~ Letter from the Superintendent ~
Greetings Spartan Community,
Can you believe that in less than three months the school year will be over?
The Lake Forest Family has been working diligently throughout this year to
celebrate our students, increase academic success and partner with our community. Wow! Time flies when we are having FUN!
Our Strategic Planning Committee consists of nearly 90 staff members, parents, community leaders and business stakeholders. It is fantastic to have so
many stakeholders planning for the success of our students. On February 22,
2018 and March 22, 2016 our Strategic Planning Committee met to finalize
objectives and action steps for our three goals. The goals are a) Increase Academic Success for Every Student; b) Partnerships with Families, Communities
and Businesses; and c) School Facilities and Learning Environments. On April
14, 2016 each work group will make a presentation to the Board of Education
as well as take public comment. On April 28, 2016 the completed Lake Forest
Strategic Plan will be presented for the Board of Education to vote on its adoption for the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 school years.
On February 19, 2016, Lake Forest South and North both were recognized as Recognition Schools by the State of Delaware. The ceremony was
held at the Dover Air Force Base Middle School. As a result of their student achievement each school received an $8,000 grant to assist with continuing academic success. We are proud of both schools. More information
and photographs can be found in each school’s section of this publication.
On February 20, 2016, Lake Forest School District hosted a Black History
Celebration with performances given from each of our schools as well as our
Delaware Early Childhood Center. Our very own Lake Forest graduate and
employee, Mr. Fred Johnson received our Obsidian Spartan Award for his dedication to going above and beyond the call of duty to help students succeed. A
short video of the celebration is posted at
www.doverpost.com/news/20160221/video-black-history-month-celebrationat-lake-forest-high-school. A special thanks to Mr. David Paulk of the Dover
Post for the creation of the video.
We would like to formally thank the Lake Forest Community Education
Foundation (LFCEF) and the Greenwood, Harrington, Felton Rotary (Rotary)
for their support. LFCEF has provided funding for several of schools to purchase instructional resources that will enhance learning in the classroom. The
Rotary has sponsored the Interact Club as they provide services and resources
to several agencies in the community, sponsored the Winter Festival to assist
the homeless and provided dictionaries for our third grades at Lake Forest East,
North and South. We are fortunate to have both of these organizations in our
community.
As we prepare to complete this school year, I want to challenge you to continue to show your Spartan Pride by engaging in the education of our students
and participating in our events. It is the support of the families, businesses and
the community stakeholders that contributes to a positive environment for student learning to take
place. Thank you for
being a part of the
Superintendent, Lake Forest School District
Spartan Family!

CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION & ASSESSMENT NEWS:
Curriculum APP for LFSD is Live
The Curriculum Department released its Curriculum APP in mid-January for all of the Lake Forest
Community. Parents will benefit from the APP with the instant updates from our schools with events and
news in addition to the staff directory.
The APP Quick Links will give instant access to all school websites, learning partners such as Wonders,
Envisions, Achieve 3000, and at-home practice/search links.
Students will be able to link to their Kahn Academy accounts for SAT practice.
To download the FREE APP just visit your APP store and Search: LFSD Curriculum and install to your smart phone, tablet,
kindle or other device.
SATs Replace SBAC at DE High Schools
The State recently announced that it has adopted the SATs in Grade 11 as its standardized
testing format in replace of the Smarter Balanced, SBAC test. Students in Grades 3-8 will
still take the SBAC; however, all grade 11 high school students will now take the SAT test.
Lake Forest High School will be creating Kahn Academy Accounts for all high school
students to get a personalized learning map that will help them prepare for the SATs. In addition, all 11th grade math and ELA teachers have been trained on all of the changes with
the “new” SAT.
Achieve 3000
Achieve 3000 is a program that we have for students at our middle school and high school to use for non-fiction reading to
increase their lexile levels.
Based on decades of scientific research, Achieve3000®'s proven and patented method
of online differentiated instruction engages all learners at their individual reading levels
and constantly challenges them to improve their literacy skills.
Achieve’s solutions steadily increase students' ability to read, comprehend, apply and
communicate information derived from complex text.
The student receives differentiated, grade-appropriate, nonfiction passages, matched to
his individual Lexile level.
