President’s message
What a wonderful year for the
Shaw Guild! We finished 2009 with
a record 412 members, who volunteered over 8000 hours hosting,
gardening, and supporting Shaw’s
outreach program by leading backstage tours & assisting at Shaw
Members’ Days.
Our 2009 fund raising efforts produced very satisfying results, enabling us to donate $25,000 to the
Shaw Guild Endowment Fund,
$5,000 to the Neil Munro Endowment Fund and $500 to the Special
Company Appeal.
At our Annual meeting in November
we said good-bye to five retiring
members of the Guild Executive.
I would like to say thank you to
Peter Gill for his outstanding
fund raising work, Justin Venhuizen
for modernizing our membership
data base, Len Kooperman for keeping us informed and amused with his
interesting newsletters, Jim White
for a superb job of leading the Hosting Captains & scheduling over 490
shows, and last but not least, Jack
Harmer for taking on the Vice President’s job for a year and providing
great assistance in that capacity. We
appreciate all your time and effort.
I would also like to welcome the new
members of the Executive Committee. (p. 4) They have already begun
the orientation process; we look forward to their leadership and fresh
perspectives.
As the new season gets underway,
we invite Guild members, new and
old, to continue our tradition of promoting and supporting the Shaw Festival.
As always, we welcome your feedback. I hope to see you all at our
scheduled activities.

“CAVORT”..ING! 2010 and 2012
The Shaw Guild is hosting CAVORT (Conference
About Volunteers of Regional Theatres) here in
Niagara-on-the-Lake, in April, 2012.
This conference, held every second year, brings
together volunteers from major regional theatres
across North America.

CONFERENCE IN
They meet to network, exchange
ideas and find out what is new and
exciting in the world of theatre, plus
hear of innovative ways to support
and expand the impact of their local
theatres.
MINNEAPOLIS
This year, the 2010 CAVORT conference takes place at the prestigious Guthrie Theater
…..
in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from May 13 to 16.
As a participant at the conference, you will have
the opportunity to meet people from all over North
America, who, like you, make theatre a major part
of their lives, see brilliant staging ( the play M.
Butterfly ) and visit a fascinating city, Minneapolis,
one of the unrecognized jewels of this continent.
If you are interested in joining us, contact Charmian Entine ( [email protected] 905-4687792 ) , or visit www.guthrietheater.org or
www.cavortinc.com
The Guthrie Theater has Canadian
connections, through its first Artistic director, Tyrone Guthrie, who
founded the Stratford Shakespeare
Festival. As The Guthrie entered
the millennium, it built a new complex, called by Times Magazine “a
21st century dream factory”. The
new building includes three stages:
a classic thrust stage for the
grand-scale classics of the centuries, a proscenium stage for the
more intimate classics of this century, and a studio theater for developing the classics of tomorrow.
