Vietnam Traveling Wall
By special arrangement, during
the first week of August, the Vietnam
Memorial Traveling Wall stopped in
our city for five days before moving on
to other locations all over the United
States.
A replica of the original Memorial
located on the National Mall in
Washington, D. C., the Traveling Wall
is a very powerful and compelling reminder of the heavy and high price
this nation paid during the Vietnam
conflict, in pursuit of spreading and
maintaining the ideals this country
stands for.
Of the 58,256 names listed on the
Wall, ten were officially listed as being
from Provo, Utah at the time of their
death in military conflict. They are
listed below by name, rank and date
individual died in conflict:

It was incredibly sobering to slowly
walk along that Wall on a summer evening thinking about the lives, the families, the other loved ones, the dreams,
the dedication, the talents, the hopes,
and the horrors of war that accompanied each individual name listed.
Along the bottom of the Wall some
had placed notes and other items in
special observance of those honored.
Some were from other veterans, perhaps even buddies who were present
at the time when one of those listed
actually perished. Another
Vietnam Casualties from Provo
note could have been from an
adult woman who grew up as
Kenneth Hyrum Brown, PFC - 6/25/67
a child without knowing her
Michael George Brown, 1 LT-3/7/69
father because he had been a
Aaron Floyd Ferguson, PFC - 10/7/68
casualty of war.
Larry DuWayne Johnson, SP4 - 7/22/70
It was interesting to step
Steve Ralph Luke, BM2 - 12/6/68
back from the wall and to obGary Glen Pool, PFC - 6/11/68
serve. Many individuals quiLynn Kesler Powell, CAPT - 8/21/67
etly and quickly walked along
Niel Burns Riggs, PFC - 9/29/67
the wall and then promptly

departed the park. Others

Mayor’s Message: Continued from Page 1
slowly walked, paused, then walked some more. A special few seemed to approach the wall more deliberately and slowly and after some limited searching, paused to linger, occasionally touching specific names.
As I stood there, I realized that many of these individuals were those who
had also served, but who had returned bearing all of the scars and memories
of that difficult conflict. I couldn’t help but wonder what it must have been
like to have served, to leave military service ravaged by the horrors of war,
and to return home at the time when their service was mostly unappreciated
by the American people.
I continued to watch the ebb and flow of people and noticed a gathering at
the Wall where a man who was obviously a Vietnam era veteran was talking.
I moved in to listen and was impressed by his eloquence, his passion, and his
respect for those who had served in Vietnam.
As he ended his remarks, he expressed passionate frustration that in his
church people often prayed for this person and that person, but he said they
seldom pray for the President of the United States who is making the decisions that will lead to lives being committed in conflict and/or for the men
and women of the Armed Forces whose very lives are on the line, every hour
of every day, as they defend the American way of life. I thought his message
and admonition were powerful and appropriate.
This is a community that greatly values Faith, Family, and Freedom. We
genuinely appreciate and value those who sacrifice on our behalf. Today, we
say “Thank You” to all Veterans, especially to our Vietnam Veterans. Your
service is truly appreciated and you deserve our highest praise and honor. It
is important that we always remember what you have done for us.
We express sincere appreciation to Gerald Hubbard and his committee who
worked to bring this great memorial to our City.
