With over 350 years of maritime
history, it is no surprise that today
New Bedford is one of the most
important commercial ports on the
East Coast. From its whaling days to
its current position as the nation’s
number one fishing port in terms
of value of catch, to its future as a
major intermodal shipping center,
the Port of New Bedford has been
and will always be a working port.
Today, the busy Port of New
Bedford is home to over 200
maritime businesses, a commercial
fleet of 500 fishing vessels, two interisland ferry services, an active cargo
shipping industry, a cruising industry,
bulk and break-bulk cargo facilities,
and numerous shipyards and vessel
repair facilities.
In recent years, the marine
technology and science cluster in
New Bedford has seen significant
growth. The Port of New Bedford is
a deep water port with a depth of

30 feet and sits at the mouth of the
Acushnet River, which flows south
into Buzzards Bay and the Atlantic
Ocean and lies nine nautical miles
south of the Cape Cod Canal
shipping channel.
The Port of New Bedford is also a
Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ #28),
which provides duty-free
manufacturing opportunities for
importers and exporters.
The harbor features a hurricane
barrier that stretches across the
water from the south end of New
Bedford to the Town of Fairhaven.
The barrier’s 150-foot opening closes
during hurricane conditions and
coastal storms making the Harbor
one of the safest hubs on the eastern
seaboard. The Port is supported
by the city’s outstanding, multiethnic work force and international
distribution services, which include
an adjacent airport as well as rail and
interstate highway connections.

Ferry services are available in the
port, including passenger and
cargo service to Cuttyhunk Island
and passenger service to Martha’s
Vineyard. Launch, water taxi, and
charter boat services also operate
in the port.
Like many modern working ports,
New Bedford/Fairhaven Harbor
balances maritime interests and local
economic needs with environmental
concerns. Several economic and
environmental designations, such
as the Foreign Trade Zone and No
Discharge Area, currently apply to
the port. Long-term projects, such
as the Superfund cleanup and
restoration of federal navigation
channels, are taking place in the
port. These projects and designations
will improve the harbor’s
environmental health and enhance
its economic growth.

The HDC is the governing body for New Bedford’s harbor and city-owned waterfront properties.
It is chaired by the Mayor of New Bedford with seven other members. The role of the HDC is to
support the Port of New Bedford by continually upgrading port resources; preserving its spot as
the #1 U.S. fishing port; and expanding the New Bedford economy.
The HDC oversees all the commercial and recreational vessel activity within New Bedford city
limits, incorporating the city’s entire coastline and harbor. The HDC manages all municipal
property on the waterfront, including multiple wharves and a 198-slip recreational marina at
Pope’s Island. The Commission also assigns moorings within city waters and issues permits for
harbor events and use of city-owned waterfront facilities.