Recently, a third-party independent study shows Achieve3000, helped students make significant gains in vocabulary, reading
comprehension, and total reading skills.
Parents can at our Secondary Schools can take advantage of Achieve3000 at HOME with their children via the District Curriculum APP under Quick Links and their child’s Achieve Account.
Lake Forest Holds
Annual Spelling Bee
On February 10th, the Lake Forest
School District held its annual Spelling
Bee “Night of Grade Level Champions”
for Central Elementary and WT Chipman Middle School.
Students competed in front of parents,
familiy members, teachers and administrators with words such as: moxie,
frigate, cartouche, trellis, and tropical.
Judy “Ja He” Johnson was the winner
for Central Elementary, and Celine Jeun
was the winner the WT Chipman Middle. Both students then went on to compete at the state level. The Delaware
State Spelling Bee was held at St. Marks
High School, Wilmington, on Saturday,
March 5.
BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS:
As spring approaches Lake Forest School District is preparing for the 2nd year of our 3-year Major Capital Improvement
Program, with renovations at W.T. Chipman Middle School, East Elementary School and the High School. At the time of this
article, the bidding for all three schools has been completed and awarded to prospective successful bidders.
East Elementary will have the main office relocated and reconfigured to improve traffic flow and safety to students and staff.
There will also be exterior improvements to the connecting corridor on the west hallway as well as security upgrades and exterior lighting improvements.
W.T. Chipman will be very busy this summer with the renovation of two science rooms and flooring in specific areas of the
school. The security system will be updated as well to include additional cameras on the interior and exterior of the building.
The connector corridor from the main building to the gymnasium will be enclosed to give student safe passage to and from the
gymnasium, and site improvements will be directed toward the drainage issues on the athletic fields.
The High School and South Elementary will see improvements as well this summer. At the High School, The Natatorium
will receive a much needed new HVAC system as well as a new pool filtration system. South Elementary will have security
upgrades much like the other schools, including additional interior and exterior cameras. The bidding for the classroom addition and site renovations at Central Elementary should be completed by the end of June with construction expected to begin in
September.
There will be installation of a new fence around the playground at North Elementary. This fence was a multi-party endeavor
with Lake Forest North Elementary, North PTO, Buildings and Grounds and charitable donations from members of the community. The Lake Forest School District would like to send a special thank you to the following businesses and families for
their donations:
• Lake Forest North PTO
• G&S Electric, LLC

Spring 2016
LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL: 1:1 TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE IN FULL FORCE!
Lake Forest High School (LFHS) embarked upon the 1:1 Technology Initiative as a pilot school during the
14 – 15 School Year. In December 2015, the initiative was fully launched at the high school when over 900
Dell laptops were distributed to students along with accessories. All students at LFHS have access to an
electronic device regardless of their economic situation.
For students, full implementation consists of lessons and activities becoming more tailored or personalized
based upon their individual skills and abilities. Some approaches being utilized to support the blended learning environment are:
• Schoology platform
• Khan Academy SAT review for students (based on their SAT pretest)
• Increase access to Achieve 3000 reading program
• Unlimited exposure to Math activities for all students through Odyssey and Khan Academy (RTI)
• Students are equipped to do extensive research and engage in powerful presentations
• Gain access to Microsoft Office tools 24/7
As a blended learning environment, teachers at LFHS have chosen to enhance their instructional practices
through the incorporation of various models (flipped, flex, station rotation, individual rotation, lab, etc.).
Teachers are able to access Open Educational Resources at no cost. Lessons are also current and teachers have
the capability to provide quicker feedback to students on assignments, quizzes, etc. The following are excerpts
from teachers about the 1:1 Technology Initiative (blended learning environment):
Mrs. Christine Gallo, Social Studies Teacher shares,
“One-to-one technology is utilized in a multitude of ways to enhance student learning and communication. Students are able to access presentations from class lectures and discussions and other resources,
such as primary source documents, for reference to complete assignments or study for assessments. In addition, assignments are posted with upcoming due dates, and students are able to submit completed work
online.”
