Native Plants
Over the past two or three decades there has been a steady and increasing drumbeat surrounding native
plants. What once was a fringe market has become a grassroots driven movement, sparked by consumers
embracing green memes and gardeners seeking hardy, trouble-free plants with the vigor to withstand our
increasingly chaotic environment.
Defining native plants is far more difficult than growing them. Some listings include native cultivars, others
refer to native as growing in the contiguous 48 states, while others won’t use the term if the plant can’t be
found within 50 miles of the planting site.
on tags
We at David Rose Perennials think you should be the judge. While all of the above will receive an
and bench cards, a further designator in the description (on labeling, bench cards, and our website) allows you
to make your own definitions and help your customer make well-informed choices. They are as follows:
Native to The Northeast: This is a species that can be found in the wilds of our sales area, defined by the
states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. These are the
“true” natives.
Native to The Lower 48: This is a plant that is native to the contiguous United States, but not our sales
area, as defined above. This describes the majority of natives listed in most other catalogues.
Native Cultivar: This is a plant not found in the wild, but a selection or cultivar deriving at least half of its
genetics from a wild plant; the term nativar is becoming more frequently used to describe these plants.
We have also included another icon
to help identify plants particularly beneficial to pollinator insects like
bees. These insects are crucial to the continuance of crop culture both at home and in agriculture, and the
more we can do to help offset habitat loss in the wilds, the better the chance that we can continue to enjoy
every third mouthful of food that these pollinators make possible for us. We expect you will hear a lot more
about pollinators this year; it’s a win/win/win for you, your customer, and the planet.
We hope this helps you to define your own selections, and inform and educate your customers. We hope you
continue to think of David Rose Perennials as both a source of good information, and of great plants to help
you increase your sales. To both of those ends we have added a PK sheet/poster opposite this page to help
educate customers and to steer them towards native plants as a beneficial garden addition. We hope that this
is a tool you are compelled to use towards these ends; please feel free to reproduce this and use as you see
fit.
