GOSPEL FEST On The Crown Point
Court House Lawn, June 22nd
Sunday, at 6 p.m.
The Lake Court House Foundation has taken
over the responsibility of managing the "Annual
Gospel Fest" from the Crossroads Regional Chamber of
Commerce. This year it will take place on the East Stairs
of the Court House as it has in many past years. Reverend
John Star will be introducing the musicians and the
amplification will be provided by Chuck Mudd of Seismic
Sound. Church and school choirs and several soloists will
be singing gospel music. Local singer Beth Moreno will
again sing her wonderful rendition of 'Deep River"
accompanied by David Vacari. The Harmony Hand Bells
will perform 2 gospel selections, 'When the Saints Go
Marchin In' and ‘Closer Walk With Thee'. Begins at 6pm
following the 2013 Food and Arts Festival on the square.
As in the past bring your neighbors, your
family and your lawn chairs and come and enjoy
an hour or so of wonderful music. In case of rain
we will gather inside the Court House.
For further information or to help with the event call

Community Support Needed for Chance to Win
$100,000 Grand Prize and Save More Lives
Beginning June 1, Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA)
will be a contestant in the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray
$100K Challenge. HSCA is
competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant
funding, including a grand prize of $100,000. This is a
nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at
getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. The
challenge takes place throughout the months of June through August and the
HSCA has set a goal of placing 675 animals in forever homes during that time.
For the challenge, HSCA chose the theme of “Rescue Me.” Throughout the
summer at the shelter, HSCA will offer Save Me Saturdays with reduced adoption fees for a special group, including police officers, firefighters, EMTS, doctors, nurses and more. Five times during the summer, the shelter will host Empty
the Shelter weekends on a Saturday and Sunday with no-cost adoption fees for
qualifying applicants. For more information about HSCA's
participation in the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge and how you
can volunteer, sponsor, or adopt, visit hscalumet.org/aspca.asp.

Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent,

We encourage our readers to
Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local
A marketplace of small businesses is the best way to ensure
innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of
small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national
sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local
customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

To Blog or not to Blog?
More people than ever are taking to the
web to share their two cents about
parenting, gardening, hobbies, and life in
general. These successful projects,
experiences, travels, recipes, and crafts
are posted in blogs, and then shared,
pinned, liked, and bookmarked by
people around the world. Some
bloggers have hundreds or even
thousands of visits per day, and an
established blogger with a solid
following can earn a profit from the

advertisements that dance across their
web space or from the items they
promote in their posts. After reading blogs
posted by friends and strangers, I began
itching to create my own site to share my
experiences and create impressive "before
and after" photos showcasing my work.
There is only one problem: I have a less
than stellar track record when it comes to
hobbies, and it seems my blog would only
feature my shortcomings in bread-baking,
woodworking, and scrap booking, to
name a few. After
further reflection,
I found comfort in
knowing every great
blog started with a
blank website and a
single post. Similarly,
each talented artist,
writer, and crafter
extraordinaire was
faced with challenges
and failures along the
way. Joshua Fields

with less stuff. Joshua and Ryan share
basic tips on why to blog, including:
you’ll become a better writer, you’ll
become a better thinker, you’ll inspire
others, and it’s free. They also give three
reasons not to blog: money, notoriety, and
raffic. If done for the right reasons, and
done well (by choosing a specific theme,
staying committed, and keeping it honest
and simple), Joshua says we will truly
lead a more intentional life. The
blogosphere gives us the opportunity to
share, interact, and learn from each other,
and provides the knowledge base and
encouragement to sharpen our skills—no
matter how novice they are to begin with.
While I contemplate building a birdhouse,
making jewelry, or writing poetry, with a
little luck and most importantly, some
dedication, maybe my next hobby will be
worth blogging about. Are you a blogger
or feel inspired to start one?