Mr. Luke Pierson, Mathematics Teacher conveys,
“I can move at a quicker pace because intervention materials are provided to struggling students using
the Schoology platform. Learning Odyssey and Khan Academy are used as formative assessments for the
students to display their learning, which makes for easy evaluation of the students’ comprehension. Students answer the essential questions after each concept to display their understanding through verbalization. Discussion boards are provided where they can ask classmates questions about certain problems or
post hints that they are finding helpful in their problem solving. When a certain level of understanding is
achieved, the students break away from the computer to participate in investigative real-world problems to
display their understanding.”
~ Career Technical Education Programs Offered at LF High School ~
ECE Pathway:
The Early Childhood Education pathway prepares students for occupations in teaching, early childhood education, and other related fields. Each course is sequential and provides
students with a foundation that will help them be successful in the workplace or in the pursuit further education and training. Students will also have the opportunity to become a
member of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America which will allow them to build leadership and competitive skills that are necessary in the workplace and community.
In order to successfully complete the pathway students are required to complete three courses in sequential order. Those courses include Human Development, Child Development, and Exploring Early Childhood. Upon completion of the pathway, students may elect to complete an internship with a local business or school in order to obtain additional
experience and training.
Student Quotes:
“Human Development helps me connect to society and family. I better understand my relationships, how to communicate, and how to handle conflict when it arises.” – Elle
Harden, Grade 10
“The Early Childhood Education pathway is a good fit for us because we now understand what it takes to have a healthy relationship, be part of a strong family, and how to be a
supportive parent.” – Shairee Best, Grade 11 & Xavier Owens, Grade 10.
“I decided to take the Exploring Early Childhood pathway because my future career involves working with children and this class has taught me the techniques and skills required to deal with kids in different situations.” – Rebecca Triola, Grade 12.

(Continued from page 3)
Technology Pathway:
The technology pathways at Lake Forest High School include a Process of Design and
Engineering course, and a Drafting and Design Course. The PODE courses are centered
around the design process that allows students to brainstorm solutions to a proposed problem, work with peers in small groups, and build and test their solutions. Students work
with materials such as wood, Styrofoam, PVC piping and the like.
In the Drafting and Design pathway, students learn how to use manual drafting tools,
as well as three AutoDesk computer drafting programs (AutoCAD, Revit and Inventor).
Students are taught to understand 2D and 3D shapes, manufacturing processes and basic
architectural concepts.
Our Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) is Technology Student Association (TSA), which has earned several first place finishes at our State Competition,
Top 10 finishes at National Competition, a Chapter Excellence Award in 2015, and a
Chapter Advisor of the Year Award in 2015.
Family and Consumer Sciences: Foods and Nutrition:
The Foods and Nutrition pathway at Lake Forest High School provides students with
the skills and knowledge to prepare high-quality food items to meet a variety of needs,
while adhering to current industry food and worker safety
standards. Students also learn some basic business concepts, such as marketing, calculating costs, and interpreting documents such as invoices and profit-and-loss reports.
We are a part of ProStart, an intensive, industry-based program designed by the National Restaurant Association. Students in the Foods and Nutrition pathway also have the
opportunity to engage with the community and showcase
their FACS-related skills by participating in FCCLA or
competing in the ProStart Invitational Competition. In
March, a group of four students will compete against teams
from all over Delaware at the ProStart Invitational. Also in
March, six students will participate in the Delaware FCCLA
Spring Leadership Conference. They will compete in a variety of events that demonstrate their knowledge of Family
and Consumer Sciences principles, with the hopes of qualifying to travel to the National Leadership Conference in
July.
Agriscience:
The Lake Forest Agriscience program boasts over 200 students spread across three
pathways; Agricultural Mechanics, Animal Science, and Environmental Science. In the
classes, students gain experience in activities such as welding, greenhouse production,
livestock production, wildlife management, construction, forestry, veterinary science,
and small engine repair. The campus features two large working greenhouses, a livestock facility, a working grain farm, a wetland and woodland, and a large mechanics
shop. In addition to our classroom instruction, students get the opportunity to participate
in the FFA chapter where they can practice their skills through Career Development
Events and gain leadership by attending state and national events or making the commitment of becoming an FFA officer. Over the past year the Lake Forest Agriscience program and FFA have been awarded with the Delaware Superstars in Education Award,
sent numerous students to state and regional competitions, and been recognized as one
of the best FFA programs in the country with a two-star rating from the National FFA Organization.
