 for 4 in extra-point
attempts Friday night,
added the PAT, and the
Grizzlies were up 14-0.
Mayes tossed a two-yard
pass to Hogan with 3:33
mark left in the third for
six more points, and Hogan
followed with the PAT kick.
Another touchdown
pass from Mayes to Hogan
came in the fourth quarter.
Hogan’s kick made the final score 28-0.

Notice is hereby given that the
Board of Trustees of the West Virginia Annual Conference of the
United Methodist Church will, on
or after October 7, 2009 upon the
payment of the sum of TwentyFive
Thousand
Dollars
($25,000.00) in cash, QUITCLAIM, SELL, and CONVEY to
TRUSTEES
OF
STRANGE
CREEK CHURCH, all of their
right, title and interest in and to a
certain lot or parcel of land, together with the improvements
thereon and the appurtenances
thereunto belonging, situate and
lying in the County of Braxton,
Birch District, State of West Virginia described as follows, to-wit:
BEGINNING on a gum tree on
the West Bank of Strange Creek;
thence N 11 E 5 poles and 6 links
to a stake: N 77 E 2 poles to a
stake; S 36 E 6 poles to a stake
on the bank of Strange Creek;
thence with the meanderings of
said creek to the beginning.
And being the same property
conveyed to Wm. H. Ashley,
James Blain McLaughlin and
Jacob D. Davis, as Trustees of
the Strange Creek Methodist
Episcopal Church, South, of
Strange Creek, West Virginia,
from James Ballenger and Margaret S. Ballenger, his wife, by
Deed dated the 23 rd day of July,
1912 and of record in the Office
of the Clerk of the County Commission of Braxton County, West
Virginia in Deed Book 90, at Page
131.
Said Church having been declared discontinued by authority
of the West Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist
Church on June 13, 2009.