Business Education:
The Business Education pathways at Lake Forest High School continue to grow and
expand the scope of offerings to our students. Within Business, Finance, and Marketing,
we offer three different pathways, including Accounting, Administrative Services, and
Business and Corporate Management. While tied into the business world, each pathway
provides different learning opportunities and varied experiences.
This year marks the fourth year that the Business and Corporate Management III
(BCM3) class has participated in the Diamond Challenge,
which is a regional competition organized by the University of Delaware and Delaware Technical and Community
College. Teams of high school students design a new business, prepare a written plan, and present their idea to a
panel of judges, with the hope of earning up to $10,000 in
scholarship or SEED money. Every year, LFHS has had a
preliminary winner in the competition, and last year, one
team was named “Honorable Mention” at the final round,
winning $1,000 in the process. Previous winning ideas include a school coffee shop, drive-in movie theater, belt
bands to secure the loose end of your belt, an electric carcharging station, and a clothing re-design company that
converts donated clothing into newly styled, modern wear.
In addition to the Diamond Challenge success, the Business Professionals of America (BPA) student organization
has seen unprecedented growth, involvement, and achievement! Last year, 14 students went to the State Leadership Conference (SLC) and 11 qualified for the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Anaheim, California. This year,
25 students are attending SLC at Dover Downs with the goal of advancing to the national
conference in Boston, Massachusetts. Along with competing at the state and national levels, BPA has adopted the highway in front of the high school and cleans it three times per
year, along with participating in more than ten other school and community service projects throughout the year.
Come and be part of “Today’s students… tomorrow’s business professionals.”
Hail to the Chefs!
The Lake Forest School District ProStart Team,
which consists of four LFHS students (Janaie
Thomas, Collin Tunnell, Cassandra Broadhurst and
Zietara Fields) in the Family and Consumer Science
program, placed 4th place in their first competition
held on Tuesday, March 1st.
The ProStart team has been working with Harrington Raceway and Casino Executive Director of Food
and Beverage D.J. Silicato and Bonz Executive Chef
Jason Ordway to prepare for this competition. In preparation for the statewide
Pro-Start competition, the four students cooked up a gourmet, three-course meal
for Lake Forest School District officials, family members and others including
Representative Jack Peterman and Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce President Judy Diogo.

Safety First at Chipman
Safety. While the primary task of schools is to ensure
students receive rich content and are taught the necessary skills to learn and be able to apply that content to
real-world situations, administrators and staff members
also need to ensure the building and classrooms are safe
learning environments. The Chipman staff continues to
place a high priority on safety and security each and
School Resource Officer Stubbs
every day.
As a result of our security focus, we have integrated several items into our safety program:
a dedicated safety team, a comprehensive safety plan, a building-wide security camera system,
controlled entry points, a School Resource Officer, and a safety patrol.
One of the items the safety team discussed during a recent meeting was the need for a few additional cameras to increase the overall coverage throughout our building and upgraded software
to more effectively retrieve and review digital footage when necessary.
However, between the planning and implementation phases of our camera system, we continue
to have the trained eyes of our Safety Patrol. They will be there to monitor student movement
and behavior in the morning before homeroom and during our class changes. Officer Stubbs of
the Harrington Police Department, our School Resource Officer, oversees our Safety Patrol as
well as our overall security program.
Safety and security will continue to be a priority at Chipman as we practice vigilance each day
to help make Chipman the safest place that it can be.

THE GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE 2016
Under the direction of Michele Davis, Central Elementary held a kickoff assembly for
The Great Kindness Challenge 2016. Students from Lake Forest High School spoke to our
students about the importance of being kind. Dr. Wynder recognized Zabrina Gibbs’ class
for winning the door decorating contest. Lake Forest’s mascot, Sparty, made an appearance for our 4th and 5th graders.
The Assembly kicked off a week where students and staff were challenged to devote the
week to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. Students were given a checklist
of suggestions and received a small token for their efforts if they completed the list. Central Elementary was buzzing with kindness in the form of smiles, thank you notes, good
deeds and more. Dr. Wynder called to let us know the kindness reached her office when
she received an email thanking her for all she does for our District.
LOOK OUT CHIPMAN, HERE THEY COME!
Counselors from WT Chipman will be visiting Central Elementary to meet with our 5th
graders. Students will hear about all the wonderful changes ahead for them. They’ll hear about
the classes offered at Chipman, the choices they have to make and the importance of doing well
now and in the future.
Central looks forward to hosting some of the Chipman staff and we look forward to Move up
Day at the end of May. Students will visit Chipman and get a first-hand look at the building, the
teachers, administration and the whole new world that’s about to open up to them. WT Chipman…get ready for another great group of young people!

Once their analytical needs
were met, they exercised their
more creative side with some
kindergarten through third
grade writing challenges.
For our second and third
graders, we had our computer
lab open for a question, answer, and experience with the
Smarter Balance Assessment.
Parents were given the opportunity to ask questions and see
sample practice problems.
In the gymnasium, the fun
continued with our huge
Scholastic Book Fair and
Smart Board games. The
event was attended by over
335 participants. A huge thank
you to all of the staff, students, and families that made this night possible.
As always, our community’s support and participation in our students’ education is what makes our
school great.
Coming May 10th
Celebrating Art & Music
Tuesday, May 10th will be date of the Sixth Annual Night of
the Arts for North Elementary. This event showcases the creative talents of our students and gives parents and family members a glimpse at the technology and techniques that are used in
music and visual arts classrooms.
The evening will begin with a performance by the North Glee
Club. This will be the club’s second major public performance and
will feature a selection of the songs they have learned this year.
Over six hundred student artworks will also be on display. Every student at North has been
keeping a portfolio of the art they have created. In preparation for this show, the students will critique
their portfolios and select their best
work/works for display. These artworks will
highlight the many exciting topics the students have covered this year.
Finally, this event will also showcase
our Spring Book Fair. This book sale is always popular because it is a “buy one, get
one free” event. Mrs. Ferguson also has a selection of used books which can be purchased
with PBS “Star Bucks”. This is an excellent
opportunity to stock up for summer reading.
We hope to see you there!

DECC’S
College Fair!
News Worth Sharing!
DECC Parents as Teachers (PAT) has been
selected by PAT National Center to participate
in the Blue Ribbon Process. This will be a
year long accreditation process to begin with
the July 1, 2016 program year. Both the Kent
& Sussex PAT affiliates were chosen to participate in the process.
As a part of our professional
development, the afternoon
session was devoted providing
information to staff. The college
fair was designed to provide
information for continuing
education, certification and
degree programs.
The staff had an opportunity to speak with representatives from University of Delaware, Wilmington
College, Delaware Technical College, Wesley College and the T.E.A.C. H. Program. It is DECC’s aim
to have Early Childhood Educators who are not only highly qualified but abreast of current trends and
best practices in Early Childhood Education. Special thanks to ECAP who coordinated the event.
Block Party
Senator Carper Visits
Seaford ECAP
ECAP’s Seaford Site was selected by “ Read
Aloud” to receive a visit from US Senator Tom
Carper.
The Senator read “Last Stop on Market
Street” by Ezra Jack Keats to a very attentive
group of students in Ms. Tiffany Carter’s Class.
The children interacted during the story with
motions and chanting repeated phrases along
with the Senator.
At the conclusion of the story the children
applauded and told Senator Carper it was the
best story they had ever heard!
Dover High ROTC Cadets
Welcome ECAP Sweethearts
Children and families from our ECAP Dover sites were
welcomed by Dover High School’s ROTC Cadets as they
arrived for their Sweetheart Dance. The event was attended by 49 parents, ECAP staff and Dover High School
Staff.
The children enjoyed an evening filled with music, stations, and yummy treats! Dover High School is the home
of our ECAP Little Senators.
A Block Party was sponsored by Parents As Teachers
and New Directions Early Head Start for all families.
There were many families and Dads in attendance,
engaging in creative building and experimentation activities with a catapult and more!
